Max Payne 3 -- When Rockstar 'pushes the envelope'

Unfortunately I'm back at 88% after decryption, which admittedly, was stuck at 100% for some reason. So now I have to download another 4 gigs. What hell.

Yep. The current CAP has a Max Payne 3 profile. In fact it specifically states: "Max Payne 3 (DirectX11 version): Improves CrossFire scaling "

Well, it improved mine into the negatives. It runs a lot better without CrossFire enabled.

On 6950's at least.

I will say this though, this game runs beautifully. If this is any indication of how GTA V will run I have high hopes for it's PC version. Granted I'm only 1 mission in...

Got some in game screen shots?

Finally got it to work ok for me, turned off vsync and other things in nvidia control panel and that seemed to stop the stuttering.

Fraps doesn't seem to like the game, can't get the fps counter to show up in game.

As far as the game goes it's fun, but maybe I've just changed somewhat but man, playing on "medium" difficulty because I usually likle a challenge but not too hard, but hate easy/casual.

Was the last max payne games this hard? Like it seems there's no hit detection hardly, you seem tot ake damage without realizing it, and it seems that 4 or so shots will kill you on medium, that seems way way too low imo. If you just jump out once and don't kill everyone int eh room, you will die.

Also painkillers seem really really hard to come by, even when you search (which is hard, at least in the first few levels as it all seems "timed" and if you wait around you fail things.

Also the crosshair, maybe it's my eyesight getting worse with age but man, in some firefights it's a PITA to see where you're shooting. I hate how your crosshairs disappear when you aren't shooting/aiming and then you have to constnatly reorient yourself to them, I wish there was an option to turn crosshairs on and keep them on, not have them constnatly go on/off (I'm talking about in-game, not during cutscenes).

Also is it just me, or is right mouse button aiming a bit finnicky? It seems to just randomly snap out of aiming even when you're holding it down, especially on the helicopter level near the start, i'd be shooting and then bam, it zooms back out like i'm not aiming when I am, so annoying.

However apart from those minor things I'm having fun with it. The gunplay, the graphics, are all great and man, the damage model is brutal. PErhaps not soldier of fortune brutal but it's up there.

Are those shots with FXAA and MSAA like the previous screenshot showed? Cause it isn't working right, if so.

yup 4X MSAA and FXAA Very High...game doesn't look like high end DX11 maybe because of the stylistic graphics or something else (especially when enabling Bullet Time)

the Fraps counter works for me...the controls definitely take some getting used to...I had to rearrange a few of the important keyboard controls

Agree with almost everything here, and yes, the other Max Payne games were just as challenging on the "normal" difficulty setting, at least I thought so. I'm also noticing a lot of hate on the controls, especially on the steam forums, but I find them great.

After re-installing GFWL and then restarting I have finally gotten the game to start, and have made my way to Chapter 2, the Soccer stadium.

I'm having some issues however, not sure if anyone's familiar with them: it's only recognizing 512MB memory for my graphics card, and any attempt to jack up the setting is futile. I've tried the launch options like the no restrictions one, and the memory one, but it's to no avail. I can easily handle everything on max, and I'm running with everything on "high" at the moment, buttery smooth. I'm assuming that it's NOT running off my integrated Ivy Bridge HD4000 since it's too smooth, but for some reason 512MB is all that I'm getting to work with, which isn't anything once textures go to Very High (592MB if I recall at that point).

Other than that, the game looks and sounds great, and the gameplay is incredible. Not sure if it was worth staying up until 3:20 for, but nevertheless, it's Friday at least.

Cagey, get this game. NOW.

Can anyone confirm how much space it takes once installed?is it really 30GB?

My 5850 doesnt even make the recommend specs....

The graphics better blow my mind,

Havent u seen the screenshots?it can't.....anyway people are sating it runs good,it should as its not really top tech graphics.

VERY surprised at how well it runs.

GTX480, q9550 3.7ghz. 2560x1600. EVERYTHING at max except MSAA (who needs it with FXAA on), I'm getting 40-60fps.

WTF ROCKSTAR.

Well good. Sounds like they made a pc game after all. Still not getting it until it goes on sale but for the fans out there who already bought it i am glad it doesn't disappoint.

I'm only an hour in but the presentation + gunplay is fucking great. I'm so happy to see the GTA 4 animation system evolved and implemented in a shooter.

The music is so classic, and they definitely kept the classic max payne personality.

My thoughts exactly. This is the best game I've played in a while. It's top draw, everything, just awesome. Max is just how I'd imagine him after the first 2 games.

The only major issue I see with the game is the story. It's just not as good as the first two games. I don't really think this is Rockstar's fault entirely though. 2 wrapped up everything that needed to be wrapped up so Rockstar pretty much had to create a new story from the ground up and it simply lacks the emotional attachment. They really couldn't find some way to continue 2's story without it feeling forced and cheap and it's not like MP3's story is bad; it shows a very nice progression from GTAIV's horrible, inconsistent story and proves Rockstar is capable of telling a well done narrative.

I can't argue with the flawlessness of the animations, the gunplay, and performance.

My issue is that it took a considerable amount of my 'morning' (1-3AM) to get it up and running. Had to reinstall the social media garbage, then reinstall GFWL, then mess with other crap, finally restarting my computer. Of those things, I have no idea which one fixed it, but the game runs now, albeit ONLY from the steam executable in the Library. The .exe in the root folder does NOT work at all, crashes the game as soon as the white text/black background appear.

The only other pressing matter that comes to mind is the fact that it's only recognizing my memory @ 512MB. For anyone else having memory related issues (read, video memory), changing the graphics XML in the documents/rockstargames/max payne 3 folder with an editor like notepad works very well, but doesn't solve my issues personally, entirely. No DX11 or MSAA for me. Rather disappointing, but the game runs/plays great so I really won't think anything of it for now.

took around 2 hours to complete the pre-load with my 30 Mbps FiOS connection...feel sorry for those that have to download this beast with a slower connection

Physical was the only way for me to even consider this. 2.5Mbps under optimal conditions just wasn't going to cut it to say nothing about when Steam servers are loaded down with demand and the rest of the nonsense. NO way I'd even consider digital here.

I only get MAYBE 2.0Mbps on a good day, but was hitting 2.2-2.4 all night, finished in 3 or so hours I believe. Had to server hop though to get the stable speed. I was dead set on a boxed copy earlier in the day.

Started the DL before I went to work, it was steady at 1.8-2.5mb for the 30 minutes I stuck around. Had I been off today though, prolly woulda picked up a box instead.

OMW to the bank to transfer some funds to the internet spending account. Ha ha knew I should have preordered!

I always get confused between Megabits and Bytes. Usually the network speeds are expressed in megabits, so 3 Mbps equals out to be a download speed of around 400 kilobytes per second.

But in your case to download in 3 hours would indicate bytes, since for Comcast users 25 gb probably is going to set off some alarms with your download caps.

I haven't hit a download cap to be honest in a LONG time, and I download a lot of stuff off iTunes and Steam.

Isn't there a daily cap? No clue. I have Cox.

Well, considering I downloaded about a gig of music yesterday from iTunes, and then the 29 gigs for Max Payne 3, all while peaking at 2.8 megs a sec, I don't think so haha.

I love the bullet time aspects of the game...Rockstar really nailed the mechanics of the overall gameplay...my only complaint is that I don't like the way that you are on a clock and everything needs to be done reasonably quick...you can't just spend time exploring your surroundings as you always get a warning to keep moving and if you ignore it you die

the game reminds me of the TV show '24'...with Max as the Jack Bauer character

For Comcast? Not as far as I've ever heard. There's a 250 GB monthly cap but they are soon changing that to 300 GB supposedly. Right now in the transition phase there might even be no cap.

I hate that shit.

Those aren't the....Oh whatever, I give up.

Right? After the 100th time?

Yes, folks you're going to need 3 GTX 690, a 64 core CPU, and 128 GB of DDR3 RAM to run this game. And 100GB of hard drive space minimum.

Hi Mr. Trainer, how are you doing today? That's some lame shit right there. For me that sort of thing is practically a game killer.

Few spoilerless screens

One thing I HATED about Dead Rising 2...finish mission/get to X before time runs out or RESTART.

^^^ @Laffles: Is that maxed out? Textures are not overly impressive for a 30 GB install IMO based on those screens.

for some reason the screenshots don't do a good job of showing the graphics quality...the game is by no means a DX11 showcase but it actually looks better in motion

it is maxed out..

What made this game 30gb is the cut-scenes, a lot of them aren't done in the games engine, and are 1080p instead of the horrible blocky 480+p that we get usually (like deus ex for example) 1080p video is large in filesize no matter how you try and compress it

The textures are still nice though imo, i mean they could be worse, they are 4x larger than the consoles, and I've seen much worse textures in PC exlusives so I'm not complaining

Yeah not a big fan of the screenshots (in general that is, although that first one in the office looks absolutely stunning). Seeing the game in motion is truly a sight. It just performs so fluid and the little details really tend to stick out when bullets are flying everywhere.

Edit: Also is it just me, or is his left arm in the top picture in an EXCRUCIATING position? The fore-arm that is.

How's the A.I.? If a guy is shooting at you from behind cover, will he move around the room and run towards you or will he just keep popping out from behind his cover until you shoot him or rush him?
