Rage sucks

I'm reserving judgement till I play the game tonight after work. If it sucks then Carmack and his games are dead to me from now on. I'll vote with my wallet.

Same here, except play Friday because Europeans must be punished with a later release date as usual.

If texture pop´ing isn´t fixed on AMD GPUs, in a matter of days, I will burn my Steam copy to a DVD and send it to id´s office with a "thank you so much note" attached.

The OP is a complete tool. I cant believe Kyle "rick rolled" me into clicking on to a link that lead me to this thread from the [H] main page. Seriously Kyle? This guy? This guy shouldnt even be allowed to post.

How disappointing. I have been looking forward to this, BF3 and Skyrim. This apparently sucks, BF3 is going the way of COD if they don't fix shit, and Skyrim is going to be a console port. At the beginning of 2011 I honestly thought it would be a big year for PC games, now it looks like it will be my last.

I'm disappointed that not only is one guy's opinion turning into a lynch-mob, the front page editorial is basing it's panning of the game on one outside review and this thread.

I haven't played the game since it was just released.

I'd say that jugdement should be based on real gameplay and more than one guy's opinion.

But if you paid one lick of attention to the development of this game, it has been widely known the XBox 360 was the main development platform, but it's not like id doesn't know anything about PC gaming, so I'll withhold my judgement.

One thing, I bet it's better than Dead Island.:D

My opinion is so important it deserves its own dedicated thread.

^^ One of several annoying trends I've seen on the uptick around here as of late.

First of all, if you bought it, $60 dollars is a nice little chunk of change. I'm not going to laugh at you. I will say this however. If you haven't bought it, then you and I are on the same page.

I've seen all the videos just like everyone else. There was nothing ever there from the start that made me think I wanted that game. This is not a surprise at all. The writing was on the wall long ago. It's just more of the same old tired crap that is ID and everyone else. I could care less about the engine, the guy behind the engine or the history of the company. At the end of the day, I want to play a fun game.

From the very start, the tired old looking shotgun, the 10lbs of steel handgun and all the other tired and uninspired looking weapons along with the uninspired sounds they made just bored me.

Here we are present day and horrible reviews are coming in. Ok, and? Could there ever had been any other conclusion? No.

This engine only has a chance under some other hungry and new dev team. Maybe then can we see something promising.

I have my copy from Amazon coming later today. I may just sit on it for a little while and see what happens and if things don't get a turn around right quick I'll simply send it back for a refund. I've got 30 days. More than enough time.

I realized for months that id was going to sell out to the consoles and cater to them primarily like just about everyone else, but even given that some of the shoddy performance issues I'm seeing and hearing about today are downright inexcusable coming from them.

With SS3 being delayed, I was itching on pulling the trigger on this one, glad I didn't.

For all the bitching, this thread saved me $60.

Played an hour this morning.... Looked great and worked fine for me.

Agree with all of the above. Plus someone else commented saying they played it for an hour and it works great for them, although it was an hour it contradicts what op said. Why don't we wait for some reviews that are a bit more objective in reviewing the game? I'm sure this game isn't GOTY or close to it but it might just be one of those 8/10 sorta games and there's no reason to completely trash a game like that. Just cause it doesn't live up to your possibly over hyped expectations of ID games doesn't mean its utter garbage. That being said.. $60 is a lot to ask for and it should be pretty good for that price. Lets all just prevent a lynch mob/group think mentality here and prevent what could be a decent game from getting exposure and sales because of an echo chamber of gamers saying it sucks, with few actually trying it.

Steve, in the front page [H]ard News section, says "Joystiq gives Rage and id Software a thrashing" but Joystiq ends up giving RAGE a 3 out of 5 stars.. I was expecting more like a DNF 2 out of 5. I guess ID just has too high a reputation to uphold.

At this moment on Metacritic, Xbox version has an 80 (out of 26 critics), PS3 has 81 (9 critics) and a 4.8 for PC (the Rage PC page isn't coming up for me so have no ideas how many critics). DNF had scores of 49 (Xbox), 51 (PS3) and 54 (PC) and plenty of people in [H] were saying DNF wasn't that bad of a game. But perhaps the problem is not with the console versions but with the PC version.

And this is the reason that you're on my ignore list. Too bad threads you post still show up.

I dunno, I wouldn't open it. I'm also hearing it's a very short game. These games really are a dime a dozen. They are money grabs. Sure it looks pretty but but who the hell cares. Look around. There are 100 games just like this one. Run around, race around, point and pull the trigger, kill something. Shit is so boring. You literally have to be 12 to get excited about Rage, honestly. There is just no way anyone in there 20's should give 2 shits about this game. And last time I checked, all those single parent families out there don't really have $70 dollars to throw around. I have a feeling they are going to get hurt bad on this release due to their poor performance. I hope they do and I hope other companies are watching and as a result, step up their game.

Ultimately this is my problem with the game. I'll probably still get it, but I'll wait till its <= $20.

Don't jump! You still have Wii U to look forward too.

Take the rest of the whiners with you, please.

Most Triple A PC games start at $50 since they don't have to pay the high royalties of their console brethren. I often get games on sale for $30-$40 or when they have a steam event or a weekend deal I get dozens of games for the cost of one or two. And Often when I buy the sequel they give me the original for free when I pre-order it. $60 is too much for a PC game. I won't pay more than $50 and will wait for a sale.

Although I respect your opinion, it is pretty strong for second or third hand information and no basis in personal experience.

There is nothing I have read in this thread except for ONE person's first hand opinion that makes me feel strongly for or against this product.

I have it coming today, and I will gladly light a torch and carry a pitchfork it the game sucks, I bet it won't.

That said, I am very disappointed it is not EyeFinity ready.
I am also disappointed AMD hasn't released a Crossfire profile for the game.
That said.....they still haven't released one for Dead Island and that game is a month or more since release.

The game is working out of the box @ 6048x1080 eyefinity for me. CF is not yet working and the HUD is not yet centered, but other than that it's working fine. I was surprised when the game booted up find in eyefinity.

I feel like everyone needs to calm down. I'm sure the game will be fine once it gets patched up.

Take a look @ ShuttleLuv's post history. I was going to quote it here, but that's mean. I think he's having a bad night.

My thoughts exactly. This thread is full of a bunch of people hating on something, but providing no sort of proof to back up their claims. Threads like these are terrible.

Also, I hate graphics whores. Play the fucking game and try to get some enjoyment out of it ffs. The game doesn't have to look perfect as long as the gameplay is solid.

I read this thread and was expecting a bad game. That wasn't the case at all. The game is decent and it is pretty entertaining. Graphically, it looks good except for all those pop ins and that is pretty much what annoys me most. Not sure if it's an AMD problem or the game itself but I dont like the pop ins at all.

Now that I think about it, there were a lot of official game play video's that jumped around with shot cuts, etc. I bet it was id cutting out scenes where there were bad texture load-ins.

You could have been smart like a lot of us and actually, you know, remembered what kind of games they make, and therefore expected a linear bargain bin shooter using technological trickery to do things otherwise impossible or unlikely with current hardware. ID worship because of their technical achievements always made me lol, because they cannot make a good computer game (commander keen not withstanding), and RAGE is no exception.

Seriously, Doom was only good because of its technical achievements and because there was no competition at the time.

I have played it for a few minutes before going to work. I must admit that I am not impressed as much as I was hoping I was going to be so far. I did not expect to be blown out of my mind, but at least to be pleased with my purchase and have some entertaining game play. I have not made a day one purchase in a loooooong time. With all the game sales I have saved much money and felt that the games I purchased entered their proper price points, and was not disappointed. I decided to give this a try on day one, since it was an id game and I was somewhat pleased with what I saw with the videos. However......

It is very dry so far, but id games are very dry. Usually, lacking much, but still entertaining. I have a feeling that this will be somewhat to very disappointing till I play co-op. However, to my understanding I have to unlock the co-op sections? That is asinine just as much as the defibrillator sequence if you die.

The first negative critique was not the loading of a textures. Which is not as prevalent for me as I have have seen in some videos. It was how the pistol felt and sound. It was complete shit, especially, after playing the beta for BF3. Again though id sounds for weapons have never been really good. And, yes, I felt like I did some LSD with the texture loading happening in the corners very fast (for me at least) bullshit; could this not have been discovered as an issue before release?

I do not like the fucking Bethesda reticles. I would prefer my small dot that I would always get with id games, or something similar. Not as ugly, and taking too much space of my direct center POV. Speaking of view and space. The fucking mini-map is a big huge megatexture shit in my view. Taking up way too much space, and is very annoying.

The AI is basic. The weapon projectiles of the opposition were slow. It was like a simple Aikido exercise for blending. Is this on hard; I asked myself? This is all I can say till I play some more, but I am not happy with my purchase...so far.

I do like the animations for hit locations...though.

Hating? Seriously? There is video footage of this cliche mess all over the internet. You guys are way too sensitive, honestly. These are opinions only. Reviews, opinions, same difference. No one is stopping you from sitting down in front of your Xbox or your PC and playing Rage. No one. With that said, if you've not had your fill yet of run and jump, point and shoot first person shooters then knock yourself out. I will be the first to admit it, I'm just some random internet guy. But I will tell you this, I'm far from hating. Hating on what? Rage? Hardly ... been there, done that, 100 times over. You may piss your panties when ID Software names dropped but I assure, I don't. At the end of the day, I'm sold on the game, not the branding. And I am sure most here would agree, the weapon designs are b-o-r-i-n-g. Dude, if Rage makes you nerdrage, I'm happy for you lol. I'm on your side, trust me. This is a $5 dollar steam sale game for me next year or down the road. That's all I'm saying. More importantly, l am interested in what the general consensus will be on this game and so far, it's looking like the people that really enjoy playing games are the ones "hating" on this slop. Rage is just more fast food pop culture FPS for the masses. If you can't see that then, I don't know what to tell ya.

I think you need to read the OP again. Sounds like some hate to me.

I feel scammed. Fucking scammed. John Carmack.....why? You just lost every ounce of your elite status as a game programmer. This game is shit, plain and simple.

Visually, one of the worst looking games that has come out in 7 years. Far Cry looks better than this. This game has the worst texture pop in, textures (we're talking Quake 2 / Sin quality, possibly low end Quake 3 here) I have seen yet on a modern game. Doom 3 is visually and gameplay wise superior to this game in every aspect. Absolutely no HDR or lighting, nothing modern. The desert has no shadows, nothing casts shadows it's all static.

OMFG.I am so pissed. I spent $60 on this hunk of dog shit when money is tight. NEVER again. Gaming on this very night, the 4th of October, has died. Gaming is dead, long live the king. The game has no direction, no compelling storyline, visuals that reek, terrible mouse controls, no console, no tweakablity. What the fucking fuck is this and how did it get past John Carmack's brain? Too much cell phone programming. I actually cannot force myself to load it back up, it's THAT bad.

This game aint got shit on Duke Nukem Forever. I'm just awe struck. I told my nephew tonight gaming has died. The true pc gaming is dead forever, fuck your texture packs, fuck your patches. This is a Xbox 360 game ported sneakily to look like a pc game. It's a wolf in sheeps clothing. No goddamn excuse that having a sandy at 5 ghz, 12 gigs of ram, and a GTX 480 @ 580 with 1.5 gb of ram looks like this. I want my $60 back motherfucker!

It's pretty damned clear that the game was developed with consoles in mind as their primary focus. I don't think this is news. I also don't know how this fact can escape anyone's attention who is looking to buy the game.

I don't get people feeling scammed that this was a console port...this game all along was talked about primarily being designed for consoles, to the extent that Carmack's biggest selling point was 60 FPS on a console.

WTF did you expect from a game designed to run @ 60 FPS on 10+ year old hardware?

EDIT: Oops, Dan beat me too it.

Yeah I remember this being talked about for a long time. Further more id and Carmack's work in general haven't been relevant to PC gaming in years.

I haven't played too much yet (about an hour early this morning), but I haven't experienced any technical issues. I am very surprised at how great certain parts of the game look, but how they contrast hugely with SUPER low resolution textures in other parts (the screenshot posted earlier in this thread of Hagar's place showing the electrical conduit on the wall as a flat texture is the first real 'wtf' moment I had).

I'm wondering (hoping) that maybe it's an issue with the auto-configuration system pushing settings too low? How on earth could they have a 21 gig install with such low res textures? I'm in disbelief, I would have thought even the PS3 and 360 could push better textures than that....seems like too glaring of a fault to be a design decision. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a fuck up that can be fixed by a patch.

people seem to be looking for reasons to hate or dislike PC games nowadays...nitpicking and bandwagon jumping from people who never even played the game...forums in general breed negativity...no matter how awesome a game might be people are always looking to create conversation or troll for no reason

wasn't there an article a few weeks back stating how we are living in a golden period as far as PC gaming yet all people do is complain

Exactly. Crying, "PC Gaming is dead!" because a game 90% made for consoles is bad? Get a grip, people. It's one thing that the game is bad, terribly designed, etc, but to be surprised/upset that it is a console port means you paid 0 attention to what you were buying.

Other than breaking ground with Doom/2 and Quake/2, everything since then they've made has gone downhill. Q3 had a great engine and weapon handling, but I hated "rainbow quake" with its fruity health bubbles. Like Steve said in the news feed, it would be better if id just concentrated their resources on the engine and quit pretending to be game developers.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. It's cool to complain now. It's gotten so bad that if you're going to say something good about a game, you had better be wearing you flame suit.

I think your feelings are hurt and you're telling me I'm hating. That's what people do when their feelings are hurts. It's ok. I understand.
