Battlefield 4 Beta Discussion

i ran a couple of GTX460 Hawks in SLI for about a year. i loved the performance (back then) but the heat and noise of a multi-gpu setup is not something i feel like putting up with. that's assuming a single R9-290X won't be just as noisy or hot :p. if i get a 780 i'll get a non-ref card.

See I loved BC2 and I don't remember it being so abused, and in hardcore mode, you had a fighting chance.

In hardcore you can only spawn on the squad leader; the squad leader can spawn on anyone else. So it's a bit more controlled. Honestly though, as a hardcore player I don't like that restriction and think it cuts down on team play. Too often you're stuck with a shitty squad leader sniping 1 mile away, or who doesn't understand to spawn on a squadmate and keep a push going, or impatient squad mates who won't wait for the SL to spawn and then spawn on them.

I honestly think Battlefield Bad Company 2 was better than both BF3 and BF4. BF appears to be losing the things that make it unique, IMHO.

BC2 definitely had a certain "something" that BF3 failed to capture. The map design, the destruction really felt more central to the map and less gimmicky than in BF3 (i.e., blowing a hole in a house wall on defense to remove cover for the offense (rush)). Just the "scale" was better, using the helicopters in BC2 you could easily see the enemies and hit them; for some reason, even on a stable Blackhawk platform in BF3, hitting someone feels like hitting an ant with a spear.

I really really really feel like I just flushed 70 bucks straight down the toilet.

Played for about 5 hours and I have ZERO desire to play anymore... maybe its just because the map is probably the worst FPS map I have ever played.

EDIT: On the other hand it runs very smooth. Great FPS all settings maxed with a single 7970 @2560x1440.

Ah... yeah, the setup's hot, though not noisy, at least, for me. I definitely know where you're coming from, though! That eVGA deal is incredible... if you have a code I'd strongly consider jumping on that then in your shoes. Just my two cents, :).

EDIT awhile later: Read about a problem with mounting pressure on Zotac AMP! 670/680 cards, so I decided to install rubber washers on the 4 main pressure-mounting-spring screws on my cards. Was easy and now I was able to drop fan speeds 4% while also maintaining 6-7C lower sustained max temps looping valley. Not half bad :D, I had seen the mfg date on my cards was older stock so I figured I'd give it a try.

Definitely... I agree with you on everything in this post. In BC2, the destruction didn't feel tacked-on or mostly irrelevant, and the chopper gunning was way more engaging + accurate. That's been lost pretty much in BF3 and BF4, unfortunately.

I found the text in BF3 way too small at 2560 and much prefer the BF4 size. Though it's easily adjustable.

BF4 automatically accepted and supported my 110hz monitor overclock at 2560x1440. That was a pleasant surprise. With a single GTX 670 the game is playable at ultra everything and 2xMSAA at 2560x1440 but there are major lag spikes when zoomed in tank, heavy action and 64 player maps. Will buy another 670 or a R9 290X.

Using Nvidia 320.49 drivers. No stuttering like a lot of folks are complaining about. I have to say, my favorite thing about Windows 8 for gaming is the fact that I don't have Aeroglass crash every time I play Battlefield. I also don't get random low memory errors while playing the game and have 4+gbs of free memory available. Yes, Windows 8 looks like shit but for gaming it works great. The task manager is spectacular too.

We have very very similar setups and I don't get nearly as good performance as you do and I'm running at a lower resolution without any AA. I'm usually in the upper 40s with drops to mid 30s and some occasional and short drops to the teens.

The game hasn't released yet, you can still get a refund.

It's interesting how opinions vary so much not only in the genre of FPS' but even in the BF franchise alone. For example, I think BC2 was the worst BF ever made though I still think I had most fun with BF2, not so much because it was "better" but because I had my own server (my very own, not a rented one) and had a bunch of friends who I played with that also helped me moderate the server.

BC2 was better than BF3 because BF3 was a soulless turd. Even with better graphics, sound design and weapon models, the game wasn't as good as BC2.

I'm the same way. I hate the gun physics I'm BC2. I would put a whole mag into as guy and he would still be alive. NOT a problem in BF3 or this beta.

3770k @ 4.5ghz
680gtx 2gb @ 1253/6416
8gigs ram

1920x1200, 4x MSAA, 90 deg. FOV, settings ultra.

Cpu usage looks like its around 50-60% across all cores with one at 80%.
1950mb of vram used
5gb ram used

Fps ranges between 30 and 70. 30 when the building collapses or if I'm inside an explosion. 70 when I'm running around outside of the action. When things start heating up I average around 55 and when there is a lot of smoke plumes I drop to around 45.

I wish i had 10 more fps at these settings.

I think 780gtx level performance is probably the sweet spot fps wise for this game with the settings I have it set to.

AMD beta drivers (13.10 Beta2) made an enormous difference in performance for me. i'm now running ultra settings @ 1080p and 2xMSAA very comfortably with 60+ fps 90% of the time.

The game feels like it has a lot of optimizations left in it. I wouldn't doubt you'll gain those 10fps once the game is updated and/or newer drivers are released. Right now I feel like we are brute forcing the game to be playable with our i7's and powerful GPU's. Funny thing is this has the side effect of making me quite competitive in the game. We're exceptions in this forum, but most people are playing with hardware that is far less powerful, which I think is giving people with more powerful machines a much bigger advantage than it would otherwise.

Just got around to playing games again....took a good 6 month break so my reflexes are pretty rusty. So far my initial impressions of the beta is that its definitely a beta lol but also the graphics seem...soft...with lots of lensing effects...which is annoying but they existed in BF3 so it's just a continuation of that art style (regardless of how much we dislike it). Running a pair of 7950s, I get a pretty decent FPS of around low-mid 50s consistently. I have a feeling that full retail will require a third one to maintain 60+ on all the maps.

So other than those thoughts...what else have I missed...I haven't kept up on the news or anything like that.

"Lensing effect" as in DOF when you scope a weapon? You can disable that.

In any case I'm having a blast in the beta. And the people I tend to play with are as well. I get the feeling all the people that (aren't) having glaring issues aren't necessarily flocking to the forums to talk about it like the people with bad experiences. One man's opinion.

im having trouble downloading gets to 99% and gives a unexpected error.:confused:

Never mind closed down orgin and open it back up and download completed this time. will play tonight

Wow, I took the SLI profile from 331.40, which for some reason is TDR'ing on me repeatedly, and put it in with nvidia inspector to 327.23 which works fine for me, and my framerate+gpu usage are even better now. Kinda surprised me, but it's very consistent.

Now if only I could figure out why I'm getting the TDR issues... I gather SLI isn't playing nice with 331.40 if you don't have the legacy ROM enabled from your BIOS for boot, but I don't use the UEFI boot and my MSI Z68A-GD65 G3 has nothing else I can find to adjust to attempt to fix it with the method the driver release notes say to. First time I've had any issues in a long time...

I'll log a match to compare to not having the profile... I already had done it without so I'll just need to do it with now, then post up the graph + settings screen. That's the morning's project... for now, sleep ;).

Played a few rounds hooking my mic up.

In game VOIP made it a must buy imo. If I can keep consistently finding pub squads I can have fun with then this game will last a whole lot longer than BF3 did.

Game runs really smooth and is using all 4 cores. Random spikes down to 1fps for certain things. Graphics look like bf3 I guess. Some nice improvements, but not really sure how I feel overall. Was expecting more oomph. Like all this talk about levelution when you can't even break the glass in the tall buildings with a chopper machine gun. Also weapons are like lasers now with no real physics like bf3 had. Sniper rifles remind me of Unreal tournament instagib CTF. Maybe they'll recode the game in 2 weeks who knows...

Should try Arma 3.

Higher level of cooperative gameplay and audience.

Are the textures unmapped? There is no "pop", it looks washed out and textures don't appear detailed from a distance. Dunno, not impressed yet, couldn't even hold my attention for 20 minutes.
That;s how I felt. Game looks like shit for what I was expecting.

Hey! Nice to see you didn't boycott the beta :p
I really hope they change the way all of the guns "feel', as strange as that sounds something feels off about every single one. I changed drivers back to 320.49 from the "Bf4 betas", those things broke sli for me with only about 50% usage and long spikes to 5 fps. Now it stays at high 50's on ultra, not that I play there.
I don't know what I was expecting with levolution, maybe I need to wait for more maps to really feel its effects. When I play beta next, I'll try to take out a tank at B, while taking out the garage pillars. Hopefully that'll spur my giggles.

BF2 was fun.
BC2 was fun to some extent, you must make sure to have a server where your hit reg works.
still good maps.
BF3 sucked epic.

Beta BF4 as far, is more fun, slowing down the gameplay a bit, and the map is one of the best designs I seen.
You can counter any sniper with heli or elevator and make small combats and then some larger ones.
Physics for Bf4 makes it much better as far than BF3 and BC2

Shame they didn't really overhaul the sound for bf4. BC2 still has the best sound of any game to date, wartapes setting in that game is just epic.

Anyone know what the best forum site is for this, does everyone just use the official EA one or is there something better? Haven't played BF since BC2 so got alot of catching up to do.

My game runs great on ultra. No hiccups and runs real smooth. Specs in sig.

Just curious if anyone faced a problem where their FPS drop when they face a certain direction. I was running around in an empty map testing out different graphic setting, and I noticed my FPS drops when I look somewhere towards north east of US starting position. I just can't figure out why. Tried different graphics setting but nothing helps.

to each their own i suppose. imo:

bf1942 - was badass, set a standard, and had modding - new, fresh, etc, etc
bf vietnam - 1942 in 1960's
bf2 - desert combat realized... alright.
bf2142 - people don't like trying new ideas... pretty much a dud anyways
bad company 2 - ok
bf3 - eh, broken paper rock scissors
bf4 - 11 years from 1942 and imo not bringing a ton to the table to be excited about (bf3 part 2)

That;s how I felt. Game looks like shit for what I was expecting.

I can't say I agree. On a mix of high/ultra it runs well and looks a lot better than BF3's Ultra settings... the only complaint I have is that the attack helicopter textures look a little flat, but it makes sense for it not to be shiny since it's supposed to be a military helicopter that doesn't want to attract fire ;). Areas that should be flat and dusty look it, post-FX like heat distortions, smoke, buildings, destruction in little bits, textures, etc. all look much better to me.

You really were expecting enough to make this "look like shit"? Both shots are running over 100fps at time of captures...

Compressed JPG's at that so texture sharpness/etc. suffered a lot:

Would have fun to at least try it, but.. no. I don't get to queue up on any server.

So apparently this "An error was reported from EA Online" error happens if you have more than one 'soldier' attached to your account. The "solution" so far has been for people to call (!!) EA and have a rep. remove all but one of the sub-accounts. You can't do it yourself, and rep. on chat can't do it either apparently.

Yeah, not doing that. That's just a silly workaround.

I had that error last night. Rebooted my computer and it worked again :p .

Almost as helpful as "Weird, I don't get that error". I'll keep arbitrary rebooting in mind!

You're welcome. Thanks for your input... Figured I would point it out since people sometimes forget simple things. No need to be an asshole about it bub.

Do people even do any type of research on open BETAs? The build we are playing on is old. I believe it is one step out of Alpha. There are no high res textures put into the open BETA.

In Battlefield Open BETAs is not for you to 'try' out the game like many other open BETAs but for DICE/EA to test networking functions and stabilize them.

So pleeeeeassseee do not complain about the graphics - do you research on their BETAs before you complain :/

Is any one else kind of bothered by the way prone people look? yesterday I died about 8 times because I'd walk over prone people thinking they were dead bodies. They don't have any subtle movements or anything it's weird. I know I'm not THAT bad at video games...
