Nearly 10 Percent of Resident Evil 7 Players Play in VR

The eagle eyed guys over at IGN have been peering through the Resident Evil 7 stats over on residentevil.net and noticed that almost 10% of all Resident Evil 7 players play in VR. As the IGN folks noted, that's a lot of soiled undies.

Personally, I have been waiting for some real AAA titles to get their feet wet with VR and for the tech to really take off before I take the plunge. As of right now VR in Resident Evil 7 is only for PS4 players, but if this trend continues on the PC platform, count me in!

Given that PlayStation 4 is currently the only platform that offers VR support for Resident Evil 7 - and considering that the nascent VR market still has a relatively small audience - the fact that 87,000 players have used VR for Resident Evil is a significant milestone for the technology's adoption.

I've read reports it's exclusive to PS4 VR for 1 year. I played the demo and loved it. I didn't even know it was coming out in VR, which makes 100% sense now I think about it. I was planning on buying it based on the demo, but now I'm not going to on principle. 1-3 months of exclusivity is annoying, but understandable. 1 year though? That's ridiculous.

Cue a bunch of nerds with "it's their content, they can do what they want". You're not wrong, but here's one sale they just lost.

Yeah, I have to wonder how much Sony paid them for that one, and if it was worth it (both for Sony, and for Capcom)

I'd be pissed if I had a VR setup. Hopefully, by the time this is released for PC I'll actually have one and a video card powerful enough to make it look good.

gee really? damn, now i feel old...

..but but i like the display keyboard mouse speakers thing, now what? oh my god

I'm loving the normal version. One of my friends has the PS4 version and while he enjoys the game in VR, he said that it's not quite right. I guess aiming works terrific and you can even look around corners, but normal exploration is a pain. Some action encounters with lots of circle strafing can be a hassle, too. Some of it's the nature of VR and some of it is the nature of a game that isn't necessarily always great at action sequences to begin with. I figure I'll probably grab a used copy of the PS4 version later just to give it a spin.

and it would be even higher if you tossers would let people with real VR headsets (VIVE and Oculus) use it instead of selling out to Playstation.

All VR platforms should be open and embrace cross platform development to increase consumer engagement overall and grow the market. Fact is Sony know their VR is crap and rely on exclusive content to suck people in.

Is PSVR that much worse then Vive and Oculus? haven't used either.

I agree. I have a ps4pro and it is bad practice IMO to do that. If VR is going to grow it needs to be easily available and to any platform or it will die as a niche.

Yea it is there right as you say, but I do wonder what does that exclusivity cost considering the lost sales at risk?

For tracking yes its much worse and easily disrupted. For room scale on the VIVE well it doesnt have it lol

The tracking of the headset isn't bad. Only if you get out of the view range of the camera do you lose tracking. Like you bend down to the ground to pick up something and your staring at the ground. That's pretty much the only time I've lost tracking. Now the move controllers are junk. It tends to look like you're slightly shaking, like your hands are shivering in the cold or something. Overall it really isn't as bad for the type of games they have for it. I couldn't imagine trying to play like an FPS with those move controllers. Not with that shaking.

Well, I got RE7 for PC anyways. Not sure how well I'd do with it in VR. I tend to play games for like 3-7 hours and with VR, I barely make it 1 hour. Any more and I'd probably hurl.

Without sony there are high chances we wouldnt have seen re7 in vr at all. I played through on a pro + psvr and im still not convinced my rift and high end rig would add much to the experience ( this has something to do with the display differences of the headsets )

I hear the Rift and Vive do better with tracking, while the PS VR has less screen door effect. I don't know, as I have yet to try the others. I know someone with a Vive, but not really close with them. All I know is I want to make a ceiling mount to hold the cables and another hook to hold the headset when I'm not using it. Those cables are annoying.

I've heard that Resident Evil 7 currently looks terrible when you try to force VR support through the Oculus driver on PC.

way too soon for them to be excluding other makers. VR is still a niche and even then their first gen models (all of them) need tweaking. For 2nd gen to even make it companies need to open doors to developers across the board.

If people want VR to survive developers and publishers are going to have to avoid doing exclusivity deals like this. I wouldn't be surprised if this number would be closer to 25-30% if it were available on PC right now.

Include me in the no sale. Yeah, 1-3 months I could see but a year. I find it hard to not play a game with VR and was really excited about this game...

The PSVR is good in a small space and it's relatively painless to get up and running. It works really well for games that keep you seated and not moving about too much.
Graphically it's not on par with the Vive and it doesn't track motions as well either...but it's also 1/2 the cost and doesn't need the same kind of horsepower either.
I find that it's a great introduction to VR and it's light years ahead of the Samsung/Google options, but it's a full generation behind the Vive. Never tried the PC Oculus so I can't compare that one.
