Battlefield 4 Beta Discussion

Everything seems to be improved but the game feels weird.. Very cartoonish and CODish, I didn't really enjoy it. When I jumped back to BF3 right after it felt so much better, the aiming, mechanics of the game, BF3 just feels more natural.. Maybe I'm used to it more but there's definitely something off about BF4.

I'll give it a try few more times but so far I don't regret not preordering it.

This game doesn't like my crossfire setup.
High or Ultra (both with no msaa) i can get it ranging from 30 - 60 fps but then it will have very harsh drops in fps to the single digits. If I disable crossfire my overall framerate drops but i don't get the harsh single digit drops.

I have had no problem with the aiming and the movement. I thought it was just as smooth as BF3.

Its no where near as stiff as BC2, or BF2.

Afterburner lives in the past and doesn't work on 64 bit exe's.

This ^ and the rivatuner statistics that is the issue that it doesn't overlay on 64bit.

I was playing on triple screen 120hz with the nvidia 331.xx driver and couldn't enable the lightboost via toasty's program. Though I had an issue with the 331.xx not showing the gpu core clock and the memory clock within afterburner itself regardless of running games or sitting on the desktop, seems as though the driver isn't a "fuller" driver like many of the other beta drivers. Though the performance on 780 SLI was roughly 53-100 depending on what was happening.

but I also went back to 326.80 driver and was able to enable lightboost just fine but the gameplay was terrible, long periods of 13fps then bumps up to 80-100.

I don't have an issue with the movement either. I'm actually liking it, I think playing as infantry is more fun in BF4 than it was in BF3.

What alternative do you suggest?

Can't even download it. No support on the forums. Not hearing much besides marginal BF3 improvement. Probably going to cancel my pre-order. Wait time is like 3 hours on Origin support so will just charge back my CC.

Are you running a 64bit OS? pretty sure they are limiting the beta to 64 bit so maybe if you were using a 32bit OS it wouldnt even download. Release they will offer a 32bit install option.

i dont think the beta has proper crossfire support yet, the driver said 32bit crossfire profiles but the beta is 64bit only, and i have the same issue with my 7950's i get 30-60fps mosly in the 30 fps range, when i turn crossfire on.

You can re-bind commo rose, the problem is it still always comes up on Q. I usually use "Q" for interact, which is annoying as it always brings up the commo rose.

I think I'm going to pass on the beta, wait for feedback on the full game and more updated drivers. I was actually surprised how much I disliked the beta, I was more interested in a game on my mobile phone. Tank firing felt weird, movement felt a bit weird - also I couldn't vault over many normal objects I should have been able to.

Do you have to "Interact" with health/ammo kits to use them? I wasn't able to get any ammo out of a bag, even with Q bound to interact (maybe that's my issue).

I guess it also doesn't help that all the beta is in Normal mode...I hate normal.

SLI support appears to be lacking also. The only time I get proper utilization is in the menus. In game, both my 680's are averaging around 50% usage.

That sounds about right. When I launch BF3 which graphically looks the same, it runs like a dream on high and ultra settings. This game? not so much, lol.

Ah well, I'm not too concerned. I probably won't be getting this right away, I'll wait for a sale or dlc bundle. I got BF3 premium which I haven't really played a whole lot of.

I needed to rebind Q and heard some guy was able to import his BF3 settings and somehow that worked (because, which kills me, this was also a bug with BF3 until like the second patch iirc so I would think it needs to be fixed in the game itself).

I just use autohotkey in the meantime to change q to another keystroke same as I had to do two years ago.

What alternative do you suggest?

The internal "Perfoverlay" commands. One shows fps counter and another shows CPU and GPU rendering info and graph. Note you can tab auto-complete those commands (like *nix) so just type "Pe" for starters and hit tab.

from what i'm reading online many i5-2500K users are seeing terrible performance. guess i'll see how shitty the beta runs when i get home from work.

Count me in that camp 2500k gtx 680 24GB ram and still shitty frames

You don't have to interact with them, just stand near them like in BF3. For the support class you cannot resupy the airburst cannon (or whatever it's called; your secondary weapon). That through me for a loop and I had the same thought as you, wondering what I had to press to reapply myself.

I was an engineer, and it wouldn't resupply my RPG. Unless it's incredibly slow now; I sat there for probably a good 30 seconds or more (was on a roof looking down taking potshots at people, supply pack right next to me).

hmm i'll have to try resupplying RPG's tonight when i play. ammo packs were pretty damn scarce when i was playing last night. seemed like there were 8 snipers for every 1 support class.

Have you tried the Nvidida 320.49 driver?

If those are the sept 30 beta then yes. Going to give it a re-boot tonight and try and mess with the video settings. See where I can get .Running on a korean Xstar at 2560 x1440 110Hz

No they are not. I was running the 9/3, those are 331.40 and I had hte same stuttery results you did. Download and do a clean install of 320.49. I'm willing to bet, you like I did will have much better results.

willing to give it a try. thanks

you have to unlock the ammo box for support they only start with ammo bags, the ammo box allows explosives to be rearmed

Playing at 2560x1440, the graphics look better in BF3 (sharper textures and text was sized nice and small so it looked nice). The text is so enlarged and textures are blurry in the beta... doesn't look 2560x1440 friendly. Hope the graphics are better in the final version.

I found the text in BF3 way too small at 2560 and much prefer the BF4 size. Though it's easily adjustable.

BF4 automatically accepted and supported my 110hz monitor overclock at 2560x1440. That was a pleasant surprise. With a single GTX 670 the game is playable at ultra everything and 2xMSAA at 2560x1440 but there are major lag spikes when zoomed in tank, heavy action and 64 player maps. Will buy another 670 or a R9 290X.

Using Nvidia 320.49 drivers. No stuttering like a lot of folks are complaining about. I have to say, my favorite thing about Windows 8 for gaming is the fact that I don't have Aeroglass crash every time I play Battlefield. I also don't get random low memory errors while playing the game and have 4+gbs of free memory available. Yes, Windows 8 looks like shit but for gaming it works great. The task manager is spectacular too.

i've been having fun with it. great infantry combat, decent tank combat, and hopping in a chopper and zipping around the buildings is damn good fun.

Yeah, i'm liking the balance too. I haven't tried the choppers yet, keep forgetting to connect my stick and map the controls.

I still don't understand the auto lean mechanic they have going on.

Lot's of bugs that I don't think should be in this, like if someone revives you, the Spawn UI doesn't go away until you spam ESC and Deploy, but by the time you get back to your player you've been murdered. Seeing muzzle flash through walls. these aren't "polish" issues.

And so you can hate me, the spawn on squad is annoying. nothing like siting in a room reloading and some guy run in and 4 people spawn on them. It's dumb.

All in all, I probably won't pick this up in at launch unless they come out with more compelling things. I'm starting to think I've outgrown these types of FPS's and it saddens me. Time to go back to Arma or something that doesn't have people spawning out of nowhere or spamming grenade launchers.

With my stock 4770K and 7970 at GHz Edition clocks on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit it runs a lot better than I was expecting after reading about it. 50-80 fps (1200p on ultra), I'd say it averages around low 60s or high 50s. This is on 13.9 WHQL driver, haven't tried any beta drivers.

Squad spawning has been in BF since BC2, maybe even BC (I am not sure I haven't played on console). So this isn't something new.

I am not sure why that's a bad thing though. I mean I understand that if you are in a room, kind of in a defenseless position, you get taken down. That's kind of expected isn't it?

I have 6gb of ram and my system usage goes to 5+gb while I'm running the game only...
Stutters super bad, then few seconds later its smooth, then back to 2fps.

Might buy 2 more gigs.. Recommended ram is 8gb.
Okay weird. I re-overclocked my system. My i7 was running stock at 2.66Ghz, so I brought it back up to 4.0ghz and upped my GPU clock to 850 Mhz. Its all running smooth as hell now.

System still has 88%+ ram usage. probably still going to upgrade.

Yup, same feelings here. Love the verticality of the maps and parachuting around is amazing fun.

See I loved BC2 and I don't remember it being so abused, and in hardcore mode, you had a fighting chance.

I get 80-90%+ average usage with oc'd 670 4GB SLI @ 2560x1440 110hz Win8 327.23 drivers. My CPU was limiting me at lower graphics settings so I cranked them up and the GPU use skyrocketed, while not losing much of anything in the way of framerate in the process.

i'm hoping a single GTX 780 or R9-290X will get me above 60 min fps but i'm not sure my 2500K is up to the task.

At 1920x1080, probably most of the way on settings. Frankly though I was surprised when I looked back at how much quicker my 780 (1150mhz core/7180ish mem) was than an old 1372mhz core/~7200mhz mem 670 was (only ~20%) in my tests. That's what spurred me to sell the 780 and just get a pair of 4gb 670's (on 680pcb/hsf) to SLI, and I've gained a huge amount in both benches and game FRAPS tests in BF3 multi 64p (35-40%+). I made out with a small amount to pocket, and got the cards :).

Honestly I'd recommend SLI or just crossfiring your current 7970 if it's performance you're concerned with... 1440p 110hz looks just as fluid when at 110fps as it did on the 780, and responds as instantly too. You'll get a lot more for your money. EDIT: And, with the nicer 7970's going for $270-330 on deals right now, it's a very strong value proposition in your case having a 7970 already, in my opinion.
