CDW Outlet Finds

SamirD - are you plugged in to servethehome? If in your travels, you happen across an excellent deal on cheap 16+-drive (LFF/3.5") chassis with SAS backplanes, lemme know? My Plex game is outgrowing my 16- and 12- bays. I'm actually planning on one large hardware change when the new Ryzens become readily available. Terrified about it, too. Data loss at this stage would be...extraordinary.

guess i bought a sold out thing then...
Bummer. So in about a week or so, you'll get a cancellation notice and I don't think your card was ever charged, maybe just authorized.

I'd call them just to make sure it wasn't you that got it and that's why it's showing sold out though. :D

I am! I love seeing all that high-end stuff I can't dream of getting. :ROFLMAO:

As you know 'cheap' is a relative word, so I don't know how cheap you're looking, but oddly enough I've been seeing these two guys pop up for the last few weeks.

HP D3710 25-bay 2.5" Gen10 that's normally well north of $2k for $1099 atm. I think it might have one more drop it in, but maybe to just under $1000 if even that much. This is about as low as it gets off msrp on these ime:
https://www.cdw.com/product/hpe-d3710-enclosure-bstk/5583129?pfm=srh

HP DL380 Gen10 Xeon 4110 16GB server that's normally $1600 or so for $1106 atm (which I think has 3 good drops left in it), with what seems to be configured for 8sff expansion according to hp partsurfer:
https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?searchText=p05524-b21

But these can hold up to 30sff drives depending on the riser and backplane configurations according to the specs:
https://buy.hpe.com/b2c/us/en/serve.../hpe-proliant-dl380-gen10-server/p/1010026818

This is a full-out server so it would be more than just an add-on and maybe a bit more than you want to do in terms of revamping storage since you would have to reconfigure it to handle 16+ drives. But it sounds like a great platform for a nice Plex server, and the crazy thing is that you can attach the d3710 to it and have almost 50 drives if you want. :D

Now, if you have lff drives, I know the specs on the DL380 said it could handle 12 in the front and I think 3 in the back, and the D3710 probably has a way to convert it to lff, but I didn't see anything on partsurfer about it:
https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=Q1J10A

Now, if you want to get a quick backup for now that's also portable, this 48TB thunderbolt array is a ridiculous steal at $1739 as b&h has it for $4400 and even ebay is over $2k for a used one:
https://www.cdw.com/product/g-tech-g-speed-shuttle-xl-48tb-8bay/5590028#PO

Thoughts?

i use a norco 4224 case.

Yeah, I think this unit blows anything in the outlet out of the water. (y)
Samir, you had a long and detailed response to my request and I've been trying to get some time to respond with an equally detailed answer as to my thoughts. I'll be brief (phone typing). The Norco is much more like what I need in my current environment. I used to run sever gear in my server chassis, but the older dual xeons I had were eating me up for power use. So, I switched out server gear for consumer gear (ivy bridge stuff, 3570k/32 gb non-ecc, etc) which sips power by comparison.

My trouble is I'm running out of pci lanes and places to put HBA's. I definitely need to upgrade to 16 port HBA's, rather than 8's. Off topic. Anyways.

When the new Ryzen stuff hits, I'm hoping to pick up second gen Ryzen gear, or maybe even jump on the third gen stuff, which would transcode leaps and bounds more than what I have - and be power efficient. I'm not familiar enough with server gear to know what the highest passmark per watt efficient stuff is, but I'm confident I can't afford it. Or am unwilling to allocate that much to the project - probably. I've already got around $3-4k tied up in my Plex server now - and it costs about $50/mo to run the thing. It feels like I'm on the edges of cost/benefit as it is.

you can also get sas expanders. i use intel because i didnt want to deal with flashing but yyou might be fluent enough to bother with flashing the hp sas expannder. there is a dedicated thread on it

An option, yes, but I really try to not share bandwidth if I can avoid it. It will eventually become unavoidable, of course. I'm hoping to greatly improve available lanes at upgrade time.

Completely understandable and the Norco is what I was thinking of but knowing the CDW usually just doesn't carry too much stuff like that. Worth a shot anyways. :)

2080ti is $703. But non-reference blower cards suck.
Yup, not available...

This one is $979. I'm watching a couple on ebay, that are bidding under 900, but by new sellers. Prolly should steer clear! https://www.cdw.com/product/evga-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-xc-ultra-b/5616263

That's a heck of a good price, eh? I surely don't need to upgrade from my 1070 or 1080 for photo editing, but maybe for vid editing, or if I ever get around to more than very occasional game playing.... whaddya think?

I don’t suspect there will be a worthwhile gain with 2080ti over your 1070 or 1080 for hobby based video editing. I don’t think the RTX enhancements on the Turing architecture have any bearing on that type of work.

Yes, discourage the purchase so that someone else can get it. :D

This is one of the reasons I don't post what I'm watching--there's so many people watching this thread now that a good deal posted will be a good deal gone.

That being said, I'll probably share some of the deals I've gotten and their prices once I get them and put them to use. (y)

Are you sure? I got a confirmation email. When I checked order status it returned an error until now. Now it says not shipped yet.

Does it have a 6 character order number? If so, then you got it! :D

I'm going to share these as I've gotten as many of them as I need. This IS the cheapest price for these in the outlet or elsewhere at $39, which is much cheaper than the $100+ these genuine APC units go for normally. I've been watching these for almost a month now and one unit that was ahead of this batch got pulled to liquidation at this price so these WILL be gone to liquidation in a day or two.

https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-replacement-battery-cartridge-6/5558243?pfm=srh

I've got 2 UPSes that have been using these batteries exclusively for the last 15 years and each battery lasts almost a full 5 years. I watch for replacement batteries regularly in the outlet and then scoop them up when they're cheap. ;)

Shipping on these is almost as much as the battery, but even after all that is said and done, you're still well under the usual $100+ for these. (y)

A lot of people don't know supermicro's history, but they have been around a very long time. I actually have a cyrix p166+ system that was based on their motherboard. (y)

Got impatient. Bought an 846 with X8DTI-LN4F two e5620 and 48gb of RAM for $260 shipped. Not sure if there's any other processors that might make that board worthwhile. I think it can fit 5600-series 6 cores @80w but not sure.

Not a killer deal, but, I got pissed off falling behind my buddy's setup. So. It had to be done.

The e5620s are pretty decent as that's what I have in my r410 right now, and you should be able to upgrade to the x5670 which will use a little more power, but also give you a few more cores. Then there's the x5690 which is a lot more power, but ups the single thread performance since it's at 3.5Ghz without the turbo:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compar...on-X5670-vs-Intel-Xeon-X5690/1249vs1307vs1314

Luckily, these chips are fairly cheap and so is the ram for this era so I think it's a solid move. (y)

What's the x- vs e- designation difference? Power usage is a major, major factor for me.

I've generally found the e-series to be more power conscious, but a lot of times the performance suffers too. Sometimes the x is more power, but other times the same, but more performance. It's really all over the place to the point you have to look at individual chips to really know what's what. Also, definitely check out the e/x55xx series as these chips are generally the same performance as the x/x56xx series but cost less because they're older (and may be missing some cpu features so check that too before jumping).

Here is a dropbox folder with some photos of it and the built-in screen. I can't log into the thing for some reason. I have to contact eaton support to figure out login and password for the UPS.

Nice! Looks like it arrived in great shape! Amazing to see 400va loads being considered at 'just' 18%.

Yeah, so these are the type of things you can possibly run across with outlet items, but to just make a call to find out how to reset the login in order to save $1000--most of us will say, "yes please". (y)

I use that same model at work -- admin/admin is default if you're using the Network-MS management card. You can also reset the network management card password from the console. User Manual, see section 7:

Some serious deals to be found in ups's as of late: https://www.cdw.com/search/?key=ups...sr=1&sortby=priceasc&maxrecords=72&pcurrent=1

Like these Liebert 1500va units that are normally at least $1000 for $258. I don't think these will drop any more and might not even be there tomorrow:

And this APC 1500va unit that must be something special at a normal price of $1500+ for only $450:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-smart-ups-srt-1500va-rm-120v-bs/5583141?pfm=srh

Or these APC 1500va units that come with a nic and are usually $1000+ because of that for only $377:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-smart-ups-x-1500va-bstk/5571623?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-smart-ups-x-1500va-bstk/5571621?pfm=srh

Or this Tripplite 3000va that's normally $1200+ for $503:
https://www.cdw.com/product/tripp-3000va-ups-smart-online-3u-rm/5585593?pfm=srh

Or this Eaton 3000va that's $2000+ for $580:
https://www.cdw.com/product/eaton-9px-3000va-gl-rt-208v-bstk/5554911?pfm=srh

They have a lot of big bad boys too
Eaton 6000va that's usually $3500+ for $1160:

APC 10,000va that's usually $6100+ for $1980:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-smart-ups-srt-10kva-rm-230v-bst/5571728?pfm=srh

Some great deals on replacement batteries too:
Genuine APC RBC6 for only $39. I watch these regularly as we use them and anything under $100 is a deal. This is the lowest these will go as some other units at this price left the outlet to go to liquidation at this price:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-replacement-battery-cartridge-6/5558243?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-replacement-battery-cartridge-6/5558367?pfm=srh

Genuine APC RBC133 that's usually $200+ for $66. I think I got this exact same unit for only $20 when it was mislisted as an RBC33.
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-ups-replacement-battery-bstk/5569262?pfm=srh
another one for $82 that will drop to $66 at some point:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-ups-replacement-battery-bstk/5587753?pfm=srh

Genuine APC RBC11 that's even $150+ for generics for only $80:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-replacemnt-battery-cartridge-11/5562932?pfm=srh

Genuine Cyberpower RB1290X4A replacement battery that I couldn't find for under $170 for $87. This one will probably drop at least 2 more times before being sent off to liquidation:
https://www.cdw.com/product/cyberpower-ups-repl-batt-cartridge/5600933?pfm=srh
https://www.cdw.com/product/cyberpower-ups-repl-batt-cartridge/5601930?pfm=srh

Genuine APC RBC12 that's usually $280+ for $129. I would expect this one to drop at least 1-2 times before being sent off to liquidation:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-replacement-bat-for-su2200-bstk/5587668?pfm=srh

Genuine APC RBC105 that's usually $280+ for $130. I would expect this one to drop at least 1-2 times before being sent off to liquidation:
https://www.cdw.com/product/apc-genuine-repl-batt-cart-105-bst/5586224?pfm=srh

Lots more stuff in there like nics and whatnot too.
