getting into bitcoining?

I'm glad that the value of the bitcoin was not severely affected by the shutdown of Silkroad. That just goes to show you that there are legitimate reasons to use bitcoins.

True, there was a dip in the value, but it quickly recovered and today, its at almost the same or worth just a tad more than it was prior to the bust.

I still wish I had a time machine to send myself a CD full of market data on BTC/LTC/NVC from the very beginning, even with my silly crossfire 6950's I could have made a few hundred grand easily by mining at the right time selling/rebuying/selling.

You might as well time machine yourself an ASIC :D

you and me both

also, remember, at launch a pair of 6950s was a formidable mining setup

The top R9 290/290x cards with the 512bit wide memory interfaces may come close to 1Mhs in Scrypt.

The other Rx cards are just rebadges of the 7 series so no difference there.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the best bang/buck is still the 7950.

ugh.. signature confirmation.. now i have to go to the post office to get my jalapeno.

I sure hope this is the case.. I'm heavily invested with these 7950s.

I am very impressed seeing them run .975 @ 950/1350 pulling 600khs.

All of the FM2 A6-5400k boxes with 4 7950s each are barely over 800w loaded per. Quite amazing.

woot.. my Jalapeno is happily minig at 5.6GH/s right now. the miner program estimates ~$2/day

The problem is that within a month, that $2/day turns into $0.75 a day. When the KNC's and CoinTerra boxes hit in Dec/Jan, you're talking about losing money running it. I had a 30Gh/sec little single and within a month it went from making $40/day to $15.

yea, i know =(

butterflylabs is still shipping very large boxes too

If i could just get (mostly) free electric... I'd clear $400 a month easily in pure profit.

I call it 'butt-hole Labs' cause all your money goes into a hole... a black hole :p

oh, I was looking at the prices too, didn't even think of that. Christ, $269.79 0_o

I tried Hashcow and Multipool.us and I'm just wondering how long does it usually take for the stats to show that my worker is active. I know I'm late into the game, but I have free electricity

A lot of bitcoins were seized from the silk road, more, i believe, than they even say. This hoarding of bitcoins is what caused the initial spike (they were taken off the market, so the supply/demand curve shifted), then, of course, it shot up further due to investors trying to jump on it to make money. There are a lot of former silk road sellers that will have to unload their coins as well, along with investors wanting to cash out, which creates the scenario for a crash, which occurred many times before.

It is always possible bitcoin will just keep growing; predicting any market or venture is really just a crap shoot in the end.

The thing i don't like about bitcoin is that it can be artificially inflated or deflated by one entity that has enough capital. A lot of people see bitcoin as a safe-haven from the world's corrupt fist system, but the truth is, bitcoin is no different. I would put more trust in fiat money than bitcoin, even though i despise it and the system it creates. A safe ling term investment would be commodities that are limited - oil, gold, etc.. Bitcoin attempts to emulate a limited commodity through "mining," such as one would mine for gold. The idea os very good, but, it is dangerous to trust the system due to its nature. This is not to say one can not profit from it. There were many times bitcoins were worth only a few dollars, and that is the only time i would invest some thousands of dollars in it, as the potential for massive returns is great.

I have never seriously looked into mining, but from the looks of it, it offers minimal profit.

Not that long. 15 minutes.

Hi all :) just stepping in and subbing to this thread.

I was like many and was going to get in to BTC mining a few years back and never did and regretted it ever since lol. this year I did like many and got in to it when it hit $212 a coin but even then it was too late so I moved on to other coins.

I just recently got in to it hot and heavy and have been turning a decent profit and plan on investing a bit more not too long from now. Been mining with hashfaster.com for LTC for a few days now since I got screwed over at pooledbits.com twice in two weeks so avoid them like the plague!

in the mean time if your looking to get setup mining LTC with an AMD card let me know and I'll see if I can help you out!

Just ordered 2 290's from amazon. This plus BF4 pushing my vram usage over 3GB has pushed me over. Time to sell my 780 Ti's haha.

It's crazy how much the prices on AMD cards have gone up lately. Managed to snag my 290's for 399.99, but that quickly went out of stock after I bought them, cheapest on amazon is now $440. Cheapest 280x is $346. And the best part? Cheapest 7970 is $348 (theres one used one for $300 though)

Can you burn your card if you leave it on all the time for mining purposes? I've been leaving mine (Sapphire Dual-X Boost 7950) for 2 weeks every night and I smelled something burnt inside my case yesterday. Can't really trace the smell, the video card appeared fine and still functional, but I don't think I will risk mining overnight anymore.

I was extra careful to undervolt and keep the temps at around 62 C max for core and 67-70 C max for VRM. These should be safe temps for 24/7, right?

if you are keeping your temps there you should be good. I have had one motherboard that ended up going bad it couldn't keep up with the power draw I guess. on another system I ended up having a diode go bad out of the blue that controlled part of the fan circuit.

Just keep a close eye on it. I'm just glad you were smart enough to keep an eye not just on the core voltage but the VRM temps too lol, too many people don't do this and don't have good airflow in their case and literally get burnt. Especially when you have two cards in one system! a lot of the time depending on the card forget about even having them in a case.

how much does memory bandwidth and memory size matter with litecoin mining?

the 7790 was one of the most efficient cards for mining bitcoins back when it came out, mainly because it provided nearly a 1000 shaders for less than 80W.

i picked up an Asus 7790 Direct CU II card for £80 when the 260X cards arrived (gone back up to ~£120 now sadly), but if i could get a couple more for a similar price would this form the basis of a decent mining rig for litecoins?

in short, is it purely a matter of shader x clock speed / price, or does memory matter...

Memory speed matters in LTC mining. You have to find a good mix of overclocking core and mem unlike BTC where you would underclock memory to min values to save power.

A 7790 will net you 200-230 khash overclock which isn't that great.

$4500 for a dedicated ASIC that can do 650G/H per hour. So you are too late my friend.
