Prey (2017)

There are a lot of creative ways to get around in this game. I always feel like I'm going to break something doing it too, because it's the sort of thing that if you pulled it off in other games, the engine would "forget" to trigger some event or something because you didn't get to the area "correctly". :D So far, every time I've done something weird, or used a weird method to get some place everything worked out perfectly. This game handles unorthodox methods very well.
I did this at the very beginning of the game. When you wake up the second time I immediately found a way to jump up into the rafters using the shelves and had to make my way backward to find out how to open the exit . Too bad the intro scenes were broken .

IGN changed the review to 8/10 I talked to a IGN rep in the Destiny twitch chat lol...

Some of it is a bit wacky - like Leverage 1 items can be thrown against (or clipped) Leverage 2 and 3 items to move them. But then again sometimes the Gloo stuff is wacky too (like covering up leaks in fire pipes, etc.).

Before the first patch, I was in Crew Quarters and was able to mantle up above the map and clipped right through nothingness.

New patch just deployed. It brings the game up to version 1.03. The download was 477 MB for me.

The Steam update v1.03 includes:
  • Further fixes to prevent save games from becoming corrupted. Fix also returns corrupted save games to uncorrupted state.
  • Items should no longer be incorrectly deleted from inventory or world when changing levels.
  • Fix for stamina not recovering.
  • Fix for being unable to repair items.
  • Player should no longer spawn out of level.
  • Fabricated weapons are now empty.
  • Fix for humans incorrectly turning hostile. Hostile humans in lobby will be returned to friendly.
  • End game credits now always skippable.
  • Aaron Ingram no longer cowers if spooked by a typhon.
  • Fix for various problems making changes in the settings.
  • FOV slider is available in the advanced options menu.

Still no toggle to run. Makes the sliding action nearly impossible on default keybinds (which there are still only one).

This annoyed me to no end in Dishonored 1 (but you could ini hack it), and it was fixed without mention in Dishonored 2.

I broke the textures.. Didn't take a picture but gloo gunned up into the crew quarters upper beds/pods, and when I jumped, I jumped through the ceiling of the pod and stood on top of the textures.. Couldn't get out, luckily had a save only 60 seconds before. I quick save like mad in this game though. Especially now I'm up to the part where Nightmares randomly spawn.. I've just avoided them so far, because I've not put on any Typhon mods.. Staying pure :p. Lol. (Also means bullets are a pain.. Run out so fast lol)

Ah that's the same area I was able to clip through the map also.

Yep, another great game, with amazing gameplay, graphics, it just goes together fantasticly. All in all, the blood is little, the violence is low compared to other games, and this really shouldn't have been rated M. It easily could have got a T rating.

Alcohol use automatically gives the game an 'M' rating. Similar to how movies briefly got an 'R' rating automatically if it depicted smoking. The type of violence depicted can also mean the difference between a 'T' and 'M' rating. Executions are one example of crossing that line, along with deaths considered extreme such as impalement. The board of the ESRB rates games based on the archaic idea that they are toys.

Been playing for about 30 hours now. I like it. I am the stop and look around type.

I see some concepts from Bioshock in it (like the lettering used in the space station), some Fallout 4 (the design of the refrigerators) and some Dwarven architecture from Skyrim (the gold inlays in the windows on some of the offices and at the bottom of door arches/frames).

The only criticisms are that I cannot keybind reload to my middle mouse button (push down) and I cannot aim down the sites even with Mouse 2 button. It is intuitive for me to do this in a shooter and so I have tripped up and died several times while playing.

I have not had any problems with it at all (but I started playing it a week after it came out). It plays very smooth on an older system with a newer graphics card (2600K, 16GB, 1080) and all setting cranked up.

Has anyone lately noticed some odd stuttering? Since the latest Nvidia driver update? 1070 and 4690k at 4.2ghz here. Was especially bad in the reactor control room area..

I caved and bought this game...first opening scene in-game and it crashes. :(

Guess I will try updating some drivers?

NV? I updated mine the night before it unlocked, and haven't had a single problem. Hope it does the trick for you.

Yeah, I think that worked...played for a half hour or so with no crashes this time.

The UI kind of bugs me in that you want to use the mouse to interact with things but typically you have to use F or some other key unless you "examine" the item.

Still, seems like a sufficiently creepy game so far. :)

I'm pretty much stuck, I have little resources, pretty much no ammo, and don't know how to get that stupid f*ing elevator to work. Don't know if I'll continue playing. Flying around in zero gravity is massively annoying to me as well.

beat it last night. 13 hours for my first playthrough, i didn't finish every side mission, may reload my game back up and finish a few more at some point but it was a solid game, totally worth the price in the $30-$40 range on G2A/GMG etc.

Finished too. 21 hours total with a fair amount of backtracking etc. I got it for 50 AUD so sounds right by comparison. Got the 'good' ending'. Lol.

The elevator takes a while to start working again you need to kill a few things to get it going too. It's a bit of a pain XD. Need to get through to the Arboretum via GUTS first.

I agree flight is annoying.

I'm at the GUTS section now. Taking my time and really enjoying the game so far. I'm gathering lots of stuff, having fun exploring, and doing side quests.

This game has much more in common with System Shock 2 than it does the first Prey, if anyone reading is still confused about that. I would love to see SS2 remade using this engine (while the devs work on SS3 of course). :)

Are corpses / objects persistent in this game? I notice that the corpses do seem to hang around a long time, but do they persist through level loads? I collected some damaged turrets and put them in my office, but I wonder if they will just disappear.

I would think that they should stay. I haven't taken any to my office but any time that I have moved turrets around a level, they've stayed where I left them.

OK, so I'm trying to get to Bellamy's body in the morgue. Can someone who did this side quest chime in?

Per an email I found, a Science Operator is supposed to enter the morgue (which is locked) every half hour and I'm supposed to follow it in. But no Science Operator ever shows up. I've stood near the door both on the hour and on the half hour, but nothing ever comes near there. Is my game bugged?

I got caught on that for a little while myself until I realized:

Use the Huntress Boltcaster. It's not a gimmick or useless like I first wondered about. Knock out the glass on the side, shoot a bolt at the button that opens the door.

I figured there was more than one way to get in there but hadn't thought about that. ;)

I find myself backtracking to recycle shit far too often in this game...inventory management is one of the least fun mechanics in gaming IMO, and unfortunately you have to do a lot of it in this game. Also, sometimes for no apparent reason, items come into your inventory and don't stack (Spare Parts seem notorious for this), but then when you do an auto-sort they do stack.

It would also be nice if the raw materials didn't take up inventory space.

I do like the exploration aspect and verticality, though there have been several places that I've come across that just sort of seem like you HAVE to have Leverage or some similar skill in order to get into an area, with no alternative route.

Yeah that failure of inventory to properly stack was noted in the IGN review...seems like something that could be easily patched and fixed (hopefully it will be).

I too have noticed areas where it seems like Leverage II or III is required to access - I moved on if I didn't see another way in but hopefully there is another way to access most of those locations because I'm not sure yet that I want to spend a bunch of Neuromods on Leverage just yet. Maybe later if I have extras to burn. It'd be nice to have but seems largely situational so right now I'm building up other areas that I'm deeming to be more beneficial overall.

Well, it reminds me of the way Deus Ex tried to do it but so far, not as well implemented. In DX you generally had at least 2 or 3 ways to get to any area, whether it be hacking, busting through a wall, finding a keycard, etc. In Prey it seems there are some areas (not all) that require one very specific method of getting in and that's it. Those areas are probably optional and just contain some loot, but I don't really feel like replaying the game a second time just to get those items with a different build.

I used the glitch the day before they patched it saved alot of time too bad they took out the fun stuff.

I picked this up the other day for 26$ and I have to say I have enjoyed it thus far. I just made my way out of my apartment and into the next section where you have to find the key card. I find myself searching every frekkin' nook and cranny or jumping up shelves, moving boxes so I can jump higher. I blame my OCD on this as it compels me to keep SEARCHING =/

Gameplay is pretty fun so far. Yes, the graphics could be better, especially on the visual scenery and testure models, but game play seems pretty good and for a console port, it actually plays well on PC

Not feeling this one, sorry, the first one was a true underrated classic. I hate movies and games that use a title to build a base but have no loyalty to the original.

I loved the original. It was definitely underrated as you say. It had some interesting and unique features and aesthetics. It also had a few very memorable moments, and even pioneered some game-play elements that are still used now. However, it wasn't an absolutely spectacular game, the likes of which we had never seen, or never would again. It was a VERY good game, but not some incredible high-water mark by which all other games should be measured.

With that out of the way, the new Prey, IMO is actually a better game than the old one. Who cares what they call it? So Arkane ended up with the name by way of Bethesda. It doesn't really matter one way or the other. So they called it Prey. Never once have they seemed like they were trying to cash in on the original. In your words, the original was underrated. I bet most people never even played it. So how would they gain an audience by attempting to exploit the original? If anything this new one might get the old one a bit more attention by proxy.

The new Prey does not attempt to reference the old one. It's just a good game all on its own. If you're into games like System Shock, maybe the Bios, and possibly a touch of Dead Space, then you'd like this game, plain and simple. If you don't like that style of game, then you probably won't like this either. That's fair enough. However, not playing this because you don't like the fact that they used the same name? I think that's absolutely silly.

Even the sequel that had been planned by Human Head wasn't going to follow the first story line, so there really wasn't ever going to be a continuation of that one anyway.
