id go 10 for the drivers and dx 12 future games and such all new video cards will slowly make dx 12 stuff. Make sure you do the CUSTOM Install and turn all the junk OFF in 10 also. Happy Gaming

Windows 8.1 + StartIsBack

Best of both worlds. No telemetry/spying bullshit, forced updates or forced Cortana that can't be legit disabled, but the major kernel improvements that carried forward into Windows 10. You can't go wrong.

DX12 is a bust and won't be relevant for years.

I had Windows 10 on my laptop and it drove me crazy. I got all kinds of weird stuff happening, like the OS updating itself (because, of course, you have no choice when that happens) and some of my programs disappearing. <shakes head>

I just got Windows 7 installed and I'm so much happier. It will be a while before DX12 makes it worth it. There aren't enough games optimized for it yet.

I will always pick 7 over 10.

for gaming, unless you care about too much stupid bullshit there's no single reason to go with anything else different than Windows10. I've been using constantly different windows versions from Vista up to Windows 10 and I can't find any reason to go back to windows 7 as a gaming platform, Win10 have much better gaming stability and a smoother gaming experience.. games that used to stutter or have a choppy experience under Win7 have way better performance on Win10. so if you are gona care about only gaming go with Win10.

Coming from a guy that went from Vista straight to Win10.
(Besides working on the neighbors computer from time to time that runs Win8)
Win10 is just fine. As Jmilcher said, once it's setup, I have never been annoyed. The start menu/whatever tile shit you call it still aggravates me though.

We all know the arguments against Windows 10 and different folks have their experiences and opinions on it all and it's well documented. Bottom line, to get support for everything coming to PC going forward, Windows 10 is the only option. Period. Two really great games came out on the Windows Store only running DX 12 only, Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4. There will be so more coming, some AR/VR experiences will be 10 only and at this point with close to half of all gamers running 10 according to Steam's Hardware Survey, well above second place Windows 7, 10 is going to become increasingly the focus of support and development.

I've been running 10 on this sig rig, which is clearly about gaming, and it's been pretty damned great. Really the only issues are Surround and SLI particularly in combination, which isn't a Windows 10 problem. Experiences and mileage will always vary but from my personal stand point, I've been more than pleased with 10 and gaming support, from old to the latest and greatest. Installed the original Max Payne a couple weeks ago, just needed a sound patch that's been needed since Vista and it runs great. And after having plucked down all the cash I have on this rig plus an HTC Vive and a 4k monitor, I'm just not mixing all of that new stuff with 7 or even 8.x.

If you need DX12 then 10 is your only choice, I'd probably go 8.1 if I didn't already have 7 setup the way I want (no explorer.exe running here, so the tiled shell doesn't matter to me).

I tried 10 out about a year ago, from what I've seen DX12 still doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Windows 7, absolutely no question.
Unless you have desperate need for a Windows 10 feature, stick with 7.
You can control what happens on Win 7. With Windows 10, Microsoft owns you and your PC.
It even looks horrible.

I cannot stand Windows 10.
I've tried it many times and it is a royal pita. Everyone I know says the same.
The one friend who converted to Windows 10 doesnt say much now, he's not so happy.

Windows 10.. All the buzzwords and dramatics glass ceiling rock throwers surrounding it are just that. It's a damn fine OS once configured to your liking.

Remember this.. When Windows first XP came out.. It got the same bullshit hatred because it was different. No really. XP was the evil step child of OS when first released. People despised it because it was different and cool to hate it.

rofl its not a bust.. You realize games take 3 to 4 years development time right? And you clearly don't know gaming if you think games built on DX11 that tack on DX12 are Full DX12 games.

Windows 10 is a great OS.

You remind me of a die hard that has a death grip on his Windows XP machine. Get with the times and let it go man.

And you must not know anyone from this thread. Because you are the one dissenter so far. And for [H] to have a thread with this many replies and only one person complaining... that says something.

Gotta agree. Upgraded using the downloaded free version of Windows 10 and have had zero problems with a wide variety of games.

I've always been rather puzzled by people's reactions to new Windows iterations strictly from a gaming usability stand point.

Let's focus on the complaints about UI changes with each iteration, or how about specifically with the "start menu" changes. It might just be how I run games but I'll be honest I never even use the start menu. Especially if you think about it nowadays for the majority you are accessing your games from some third party launcher/application (eg. Steam).

On my main machine if all I do is game that day I won't even access the start menu at all. I'd launch the game through Steam or Battle.net (well just Overwatch). Whether that is on Win 7, 8, or 10 that action is functionally the exact same.

In terms of a gaming and general usage scenario (eg. browsing, media, etc.) I don't even see what the major usability differences are or would be from a UI stand point.

Windows XP. Super-simple interface, no annoying updates (they don't update it anymore!) or security features, full hardware support for audio cards, DirectX 9.

Windows 7 , for me as a gamer... , Dx 12 minor impact so far on games.

I have a copy of win 10, but it takes so much maintenance to keep the way I
like, it's not worth my time . Maybe I'll switch in a year or so to win 10..

And this kind of thing probably is why there are varying opinions on this issue. Windows 10 requires no more maintenance than Windows 7. Since I use Cortana, Windows Store, OneDrive, etc. I don't have to any above and beyond accepting Windows updates and deal with driver and app updates as has always been the case. One my personal systems I've always accepted all updates even prior to Windows 10.

Been running Windows 10 since it was released in July 2015, I like it just fine and have not had any problems. I'll admit that my usage is pretty much just gaming and light internet browsing so perhaps if I did more with my machine and ran into software compatibility issues I might sing a different tune.

I like the start menu well enough, right clicking the start button gives access to plenty of good stuff, I find it very easy to navigate.

For gaming windows 10

If you are just using windows as a lunch platform for you browser or game there is not much difference.
But if you use windows for a lot file level work. windows 10 is a true hassle and you should go win7. Still many issues with paths in Windows 10. but you want notice that if you are a regular windows user.

I do a ton of different things on different devices on 10. Visual Studio, MS Office, Acrobat, Eclipse, latest games, no different overall than 7 when using applications.

Yeah. The straw that broke the camel's back for me with Windows 10 was when I wanted to delete a directory (deleting a mod for ARK). I didn't have permission. As administrator I didn't have permission. I looked at permissions, and it looked like I had permission, but it wouldn't let me delete. I've never run into anything like that with Win7.

yeah that is some of the issues I'm having i do a lot of hex editing .exe files or exchanging resources inside files but windows 10 is constantly annoying me with security questions.
and stuff like using %temp% to get to your temp directory does not work. wind does take you to its defaults temp directory and not your current temp directory so its does not read the %temp% variable its just hard-coded it to its default path whatever you changed it or not.

I just bought my daughter a new laptop with a Kaby Lake i7 7500u and it will only run on Win10.

I read that going forward all new Intel processors and AMD's Zen will require Win10.

I've had that exact same issue with Win7, but never Win10.

When installed properly and setup, Windows 10 is excellent. But I won't lie, it takes work to make it usable.

What "work", out of curiosity? I've installed a bunch of Windows 10 loads and it doesn't take any more work than Windows 7 as far as I'm concerned. Takes less time in fact because Windows 7 updates take a goddamn eternity these days.

EDIT: On the thread question, I would say Windows 10. If/when DX12 ever comes into its own, you're going to want 10.

You can feel free to give out all kinds of personal information for free. I personally disable all telemetry and metrics software that I can. By default as anyone who had installed windows 10 will know, M$ just let's itself right into the front door of your house.

But hey if it's easy and simple, no need to check and see what it's doing.

Kind of depends on your definition of "usable", then. No one I know personally cares much about telemetry, so for them it's a non-issue. Websites and social media are constantly gathering info on everyone anyway, so unless you want to go "off the grid" and live in a Faraday cage, I don't think there's much hope of getting rid of all of it. *shrug*

Not saying your opinion is invalid, but this issue doesn't make Windows 10 unusable for a large percentage of people.

People often overlook the functionality tied to data sharing, it's not simply Microsoft or anyone else just "stealing" data. Data sharing is at the heart of mud of the power in mobile devices. Unless you were born and live all of your life in a cave you're sharing data with someone. Doctors, governments, insurance companies, banks, employers, etc.

Depends on your preferences as far as the UI goes.
However 10 unquestionably has the MS store exclusives. Not just trash, either. Games like Forza and Gears that are damn good examples of how to port console games.
There's also DX12 if that ever becomes worth a damn. It's always VERY important for the Dolphin emulator, so I suppose there's that right this instant.

I don't think 7 does anything better (IMO of course) and the whole "spying" thing is no different than what Apple and Google have been doing with phones for years anyway. Privacy, in general, is a myth.

Windows 10 and I wouldn't look back. Windows 7 had a good run, but for the next three years it will only receive security patches before it's phased out in 2020.
