Zen 3 Launch Availability

When will it be possible to buy a Zen 3 cpu without using a bot or paying Scalper rates?

I’m thinking I may go with a 3900x or 3950x and a z570 board and if I can ever actually get a 5950, replace the 1700x in my second PC with the 3000 series. Of course, something tells me we may see a new release before I can get a 5950. Is the next range of AMD CPUs going to work on AM4 or is 5000 series it?
I think regardless of the rumor above, AMD has been saying 5000 was the last stop for X570/AM4. I've also read multiple places, rumor or not, that 6000 would be on DDR5.

Yeah, that might change the calculus for me a little. I seriously doubt that I will be able to get a 5950X before the new line comes out and I certainly don't expect to get a GPU upgrade until Q4 or even Q1 next year unless I get lucky. After that, it may be impossible to get a 5950x. So as it stands, I should either go with the 5800x and be happy until my next upgrade or maybe see if I can figure out which component in my PC is having issues and just swap that out and wait longer. Oddly enough, my PC has been rock solid today. I think I'll kill the overclock and see if that buys me even more time.

This whole situation sucks hard.

Yeah it's a terrible time to build. I got lucky with the GPU and CPU. If by lucky you mean allowed to pay way over MSRP for stupid combos on Newegg lol.

Where I wasn't so lucky is our fridge went out a few weeks ago. It's been a nightmare even trying to get a new refrigerator. Finally got one Monday after living out of coolers for a month.

I thought the Newegg combos were at MSRP. It stinks that they no longer let you send the unwanted combo stuff back. I was able to on the 3080 a few months back.

Well, the stuff on the shuffles is above MSRP but not quite scalper prices. I try to remember to enter every day but forget on some days. At any rate, I haven’t won yet and likely won’t because I suspect Newegg is receiving less and less stock while more and more people enter.

It might just be time for me to throw my hands in the air and pay a scalper price for a 5950x - at least they’re not double or triple MSRP (yet).

I do wish they would just let folks with long standing account just place a flippin' back order but I think they are more interested all the traffic and how to make money off it.
That is how I go the 5950x from B&H but after the preorders they stopped.

Well, there should be a flood of 5900x's any day now. I said to hell with it and ordered a 5800x because I was sick of waiting and playing the "maybe tomorrow I'll get lucky" game. Now that I'll have the CPU I don't want it should release the floodgates on the CPU I did want.

Exactly - same goes with the 3080 and 3090. I do not have time to camp on Best Buy's site or stare at the Discord notification bots every day. This whole thing is totally absurd. And then we hear rumors of a 3080 Ti - why bother nVidia? You can't even satisfy demand for your cards now, let alone a new model.

If I would've known how this would go down with respect to CPUs, I would never have canceled my 5900X preorder from B&H because I'd be getting it any day now.

Was a drop at best buy today, 3k series and amd cpu drops, possibly more. But I had an all day meeting at work, and missed it :(

The Best Buy drop was a little screwy. I think they were testing out new "anti-bot" changes or something. I know there were some people that made scripts to help add things to cart etc, so maybe they were trying to mitigate that. Regardless, the site and carting just wasn't working like it normally does for me.

That aside, I'm almost sure by now that BB releases on a regional basis. The sheer number of cards that showed in stock but unavailable anywhere near me was ridiculous. I'm in the St Louis area, so not like i'm 100 miles into the countryside.

The Best Buy drop was a little screwy.
That is putting it mildly. It went from ship-to-store only to not available to be shipped to your selected store, to shipping only, then unavailable in your area all while the 5950x was in my cart. Then it went out of stock. Terrible, frustrating experience.

Just reporting that today, after fighting since the holiday using everything EXCEPT botting myself (ie I had notifications from closed communities etc), I finally was able to acquire a 5950X! It was on BestBuy's drop and I paid retail $799 USD + tax (about $840 ). Its taking a little long to get here according to BB, arriving by the 12th of April, but none the lest its coming!

It was lucky to get ahold of it, but I finally have a CPU to go with my Asus Dark Hero board that a family member managed to acquire for me at the holidays (it was the only one at microcenter that week and wasn't even put on the shelf, yet!). Watching things for the past several months it has been hard to find any AMD 5000 series CPUs, but a few weeks back the 5800 and 5600 became frequently in stock. While the 5600 would often sell out yet be quickly restocked, the 5800 would sit with availability for quite some time. Unfortunately the 59xx chips are VERY rare and remain so in 2021. Extremely limited quantities of the 5900 and even more restricted 5950X for sale and almost instant sell outs due to botting. Microcenter near me told me that they didn't get ANY 59xx chips and hadn't for well over a month ; last time they did in early Feb it was literally 2 5900 and 1 5950 - even if you camped out! I've seen occasional 59xx chips come into stock once per week and sell immediately - often before even the button is present on the page thanks to the broken ass Digital River storefront - on AMD.com ; every so many Newegg Shuffles offer either a 5900 or 5950X, as well as occasional combo deals that usually shipped with either B550 mobos, meh AIO coolers, meh PSUs or other unfortunate items (It hasn't been since December that Iv'e seen Newegg offer the combo for the 5950X along with 32GB DDR4 3600 Gskill RGB that was noted to be fantastic ram - strange that went away). Amazon seems to be a no-show for anything close to retail.

I'm glad I was finally able to get my chip of choice and look forward to sending my Haswell-E X99 build off to rebuild my server box that is WAY overdue , currently equipped with a Core 2 Quad! Now all I need is to decide on a cooling solution capable of getting the most out of the 5950X (will a 360mm rad AIO from Corsair , EKWB etc sufficient for a OC, or is custom liquid worthwhile?), and then deciding on a 32GB RAM kit (was thinking GSkill Trident Z Neo 3600mhz at minimum, but I'm unsure what's worthwhile in terms of cost/benefit going faster than 3600mhz or lower than CL18) to complete the core components.

My server upgrade is the reason I was doing an upgrade on my main system. Ryzen 2600x going to go in my server to replace the rather old but venerable Q6600. I was looking for a 5900x for mine but after a month of not seeing any availability I simply gave up and ordered a 5800x. Like yourself I've been watching Microcenter as I figured that's where I was going to have to get it. But almost as soon as I'm ready to buy they get no more in. Like you I was seeing occasional 5900x and 5950x at MC until all of a sudden they dried up completely and have stayed that way.

Yeah, a few weeks ago, there were a couple of times when Microcenter had 5950x stock that lasted a couple of days on both occasions. I waffled on driving over (about 2 hours away) and now regret it. Even my wife told me to go drive over and get one and I didn’t listen to her (that isn’t a first, however).

I'm interested in seeing APUs as well, particularly a Zen 3 successor to the ULV-ish 4800U (which had 8 cores, 16 threads). There's a project I'm working upon that might benefit from one of those SBC "4x4" style boards with a 4800U or preferably newer. It would be nice however if these APUs used RDNA2 GPU cores instead of Vega ones though

But actually having a retail launch this time-around will drop prices over sourcing those OEM-only goldbar prices . The better cache should meanup-to 30% faster per-core performance! over Renoir

Indeed! I'm to understand that AMD could really benefit from making this stuff accessible outside of OEM exclusives. For instance, there's a huge community of "Not quite full power desktop mITX" users ranging from ARM SoCs to various embedded / NUC / 4x4 etc... but especially on the more performant x86 end they're limited to often having to buy a complete OEM made device at a higher price point. If they made the APUs available cheaply, various mobos with different feature sets etc... they'd probably pick a lot of AMD chips in the 10-25w range especially if they had up to 8c/16t chips with decent clocks, RDNA2 GPU cores, and decent other features like I/O options. I guess the question is when these Zen3 powered APUs will be arriving.

im still waiting for AMD to put out a super-low TDP zen APU that can run fanless in laptops. I had a zenbook with the core m3 in it and man that thing was heaven for people that just needed something to email/browse/watch vids on. Completely fanless and not a single real moving part inside. Was sad to see that thing go :(

AMD could really take a bite into some ULV market share with an APU like that. Especially because Intel seems to restrict their Tiger Lake UP4 CPU's to surface pros and the like.

No idea how it stacks up in a laptop environment, but I know that even the older Renoir Zen2 APUs were supposedly pretty powerful given their low power requirement. I'm guessing the mobile Lucienne APUs, like a 5300U (4c / 8t) are even better, and possibly fanless if kept to a low power envelope. I'm looking at a 5700U (unless they offer more in the lineup soon) but I'm okay with a heatsink/fan seeking power over quiet, but still I don't anticipate its going to run that hot at all.

intel has also abandoned that shit with 10nm. because Tremont is now powerful enough to handle that job; If only they didn't have completely-shit yield, you could actually buy one!.

With only a sealed X570 Dark Hero in hand I am feeling super frustrated! Even thinking about selling it and getting a cheaper MOBO and 5800X combination, call it a day!!!!! Then get 6950x the moment it arrives!!!!!

I was in the same position until recently, but if you keep at it (check out the thread on stock notifications elsewhere on the forum) you could acquire your 5900x / 5950x at retail price. If you want to sell and pick up a 5600 or 5800X that would be easier (or even keep the board you already have already - its a great mobo and probably one of if not the best X570 around) as they are frequently available. However, I would not expect that when the next generation Zen4 Ryzen arrives, it will t be compatible with Socket AM4 and on your current Dark Hero. The next Ryzen will have a new socket, require DDR5 , maybe PCi-E 5.0, and USB4 native on a new chipset. This Ryzen generation is, to my knowledge the last generation on the AM4 socket and frankly, if things keep going the way they are I'm not sure that its likely the next generation will arrive in Q4 as planned - it may be delayed into 2022 given the shortages and fab limits.

What I meant was to get a cheap PC to tie me over for one year, so cheap X570 Mobo (something half price of Dark hero) + Cheap 5600X + cheap RAM. Then in a year, build a brand-new killer setup using the new socket MOBO + CPU + DDR5 RAM, basically a killer PC that I was planning to build now.
Anyway, I just ordered G.Skill Ripjaws 64GB so sticking with Dark Hero build ;-) Once I have all the parts in next 2 weeks hopefully, then I will make a snap decision to order 5800x or wait for 5950/5900X. Btw Ryzen 5800x/5600x are widely and easily available in Europe.

Edit- Apparently RAM price is going to rise more, so I did not want to wait any more. Also, there is rumour that AMD will be able to supply 20% more Ryzen 5900/5950X CPUs!

I was able to score a 5800x a month ago at Canada Computers at a local store. Similar to other posters in this thread, I literally had all other components for the build months ago, even got lucky enough to score an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra Gaming back in November at Canada computers (walked in, bought it at MSRP, actually $100 cheaper than it is listed for today).

So far the only AMD Ryzen 5000 parts I have seen in stock have been the 5600x and 5800x. I was originally planning to get a 5950x, but I was done waiting and just went with the 5800x when it came in stock. I use my computer for mostly gaming and some light work with VMs. The 5800x doesn't get enough credit. It is a solid processor and I really don't regret my decision at this point.

Not only does it not get any credit, it gets bad-mouthed pretty much everywhere because "for only $100 more you get 4 more cores!". That's great and all but if you don't need it or have other things to keep in mind like power consumption, cooling etc... Why spend $100 more?

The other side of the coin is why. For $150 less you get just two cores less and a lower tdp AND an included cooler. With the price dipping a bit at microcenter this isn't as strong an argument, but the 5600x at 299 is so strongly compelling that two measly cores for half that cost again is the hard sell.

The problem is that I need as many extra cores as possible :) I am a 3d designer and I need the cores for rendering, a 5800X would be ok if I could get hold of RTX3090 and instead use that for rendering. With GPUs no where in sight a higher core CPU like 5950x is the next best thing. This whole situation is driving me nuts, even though I try to stay calm ;-)

If anyone is looking for a 5950x, Microcenter in Sharonville, OH got a boatload of them. I picked up a 5950x, Dark Hero motherboard, and a Radeon 6700XT for my brother.
To follow on to my earlier post, the Maryland Microcenter locations seem to have also received a large allotment of the 5950. Get them while they last!

Thanks for the heads up. Saw your earlier post last night and managed to get a 5950x this morning from the Parkville MC. I arrived about 20 minutes before the store opened and was #25 in line. The website had listed some 3070's in stock and a couple different 6700xt's. However, once inside the store an employee called out saying there were no new gpu's to be had so the line for cpu's shrunk significantly. She did say they expect trucks to arrive on Tuesday's, Wednesdays and Fridays, never on a Sunday.

I took this Friday off to build and enjoy my new system but maybe I should get up at like 4 AM and drive over to Microcenter........ :D

My 5950x I managed to order on Amazon back on FEBUARY 3rd is finally shipping + charged on my cc yay! lol 🙃

Wow. That's all I can really say, lol. (I'm not saying backorders are not worse in other places, but still).other places, but still).

There was a big 'preorder' that day - some, few, have been fulfilled so far - many still waiting from that same day - I just had a golden ticket and wasn't cancelling it nor dealing with continuing the fox hunt somewhere else

Congratulations! I just checked mine (of course from the same day) and it still saying order received. Did you bug chat or just wait patiently and it finally happened?

Bugged chat back on March 4th and they basically gave me $50 credit as apology (also cause they 'upgraded' my shipping speed without me confirming and were gonna then charge me a little more so I had them undo that and then they offered credit to cover their ass on everything) that I used to get a WD Black 250GB NVME PCIe 3.0 SSD for free

I hadn't reached back out to them since then.

I tried chat, they immediately offered to cancel the order and I could then re-order and they would expedite the shipping. I immediately told them not to do that, and explained it was not possible to re-order as it was out of stock. Then they said well if it is out of stock we should cancel, no no no! Finally got them to stop, and all they said was I would receive an email when there is an update. I got a useless person, just my luck. Back to waiting.

Oh, they offered to cancel for me as well when I called - I was just like "no do not do that at all". Just hold onto your Golden Ticket, it will come through eventually is my advice.
