Galaxy Note 4

I just joined the Note 4 family. T-Mo order placed. The disappointing Nexus 6 reviews chased me away. I hope I can root the 4 and install a stock Android ROM or something like Cyanogen. TouchWiz still irks me.

Before my G3 I had a Note 2 for almost 2 years and it was probably my favorite phone ever in retrospect. Lately I've been seduced by the lure of the hot new girls (ie, droid turbo and Nexus 6) but after the bloom coming off the rose on both of those phones, I think I may just end up getting a Note 4.

It may not be the sexiest pick, but when it comes right down to it despite all the TW hate, the Note 4 does screen quality, camera and battery just as well if not better than anyone else. Throw in that the Note 4's build quality has come a long ways, then it basically seals the deal.

Hope you like it Durden.

I'm a huge fan of my note 4. I've seen a lot of complaints about TouchWiz but I'm pretty happy with the experience I'm having. The multi taskin window could be quicker though. I haven't had any of the crazy slow downs or lag that has been reported or demonstrated.

As an owner of a note 2,3 and now 4 it's a worthy upgrade. Obviously more worthwhile from 2 to 4 but it's still a reasonable improvement over the note 3. The camera is a significant improvement, nicer build and screen, lots of little tweaks.

I'm very happy with my Note 4 as well but you're right about the window button lagging a bit. I constantly have Pandora, Skype, Evernote, and Chrome open (usually with a few tabs) and TouchWiz does tend to lag a little. That being said, I had a stock galaxy s4 before this phone and an iPhone before that so I'm used to it being a bit laggy. Ignorance is bliss. :p

Yeah Nexus 6 turned out to be a huge disappointment.

Most people will buy either the iPhone 6 or the Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy Note 4 is selling much better than the Galaxy Note 3 did when it was released.

Samsung made the right decision to go with metal.

Who else has put a tempered glass screen protector on?

What case are you running? I had a friend trade me a new OB Defender case for my N4 for my old N2 OB Defender case. I have a Caseology bumper case on order, and glass screen protector. I think I am going to try that before I stick it in the OB, and if I would I might cut the plastic screen off.

This is what I have on order.

the otterboxes are b-u-l-k-y - i'd rather just use a phone naked.

I have a BodyGuardz glass shield on my 5s along with a Body Glove DropSuit case. I plan on using the same items on my new Note 4 after it's delivered, next week.

8H hardness is not very good for a screen protector.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MDEIZRG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I picked up this protector, and it feels really good. Its half the thickness of others with the same scratch protection. From what I have read, the edges of the N4 are curved, so this causes a rainbow effect. I don't find it all that noticeable, but I think have a thinner one really helps.

The first one I posted comes with a white or black border to eliminate the rainbow effect. Just depends on when they will make it.
They released the iPhone version a month after launch.

Screw screek protectors and cases. I don't want to cover up my phone, make it less comfortable to use or more bulky.

I've rocked a note 2, 3 and now 4 without cases and screen protectors. They all look pretty close to mint.

Samsung made the right decision to go with metal.

the note 4 is a great phone... but people are putting way too much into the half-ass use of metal on the device that appears to be almost an afterthought - it is a plastic phone with two tiny itty bitty strips of metal along the sides.

True but beggars cannot be choosers I guess. This is the first time in awhile so everyones going ape.

The whole frame is metal. I have one.

I don't care about the metal one bit at all, but it was apparently a big deal to the build quality Nazis. And all the reviews seem to have been impressed with it, so if it works why not? The real question would be did including the metal significantly harm the phone? Doesn't appear it did.

Lol it sounds like you've never even held a Note 4.

Any objective person who has ever held a Note 4 would tell you that the build is 100% premium. The metal sides and the tighter leatherette back with no stitching feels as premium as the aluminum iPhone 6.

Personally the iPhone 6 Plus is way too big for the screen size. Apple clearly didn't pay attention to bezel:screen ratio.

Even Marques Brownlee says that the Note 4 feels metal and premium:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoQKLOrAU4E&list=UUBJycsmduvYEL83R_U4JriQ

The Galaxy Note 4 actually feels better in the hand compared to the iPhone 6 Plus according to Austin Evans, Marques Brownlee and some other reviewers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EsFNU6Kj3Y&list=UUXGgrKt94gR6lmN4aN3mYTg

This is because the Galaxy Note 4 has angular edges whereas the iPhone 6 Plus is more rounded.

lol i actually owned one and in some respects (camera) wish i still did. i never said it didn't "feel premium". are you a bit conflicted that you purchased a note instead of the iphone and attempting to convince yourself you made the right move? i won't tell you what your post [really] sounds like though...

Man, the Nexus 6 reviews are disappointing. It's like the same old Nexus where the processor works well and everything else is crappy. Camera sucks, battery sucks, but it's fast and will be updated fast... Before the price makes the point moot, but this time around for phablet lovers... If you're on verizon, get the Turbo. If not, yeah, Note 4 it is.

Of the major 2014 phones, I've tried...

HTC M8 Windows: Great hardware, but OS not there, yet. I might give it another try.
iPhone 6: Meh, just a taller, wider, thinner 5s.
Moto X: Loved it, except the poor battery and only 16GB storage.
Droid Turbo: Liked it, but the low speaker/call volume, inconsistent WiFi and BT, dim screen all led me to return it.
Nexus 6: Reviews chased me away.

I've got a Note 4 (T-Mo) to be delivered on Monday. I liked it in the store. Hope I like it more by the end of the week.

I haven't seen a Nexus 6 in person, but I haven't seen overly negative reviews either that would chase me away. It doesn't seem to be a top of the line phone, but not a bad phone.

The thing is the Nexus 6 has the same problem that had almost always plagued every nexus device, but the Nexus 4 and 5 are half the price, so it's okay. Right now, it's practically the same price with the same plaguing issues. So, no, it's not a bad phone, but it's a tough sell even for me and I love pure google and hate TouchWiz. It's really disappointing. If I were in the market for a phablet, I'll be getting a Note 4 or a Droid Turbo. If I were getting a phone now, it's either going to be the new Moto X, another HTC One, or the OnePlus One. Had Google sold the phone even at $450 for the 32GB version and $500 for 64GB, I could still recommend it. But I'll be recommending the Note 4 along with the Turbo for phablet at this current price point. Oh, well, 64bit + new instruction set coming next year will blow everything away anyways.

wait i thought droid turbo was like 5.2 inch phone
i don't think that falls under phablet category

People are not going to be happy spending $650+ on a not bad phone.

Right? I want to love the phone but there are some big draw backs. I want to trade in my note 3 for the 4 but I don't think the difference in cost is worth it.

I am loving my battery life so far.

Unlocked international inter carrier phones have almost always cost $650 or more. The last few Nexus devices and OPO aside, they all have.
You missed the point. $650+ for a top notch, unlocked phone is to be expected. $650+ for a phone with the problems of the Nexus 6 is an insult.

You're welcome to feel insulted at anything.

But carrier unlocked phones, aside from OPO and Nexus 4/5 (which are singular oddities TBH), have always and forever been priced $700+...whether the rest of us felt annoyance and indignation at that practice or not. Hell, the Note 4 carrier-unlocked sells for $800+USD (Price on Amazon, MSRP $1,029USD) and to boot doesn't have as near as much cellular radio connectivity. So no "$650 for a top notch carrier unlocked phone is to be expected", no it isn't-that bar $1000USD currently if you're basing "top notch" on the Note 4.

I'll try once more.

Paying high prices for top of the line, carrier unlocked phones is and always has been the norm. I've paid as much as $850 for such phones. My iPhone 5s, for example. The N6 is marketed as such a phone, yet reviews and customer experiences indicate it falls far short of being one. Still, the N6 is priced as an expensive, top of the line phone. Therefore, I along with many others will not buy it.

Can't make it any more clear than that.

....you're not making it clear, you're confusing the issue

$650 ain't "high prices". Which was my point. The Nexus is not priced "as an expensive top of the line phone". It is priced like a normal unlocked multi-country phone, when not on steep-and-cheap sales. Remember $650 and $700 is MSRP from the source.

Would you pay $1,029 for a Note 4 (and at that that device wouldn't work on Verizon or Sprint)? Because if you want to compare price, compare apples-apples. And the normal price on Note 4 is $1,000+ which is the current benchmark for an "expensive top of the line phone". By your own admission, Note 4 is too damn expensive in an even worse example than the Nexus 6.

Note 4 is $750 at T-Mobile and a better phone than the N6 in every respect. I ordered one last Thursday. That goes back to my point about people being willing to pay a high price for a high quality phone.

Further communication with you is pointless.

To expand on this, the Note 4 is $699 direct from Samsung for a phone that has an unlocked bootloader and can be used on Verizon, ATT 3G, and Tmobile 3G / partial 4G. Sure it doesn't have quite the same flexibility in radio frequencies as the Nexus 6, but the Nexus 6 lacks functionality of the GN4 as well (stylus which I personally don't care about, removable battery, microsd card).

It is a trade off, and price isn't really one of the trade offs between the two phones.

Pretty much only 2 things holding me back from getting a Note 4 at this point (and I have the Note 3 currently):

1. Custom ROM support (TBD)
2. Notably worse headphone audio quality than the Note 3 (read the GSM Arena review).

I was hoping that Anandtech would do a "proper" review of the Note 4, but ever since Anand left, their reviews have been...lacking somewhat.

First time android owner in a long time, picked up the note 4...loving it so far, but on the outside of the android world, where's a good place to get back into things?

Can you do things with it like a jail broken iPhone?

I just got an s view case, all it needs I think, keeps the phone not feeling so big! Not sure if I will get a screen protector or not...the gorilla glass is nice!

I'm contemplating getting the Verizon Samsung Note 4 (can't afford the developer edition) off Amazon for $230 and using my old SIM card to attempt to keep my UDP however if it backfires T-Mobile will supposedly pay off my ETF and so I'll go with them and keep the Note 4 as well, unless I'm missing some information on how it works.

So, my question, does the Verizon Note 4 work on T-Mobile?

Thanks

^I Think Tmobile gives you the ETF with the phone trade in. Check the xda forums to see the specific band availability on the VZ N4.

EDIT. Turns out ETF is paid regardless of trade in so you get to keep the VZ phone. As long as the band 4 works your golden

afaik developer edition of verizon note 4 will work on at&t/t-mobile out of box, HOWEVER, you do not get LTE
