Max Payne 3 -- When Rockstar 'pushes the envelope'

So anyone found a way to turn off mouse aceleration? That's the main thing killing this game for me, aiming doesn't feel precise or anything.

I love the bullet time aspects of the game...Rockstar really nailed the mechanics of the overall gameplay...my only complaint is that I don't like the way that you are on a clock and everything needs to be done reasonably quick...you can't just spend time exploring your surroundings as you always get a warning to keep moving and if you ignore it you die

the game reminds me of the TV show '24'...with Max as the Jack Bauer character

I think you can spend a little more time exploring after the first couple missions though they clearly want to keep you moving to keep the pace up.

Yes, folks you're going to need 3 GTX 690, a 64 core CPU, and 128 GB of DDR3 RAM to run this game. And 100GB of hard drive space minimum.

REAAAALLLLY?!?!? Aww man, I'm gonna have to spend $5K just to play this game. Unreal, you guys are so lucky!! <Jealous>

Edit: Also is it just me, or is his left arm in the top picture in an EXCRUCIATING position? The fore-arm that is.

Hahaha, yeah that is really something and kind of impressive that you caught that.

I used to have a pretty big stint doing animation and modeling using Maya and 3DS Max, so that kind of stuff sticks out to me like neon colors do on a dark background. Not to mention I had a weird experience with it too last night. I was going ape shit from cover to cover and when I hit Q (cover button) against this one kitchen island, he decided to go all contortionist on me, for no apparent reason. I sat there with the stupidest look on my face I bet.

How's the A.I.? If a guy is shooting at you from behind cover, will he move around the room and run towards you or will he just keep popping out from behind his cover until you shoot him or rush him?

The AI is damn smart. They go all over the place and they really make you sweat. Standing in one spot for too long makes them push hard.

As mentioned before, this game is definitely sweet.

Some individual reviews were upset that they game got away from its "dark" roots. I say the heck with that, after playing thru the Gears of War series and the Batman series I've been ready for a nice "sunny" vibrant game. Couldn't have asked for more.

I'm with you man, I really like the atmosphere and locale of the game, it's a refreshing and welcome change. Lot of people complaining about the cover system as well in this game. He's a cop (well, ex-cop, but you get the gist). There's guns. Why WOULDN'T there be a cover system?? I've never seen cops slow-mo dodging out in the wide open with criminals. ;)

Looks like I might have to pick this up after all. I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow for a new washing machine and it will be a good opportunity to get Max while I'm there.

game crashed for me in Chapter 2 and when I went back into the game all my saves/progress was erased...luckily I wasn't too far into the game but still annoying

What the hell? That stinks man  Can't really tell you what happened heh.

Game's awesome!

1920X1200 I have a lot of the eye candy maxed out but not all of it because it takes me past the 1536MB of Video Ram my GTX480 has.

I'm pretty pumped to get out of work and do an all-nighter. Might even beat it tonight. It's hard to put down.

I've never seen cops dodge in slow-mo period. At least outside of video games and movies. That would be pretty rad...

Glad to hear the A.I. isn't dumbed-down. I was going to wait for this even though, like many here, I LOVED the first two games. I already have a huge backlog and was going to pick up SR3 this weekend, but this is becoming harder to resist.

yup the game won't even allow me to select 8X MSAA because I don't have 2GB of video card RAM...most games allow you to select any advanced graphics settings regardless whether you theoretically have the horsepower for it or not

Those individuals are retarded as this is easily the darkest out of the series.. Maybe not the main setting (though there are chapters set in dark new york also)

But the subject matter/shit that goes down in this is easily the darkest of the lot.

I've played this damn game for 11 hours today (haven't done ANY work) and I honestly think it's safe to say this is my favourite ever single player campaign.. It's fucking awesome, will def be replaying this and getting all the collectables (I never do that usually)

Rockstar games apparently tend to not (same issue in GTA IV, though there was an .ini workaround I believe).

8X MSAA is pointless overkill anyway. especially @ 1920+ resolutions

so I try to play it for a few minutes whilst drinking my coffee before I go to the gym and what do I get? ERROR_OS_VISTA - service pack or higher is required to play the game.

DAMNIT! I guess I need to upgrade from win 7 sp1.

I bet if I was running it on some shitty xbox it would run great.

EDIT: its getting farther since i went into the steam directory and changed it to vista sp2 compatibility mode.

Same. I pulled the trigger on it and Saints Row The Third. Gonna be playing both tomorrow. Not worth me waiting around all day.

You're going to have a blast with both for sure.

SR3...fantastic game!

Does the game look squaty for anyone else? I feel like it's forcing the wrong aspect ratio. I'm using 1680x1050

Also forgot to mention. For some reason Max reminds me of Walt from Breaking Bad. Straight up middle age badass, especially with the head shave :)

Played SR3 on xbox when my buddy had one. I tried the whole console thing. Had a PS3 a few times and I sold it because I'd play through the games I bought so fast and be bored with it. I asked myself - why have a console when I have so much more fun with PC gaming.

Problem is it lags me too much when playing D3. I'm going to leave both games downloading tonight and hope they are ready tomorrow for some weekend gaming.

Has anyone played Kane and Lynch on PC? Is Max Payne similar style to this?

30gb are they for real? can anyone confirm what exactly is occupying this much data?

What made this game 30gb is the cut-scenes, a lot of them aren't done in the games engine, and are 1080p instead of the horrible blocky 480+p that we get usually (like deus ex for example) 1080p video is large in filesize no matter how you try and compress it

:p :)

Everything. Cutscenes, the works. See Laffles post.

This isn't some quckie console port. Sure, they could have compressed better. If that's the only complaint people have coming off this thing I think that's going to be pretty good for PC gamers.

It looks awesome. It runs awesome. It's fun to play.

It's an awesome game. People need to get over this and get past it. It's worth making room for. :)

The MP games are much better. Kane and Lynch games had potential but fell short IMO. The second one had excellent art direction and was a few steps away from being a good game.

First break since I got home from work....lovin this game so far.

It's hard and frustrating, too, just like a Max Payne game is supposed to be. I'm at an area in a shootout where I've died a good ten times or so. Had to quit in frustration.

Yup, it's Max Payne. :)

Oh yeah man. Even my first playthrough on MEDIUM I'm dying. I'm sure Hard and Hardcore are pretty fuckin challenging.

the [H] performance article mentions gorgeous textures and stunning image quality but while it looks really good to me it doesn't look that good...I'm playing with everything maxed out (except for MSAA which I had to set to 4X)...the gameplay is amazing but it doesn't look better then Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Arkham City in terms of overall DX11 IQ

Same here. Playing on Medium for my first go through.

Agreed.

yea. everything is 4:3 stretched. Many tickets / tweets about that, they are looking into it.

I seem to be spamming the Shoot Dodge key all the time and barely use anything else...it just looks cool and it's easy to take out multiple enemies

how come the straight up 'Bullet Time' key only seems to work for a short period of time while the Shoot Dodge key lasts longer?...I notice a bar for Bullet Time...is it based on how many enemies you kill?...then how come it doesn't apply to Shoot Dodge?

Not even close.
