Windows update can be stopped within W10 in 10 mins of your life and google. "Microsoft spying, omg", relax, it can spy you on whatever OS they want. You don't care much about google spying us, or Mozilla etc. just because you opened Chrome, they can say where you live, what PC you have, your IP adress, what do you want to buy for Xmass, what is your next computer upgrade and that you like porn alot. I meen, really

While i am not a fan of "future proofing" on the hardware side, having the latest in the OS it is more important.

True win 10 spies on you better then win 7! I like all these little programs that come out saying then they will shut off the spying. But Microsoft is smarter then you think. They hidden some things in there last updates. That are buried deep in that allow them to still spy on you.

You said 7 does everything better. 10 boots faster, has proper UEFI/Secure Boot support, is generally more efficient, and updates run better.

The SSD makes boot times too close. The rest is opinion/your needs.

Win 7 until DX12 becomes relevant. I have a Win 10 install only for playing Forza and Gears on PC.

Windows 10. as much as people complain its pretty freaking good. just do what you did for 7 & 8 and turn off user account control and all the telemetry (which you can do when you first install windows and you should be good.

This is pretty much a revamp of the same arguments that floated around for Windows XP vs Windows 7.

This will be the same argument when Windows 10 is replaced with Windows Fuck Yeah! in a few years.

Except not at all. Win7 showed real performance increases, real user stability improvements (whereas Win10 has arguably decreased stability, ), real PnP/Driver support improvements. Many command line operations were given user-friendly setup screens (networking particularly), there's the addition of media center (removed in Win10!), I'd speak on enterprise improvements but I'm not an IT guy. The only place where the argument is remotely similar is the UI and initial driver issues. And even the staunchest Win10 supporters still regularly tell people to get some form of UI replacement/fix software. Win 10's biggest "features" are a walled-garden store (carried from Win8, you know, the OS no one liked) and social media / voice recognition trash that is laden with data mining hooks.

Anyone can develop, deploy or sell universal Windows apps, they are not restricted to the Windows Store, it works just like Win32 apps on Windows x86/x64. Adobe for instance is now distributing Experience Design, a UWA currently in Beta, through it's own CC distribution system.

SSD makes my computer boot to windows in 5-10 sec, I have no need for secure boot and it actually causes more problems when trying to troubleshoot and use utilities, and updates seem to run fine for me on 7 and i have more control over them unlike 10. Win 10 offers me nothing new that Win 7 doesnt already do, and i get it without the stupid app store and metroUI.

I think his point is that you can't make blanket statements about what 10 brings to everyone. I certainly wouldn't want to use 7 on a 4k monitor and that in and of itself is a big reason for some folks.

To be fair, I wouldn't count updates running better something Win 10 improved on when you dont even have control over them and has been one of the major complaints with the OS, such as restarting in the middle of your work or game. But as i said, it offers nothing better for me, Win 7 is the perfect OS for gaming. DX 12 is a flop and so is the Windows store as it will always live in the shadows of Steam and Origin.

If these things cause one issues ok. Running 7 on a 4k certainly would cause me issues. As for DX 12 being a flop, it's not been out long enough. People act as though DX 11 games launched immediately after 7 launched, they didn't and often DX 9 would run games better. It's pretty much the same story with new DX versions every time. Hardware and software matures for a version then over time it matures for the next version.

I can't use 7 anymore, a number of my devices would have issues, like the sig rig and a 4k and Surface Book and I use Windows Store apps. So again, impossible to make blanket statements and certainly people how make them are missing the point of why many are using 10 and for a reason. Everything has it's own set of issues. 7's age is becoming a bigger one all of the time.

A simple fix to this window 7 vs window 10 debate is to just use linux.

Nothing simple about if you're using hardware and software not supported under Linux. That's still a huge problem.

If you want linux but with all the hardware compatability of MS, go Windows 10. It now supports Ubuntu and bash.

Why not use win 7 on a 4k monitor? I use 8.1 but have not tried 7 on it.

Oh god, DON'T turn off UAC. Unless you're running in an account without admin privileges and only "right-click run as" on apps that need it. Bad adds happen. UAC helps... a little.

As far as this Win7 vs Win10 debate - LOL. "Win98SE forever, WinXP blows." To be fair, WinXP at launch did blow, but Win10 is in no where near the same state. It's fine. Really. Unless you have apps with known compatibility issues, upgrade. Are some things in different spots or deprecated? Yup. Does it matter? Nope. New build, new install, new OS. Then beat it into submission as you rightly should.

But then I'm supporting stuff as far back as DOS 6.0 (old sheet metal punch press) up to the latest Win10 fast ring. (And OS X, and iOS, and IOS... RHEL, Debian... There's even a little BSD in there for personal use...)

It's just an operating system, as long as it does what you need it to, and you can make it not do what you don't want it to, it doesn't fucking matter. It's the thing that has icons that I click to get into the shit I really want to use.

Scaling is much better in 10 than 7 and it's something that Microsoft is improving in the incremental releases as high resolution monitors become more and more common. Of course a lot of those issues are app related.

If you know not to screw around on your gaming computer and have a really good backup then turn off UAC or put it on low.

With the windows store, MS has not been able to demonstrate any added value or benefit to gamers, or any real reason for existing. Gamers just aren't waiting for a Microsoft controlled ecosystem on pc with console-like limitations, policies and insane digital prices.

And then there's the fact that the store requires developers take perfectly good Win32 game files, obfuscate them with the UWA wrapper, and effectively make them off limits to gamers. No modding, no texture replacements, no ini file tweaks, no third party launchers or any other manual manipulation of the files. Just a big middle finger.

The marketing line for UWA is that a developer can "code once" and have a game run on PC or Xbox. But as developers have noted, Xbox One and PC are still different enough to require separate codepaths, requiring two different versions of the game anyway. So when we peel away the marketing layer, UWA is nothing more than a clever trojan for MS to create store lockin and control. There's no upside for gamers.

Lastly, after the GFWL debacle, who really wants to trust MS with a digital game license again, especially with the windows store floundering, its future uncertain, and Microsoft's penchant for abandoning projects that don't take off or aren't gaining traction?

Repeating yourself doesn't make it any less of a bad idea. Why cut out a big chunk of post XP security?

Good backups don't help when you'd rather just be playing games instead of doing a network restore. It's better to take a few precautions to limit your risk than to be able to fix it when it fucks up.

The account I log in with 99% of the time is a standard user, not an admin. I have to type in my admin credentials for every prompt. If I saw enough to have to do that more than a couple times a month, I'd do something different. I almost never see one. You shouldn't either; even on default settings.

I recall awhile back there were some things that didn't play well with UAC, but is there any real reason to disable it nowadays? I haven't had a problem with it in...well, ever with Windows 10.

Some of the new games only run on 10. Is that because of DX12?

Malware and viruses have been laughing at UAC for years as they happily worked around and installed themselves anyway. As the saying goes "locks only keep the honest out".

But that's not to dismiss all elevated privileging - on Linux it actually does something.

Even with UAC, the default user on Windows is an admin, in something of a sandbox. It's MUCH harder to attack a Windows system if the user is a standard user. Sure it's still possible but much harder.

The principle is about the same on both OSes if you're really not running as an admin on Windows.

The way I always figured it was: if you get on my user account and delete my docs/etc then I'm fucked (well not really I have multiple backups).
What do I care if you screw up my windows install (heaven forbid a reinstall)?

Windows 7 vs Windows 10 is kinda like CRT versus LCD displays.

Sure modern LCDs give you higher resolutions, but the colours are inferior, only one resolution is native, refreshrates are generally lower, thinness is pointless when you're actually using it, etc.

1 step forward and 29 more sideways!
