NieR Automata

In the grand scheme of things PC support is still fairly new to the majority of Japanese developers. Companies like Nihon Falcon and Capcom have years of experience with the PC but for a lot of studios like Platinum, NIS, XSEED/Marverlous, and even the Japanese side of Square Enix it's all fairly new territory. You are seeing a slow, but steady, improvement though. The three Dark Souls games all got better ports with each iteration, SE still has issues though arguably they're improving as well, and for Platinum's second attempt at a PC title Nier seems okay. One major bug and a few weird design decisions that are just common with Japanese development. Unless Japanese development itself goes through a radical shift we're not likely going to get away from 30 or 60fps locks in games as it's common for Japanese devs to tie animations to frame rate and some with all the other weird or quirky (depending on how you look at it) things they do when developing games. Some of that weirdness is part of the charm of these off-the-wall niche Japanese titles and I wouldn't want it to change but on the other hand I feel there is a lot Japanese developers can learn from how Western studios make games.

Yeah the Pro is 1080p/60, though it doesn't stay at 60 at all times. Check out Digital Foundry's video on the PS4 version and you'll get a feel for how it performs on the Pro. Seems decent enough.

yup t is absolutely a cultural thing straight up. Platinum usually does BETTER than most other japanese developers.

Honestly you can up the resolution and the work around to play in windowed borderless is pretty simple just download the program.

the biggest draw back right now for me though is for some reason my cut scenes are skipping automatically. NO idea why

Can anyone confirm 21:9 support? There's a lot of mixed information out there.

Looks like it's running fine in 21:9 here, albeit with maybe a stretched hud and stretched cutscenes. But the actual game doesn't look stretched.

Totalbiscuit shows it here in his options, though he couldn't play in that mode since it was just a fake entry he put in his monitor profile to test it. Video starts when he gets into it.....

I wish I had an ultrawide monitor to try it out. Maybe some day....

I want to play, but I hear that the developers need to patch the game for AMD GPU users or revert my drivers. ;(

I went ahead and bought it and can confirm that 21:9 does indeed work. I do however have the same full screen bug that others have. Meaning, I have to play it windowed to get the full 3440x1440 resolution.

The game is very cool so far. Prologue is non-stop action and there's little to no hand holding. I'm loving the dynamic switching of camera angles. It goes from standard third person to 2d side scrolling and an overhead view. Lots of variety to keep things interesting. Combat is very smooth but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of the various combos you can do. Lots of learning to do! Music is also pretty awesome! I think I'm going to like this game. :)

Still regretting the PS4 purchase since my PC is vastly more powerful, but enjoying the game so far.

It's odd -- I like it, a lot, yet find it can rarely hold my interest for more than 30 minutes to /maybe/ an hour. I think I'm finding the color palette a drain? So much brown...

From some of the videos I've seen the enemy variety looks to be lacking as well. Can someone with the game comment on that?

Also, I keep seeing this referred to as an RPG but in most gameplay videos I barely see any RPG elements other than an XP bar. Is there gear/crafting/other RPG-ish things in this game?

It has an in-depth story with multiple endings, gear, gear upgrades, and a system similar to a materia system. It has just has an action combat system.. so it's basically an action rpg w/ shoot em up elements.

Some of them look a lot a like... honestly I havent really noticed. There are plenty of different fighting patterns thats what matters. For the most part they are meant to look similar its part of the story.

There are RPG elements there is gear and upgrading gear, materials, items, chips for upgrades a huge upgrade system your pod has a bunch of special attacks to choose from - starting one is a giant lazer and I have a huge hammer attack

honestly the combat is pretty fun too. There is plenty of depth and the story is surprisingly good. I honestly went in very blind and this is probably one of the best games I have ever played. I hope the fullscreen thing gets patched but otherwise.. I'm in love.

Loving this game. Runs great, looks gorgeous. Sure the actual graphics could be better in some ways, but the art style, environments, characters, machines, etc. are quite nice to look at. Just heading out a bit from the resistance camp, and having fun. (Basically past prologue and just starting into the actual world/game.)

No stability issues, controls are tight as one would expect from a Platinum game.

Music and sound is pretty much perfect. Kind of reminds me of things like Akira, Metropolis, and maybe some Miyazaki movie soundtracks.

Definitely recommend the game.

Yeah I totally forgot to mention the music. Its so good in some locations. I actually thought I would hate the art style but the more I play the more beautiful I find it. In the desert the game is absolutely stunning.

IMO a controller is necessary though and getting used to no autosave is a bitch lol.

Yoko Taro's (the game director) writing is severely underrated outside of the small niche of people that have really dug into his games. I don't recommend playing Drakengard 1 or 3 (he wasn't involved in 2), but just looking into what he does with the story parts of those games can give you an idea of where his talent lies. If you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 I do highly highly recommend playing the first Nier after you're done with Automata. There aren't a ton of connections between the two games, outside of one big one, but it does tell you a lot about the state the world is in and it's just really well done. Automata's gameplay is better, but Nier is still playable if a little rough around the edges.

This game is so weird. Just fought a naked dude with no genitalia. You could almost label this a Hideo Kojima game.

When you first enter the alien graveyard, are you supposed to fight the two naked clone dudes? They started to have a conversation with us, and out of nowhere 9S attacks one of them which forced me into battle. And as we're battling, we're still carrying on a cool and collective conversation with them. Near the end of the conversation, it returns to a cut scene in which we are no longer fighting. I was so confused.

Having been disillusioned with ME:A, I was wondering if this game might fit my action-RPG itch? The only thing holding me back is I'm not a fan generally of Japanese RPGs: the style, hokieness, twee factor.

I had never even heard of this until yesterday when I visited my brother and he was playing it. The reviews I've read have been nothing short of stellar. I don't really want to drop $60 on it, but when it comes down a little and they get a few patches under their belt, I am absolutely picking this up. Looks amazing.

Don't count on it getting too many patches. SE won't even give them to money to do DLC, I'd be surprised if they were given the budget to do anything major patch wise.

Action RPG. People really need to make this distinction when talking about it. Think more along the lines of Dark Souls, not Final Fantasy.

Why do all of these companies treat Platinum Games like dirt? Are they lowballing the competition and then wanting / needing to do more? The games all seem so cool stylistically and great controls with a robust fighting system.

No idea. Bayonetta 2 and Nier: Automata are some of my favorite games of the last few years. I think they were probably treated ok by Nintendo for B2, but I wouldn't expect much out of Square/Enix these days.

This is 100% on my must play list but I can't put down horizon and I need to play blood borne still.

Yoko Taro's games tend to be fairly niche games with a hardcore, but not huge, audience. Platinum titles also tend to fall into that category. Both get severely underrated and overlooked by a lot people despite the immense amount of good word of mouth.

Since this title uses Denuvo, I wonder if there is a risk in using mods...

Haven't had an issue with the resolution fix so far. Gameplay seems to be fairly smooth on my 1070, there are some inexplicable moments where frame times are incredibly high (many tens of milliseconds) but nothing to really complain about.
The real shame is that cutscenes are completely broken on the PC port; there is some kind of frame pacing issue that causes to run at way less than even the 30FPS they are spec'ed to run at.

They did announce that they've seen the posts about issues and are investigating. So no official fix yet.. but I imagine it's coming.
there's been a third-party fix ("Fix Automata Resolution") that patches that bug, improves frame pacing, and lets you drop down the global illumination settings (resulting in a major performance boost, almost 2x on mobile and 700-series hardware).

What's up with Nier: Automata on PC?

Amateurish issues mar what could have been one of Platinum's best PC games...

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-whats-up-with-nier-automata-on-pc

it doesn't take anything away from the quality of the game if you ask me.

fullscreen thing is annoying but otherwise I have no issues - I think I had one crash.

I should mention I have a gtx 1080 so performance isn't an issue for me. Not bragging, just saying it affects my opinion.

No issues on my 1070 either. The game is pretty close to perfect. The devs have even mentioned that they're working on fixes for the PC bugs in a Steam update post. I think they're doing very well for not really being a PC dev. This game has been nothing but a positive experience for me so far.

How does the global illumination setting affect graphics?

No I meant, does turning it down have a negative affect on the graphical quality?
dropping it to Off definitely impacts graphical quality; Low has some impact in indoor areas with lots of secondary lighting; Medium, High, and Ultra seem to be roughly the same.
It really only matters if you want to play at 4K or you have sub-GTX 970 hardware, otherwise Ultra (game's defaults) work fine.

So kind of interested in getting this. How hard is it to play with a keyboard and mouse or is a controller better?
