getting into bitcoining?

I've heard its because Nvidia's cards have fewer shader units. Even though they are more efficient and make up for it in gaming, they can't keep up with AMD's higher count.
However I heard that the Titan still does horrendous for mining, considering it has over 2500 CUDA cores.

Titan is only half as fast as a 7950 when it comes to mining, and is even worse with Litecoin mining. About equal to a 5830...

Yes there's something more to it, I don't know the reason why Nvidia's can't run SHA-256 hashes as fast as ATi's. Anyone care to explain why CUDA is weak in this area?

ATi got lucky that their hardware gained an unexpected advantage over nvidia that came out of nowhere.

AMD card architecture shaders are simpler than nvidia's and can work very well in parallel, though from what I have heard, are not as easy to program. Also, AMD has additional hardware implementations which work well with SHA-256, where as nvidia does not and has to compensate with doing this partly through software. Both of these combined make for the huge difference in performance.

I think I'm up and running pretty well now with the 6950 + 7850.

Woo you went to litecoins haha. I have a few 6950's running and I've been able to get abount 400 khash/s. Here's my settings. Maybe they'll help you get another 50 khash/s or so.

800/1250 (stock speeds)
256 worksize
18 Intensity
8000 thread concurrency
1 gpu threads
1 vectors

That was only true with cards up to the HD6K series that used VLIW shaders. GCN based cards (HD7K+) are based on an all new more complex architecture and arguably more powerful than Nvidia's when it comes to compute.

dustcoin.com is another good one to check out with rates of the currencies along with electricity costs per day. I also started mining in a new pool on wemineltc.com I am a little leary about notroll after they took 25% of everyones coins. Took me a while to withdraw from there too.

Here is my cgminer.conf file in case anyone wants to see one with 2 7950's. I change the intensity depending on what I am doing.

Mines unlocked to 6970 specs... got any tips for that? With as close as the 7850 is, I knew I wasn't doing something exactly right...

It looks like things are starting to reverse a little bit. I'm not sure how long the buying will last for, but its probably setting up for another round of pump and dump in the next few days... They'll keep doing it until volume runs dry from a lack of panic sellers/impulsive buyers, and hopefully the action flattens out and prices hold just above $100 for a long time after this mess. I'd really hate to continue mining if shit were back at $30, even $70. I won't even want to install this quad rad if this becomes the case. I'll lose all motivation.

How's the motivation now?

One the bright side most pools have already lost about 5% of miners, I expect that will continue to drop. Which is a good thing as LTC difficulty has rises 32% in one week and made it pointless to mine if you're paying for electricity.

Wouldn't say pointless. LTC profitability for 650 hash and 360 watts @ 0.10kwh is still ~$3.30 a day. If you are betting it will go up in value, that's not a bad place to be.

Right now LTC is in a hole, not all that profitable mining it, still better than BTC though (which difficulty is going over 9 million in a few days by the looks of it). MtGox are going to be adding LTC in the next week or 2 though which i think will give it some huge support.

Heh, I left my CG miner running all this time anyways. Luckily it is raining in the North East and I maintained temps under 47C all day. I didn't bother checking the charts much all day. I just checked the prices now and it was quite a ride. Its best to ignore this type of price action and just keep calm, and mine on :)

It did hit a low in the 60's, but doubled to an insane 120 in a day.

I want to return this quad 120 EK rad and get a dual 180mm by Alpha cool. 120mm rads are a thing of the past.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/XFX-ATI-Rad...854?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item1e793bd7ae

Another used 5870 sold for $233 with 20 bids. 20 bids is more than average for a 5870.

One more question: How do I flash my 5870 to run on Macs, so I can charge these toolbags more?

Hey guys.

Few noob questions

Is all this ASIC hype real? Seems like gpu mining should be obsolete in the coming weeks with butterfly labs about to ship ASIC units.

Seems like ASIC will not affect litecoins since its not sha256, but will ASIC's have an indirect effect on litecoins?

Litecoins seem pretty interesting, but how do you turn them into cash? Is there something similar to Mtgox?

How do you find a good pool for litecoins? There is a plethora of information about bitcoin pools, but not about litecoins. I did find this comparison chart. Some that I found were http://litecoinrain.org/en/ and https://www.litecoinpool.org/

Is pps better then pplns? It seems so.

And finally, does gui miner support litecoins? If not, what do you guys use?

@ASIC hype: It is real. They do work for BTC and work very well. The units ship out slowly though. Some people have been waiting for a year for their BFL units.

@ASICS indirectly affecting LTC: Only time will tell.

@LTC into cash: You can turn them directly into cash at Mt. Gox and similiar sites.

@LTC pool info: https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Comparison-of-mining-pools

(Shameless plug: I'm in the netcodepool.org pool. Works very well. <1% stales / invalid.)

@PPS being better than PPLNS: If you're a big shot hasher, PPS will be better for you. If you don't have tons of hashrate, PPLNS will be better for you.

@scrypt-guiminer supports LTC, not regular guiminer. But don't use scrypt-guiminer. It's just a front-end. Use the cgminer from here.

Find me @ http://www.netcodepool.org/chat if you need help setting cgminer up.

Read this guide first for configuring your batch file for cgminer.

np

Forgot to mention - you can also use your CPU -> cpuminer

and your nvidia gpu -> cudaminer

Believe it or not, i'm actually getting 230kh/s out of my GTX570 with cudaminer. :D

i use guiminer scrypt--any reason not to?

I thought since guiminer scrypt was just an easier user interface for the traditional command line miners. So there shoudn't be any impact on performance?

Im about to hook up 2 x 7950s. Hoping to hit 900kh/s+

If you like to set it up quickly and then go, no. There is no performance degredation as it is just a frontend.

I found that using reaper was not optimal on my 7970s (600kh/s per) so i went to CGMiner and now i have them pegged @ 710-720kh/s.

Also, I have found though that scrypt guiminer does not configure its cgminer backend properly... i coudn't get cgminer to run through it because the flags were all jacked up.

You are correct, there is no performance degredation with scrypt guiminer.

I just found that reaper was not optimal for my 7970s (and probably your 7950s) which it does run properly...but it would not configure cgminer properly (flags all jacked up) so i ditched it and went straight to the 2.11.4 cgminer through batch file / command line.

thanks might give that a shot. The command line stuff just looks daunting...

When you run 2 cards for mining. Do you have to enable anything for them both to run correctly? or do you just do what you did for 1 card two times?

If you open the dev console in the gui-cgminer you can see the actual command thats being run on the command line. Its pretty easy to use the gui miner to test different configurations and when its nailed down you can just steal the arguments and run with it.

With the gui miner you can target a specific video card. You can use file -> new scrypt miner to add a new miner. Just make one for each card.

As a power user the command line version is preferred. It's a lot more flexible and less clicks to get it running once you are set up.

Nothing special outside of letting each card have its own cgminer (im paranoid:))

You can largely minimize the command prompt stuff by using a batch file.

Make a batch file with:

cgminer.exe --scrypt -o url[colon]port -u xxxx -p xxxx -d 0 --thread-concurrency 8192 --shaders 1792 --intensity 13 --worksize 256 -g 2

save it and then put it into your miner folder.

Now, clone the batch file you just made and go into it and change the -d 0 to -d 1, where your second card is device 1.

save that.

Make shortcuts of both batch files and put em on your desktop.

If you're filled eveything out right you should see 2 cgminer windows pop up.

Note you may need to play with the intensity setting to get max hashes.

I've been having mining problems with deepbit and eclipse mining consortium while using CGminer.

I'm not sure what the fuck the problem is, but with deepbit, I wasn't getting credit all day yesterday. My Balance was 0.0058xxxxx for the longest time. CGMiner worked all day scrolling "Accepted blah blah share pool 0" all along. No real 'errors'.

I reset my worker stats, restarted CGminer, and the balance ticker started ticking again. So I lost out an a whole day's worth of work. Of course, I email the admin at deepbit, and he doesn't respond. Sent him a follow up email, no response... shithead....

So I switched to Eclipse MC, started mining, CGminer connects and shares are accepted. So for the last 24 hours, my balance on Eclipse is 0. All my worker stats are 0.

I had an issue with Slush's pool as well, when trying to send my rewards balance to my wallet, it took over 24 hours.

What the fuck is the deal lately with these pools?

deepbit sucks man. I tried that pool and i wasn't getting what I was supposed to get paid. Try bitminter. Very good pool. Or Slush.

I've had really good results with Bitminter... awesome pool with a pretty low fee. I do about .47 btc/day. Not much but it adds up over a month

About $50 bucks a day...$1,500 a month....i'd say that's pretty damn good.

I never had an issue with Eclipse once I got the workers set properly. My problem was I wasn't using my individual workers as User/PW but was trying to use my account. After I fixed that, it worked fine.

My 4x7970 setup has the ghz bios flashed and at stock clocks of 1050mhz can mine at ~2.5gh/s. It consumes ~1250 watts at the wall.

If I was buying a card for mining, what's the best bang for the buck card to get right now?

Say 1 7950 or 2 7790s?

7950.

2 x 7790s may slightly outdo a 7950, but you'd have to tweak hard and overclock the eyeballs off of them to match what you'd do on a stock 7950.

7790s don't even have the memory bandwidth that 7850s have and as such i think they are relatively poor choices for mining if you got a little bit of cash to drop.

Nice - right about where i'm at.

Edit: What's the make / model of your psu?

Speaking on the ASIC on the first page, what are these ASICs?

Are they dedicated co-processors on a small PCB?

Yeah it seems to work.... thats odd how Deepbit.net doesn't involve such bullshit to get things working...

Too bad deepbit will count your shares and give you credit for them for a while... then all of a sudden, shares stop showing up on your account, like they're doing a sneak attack and stealing your shit. The admin on deepbit hasn't gotten back to me for the last 3 days now.
