Dark Souls Thread

For the love of god, if there was ever a game that needed an actual manual and not the 3 page grey scale bullshit they put in, it was this game. There were so many basic things I had to wiki. I still barely understand the humanity system. Sometimes that number is 00, but I've seen it get up to 06 with seemingly no rrhyme or reason.

Got killed by the gargoyles and shut it off for the night.

I'm a level 25 or 26 Knight with Master Key bonus. About 12 hours in. I've killed the Taurus Demon and the Bell Gargoyles (got one of the tails for that demon axe). I got the Drake sword too. I freed Griggs of Vinheim but somehow hit one of the attack buttons and was forced to kill him. I however got the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring (Wearer produces no sound whatsoever) from him which is pretty sweet and changes up how some enemies detect you, especially from behind. >:) With that ring I was able to kill the Black Knights via back stabbing, one at the top of a tower in the Undead Parish and one where you pick up the Blue Tearstone Ring. I tried taking on Havel but I just don't seem to have enough room to maneuver even with my armor unequipped. I found the Capra Demon but quickly got pwn3d...

I agree. I think this meta "discover it for yourself" layer is pretty bad. They should have properly documented the systems, and then encouraged (not forced) people to discover them for themselves. Some of the things you're supposed to discover are so obtuse that even if you talk about them with other players (which the game itself actively discourages!) you can't reason about it because there are too many variables and unknowns to link cause and effect. I feel that the core game is good enough to not need nor benefit from all the obfuscation.

I have now read the "Dark Souls FuturePress Official mini-guide" (the booklet that was supposed to come with the lim.ed but was cut and replaced with an electronic copy) and it explained a lot, but in some ways left you with more questions. It has maps for the first regions, stats for the enemies (including drop-lists), boss strategies and weapon lists. Much of what you can find on some wiki-pages are clearly just cut'n'pasted from it. The full 400+ page version is only included with the "Collector's Edition" :-\

Anyway, the cut-down guide contains ALL the information you would WANT to discover for yourself, and NONE of the information that you DON'T want.

What I [think I] know about humanity is that it's lost if you die, so it'll be zero after death. Humanity increases slowly if you play long stretches without using a bonfire. If you find Humanity items, it probably makes sense to not use them until you need them, because you always keep the items when you die.

If you have humanity you can use some to "Reverse hollow", making you human. When you are human, NPCs may interact differently with you, and you can kindle bonfires, making them so that they give you more flasks when you rest.

You can only be invaded if you're in human form(?)

I've heard it speculated that you might get some small bonuses when human, such as increased drop rate. I have not yet unhollowed so have not experienced any of these things for myself.

Returning to full humanity is probably a part of the end-game.

This is Dark Souls :p

we don't need no frackin manuals or wikis! :p

for new starters
don't put more than 30 points into vitality until you are like 120 + SL cuz you start getting diminishing return ( 2x per points instead of 3x)
also endurance caps @ 40 yon won't get anymore load / stamina
i think i'm getting pretty close to the end too bad i can't play again until tuesday

Humanity definitely does increase drop rates, so its nice to keep some on your counter if available. If you die, the humanity stays with your corpse as well, so when you pick it up, you'll get it all back. This way, you'll still only need to spend one point getting back to human.

Being human also allows you to summon phantoms (both NPC and Human) to help in boss fights, but also leaves you open to being invaded.

Damn...looks like my Dark Souls disc is stuck in the disk drive. First time this has ever happened. Has anybody on here dealt with such a situation? If you know how to get that disk out, please don't hesitate to respond. I was JUST starting to really enjoy this game, to the point where I'd be out running an errand, and the whole time I can't wait til I get home!

I realize that even if I get the disk out, it won't necessarily mean my ps3 will be ok. But at least we will have taken the first step. Thanks guys!

Ugh I just got done playing for nearly 11 hours straight. In the 30's now. I killed Havel, Capra Demon, and the Gaping Dragon (chopped off it's tail and got that axe). I remember some post somewhere about some weird frog looking things and their fucking curses in the sewers, I avoided being cursed. In the Darkroot Garden now. Damn this game is addicting. I gotta put it down. I know I'll dream about this game once I get to sleep (not good since my video game dreams are very repetitive, like grinding for 8 hours...).

Is there anywhere to sell items? I've got a giant build up of crap.

Backstabbing is just hitting someone in the back, right? Nothing special to it? I can never tell if I am backstabbingor not

Is there a good blacksmithing guide somewhere?

False - You will max out on STAM but you will continue to increase your load amount to a point.

There is a specific animation for back stab. You will basically kill just about anything in one hit with a back stab with the appropriate level weapon.

Without spoiling anything you will be able to sell stuff after you ring a second bell, a NPC appears at Firelink Shrine.

That assholw with the huge club that one shots people keeps predicting my roll. I can stab him a few times, but invariably he goes into the animation, I roll, and then he suddenly swings where I am, not where I was when the animation started.

roll back instead of side
he's really tough unless you have magic early on

I killed Havel pretty easily, simply remove all armor since he kills you anyway if he connects. When he pulls back to swing his club, be ready to roll to the side before he brings it crashing down, then attack him.

With the Drake Sword, i think it took like 30ish hits or so before he goes down. It's not really THAT hard, even if i did die once in the attempt.

easy method to killing him

have him chase you to the stairs near the blacksmith, he'll usually stop chasing around the railing, shoot arrows at him through the railing, he'll backup out the door but just run out and aggro him and rinse repeat

edit: thought we were talking about a different guy, my bad

Collector's Edition only comes with digital copy as well.

This way, you'll still only need to spend one point getting back to human.

The higher your humanity count, the higher your defenses and drop rate. Just want to be clear so people don't think leaving it at 1 is ideal.

make sure when you approach to backstab you carefully walk up behind your opponent and press r1 when super close.

Finally got it to work, but the hit detection kind of sucks. Need to be aiming at the right shoulder of the enemy.

The Capra demon is cheap as hell. That is the only thing so far I feel is just poor design and not difficulty. Difficulty is one thing, insta cheese death as soon as you zone in over and over is another. I can't even get my strategy going because it depends on how lucky you are rolling away from 3 enemies in a tight space.

And I beat him with pure cheese once I finally got around the dogs on the 8th try. Stair abuse plus falling damage.

I fucking hate how Namco Bandai fucked up the online of Dark Souls...

It was fucking perfect (for the type of game) in Demon's Souls, but nope... they fucked it all up...

They key to getting consistent back-stabs, at least this is what I've noticed, don't press anything but R1. In other words, release both sticks, take your fingers off all buttons. Only thing that should be pressed at that moment is R1. Try that, it almost always works that way. Otherwise, it's very hit and miss for me...

Dear Blight Town: eat a huge bag of dicks.

Ok, where is the fucking bonfire down here? This place sucks balls.

What the hell! I find it and light it and it takes me all the way back to the depths fire. Fuck this.

Backstab hitbox is dependent on weapon type. Daggers have the widest backstab zone while bigger weapons have smaller ones. Same with shield class and parry/riposte windows.

I agree about the Capra Demon 100%. I've beaten him four times now across different characters and it's still just a roll of the dice.

lol...I just finished that place along with the boss and I never want to go back there again. At least the blowdart snipers don't respawn.

That IGN review was right on the dot when they said after going through some places in the game, you're excited when you get back to the sunlit places like the undead burg.

Where you first get off the wooden planks and into the poison swamp area, hug the right wall and the bonfire is inside a cave. If you hit the waterwheel, you've gone too far.

So, where's a good place to go after the Hydra?

I've already did undead burg/rung the bell up top. However if I go into the area after the Hydra (up that ladder next to the waterfall) those tree things kill me in two normal attacks.

(I'm lv 19, have drake sword, etc).

If you looted the basement key off a corpse behind the gate that the Metal Boar was guarding, backtrack to the door directly across the stairwell you came down where you first met Solaire and the Red Dragon. You'll have to take on the Capra Demon and he'll drop the key to the Depths which is around the boss area as well.

Ty, I had forgotten all about that key lol.

BTW isn't the Pyromancer npc near there? (after you kill the Capra demon). I need some new spells, still only have the starter pyro spell.

Yep, pyro trainer is in the depths. Once you kill butcher boy, go down the stairs and wade across some water and look to your left. He'll be encased in one of the barrels, make sure you ROLL into the barrel and not swing your weapon to break it otherwise bye-bye. You can then meet him back at the firelink shrine.

Has anyone else done multiplayer? It is literally unplayable with with three people. The frame rate must drop down to 15fps.

depends on the area I assume. Blighttown is a shit show for FPS. Bosses it's no big deal.

Blighttown was by far the worst. I was killed watching a power point slide show of my character getting pwned.

I apparently went through that area like a moron. I ended up in the swamp getting poisoned over and over repeatedly, never found the second campfire, and ended up going up the waterwheel and to the starting campfire.

Guess I'll go back down tomorrow. Still haven't done the forest.

You have to actually rest at the bonfire you just can't light it. I found that out the hard way too. I lit the Depths one went around killing shit, died and respawned at the Firelink Shrine. I was like WTF?!

well just finished first play through probably gonna start second play through and start invading others soon :D
