Win 7 Or Win 10?

Oh god, here we go.

Please explain the fundamental and/or technical difference between Win10 and Win7 that prevents the inclusion of DX12 in 200 words or less. Please double space and write in an APA style. You will be graded on sounding like a MS shill and using asshattery such as "UXP", "progress", "Unified platform", etc. This assignment is worth 1 internet point.

What "could be" is immaterial, because it will never happen. Ever. Ever. DX12 will never appear in 7.

Direct X is a Component Object Model application and those are tied deeply into their version Windows. Yeah, it could have been done but that would have been a lot of work for Windows 7 which was already past the time for new features when 10 came out last year.

As some have said, Win 7 or 8.1 and startisback/classicshell.

I have 10 on a laptop and am going to ditch it for 8.1/classicshell.

Win 7 Or win 10?
Gaming and MOST importantly, low annoyance and hassle level...

advice or comments?

I went with Windows 10 in the last month of the free update. No regrets or issues, and my AMD video card has enjoyed a nice framerate boost in DX12 games.

For gaming I feel my performance on 10 is better overall. I would also say 10 is more annoying. Once you get in and turn off all the stupid shit the annoyance factor goes way down, not perfect but workable.

I feel like microsoft is doing its best to kill window 7 off before the end of support in 2020. The condition of windows update for 7 is horrible. They just don't seem interested in fixing it. I get new windows 7 laptops(multiple brands) in and have to troubleshoot them from the start because they can't get updates installed. All the windows ten setups I've done in the past six months have taken way less time and have been much smoother.

Newer CPUs will be supported and will work. Just the new extensions wont ""if"" Intel/AMD dont release a driver with the added features.
Those take years to become mainstream because they have no effect on current software.
ie AVX, AVX2.

DX12 for the most part makes performance worse. It brings no quality improvement.
Its better to use DX11 and in the case of TombRaider, you can use higher quality Ambient Occlusion thats not available in DX12.

Yeah essential extensions will work for the most part, some patches thou can benefit performance even if it's insignificant. It took a while but I think amd buldozer eventually got extra extension support from MS a year or so later. For most people it might be insignificant yields since some of those extensions might only benefit certain programs or application types.

On the whole DX12 when I did the open beta for Battlefield 1. DX11 gave me higher frame rate but on DX12 my frames were more consistent and my minimum FPS never dropped below a certain level. It's not the best example since the final game wasn't out. I might have also benefited more from dx12 because it bridged the performance between my aged cpu and my gpu. Maybe DX12 performance will improve in the future once more modern dx12 cards come out or maybe we might not see as good yields but why not have the option to choose between dx11 and dx12.
Right now
There are no consistent improvements but in the future that might change with better programming from developers,
newer Dx12 hardware, maybe DX12 was meant to bridge the performance gap on older cpu to newer gpu. There's also xbox games ported to the pc that DX12 only.

I don' tthink this is true. The issue is that the chipset requires drivers; and intel has said that the newer chipset (post skylake's) will not have windows 7 driver. This doesn't mean they won't do it but I suspect they won't. My personal hope is that I can move to linux 100% for games by the time win 7 expire. Teh trigger point to avoid window 10 was the crap that ms pulled during the free upgrade period. I actually have a legal copy of windows 10 I just refuse to run it.

They dont need a new driver to function.
Only for new features.

Yes but doesn't 'new feature' include the new usb ports and changes to pcei ssd interface ?
The mfrs supply drivers.
Its not related to Microsofts support of the CPU.

Hate the interface and shovelware. Also fuck cortana. I'll upgrade when I see a decent corporate edition rolled out.

Windows 7. Windows 10 offers nothing more than what Windows 7 has except for all the bloat Win 10 offers. The Windows store is a joke and will never take off to the level Steam or even Origin is at. Dx12 is also a bust and has been proven in benchmarks that it runs worse than Dx11.

The best illustration of what DX12 could be is an emulator (Dolphin) that relies on a legal grey area to even exist.

I've been using Windows 10 for a while now and so far it's been running just fine for me.
The addition of Xbox Anywhere has been awesome. I've been playing Gears of War 4 with the wife and some friends, everyone is playing the console version but me and I'm always leading the ranks in horde with that mouse and keyboard advantage :)

I had Windows 10 on my laptop and it drove me crazy. I got all kinds of weird stuff happening, like the OS updating itself (because, of course, you have no choice when that happens) and some of my programs disappearing. <shakes head>

I just got Windows 7 installed and I'm so much happier. It will be a while before DX12 makes it worth it. There aren't enough games optimized for it yet.

I will always pick 7 over 10.

You can install SHUTUP10 and block anything you want including updates. https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

I use it and get zero hassle.

Windows 10 has caused me many headaches. It seems to just always be doing something behind your back that taxes resources. I have a laptop with a 6700hq, 1 ssd for everything, that often locks up, seemingly because the SSD usage is pegged at 100% sometimes along with high CPU usage. I just figured I'd have to move to 10 eventually anyway so might as well get used to it. Gears of War 4 helped push me to it even though that game ended up being pretty lackluster.

A lot of trouble has been from people who upgraded from 7 to 10. Is that what you did?

Fresh install, multiple times on separate hard drives in fact. My desktop PC runs better but I attribute that to the fact that it's on a LOT more than my laptop and it has a separate SSD for the OS.

Been tempted to upgrade from 8.1 Pro (classic shell) to 10, but my machine just runs too smoothly for me to go through with it. Probably will try 10 when I'm ready to just blow out and reformat all my drives for a clean installation.

This:
My wife and her father bought laptops in the last year that came with 10. They are complete turd boxes for 10 to 30 minutes after boot up thanks to 10 bs'ing around with the updates and everything else. After it stops they run wonderfully.

My HTPC I did the dumb "update" thing to see how bad it was and wow it made the system even worse, ontop of the boot up delay due to updates. Over thanksgiving I built my parents a new PC and put on one of the programs that allows you to get the OS in line and not rape the resources.

Their system from being completely off can boot 100% in the OS and be fully functional before the monitor wakes up and realizes there is a signal to display (2 to 2.5 seconds). With everything disabled and blocked (outside of the OS as most of it from within is even harder and can cause other issues such as the metered connection stuff) one can really appreciate 10. If the feature I saw rumored today or yesterday about deferring updates for 35 days comes to fruition I will finally switch.

Windows 7 is configured just the way I like it and I have no real need to update, don't care and cant use DX12 right now anyway so until the GPU is upgraded faster boot times is not enough of a gain for me (OS is on its own 850 Pro SSD).

I do like that they made 10 so front end friendly that it can take care of itself overall, but they really should have an advanced mode (hell even stupid exe / .msi installers have them) so users can tweak and customize. If MS mines the data and see that 90% of the users disabled auto updates... I run a lot of updates, just not every time windows says they are available. And if I need my system running, I don't need windows telling me to hang on for 15 minutes for it to install the bejeweled demo again.

I never had an ounce of trouble with Windows 8, at least beyond the initial learning curve of figuring it out. I ran a single clean install of Windows 8 through the entire life of the OS.
Ironically the only other time I had that situation was with Vista. The two "bad" OS's served me pretty well.

Windows 10 over 7 or 8 anytime.
I don't even understand why are people having issues with it. It works flawlessly for me.
Windows 7 is great. But it's old, outdated and doesn't support the latest hardware (DX12).
Just get 10.

DX12. Who cares I still can play about everything out there. And there's still not enough DX12 games yet!

This gaming mode concept for 10 has potentially raised my interest. I'm still content and in no hurry on 7 64 Pro for now.

its a great concept that will absolutely be ruined by what MS envisions "gaming mode" needs. Undoubtedly UWP will be required, which will be the first and only nail needed to kill it.

I can see it closing down "unnecessary" apps for the smoothest experience.
Why it would need to do anything when it is supposed to already be the smoothest experience seems odd.
Either it is bunkum in the first place or this is going to do something unpleasant. Probably both.
I bet it closes apps protecting your PC from MS. Next time you boot you get the full wrath.
Enjoy.

There is no concept. Someone found a file called gamemode.dll in a folder in a future alpha build, that's literally it -- endless speculation and techblog musings over a DLL.

Hell, I'd settle for ONE game where DX12 makes a pinch of difference over DX11 mode in terms of graphical fidelity or better FPS or anything really. ONE game.

So far DX12 is nothing more than a marketing bulletpoint - all the promised "latest/greatest gaming improvements" have not materialized in the slightest if you look at the benchmarks.

Even if it comes to fruition, bets on whether it will be restricted to games bought from the Win 10 store?

Imho ? 10. There's no real reason to hold onto 7 if you don't have to.

Win 10 + Start10 + a Metrics disabler = a very fast, efficient, reliable setup.
