Doom 4 E3 reveal.

Sadly the younger generation has zero clue of what the classic Doom series is, or was. Doom 1 and 2 were all time PC Gaming classics, just amazing games for their day, back in the 90's. And played on a PC, the only way to play a first person shooter, you don't play a shooter on console  consoles are only good for Super Mario Bro's type games only. So yeah, the kids today don't really know or appreciate Doom.

Plus it's a different time, back when Doom 1 & 2 were released, the shooter genre was still new and exciting and growing, today 20+ years later, it feels a bit stale and "been there, done that" feel now. Yeah the graphics are obviously better today, and can be played on 40" 4k monitors, with 5.1 surround sound setups, but still the overall gameplay itself of walking down a corridor and shooting monsters, really hasn't changed all that much, over the past two decades.

I disagree. I don't believe platforms should define a gamer. I play consoles and PC because I enjoy games not because I am some elitist or console kiddie.

This is only true if you're an idiot, have done zero research, have no idea what you're getting into.
I really wish you wouldn't been there to help Kyle out back in the day... last I heard he's still crying about wanting his money back... :p

...not to mention all those who pre-ordered Aliens: Colonial Marines, and other horribly over-hyped-poorly-released games... lol, only an "idiot" doesn't posses clairvoyance, right?

Call me old school, I just think the Keyboard + Mouse is only meant for shooter type games like Doom, Battlefield, Unreal Tournament, etc... Whereas great games like Zelda and Super Mario Bros. are totally meant and designed best to work on consoles. I love Mario Bros. would never want to play it on a PC, and I am dying for the next Zelda game on the next gen Nintendo system, should be amazing. But I think shooters are just meant PC's.

And Call of Duty, LOL that piece of crap doesn't even count, it's meant for the arcade at your local Chuck E. Cheese, and that's it. Or that other garbage game Gears of War, what a pile of poo, and it's not even a real shooter anyways, some weird third person over the shoulder view, designed for gamepad controllers YUCK.

I agree with you on the whole but regarding A:CM, Randy Pitchford is a piece of shit and straight up lied to everyone, while also putting out fake "gameplay" footage that was never representative of the game. Different situation there.

I understand what you're saying. I played this Doom open beta, it does feel more like the old Doom and old Id. I meant this current generation of gamers are different, they didn't mostly grow up with the Doom's, it's COD that is currently mainstream. look at the sales numbers.

Gotcha. I do agree with that completely. Sorry if I misread your post. That's why it would be difficult for them to make a straight Quake style Arena shooter now. All these kids won't buy it, because it's not those new games. You add too many new-style features or "features" then you alienate the get-off-my-lawn crowd. I think id mixed and matched with the new Doom pretty well though, and it looks like they could make a decent chunk of both sides happy. I know it looks spot-on to me.

I agree for the most part. However, I'll play with the tools I have in the given area of the house I want to play in. I'm not strict about genre either. Sure, I prefer M+KB with shooters (at least first person) and yes, gamepads are better for platform or third person types. I'll play anything with anything though, I just don't expect to be as good at an FPS with a pad, or a platform game with the mouse. Not a huge deal either way, but I definitely prefer the "proper" device for the game.

It all comes down to parents. :D I play all kinds of classic games with my kids. We play Lucas Arts and Sierra adventure games, all my old favorite shooters. 16-bit era RPGs and action games, DOS Games, C64 games, and everything in between. Thing is, if the parents weren't gamers (or other close friends and family of some of the classic eras) then the kids aren't going to naturally do this on their own.

I have a feeling the new Doom is going to bring in people from a lot of different gaming backgrounds though. Maybe it will even get some people to go back and revisit the classics.

Also, Wolfenstein seems to have done very well in the modern era as a single player only action shooter with old style mechanics. I've heard people praise it whether they're younger/newer players or people that might have played the original DOS game. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I was actually thinking that Machine Games should make a new Quake game on this new Doom (Tech 6) engine. They'd be able to nail the single player and story elements. Then maybe get id-proper to do the Arena / MP stuff.

In this case, it's Doom, it looks fucking incredible, I've never not enjoyed an id game (even the ones other people whine about) and they fucking deserve my money. There is absolutely no way they're going to blow this, at least where I'm concerned. So, mission accomplished for me.

how on earth can you be so sure the game is going to be so jaw dropping and amazing?...you don't...there's barely been any single player footage shown...sounds like you're just an id fanboy who will blind buy the game out of pure hope and nostalgia versus any objective reviews...I'm sure no matter how many potential negative reviews come out you will find a way to downplay them...I enjoyed Doom 3 and thought Rage was a bit under-rated but nothing about Doom 4 looks all that amazing to me...there'd nowhere near the level of excitement as previous Doom games...remember when Doom 3 came out almost alongside Half Life 2?...the hype was real back then...nothing wrong with liking this new Doom game but good lord try and be a little objective about it

I like Gearbox (say what you want about Randy or whatever, but Borderlands is an absolute classic.) However, I saw A:CM coming from a mile away. I was excited for the longest time for that game, but toward the end of development, it looked like a train-wreck was about to occur. It didn't take clairvoyance to know this game was going to bomb. I didn't buy it. If you did, then you weren't paying attention, and didn't read up on it. I was also being a bit saucy when I said idiot. Still though, I have around 300 games in my Steam library, and I'd say maybe 5 of them aren't all that great. Out of those 5 maybe 4 of them came bundled with something. That remaining one might be one that I bought, and decided I didn't like it. It's really not that hard to find out how a game is shaping up before release.

And on the subject of RAGE... Well, I understand people getting pissy when it didn't work on their hardware. That was bad on id. However, the game itself is actually very good, (I love it.) Other people don't. Whatever, but once they fixed the hardware issues, it's not like it wasn't the game that everyone knew was coming.

How can I be so sure? Because out of every game id has ever released, whether other people had their complaints or not, I enjoyed the living bejezuz out of it. They have never let me down. So, in my particular case, their track record is pretty fucking good. I also enjoyed the little open demo for MP. It wasn't bad, and I can see it being a TON of fun with the complete version.

I've seen several single player videos now all with different content, and it LOOKS FUN TO ME. I mean seriously!! What's so difficult to understand about it. It's a fucking Doom game. You point a gun, you shoot at a Demon. You collect weapons and health. You fight your way through an science and industrial complex on the moon or Mars, and that is fucking it!! There's nothing else to it. It doesn't hurt that in the context of Doom the graphics look gorgeous. I mean it could have basically zero story, and require colored key-passes, or it could be slow paced, more story and log-driven like Doom 3 and I would love it either way. They really can't go wrong here in my mind. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm just a plain old fan of their work. I've seen nothing that tells me I will be disappointed.

If you don't like Doom, then fine. I'm not faulting your opinion. However, this looks precisely like Doom. The tiny snippet of MP was fun for me. They've shown that the PC version has a lot to like. The last video even appeared to be played with a mouse and keyboard, and seemed to respond very snappily. If you do like Doom, then I don't see what's not to like? Maybe it's just not your thing, or maybe your tastes have changed from the previous ones. If you're just talking visuals, I think they look amazing. There is something about their games where the visual impact is more than the sum of its parts. I've always thought this. Sure one game or engine might have one feature that's better. Another one might be better with some other aspect. But taken as a whole, id's games have always immersed me, and just piqued my interest and imagination more than the Unreals of the world. (and I'm also an Unreal fan) Everything just seems bigger, more over the top, the machinery looks more like machinery, there are intricate details, and moving effects, and interesting lighting design. It all gels into something that just looks better to me. Even than something like the Cry Engine which pushes the boundaries of game realism IMO. They still don't quite give me the same feeling when I look at them. Obviously not everyone (or even most people) agree with me on these things, and tastes between gamer X and gamer Y vary. This game appears to have that bit of id magic that I enjoy.

Are there other games that I rate higher than id games? Yes, there are a few. The System Shock games for example. However, they're in such a different bracket. They're really not even the same genre other than being first person games with guns. (though Doom 3 started pushing into their territory) Anyway...

As you can see my expectations are pretty high, but I still don't think they're going to disappoint me. Let's call it a REALLY REALLY safe bet that I will like it. Hence the pre-order. I don't always pre-order, but when I do... yada yada.. I have a good feeling about the game... yadda yaaaaada....

I don't know how much more clear it could be that it will be a good example of a Doom game.

I think people WANT it to fail which is just stupid. (I don't mean you specifically...)

Heh np. I would LOVE a new Quake. That'll complete me, allow me to transition to old age perfectly lol. I heard last time Id was floating around an idea to go back to the original first universe. That would be incredible on the Tech 6 engine no doubt after seeing doom. I think it's gonna happen in 2017 or 2018 in the latest, would certainly be a good 20 year anniversary present for Quake.

That would do the same for me. :D I really like where they went with the Strogg Story, but I'm glad they wrapped it up too. I would love to see more from the first. I really want the story to revolve around the slip gates, and the various places they can take one to. Q3A kind of mixed those environments, and did it in a pretty good way. Q1 one had the edge on atmosphere though. Working all of this together, with a good Machine Games story mode, and id Q3A multiplayer would be lovely.

Nah, I think they've just become cynical due to some previous games not living up to their perceived hype. I think part of this is that we've perhaps become too picky with elevated expectations. All too often a game will come out and even if it's not a 9/10...let's say it's a 7/10 or 8/10 that's still really enjoyable, people will pick it apart. There is also the fact that we've gotten used to NOT paying $60 for games. Deep Steam discounts (and grey market key sites) have spoiled us. Again, this has made us feel somewhat privileged with heavy expectations. You know, a "THEY HAVE THE BALLS TO ASK $59.99 FOR THIS GAME, IT HAD BETTER BE FVCKING PERFECT" kinda thing.

It is clear that you are one of the most vocal id apologists/enthusiasts on this forum, but you know what? I can get down with that. I absolutely loved id games back in the day. Heck, I loved Doom 3 and really enjoyed Rage as well. So I get where you're coming from. This new Doom game could be less than perfect and chances are, I'll still enjoy the hell (no pun intended) out of it. It's like that Wolfenstein 2009 game, which unfortunately, I never got a chance to play (I would LOVE to find one of the coveted Steam keys for it). I remember people expecting it to compare it to the fantastically excellent Return to Castle Wolfenstein that came before it, and many were disappointed. But I guarantee you that I would enjoy it. Would it be my favorite game ever? Well no, probably not, but that doesn't make it a bad game.

So yeah, it's a little annoying that some people don't have more optimism but like I said, I think that stems from 1) being spoiled in the modern age and 2) being burned in the past. I understand your affection for id games and I also understand polo's hesitation and reservations when it comes to automatically assuming that the game will be aces. So, neither of you are wrong.

Yeah, as vocal as I am, (because I really like their games :D ) I do understand where some people are coming from. I typically do have odd-man-out perspective on things. I just like to voice where I'm coming from. I'm also totally fine with people who just plain aren't into something I'm into. No big deal. I just see a lot of stuff with this game that screams at me "you're going to love this" so I get excited. Anyway, I guess we'll know in a couple of days. :D

Pre load is 53 gigs going to put in on a HDD if that is the case maybe I can transfer the file with my new Build a month from now.

Yikes, I still haven't gotten my key! I'm hoping it arrives today so I can start the pre-load.

Nevermind! Just got it!! WOOT!!!

thanks for the tip, cdkeys was g2g and got my key and im preloading now. great price for the game, even if you're someone like me who's really only interested in the campaign. full retail for 10-12 hours is pretty meh.

Seems like so many of the areas are well lit. There were a lot of places in the original Doom that were either pitch black or very dark.

Agreed, I just can't get over the lighting in this new one. Hopefully their will be plenty of Reshade mods that come out for it to tone it down a bit.

LMAO, after all of the complaints that Doom 3 was far too dark to the point that you couldn't see (those people didn't realize that that was the point, hence the flashlight/weapon balance for tension).

If those same people now start complaining that this game is too well lit then I'm gong to smh...

there is a brightness setting if you want it pitch black again

It's just like Goldilocks and the porridge. This Doom is too dark! This Doom is too bright! Ahhhh, this Doom is just right.

I'm preloaded and ready to go.

Few 4k pics running on my pc. Advanced options has cinematic and gritty filters as well, think i had cinematic enabled.

Looks freaking sweet to me...as long as it plays nice it'll be worth a buy. I'm interested in hearing more about how the controls feel, how the weapons sound, and how the environments feel.

Looks incredible. I'm preloaded, just need it to unlock. If only I could find the blue key! Damnit!

Weapons so far feel nice and the sound for them is good, you get the chainsaw pretty early on and its really satisfying to use (i think you chose a direction with the chainsaw which determines what way to cut, not 100% sure on this but i think an arrow of some type showed as i started to kill an imp with it). I'm getting around 40ish fps ingame but it feels faster than that probably due to the speed of the game. The glory kills are very fluid with the movement animation and don't really feel out of place at all. Simpler ones on the zombie type enemies are really fast, the ones on imps and upwards are a bit more elaborate, 1 glory kill i got on an imp was slamming its head into a wall which then exploded in a nice shower of blood and chunks, proximity to walls and where you look i think determines what kind of animation is activated.
