Well since noone had made a thread about this, i feel like asking what are you guys opinion about EA's new signs for Origin:
Robot Entertainment,
CD Projekt RED,
Freebird Games,
Recoil Games,
Autumn Games,
1C Company,
Inxile Entertainment,
Paradox Interactive,
Core Learning,
and N3V Games

Personally i have mixed feelings, mainly because until they do a proper separation between forums and game accounts plus their policies i feel queazy about putting too many eggs in the Origin basket, specially not looking forward to a "The Witcher 3" Origin exclusive (but i understand that CD Projekt needs to protect their own assets and this beats the extortion schemes)

I actually use Origin for BF3 and NFS:Run. So far haven't had any issues with it. I was going to get SWTOR for it, but got a retail copy instead. Once it gets more features I think it'll be a good companion to Steam. Though, I must admit that I still buy most of my Origin games off of Amazon when they are on sale.

Origin ....Steam...

Same fucking thing. One is by a company beloved by the gaming community and could wrap there own shit in tin foil and stamp "HL3" on it and sell millions. The other is reviled by the PC gaming community and has been for ages.

Whoever sells it the cheapest will get my business. And if they bloat it up with DRM then I'll deal with it the same way I always have.

Good for EA. One of the few devs that still care for the PC world.

Origin is a great app. And offers features steam doesn't have yet. Whoever has cheapest games gets my business too.

Well they are both DRM's (talking about Origin and Steam), my real problem is that thing of the "banned in forums = banned from all your games!" plus the total lack of banning guidelines from a couple community managers.

Seen enough of those stories of banning with no wrongdoing to make me not to trust them all that much. And since their public stance about it changes every time they are asked about it, well, makes me wary.

Still it could all be fixed with that simple separation "forums are forums, games are games, and each game is it's own ecosystem!". So that if you get a 72H ban because you said a expletive mid some online match, it won't cut you off from your entire game library for the same 72H's.

I won't be buying Witcher 3, and plan on announcing my displeasure on the CD Projekt forums, it needs to be on Steam too.

I refuse to support Origin in any way, shape, or form, untill it removes the malware, and EA changes it's policies banning your account for things you say on their forum.

I don't see anything saying they're gonna be exclusively on Origin, especially since CDP goes through GOG and Steam as well.

This is what gamers should want, competition. Now you can look at Steam and see TW3 as overpriced, but can turn around and see if EA has it less overpriced.

Good. The bans have been shameful but since they account for a fraction of a percent of the userbase - and I remember similar issues with things like Steam - I don't feel it to be a reason to boycott them for that. As far as buying things goes I'll probably just stick with amazon or play.com or somewhere that gives me more for less. As ever.

I'd rather give my money to Steam, even at full price, over the thieves over at EA.

I'd rather buy Witcher 3 off GoG.com as I did with Witcher 1 and 2.

Right, you have a good time with that now...

The rest of us will choose who to buy from based on facts, not irrationality.

Geeze you just love to whinge, don't you? There's nothing to suggest that you can't still do that, its just now people who don't have their balls in Valve's vice have an option to get the game from a different source if they so desire. But you go on and continue to be outraged over nothing.

Interesting that they're bringing some of the more PC-friendly developers into the fold.

I'm all for it. There are a lot of names on that list that deserve every ounce of success they get.

What? only way to play Witcher 3 is through Origin client? Is this fact of speculation?

What makes you think TW3 will be Origin only? Crazy talk and if it were exclusive to anywhere its be GoG.

EA has nothing to do with TW franchise, unless they are publishing the 360 variant.

Pure speculation on behalf of the OP and Fail, there's nothing to suggest that they'll be moving to Origin exclusively. Before these partnerships, they also signed up as "partners" THQ, Warner Brothers and Capcom, yet Saints Row 3 is a THQ game available on both Steam and Origin... so I don't see why these new partners would be exclusive either. As far as I can see, all it means is they will sell their games on Origin, not that they'll be exclusive to Origin.

The Witcher 3, its dev team, and its publisher wouldn't sign an Origin exclusive deal unless they shut down or sold GoG.

Also, I will probably only use Origin with EA games (i.e., when it's required).

Why? If you're already using it for EA games, why not get other games on it as well?

Personally I will just buy from whoever is cheapest and/or offers the best deals, be it Steam, Origin, GOG, GMG, whatever. There was a time where I wanted to keep my library together, but after the shit pricing on Steam for certain games that I wanted to buy, I've given up on that.

EA is not a dev, and I wouldn't say they are any better than other publishing companies when it comes to PC gaming. Late texture patch for PC version and stuff like that hardly shows that they care all that much ;)

Well, let's put it this way...I'll choose Steam over it every time. But if it's not on Steam, Origin is fine as a second choice I guess.

So far I'm doing pretty good keeping 95% of my titles either Steam or (now) Origin.

Origin cheaper? In Australia? Or have you immigrated to another country Tudz?

I said I'd buy from whoever is cheapest, unlikely that'll ever be Origin, but who knows. :p Over Christmas they actually had BF3 cheaper than retail stores... which isn't saying much.

Yeah....I think it will be a cold day in hell before Origin offers reasonable prices for Australians

Either hard copy with no additional software requirements, OR steam version, otherwise no sale.

It's
That
Simple.

I think the more worrying problem is other online retailers increasing prices to match Origin. Steam already has Saints Row 3 for $90, matching Origin, and Medal of Honor for $60, exceeding Origin's price.

Since its the publishers which set prices on the digital distribution platforms it means we're unlikely to see significant price differences between the platforms, Origin being an alternative to steam isn't going to drive down prices like some people seem to think it will.

It's been cheaper for years now to buy games at retail and then activate keys on steam, there are some online stores who will sell you a physical copy and send you the key immediately to activate on steam, usually beating their prices by a wide margin, that will likely continue to be the cheapest way to get these sorts of games.

defiant and I are discussing Australia more than anything else, which has wildly varying online prices thanks to regional pricing that has crept into some, but not all, digital distributors. You can buy SR3 on Steam or Origin for $90, or GMG for $40.

Honestly, it was regional pricing that drove me to start buying on Steam, for the simple reason Steam DIDN'T have regional pricing so was vastly cheaper than retail stores. Now that Steam has got regional pricing and is often more expensive than retail, even during sales you often see games cheaper in retail stores than on Steam (I bought Skyrim cheaper at retail than it was 33% off at the Steam Christmas sale), Steam as a purchasing center has lost its shine to me, and I'm back to buying games through other sources.

I wonder how buying Steamworks titles on Origin works. I noticed Saints Row 3 and Lord of the Rings on there. Both are steamworks games. Did they just remove the Steam DRM?

No idea, however there are games that are only Steamworks if you buy them through Steam, so maybe this is the same? It doesn't say anything on Origin about it requiring Steam.

This is not that dissimilar to the UK pricing, we don't have the same high prices that Aus have, but if you convert dollars into euros or english pounds we're still getting a bad deal compared to the americans, even with preoder 10% discounts etc, retail is often no better at release you need to find good deals.

The best place is online retail stores like play.com who will beat retails store prices at launch and who will often send you a steam key to activate online before they even ship the game.

Dion is an ea shill and origin apoligist. Nothing they do is wrong and their shit is just as shiny to him as Valves is to some on here.

Glad to see them adding third party titles but until they can seperate forum policing from their game catalog i'm going to buy as few games as possible from them.

Funnt thing is i dont use any forums except a couple independent sites, but i still cant support that practice.

I'm kinda on the fence about the whole forum banning=game catalog banning. On one hand I like it, if you can't behave on the forums while interacting with others odds are you sure as hell won't in game either and we don't need that shit in game. But on the other hand I also think that a forum account should be separate from a game account.

Honestly though they should at least still allow you to play the single player aspect of your games and only ban you from MP for a specified amount of time, depending on the severity of the offense.

I couldn't agree more with everything you said. I have no beef with people using origin, I just don't like it when they force everyone to use it. I'm looking at you BF3.

Those games aren't. Retail copies require steam. I bought LOTR on GMG and had to activate it in Steam to install. It doesn't say anywhere on Origin that Steam is required, and really, I don't see the logic in happening. Makes me wonder if they completely changed the DRM scheme just to make it available on Origin.

I don't like it when I'm forced to use Steam on games, either, especially on games that don't even come from Valve.

Those are a choice made solely by each individual publisher to use Steamworks. Steamworks does provide many benefits for free, and its especially useful for smaller devs who cannot afford expensive DRM solutions or anti cheating solutions.

But anyway, I think the more important point is that just because certain gaming company choose to use Steamworks, it doesn't mean everyone else should follow suit. There's no reason to agree to EA using BF3 to pimp out Origin.

In a perfect world, all games will be like those on GOG. No DRM, free to use anytime anywhere. But in reality, least we could do is hope some still do, rather than everyone requiring some extra software just to run it.
