Mechanical Keyboard Guide

Even the click of blue switches really isn't that loud, the loudest noise comes from keys bottoming out (clank, plastic cap striking a metal plate) and many people can adapt to not bottom out when typing (which is one of the advantage of mechanical Cherry keyboards, key actuates halfway down instead of all the way down like domes). While gaming you'll probably always bottom out to.

As stated above, you could always place rubber o rings at the bottom of the key stems which completely eliminates the bottom out noise, at that point a keyboard with red/black/brown switches is probably as quiet or quieter than any cheap $20 rubber dome keyboard. Some would argue that cancels out much of what makes a mechanical keyboard feel nicer but the smooth travel and durability is still there, rubber domes never push down evenly (since you've literally bending the dome until it gives in).

The only keyboard that I've liked that was not a mechanical keyboard is a IBM model SK-8811.

Been using that one for about a year. And a model M at work.

I really want to try a cherry blue or brown soon as well.

Those were solid rubberdome boards. Great layout, and the blue/purple "enter" key was such a nice accent... much more aesthetically pleasing than, say, a big ugly red escape key

Apologies for those waiting for Choc Mini impressions, been working too much.

Anyway I'm in love with the keyboard. It took time to adjust from using the MX Red switches to Black, but I don't think I could go back. NKRO is awesome too.

It's beautifully constructed, and looks great next to my G700. I highly recommend it, if you want a "heavier" tactile feedback than the Reds, go with the Blacks. But again the whole MX Switch is based on personal preferences. I haven't tried the Clear ones, but I've tried the Blue, Brown, Red and now Black...and Black is my favorite.

I'll post some pictures later tonight in that picture thread.

I don't find the whole "browns are quiet" thing true. Yes, bottoming out does create a lot of noise, but this isn't the only noise when typing on a mechanical keyboard. The return of a key actually creates quite a bit of noise; more than a dome or even a scissor switch bottoming out (which they are designed to do afterall), and since I do not bottom out and I use MX Browns, it is the bulk of the noise. Some people don't mind. Then again, some people don't mind the clicking of blues.

The only way to stop this noise is if your finger is cushioning it while it returns, in which case I can't really see you being a fast typist as your finger would have to stay on that key instead of immediately traveling to another after actuation.

There USED to be lots of my sound samples at Geekhack but they nuked the Wikis including Reviews and Sound Samples subforums.

TONE is the biggest difference, not Db levels.

There is a link to Db level measurements here:

You really find browns noisy? I agree blue's click is still clearly audible even from a distance but I can't say the slight click (more of a bump really) on my keyboard with browns is really all that noticeable, maybe it's due to ambient noise around here.

The Unicomp EnduraPro custom came in today.

Black/Black/Blank is nice, but I'd have preferred they be textured for the whole key like the top of the key and the chassis itself. Unfortunately, they're a glossy black on the sides.

The keys themselves feel great to type on. No idea how they'll do in gaming as far as key rollover goes, but if that's a problem, I can always toss in another keyboard if I need it. Since I'm doing less FPS games these days, I don't think it'll be that big an issue.

The chassis looks and feels very industrial...more function over form. I happen to like that philosophy, but if someone's looking for perfection, they may not like the subtle blemishes on the keys (from the molding process). The USB cable is on the right side of the keyboard, but the cable won't fit in the path, due to it being too thick.

The Trackpoint, I'm torn on. Unfortunately, it's not as...tight...as the Trackpoint in my Thinkpad, EliteBook, or Latitude. There's actual wiggle room before it starts moving. The keys themselves have a lot of travel before they activate. It reminds me a lot of the Trackpoint IV I used to have about a decade ago for the keys, although its Trackpoint was more firm.

I've only been typing on it as long as this thread...but so far I really like it.

Now to find a new mouse to replace the ASUS ROG I've been using for a year and a half or so.

The classic dome will fit, but the soft dome will not. I don't have a soft rim, because they suck and I got rid of them. I don't know if they made any changes between the M13 and the ones on the Core 2 Duo or Core i Thinkpads these Trackpoint caps I have came from.

Just got all 4 of my Classic 104 PS2 unicomps in. I'm impressed! I thought I was gonna have problems gaming with the ~2kro, but I can sneak, move, strafe, and jump at the same time, no problem. Typing is a dream, and they sound just like I remember! I'm very pleased with my purchase!

I was able to handle some Q3A on it, I don't think the key rollover is going to be a problem.

WTF happened to the Geekhack wiki?

I hope that someone has those articles elsewhere. At least the Cherry corp product code guide.

I have mine backed up.

Slowly rebuilding in the form of IMGUR albums. Look for announcements here:

Why don't you ask iMav, Mkawa, and the rest of the Moderator team there? Worst that can happen is they'll permaban you for questioning them.

There used to be a Geekhack wiki with Cherry Corp ordering codes.

That got R00TW0RMed.

Unfortunately Cherry Corp English is of little use either.

This isn't much better.

Intredasting..... a new job title at work recently moved me from a noisy area full of ringing phones and talking people to a dead silent room full of developers. I very quickly decided to bring my Cherry Blue equipped keyboard (Leopold tenkeyless) home and install a standard work-supplied rubber dome keyboard at my desk. I was getting too many stares from coworkers as their quiet concentration was regularly interrupted by the sound of machine gun fire. I've been considering ordering a keyboard with Cherry Brown switches for a while now but wasn't quite sure how different they'd actually sound. That video was surprising.

I'm having a rather interesting problem with my Unicomp USB model.

I find that during boot it often initializes so slowly that I can't get into the bios.

I have to retry rebooting several times, and then eventually I can get in.

Has anyone else had this problem?

That IS an attractive keyboard.

The violet keys, and the BIG late 90s IBM logo are nice.

The layout around the arrow keys is a little funky, and too bad it's not buckling spring :p

Yes it would be nice to have a buckling spring on this KB.

But the tactile feel is pretty decent even with it being a rubber dome keyboard.

What would people say is a good price for a NIB Das Pro Keyboard? I've seen some go on ebay for ~75 and am tempted

Yeah, I saw the deskthority wiki its no where near as user friendly as what was on Geekhack. I haven't been back to geekhack since it was hacked. Without the wiki that place is useless to be honest. Its just a big circle jerk now.

I wish they made a choc mini wireless, I need something for the HTPC, currently using a k340

Dont really have time to go through this entire thread, but im looking for a black 100% mech keyboard. Dont really need it for all that much gaming, but i want ps2 and full size. Thanks

Im using just a standard stock keyboard as it is.

Black switches or black in color? There is a big list of keyboards in the first post of the thread, most will be USB but you can use an adapter.

there's a big selection of mechanical keyboards over at Mechanicalkeyboards.com if you just want to browse. I haven't found a better variety on one site, but not everything is always in stock.

I feel like my typing is slowing on my old Logitech keyboard... or possibly not having the feeling of that I want to type as much anymore. Maybe there's too much fatigue on my keyboard? Maybe I'm just going nuts and just want a mechanical keyboard that badly?

Spilled tea with honey on my black widow ultimate a few days ago, promptly unplugged it and let it dry out. Already washed the keys and aprox a dozen switches are quite stiff from the honey so I was thinking I'd soak in distilled water and spam only the keys that I have issues with? Don't really want to soak it in isopropyl alcohol but I can. Any recommendations on how long to soak and etc?

I had this problem on my logitech g110 actually... something about key placement and the weight of each key made it a huge drag to type on... and game on. might've been key rubbing even, thinking back on it.

using mx reds for the first time now, and i actually enjoy typing at home again. took me awhile to get used to the lightness but i've stopped brushing keys accidentally for the most part.

I actually did the nickel weight test for my keyboard. I had 3 different keys that different pressure actuation weights (70, 75 and 80).

To actually do it right you'll need to take apart the board, desolder the effected switches and open them up to clean them properly and access whether or not they'll need to be replaced.

All the keystrokes are recognized so I was hoping I could get rid of the sticky without having to solder or replace anything.

Registering is one of the problems, but without taking them apart and cleaning them other problems could arise. The contact leaflets becoming deformed from sticking or springs rusting if cleaned improperly would probably be the biggest problem, but others have noted changes in spring-rate and/or the <click> from blue switches from not being completely cleaned after hours of soaking.

Thanks for the replies

Hmm, remember seeing ripster leave out some switches for quite a while outside and they did not rust. Can't seem to find a guide on how to take apart mx switches.

I'll take a look around, but I haven't seen many guides on it. Just have to be careful when popping it open and not let any pieces get away.
