Transformer Prime, when and how much?

Just got my prime from BB last night. Packaging was definitely sketch since it came in a simple slightly padded sleeve from UPS. Fortunately there's no sign of any physical damage to the box or the tablet.

Going to wait until the 12th before adding a ton of apps.

Why? Give that thing a proper shakedown, man....

Did you get rid of it? My Iconia has a lousy GPS in it. I was hoping to get a Prime and was counting on it having a good GPS chip. Looks like I will be canceling my pre-order for the Prime.

Some have claimed at the good GPS in the Transformer 1 was due to it having a plastic back whereas the Transformer 2 has a metal back and, hence, a crappy GPS. This would seem to be true.

Sorry, Yes I did sell it a few months ago in anticipation of the Prime. But I think I'll wait on getting another tablet till the rest of the high end SOC makers reach the tablet market as well.

The GPS function while nice wasn't my purchase decision. Its a nice thing to have but doesn't break the device for me. Also good catch on the plastic/metal plates.

I can never find a TFP online or near me locally, I get the auto-notifies, like from newegg and am too late and in local stores the sales reps are we just sold are last one a few hours ago and the demo floor model was sold too

Ah! Well I guess I could wait for other tegra 3 tablets to come into market, but I Asus products have always been good to me.

EDIT: Bestbuy has them in stock currently for delivery, while I have heard BB's shipping methods have been in suspect, I rolled the dice with them and on getting my first tablet. I hope I made the right choice.

It's funny. I have a tablet, and no dock, while my co-worker has two docks and no tablets.

Oh well. At least my Gray 64GB unit wasn't delayed until Q2 like some sites are reporting.

Question for those that have it: Does the Glowball app work for you?

Followup question for those that answer yes and have a lot of time on their hands: Does it still work if you encrypt your tablet?

A lot of places are getting up to 100 tablets of each color and storage capacity and 100 docks in each color next week. Amazon said they were getting 96.

So if you really want any of these watch Nowinstock.com or websites or in stores.

Is the dock really worth it? I am on the fence, I am not concerned about the extra flash memory expansion the dock provides.

Gambling on Best Buy's shipping. Mine has a tracking number generated, should be in next week. Fingers crossed!

Mine is shipping to Best Buy where I will go pick it up. If the box is damaged, it won't leave the store.

Been browsing and people are still talking about converting their MKV's into "Transformer Prime format" :(

I've been doing searches on Transformer Prime performs on video playback, i figured they'll just use some sort of player like DICE or Mobo. But every search i've done has people telling how to re-encode instead.

I dont understand tablets. Why do people want to spend so much money on something with such amazing amount of limitations. Just curious. My mom is the same way with these tablets sigh ....

You don't have to understand tablets and you don't need to buy one....

Do you have a smartphone?

I understand tablets, I just dont understand the pricing? There is no question what they can bring to their target markets. It's just the prices people are willing to pay are well... breathtaking when you consider the limitations tablets still have.

Do you have a smartphone?

Yes but a Smart Phone can do 3g/4g Internet on the Go, Phone calls without being tethered to Skype like Apps, GPS, mobile Tethering, Fitness such as wireless heart rate monitor, watch movies on the Airplane, call 911 when your butt is hurt, and a number of other things.

Tablets are just well.... Internet surfing and maybe watching a video or something. About it. And the prices are excruciatingly high compared to a Smart phone which is so much more capable.

But hey I just made that comment when I seen the price of this Transformer tablet and was shell shocked at what people are willing to pay for them.

More power to those who want them. There is NOTHING wrong with that at all. I guess I didn't even need to comment on it.

My bad. But hey they do seem to be getting better with each generation.

I just couldn't justify the price of 500-1000 for a tablet unless it had at minimum a 4G radio and a OLED screen.

At $1000 you're now well within the price range of Windows tablets and they have a lot of capability beyond anything costing $500. I have 4G on my Windows tablets via a USB modem. OLED would be a debatable plus.

You pretty much have the grasp of it. When tablets first came out, i thought they were just luxury devices. Now that i've owned two tablets, my opinion of them hasn't changed. Anything you can do on a tablet, you can also do on your phone. I can play videos, read PDFs, do word processing and play games on my phone as well. It's just a matter of you paying for the convenience of a bigger screen and more powerful CPU, which you can relate if you regularly upgrade your PC.

Regarding the price. There's always a hefty price when you micronize computers.

Here's the full spectrum from my observation:
Desktops = Cheap and Powerful
Laptops = Expensive and Moderately Powerful
Netbooks = Cheap and Decently Capable
Tablets = Expensive and Minimalistic 7-10"
Phones = Expensive and Minimalistic 4" (An unlocked mid range smartphone is as expensive as a mid range Netbook if you haven't noticed)

As laptops got smaller, they got more expensive (See CULV subnotebooks, they're smaller than netbooks even). Netbooks broke this pattern by removing many of the components that weren't essential but there comes a point where micronizing even a netbook gets more expensive. x86 tablets, which are on par with netbooks, are $1,000. To hammer the price back down they needed to cripple the PC even further. Those are the ARM tablets.

So now you have the full spectrum as before. Cheap, Powerful, Immobile -> Expensive, Weak, Portable.

PS: To expand my comment on the netbook. My current netbook is more powerful than the desktop i used for 3D rendering some years ago. And yes, i actually do 3D rendering and programming on it now.

Right on. Makes sense. But my mother kills me. She has an iPad 1 and 2 and wants an android tablet but somehow she freaking manages to use all 3 at the same time? I am dumbfound lol

This definition of tablets though is completely iPad driven however. These devices are much older. Your phone probably doesn't have a Wacom pen digitizer (the Galaxy Note does however) or is able to transcode audio and video or do your 3D rendering. Tablet though seems to have become synonymous with ARM mobile OS device instead of just referring to form factor. One reason why Apple does do well, it's able to define terms of devices that it didn't invent that have existed for many years before it had any similar.

Makes sense ... not! haha.

Tablets are a great luxury device. They are managable in expense and do everything you would expect of a luxury device. But loading up on these devices makes little. I've always thought about putting one device in every room but its so unfeasable.

None of that make sense. You said you didn't understand tablets...now you're shifting to you don't understand pricing? Small & light usually means higher prices. Tablets are more mobile than laptops. Just look at light-weight laptops for your model. Laptops still have a role, however, but in my experience it is minimal (comparatively, but not to the extent that I won't have one).

Tablets are more than that if you open your mind and try....I don't ever watch movies on mine because I have better ways to do that, but I do watch youtube and other forms of media...and I do presentations on them all the time. I study and read on mine...and don't tell me that you can do any serious study and reading on a phone...I also use mine for gps-based nav...that works way better than any phone or dedicated gps device. My cell phone cost me $200 plus $85 x 24 = $2240 (rough, as my plan is a bit more than $85/month). Or $1120/year. My iPad cost $730. The prime will be another $500. I rarely make calls on my phone, so it is basically in case of emergencies, travel, and to make sure I don't miss important emails (and frankly, that rarely happens -- this has turned out to be just a convenience that I'm thinking I don't need). But anything I do on my phone can be done better on my tablet (with the obviously exception of putting it in my pocket). And you talk about being tethered...dude you are going to be tethered to one thing or another, be it skype or the phone app on your smartphone. All that stuff you talk about doing on a phone can be done on a tablet, but better. I read Kindle books, PDFs, news, etc. Games are better on a tablet, period.

I never understand why some people stick their heads into a conversation when they only want to say I think all of you people are idiots. Seems as if you could find better things to do if you really feel that way. I suspect you really meant that you find phones are better and think tablets are just not so hot...which, btw, is fine. That's why I said you can just ignore tablets...different strokes. I, frankly, like tablets. I think all the creative software development going on today is on tablets (phone too, but less useful). Just get an iPad to see what I mean. I can't remember the last time I saw a really cool Windows program that I just had to have...and usually they cost a fortune....but tablet apps are highly usable because of the larger screen and are comparatively inexpensive, too. I still see the value in Windows tablets, though, just for the fact that I am strongly tied to Windows productivity programs like Office and such. Also, to engineering and scientific programs like Matlab and Mathematica and a few special purpose programs. So I see myself tied to windows until I die, but I'll also embrace the iOS and Android devices as well. Kids (college age, I mean) today are mobile-minded, so if you want to meet them where they are, you need to be where they are.

My bad. But hey they do seem to be getting better with each generation.

I don't see the point of having a 4G radio if you are just going to be capped and charged if you use it beyond some amount. That seems silly to me.

Frankly, I'm been giving some consideration to getting a portable hotspot device that runs on 3G and tethering my tablet to it (when needed). Then, I'd just get skype or google voice and buy minutes (if appropriate)..then I used this whenever I'm out of wifi range (which, is not significantly that much). And then just get rid of the smart phone altogether. I bet I'd save money on a SP plan with minutes & data....because I really don't need to make many phone calls at all. I rarely really need to use data on 3G, so just using it with Skype during travel and for emergency would likely work. I'd have to check on the plan prices of those hotspot devices, though, they might be priced to force me to a phone....just like carriers.

It's a damn shame if you ask me...but the MSes and Intels are just asleep at the helm..but the good news is that they will wake up or fade from the scene.

Yeah, it's hard to call Microsoft's tablet strategy before Windows 8 anything more than a half-hearted attempt. Windows 8 however is all in, for some people too all in because of Metro on the desktop. Metro on tablets and the desktop really is Microsoft's only chance of success at this point on tablets I believe and the right call. We should know in about a year to 18 months.

For the wait I'm going through, the secretary for Asus' CEO better deliver it by hand and offer me a happy ending.

I must ask how much of your life did you waste typing all that stuff that really no one is going to read. I read it but wow. I came in here, made a statement, got yelled at by you. I was very humble about it and other people answered questions that was between the lines I didnt get. I accepted that and moved on. I realized something new that I didnt before popping my head in this conversation.

And then you came back on the rampage with all your big wall of text and I am still humble and I appreciate the positive responses from other members.

Some people don't see eye to eye. Personally, since I got my HTC Titan, I no longer use my Transformer TF101. It's primary "large screen" use, Netflix, is handled well by the Titan.

Of course, someone might feel the need to tell me the Titan is too small for optimal porn viewing, or whatever, but then try to act like a smartass and quib about personal tastes being none of their business (that's typically how these "I do you do this that way" arguements end up, before being ignored by both sides).

How is 1200x1020 "1080p"?

Yeah, you're right. I let you troll me.

And still you persist.

to other people...
I went to verzon to specifically look at tablets yesterday and wow they are really much better than known them to be long ago. They have 4g LTE Android powered tablets with a lot of cool features. Almost makes me want to reconsider my position a little more in the near future for super portability.
