Skyrim impressions

got boring fast, should of made it a mmorpg

I would have written the exact opposite: If it had been an MMO then by that very nature it would have been boring and I would have avoided it like the plague.

The 60 some odd hours I've put into this game somehow suggest something that, for me, has been quite far removed from boring, at least for me.

So your telling me that Mages in this game are useless? im trying to level up my character as a Mage :( Im level 11. Can i revert and start working on my melee weapons instead?

I'm playing as a mage using Destruction as my sole source of DPS, and according to all the herping and derping on the official forums, this is impossible. The forums are wrong.

The comparisons I've seen were all between Destruction and other character builds. and since Skyrim is a single player game, you will NEVER play against another of your characters. Alchemy/enchanting/smithing is exploitable and adds to DPS or damage reduction for archer and melee types, and because this exploit is completely overpowered, people claim that magic is broken.

There are two legit problems with magic: 1) Damage doesn't scale to your skill level, and 2) the master level spells aren't very useful. (Full disclosure: They don't *appear* to be very useful. My char's Destruction skill is 96 and I don't have those spells yet.)

I'm at level 36 or 37, rocking some sweet bathrobes of Destruction and wearing no armor other than some scale bracers of OMG lockpicking. The game is loads of fun because I can deal enough damage to put anything down quickly, but the lack of armor means I'm extremely vulnerable to screwups. I also have a high Sneak skill and use 5-6 of the shouts--usually only
Aura Whisper and Throw Voice

Early in the game I carried a 1H wep in case a mage got too close and I was out of mana, as well as some light armor that had a Destruction enhancement. I probably could have foregone this had I used more Conjuration and summoned atronachs as meatshields and DPS dealers, or else brought a companion along.

Word of caution: It's easy to bork your character if you don't keep your DPS skills up and the scaling surpasses your ability to deal damage. With that in mind, don't level unnecessary skills like alchemy and enchanting early in the game.

This is why I added the difficulty setting I am playing on. To those who are actually killing things "quickly" with destruction magic and are a decently high level, what difficulty is this on?

How do u level up destruction magic spells though? using perks?

Damage output is leveled through the perk system, and by learning new, more powerful spells. Buffs (potions, enchanted gear) only reduces the cost of casting spells and does not affect DPS.

I imagine just spamming destro spells for no apparent reason will do the trick

No, you have to damage something. Casting at a boulder won't level things up.

Default. Are you complaining that increasing the difficulty level increases the--difficulty? :p

I kill stuff very fast with my 45ish mage on the second hardest difficulty level (can't remember what that is called atm). I have the master level destro spells and they suck total ass; I almost never use them. Two of them instantly kill my companion, and the third one just isn't good enough to justify the time it takes to start casting it.

Incinerate + unrelenting force do a great job of dropping enemies quickly. If you throw in a firewall as well they go down even faster.

I'll crank up the difficulty to Master the next time I play and see how things go. I'm questing for new shouts so I should run into more high level mobs, but the last thing I did before logging last night was to craft a new set of Destruction gear and I don't expect to see anything other than longer fights.

Destruction spells need to be modded so I can damage myself.

I'm not complaining about anything. Default setting is quite easy so a destruction mage is definitely a viable option in that case.

That is expert difficulty, which is the same as I play at. I'll give incinerate a try again. In the past, I found it to be worse than fireball in most cases - no AOE, more magic usage, only 20 base damage increase.

Your sarcasm detector doesn't come with a tongue-in-cheek sensor, does it? ;)

Haven't played much since the patch... my dragons fly backwards...

Level 35 is where the destruction climaxes. It's all down hill from there. The forswarn will yawn at your fire spells when you get to the top levels. Fortunately the ice spear thing works better for them. Higher level necros will yawn at all your destruction spells though. But they do have that spell shield (and have higher reflexes to use it than you do). Destruction just doesn't feel powerful as you approach level 50. Blizzard is a joke except on goats and rabits or something. Firestorm would be cool if the cast delay wasn't so long.

^^ there are already mods out to fix some of these things with destruction magic that most people complain about. Just search "destruction" on skyrimnexus.com

Regardless, i will be waiting for enhanced hotkeys to play my mage again.

What really needs to happen though, is some sort of mod which tweaks the AI so that your atronarchs can't tank 5 out of 5 mobs. Some of them should think to themselves, "hey look there's a caster over there shooting us"

For enchanting I disenchanted a 50% regen robe. But when I applied the enchant to a piece of armor it was only 1% regen. Do I have to increase my skill level to get the full effect?

Also giving your companinion a conjure staff is cool, is a way to get around the max number of conjurations allowed :)

Is there a companion that I can either earn or hire for money that's more useful than Lydia? I'm a Redguard warrior. It's time for a new follower. Also, I found a stray dog a week or so ago near Rorikstead at an old stone altar. He followed me for a while until after a dragon fight in Morthal. I never found remains nor did I get a message that he left me. I just sadly concluded he had been killed. Then this week I went to Markarth and tried to buy a new dog from a dog trainer, his name was Vengeance. The trainer told me I already had an animal companion. Somehow the stray dog got bugged. Can I restore him to me somehow so I can send him home and take a new dog?

I think there is a console command to make a character appear next to you....or I think there is one to warp to a character.

You need to have your enchanting up to 100 and you need an appropriately sized soul gem. If you use a petty soul gem you're going to get a much worse enchant than you will if you use a grand soul gem filled with a grand soul. You can also get perks that boost certain enchants you put on your items. There are potions to make your enchanting even stronger still.

So I was wondering: is there a way to spawn items or NPCs at a location other than right where I'm at? The player.placeatme spawns stuff right there beside me. Is it possible to spawn stuff away from my character?

Goto magic->active effect->look for debuffs

to cure, use a shrine or cure disease potion.

Yeah the enchanting and the smithing seems to be overpowered, you can craft dragon bone armour, make it legendary then apply 2 enchantments to it, if you drink potions to improve enchanting it exceeds the normal max level, I got mine to +44% for archery damage per piece of armour.

I'm also sure that you can enchant apparel with +enchanting or +smithing? I know you can find items that have +enchanting on them so if you kit yourself out with that gear first and then drink an enchanting potion you can probably get your gear with even higher stats.

Apparently for mages the -mana enchantments stack, so 4x -25% means -100% and you get infinite mana basically.

reminds me a little of the glory that was morrowind alchemy, except not nearly as broken.

i did like killing the final boss of tribunal though by buying out all the alcohol in the entire city and chugging it all at once, effectively granting superhuman strength along with mental retardation.

Because you either have lycanthropy or vampirism. They're telling you you have a disease.

Ha...how do you get either of those? I've yet to encounter a werewolf or a vampire.

Also, everytime I walk by a guard in a new town, they often say "keep your hands to yourself, sneak thief!"

lol...how did they know I have sticky fingers?

Either your skill is high or you're wearing sneak/lockpicking/pickpocket gear. I think either apply since people occasionally and annoyingly tell me, "Don't think you can barter with me like a shopkeeper" and I don't normally go around wearing haggling gear.

Yes, but those two are the easiest to get, at least in my experience. Unless you've been walking through bear traps.

apparently i wouldn't notice a bear trap if it were glowing bright orange and made an audible "watch out!" sound. i walk through them all the damn time. you can get diseases from them?

That would be interesting.. Rockjoint = Tetanus?

Is it just me or do the quests get SUPER LAME after you've completed the main quests? For example, you have quests for groups like the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood but after you've completed their main story portions you get stuck with jobs like "kill this lumberjack" or "change the numbers at this shop". I've almost killed every lumberjack in Skyrim; I'm pretty sure some hippies are buddy-buddy with the Dark Brotherhood.

I've had it with Nord ruins and when I asked for work from someone I was given the same quest twice because I know for sure I killed that dragon once before and when I went to claim the bounty it was the same damn person!

Didn't Bethesda mention 'infinite quests' or something like that? You had to know it would be stupid stuff but, well, if that's what you assumed then you were absolutely right! If I see the dialog option to ask someone for jobs then I just ignore it and leave them.

I think I'm about done with anything eventful in the game.

Tried all the factions? Bard's college? Radiant quests are hit and miss. Sometimes they work out fairly well and sometimes not so much. Apparently most of the Companions quests (even parts of the final main quest) are radiant quests.

If they did mention "infinite quests" then they probably meant exactly what you're complaining about right now - and to expect anything different is pretty...I dunno...dumb? After beating all of the big or important quests what else would you imagine would happen? Bethesda isn't gonna provide us with free daily updates full of huge main quests and new content :p

Why is everybody asking me if I'm sick? Or "do you want to lay down"?

Did anyone say 'Hey baby, do you wanna lay down with me?"...

I've heard a number of weird random lines in Skyrim, but not that one yet! (joking)

So I walked into the College of Winterhold to report that I took care of a "disturbance", and then I randomly obtained a dragon soul. Out of absolutely fucking nowhere and for no reason. I was INSIDE the college about to talk to an NPC and all the sudden the "dragon soul obtained" music began to play and the crazy magical effect that you see while obtaining a dragon soul happened and before ya know it - I was 1 dragon soul richer.

What the fuck?
