Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

When's this coming out!?!?!? Now that they have their mark, I'm hoping for epicness.

It won't be out for another 2 or 3 years, when the 2 years might be the Alpha/Beta mark of the game.

I can't get to the site to see what the $6 million rewards are. Is that the one where they get some of the old Wing Commander voice actors?

The good thing is, this isn't a Zero Day development funding. They already have a lot done for a crowd funded project. With the money they've raised, and a 2 year development period, I can imagine this is going to be "epic" on a scale not seen in gaming for a long time. Not to mention, this is going to be supported after release, so the epicness should only continue to grow.

The $6M "unlocks" are:
Cloud Imperium Games said:
"Six million was what it would take us to build the game we were imagining with all the bells and whistles we wanted included. Well, here we are with just over eight hours to go and that impossible goal where everything is unlocked is suddenly in sight. At six million you'll launch the game with 100 systems, a full orchestral score and a free copy of the first Squadron 42 mission disk, Behind Enemy Lines."

With nearly an hour left to go, I've paid for my basic $35 package, but it hasn't shown up as of yet on "Your Pledges" on RSI! I plan to upgrade to another package, but I'd like to make sure everything is locked in by the end of official crowdfunding. Hope this won't be a problem....

Also, over 6 million now!

Anyone want to buy some hardware? I'm tempted by one of those Vaanduul Fighters....

if you pledged on the rsi website, it should be listed if you click on the "your account" link at the top, and then on "my pledges". if you pledged on kickstarter, it will be linked after the kickstarter has ended (will probably take a coupel of weeks, as it has to be done manually i think).

Hmm. Thanks. So then what are the 6M rewards?

Look at it like this:
2Mil Squadron 42
4Mil Squadron 42 with Freelancer like open space
6Mil Full sized experience with big single player Squadron 42 and big Freelecer type open space game in full glory.

With 6Mil we will get full sized Wing Commander like game mode with Freelancer openess and persistent open world, and what Maplehamwich said.

ah, you are using outdated information. needless to say, we have achieved every stretch goal. information about 5.5M and 6M goals can be found here.

Couldn't get through the main site yesterday or today to support so went ahead and jumped in via Kickstarter... glad to support PC first developers... Long live the PC!!!

Funny, Freelancer came out almost 10 years ago and pretty much since then we've had nothing (or close to nothing, if you include the X series), and we waited patiently, just for a moment like this. To get the game we wanted. The game we deserve. The game that will be on a new level of epic. Thank you everyone and Chris Roberts. I will say this right now, I love you guys for all of this.

Yeah, there maybe some form you need to fill(probs can't access the site at the moment) however, your pledge is always good. I wouldn't worry even if it takes some time to sync to the account. The end of the crowdfunding isn't going to change anything.

Meanwhile I bumped mine from $40 to the $125 "Wingnut" package.
I am now a Colonel :D

Can't wait for my Hornet!

Took awhile for my pledge to show up on my RSI "Your Pledge" display. Hit the upgrade arrow and... is anyone else noticing that Avast Matey isn't available on the upgrade screen? Digital Wingnut and Lancer aren't there either. Pirate Pack isn't available on Digital Add-On checkout screen. Hope they'll allow upgrades to it even after funding ends... it is available on the main page after all.

People must be paying tons for new ships. I need to convince myself not to buy a Vanduul Fighter....

they aren't available, and they won't be available (at least for a while). due to the way the website works, it's apparently a lot of work to add them, and by the time they would have been added, the campaign would've been over with. the pirate pack is available; click on "grab your add ons" on the right hand side and you'll see it in the list there.

From the pre-alpha in-game stuff it already looks amazing. Can't wait! I fear I may need an upgrade by release, though, but I guess that's a couple years off.

That's insane. It looks like 2013-2015 will be a second coming of the golden era of PC gaming. Just in time to ignore another generation of consoles to boot.

Funny enough, Squadron 42 is the part I really care about. The rest of it is just a cherry on top. I want me some god damn WC/Freespace/Tie Fighter action!! :D

You know what will make me laugh? If the big VG giants (EA, Activision, etc) see how well Star Citizen does on not only crowd funding, but when it's released and does very well, they all start jumping on the bandwagon for new space sim games... but probably on the consoles first like a bunch of greedy dicks they are. By people paying 6M+ overall for this game, a game that won't even really see even alpha stages for 12 months, it shows how much of a market, how much of a niche there is for games like this, and that they should exist. EA, Activision and co. would never dream that a space sim would be profitable in the past 10 years or so. Wow are they fucking wrong.

That's a good thing. Let them play catch up, then we will see the market flooded.

I know the market should be flooded more with space sim games, but too many games from a genre can water down the experience of some. Like how shooters today are almost all the same. Shooters are so prevalent in this day and age, it's very hard to separate yourself from the pack and be that good. But I would laugh because it's EA's and Activision's reaction, which would be the same as "me too" kind of mentality. And because of their power and money, might overshadow something like Star Citizen, and then piss me off even more. I just have a feeling, if the market does get flooded, it would be punched into submission to be accessible as possible so even the most casual gamer would be able to play it (COD-esque).

I'll give an example of with EA. Origin Systems and Westwood were doing AMAZING jobs on their own (even though Westwood did publish with EA for RA2 and RA2:YR). Then they got absorbed into EA's fold, didn't become themselves and EA essentially destroyed everything they worked so hard to do well at. Look at Ultima 8 and 9. Look at RA3 and C&C4.

It opens up the market to indie saturation, too. While the AAA's will be scrambling to "outdo" Roberts, the larger indies will be putting a unique spin on things. Of course the usual suspects are going to be whoring, that's what they do.

In terms of the big publishers, the best thing that can come from the success of this is respect for the PC platform. Respect that leads to PC specific development, and the extinction of poor console ports. They should at the very minimum realize that one of, if not the biggest, reason this was successful is that he made it ultra clear this is being developed as PC first and all that entails.
