Skyrim impressions

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "without enchantments." But basically if you wear all 4 armor pieces, each armor piece adds a certain amount of hidden AR (armor rating), you hit a damage reduction cap of 80% at 567.

So basically you only need to improve your armor and take enough armor perks to hit that AR, with anything higher having no benefits. You don't need to enchant the armor you craft itself.

For more detail - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Armor_Rating

Also improving armor adds a set amount of AR based on skills/perks, it is not a percentage based improvement. So if you have the same skill and perks, improving a scaled armor chest piece and a daedric chest piece add the same amount of AR. The base AR of the item doesn't matter in terms of how much AR is added from improvement. Your armor skill/perks though increases the end AR gap though.

Also ~83 AR is equal to 10% damage reduction.

Thanks. I wonder why they didn't make that more overt? Like, why the hidden AR.

Son of a ... I've been using a chinese PS3 controller emulator called MotionInJoy to use my old ps3 controller in Skyrim. It decided to give me a 'page not found' error when I launched it this morning. I'm not the only one, apparently. So I tried a fan-made 'offline version', which was worthless. So I uninstalled it. Now I can't even use my mouse in Skyrim. At the menu, the cursor just sits unmoveable. Awesome. Any fix to get my mouse working at least? Yes, it's plugged in and on. Thanks.

if i leave my wireless X360 controller turned on (and paired with the receiver) when i start Skyrim it defaults to using that and i can't use my mouse at the main menu. turning it off makes the mouse active again. are you leaving your PS3 controller on when you start Skyrim?

It's been unplugged and I removed all the drivers. The emulator not working was irritating enough, now I'm fuming. Too many goddamn workarounds here.

without giving anything away can someone tell me if the Eye of Magnus College of Winterhold quest is related to the main quest...seems interesting so far

This is a thieves guild quest, an early one. I kicked the difficulty up to Expert yesterday because the game was too easy. However, I sneaked into Goldenglow Estates via the sewers and once I go topside the mercenaries are all over me like a pitbull on a poodle. During the quest description from Mercer and Brynjolf, they warned me that these mercenaries are tough killers. Is it the case that they are just a difficulty spike in the scheme of things, or is it a sign that I should go back down to Adept? I don't know if I am supposed to do this job silently or not. My guess would be no, because once I was out of the sewers I essentially just walked around the corner and was in a melee. There were three archers pegging Lydia and I with infra-red vision at night from across a bridge. I killed the first melee attacker and headed for the archers, but then a few more skirmishers engaged Lydia while I was running for the bridge. They pretty much passed her around like a peace pipe because all I could hear was her getting hit and then "I submit! Victory is yours!" followed by a death cry... Any tips on this challenge? Thanks.

Nope not part of the main(dragon) one.

Side note. Can one do the Collage quests with minimal magic used(meaning can my pure assissian/tank/BAMF magic less elf do them)?

Okay, I rolled back to Adept difficulty and I'm getting reamed. REAMED, I say! I'm not using any difficulty mods. I'm just across the lake from the Goldenglow Estate getting thunderslapped by bandits bow. Their bows and arrows are like railguns. Lydia died on me, and I am out of health potions. And that was after my BEST attempt...

Yes, there is only two times you have to cast an offensive damage spell, and it doesn't matter what your skill in it is.

Are you going stealth like your supposed to or full assault? I hit both objectives, including robbing the house blind with no problems on master and in stealth mode.

I started the 3 hives on fire by swimming until I was behind the wall then sneaking around the wall, smacked the first 2 with a torch and took off. Before I was even back into the water the 3rd one was burning. I headed back to the back door and after burning around 40 picks(only had a LP of 15 or 20 at that point) I was in and was able to sneak around with very little problems by listening to what was going on and abusing the 3rd person view. I didn't know about the sewer entrance until I left through it.

Sweet. Soon as I clear up some of the 30 odd misc quests I'll head to the college and get mah skoolin on :p

I just wanted to commend all the [H] forum members who have been so responsible about hiding their spoilers. I'm pretty fussy about wanting to learn about stuff in-game and not on forums, so that typically means I have to avoid forums altogether. Not the case on this board, and it's a wonderful thing.

Thank you guys.

I was high level when I finally did this quest, I think I had +44% sneak on about 3 pieces of apparel and 100 sneak skill, so i could literally just sneak past all of them and not confront anyone, I think thats how the thieves guild missions are supposed to go, confrontation = bad

I played this on normal. A dragon decided to attack then and land in the middle of the estate and killed some of the Mercs for me. I just went in and killed everyone and the dragon. No penalty for not being sneaky there, I tried but the dragon kinda ruined it. Oh well

I guess I'll go back when I have more health potions then. But the bow and arrow damage is stupid high.

Hahaha fucking rawr!

Was showing my 17 year old brother in law how easy the dragons are for me. My one hand attack still is at 80 or so(I'll look next time I'm playing) and I'm using a ebony sword smithed up to the Legendary level.

Find a sleeping elder dragon and pop a one hand attack and sneak potion and sneak up on his ass.

Elder dragons are normal a 15-20 hit kill for me. Dropped his punk ass in 3 hits. :D

The dragon difficulty is a bit nerfed in my eyes: I run head-first into a dragon fight, I run tail-between my legs from a troll. I think they should bump the dragon 'title' up on notch, I am currently fighting blood-dragons, but I think I should be fighting elder dragons.

See they have always been easy for me. Closest I have been to death with one was when some jackass was shooting me with a frost spell. It's always been under 30 normal(meaning no power hits) for them.

Hell Shadowmare even had one nearly killed by him self.

This game gets funnier every day. Today I was sneaking around a cave and caught the attention of a necromancer.

The necromancer walks to an opening to look for me, I see he appears to have resurrected something and I'm thinking, "OH GOD HERE COMES THE NECROMANCER AND HE BROUGHT SOMETHING WITH HIM! IT'S A... a goat?"

That goat just stands there all ghostly like, "I'm a damn goat, wtf do you want me to do?" while I shot arrows into the necromancer.

Only problem with buffing dragons too much is that dragons are borderline necessary to kill, while I haven't had to touch a troll/giant/mammoth and I'd say I'm at least 10 hours into the main quest, if not more. I do wish the dragon fights felt more challenging and more important.

Was Alduin really friggen tough when you fight him on the throat of the world (dont know if you fight him again, I would assume you do). I had newly crafted and improved daedric maces with probably 120-140 dmg each, so I almost 2 rounded him with the big duel wield attack, but in that time he almost fried me and I barely hit the inventory button in time to down some hp pots, and I think I had at least 30% magic resist, if not like 50%. Anyways, way harder than other dragons I thought

lol, that is pretty funny :)

Looks like you can duel wield pick axes to mine after all, you just have to attack the ore rather than pressing 'E'... no joke. Elemental Fury will make your mining even faster. I only tried because I heard there might be some bug with mining even after the ore is depleted (even when the ore added messages stop going away). Bug didn't work for me though.

i was hoping there would be an alteration spell to pick locks but don't see one.

My mage is even more of a one-shot killer than my archer/assassin... Dual-casting lightning bolt is brutal and instant. Are there any negatives to wearing armor? I'm just using the destruction robes and a hood but i just found it that a bracer can be worn underneath those (and i've been barefoot...)

What level are you and what difficulty? Sounds like you are still a low level.

I have yet to find anyone who thinks destruction magic is powerful once one hits level ~30+. Right now, my mage can barely kill anything at level 35 using pure destruction magic and this is only on expert. Sure, I can use exploits to make the game super easy but then why even play the game? On the other hand, my two Dremora Lords wipe everything out with ease (dragon priests, dragons, giants, etc.).

I'm at level 34 and I think Destruction magic is pretty powerful. Thunderbolt does 90 damage per strike. That combined with a Daedric sword that has a 25pt fire damage enchantment works well for most enemies save for the bigger bosses. But it balances out well. Doesn't make things feel too easy or too hard.

I combined Destruction (100), with infinite mana from enchanting, as well as my one-handers and my one-handed still did at least 3 times more damage than my Lightning spells, both trees "fully" perked.

At this point it's safe to say Archery is the most overpowered direct damage in the game (Conjuration might be better) especially when combined with Sneak.
Destruction is quite possibly the worst dps in the entire game, certainly the worst when compared to other things like 1H/2H/Archery.

A full "Mage" class is probably the hardest thing to play in the game, especially as you progress and on harder difficulties. The higher you level-up, the worse the destruction spells get, in relation to your enemies' strength and in comparison to other weapon types. In other words, the higher you level-up as a Mage, the worse Mages get. I think it's strictly due to the fact that you can't raise your spells' damage via smithing/enchanting, like normal weapons. :|

For conjuration are you talking about bound weapons.... and do those level with you?

About destruction agreed, totally nerfed. but..... you can always hit the console ~
and use
player.setav DestructionPowerMod #

as you level up, you can increase that number value.

So your telling me that Mages in this game are useless? im trying to level up my character as a Mage :( Im level 11. Can i revert and start working on my melee weapons instead?

Don't believe that. I have a level 45 mage decked out in Daedric armor and he is a tank. Nothing kills him and he kills everything in a few seconds. Mages are really fun.

Just found this crawling the web this AM. Its from gaming.stackexchange.com

I just discovered how to force Lydia wear light armor on the PC. Open the console by pressing ~ then click on lydia to target her and type: forceav lightarmor 120

That will give her a light armor skill of 100 and she will start wearing any light armor you give her like glass etc... if she still wearing steel then type "removeallitems" on console before giving her the armor you want her to equip

I'm trying to get an unusual gem appraised in Rift. But the guy I'm supposed to talk to to do so won't talk to me. He says "he's done with me" because I won't steal something. Any other way to get it appraised or force him forget previous interaction via console?

you gotta join the thieves guild to get it appraised, which mean you have to do the first quest in their line.

I'm wondering how the lock picking works. I dont have any perks in it. I can lock pick a novice one easy, but anything abover novice (like adept or expert) the lock will not turn at all (the A & D keys). The lock pick will turn, but I can not do anything in terms of rotating the lock itself. Is this normal??

got boring fast, should of made it a mmorpg

Thing is I was getting kind of bored with MMO's. The landscape and story never changes because 10,000 people have to be able to experience it at the same time and honestly the online community has really changed over the last 5 years. Its alot different then the days of Ultima Online in terms of the crowd. So I was ready for a single player game again. Its lonely, but nerf isn't something I have to consider.

It just means the right spot is that much harder to find with low skill.
