AMD Bulldozer expected for Oct release.

The thing is too.. Consumer rigs are moving towards PCI-E 3.0. Boards are coming out with it, next gen am 7000 series will be pci-e 3.0 as well as the new Nvidia cards if I'm not mistaken. Intel will be rolling out with the Ivy Bridge cpu in about 6 months or so (hopefully) that will then enable pci-3.0.

I wouldn't belive in that too much. Even today x16 PCI-ex 1.0 slot will be fine and non limiting for single GPU cards.

Conceded, but even if the real McCoy hits twice the clockspeed and that eng sample has just about everything (L2/L3 cache, branch prediction god knows what else) turned off, do you see it getting anywhere under the 10second mark?

If we make a guess that it scales linearly with those specific numbers then no, it will not reduce 40(total time) by 2(processing speed) and get < 10. However as you have said, we do not know what is turned off and what is isn't working etc. I don't know what modifications or improvements could be made in a few months time to iron out whatever problems they were or are having. I do know that things can change dramatically from a debug build vs a release build of software. I will equate a hardware release in the same manner - I don't know until final silicon is out.

We can speculate all we want, and I am getting impatient as well, but I think people would rather see benchmarks and real world usage numbers instead of what I think it may or may not do.

This is really turning out to be a poor showing for a desktop release. People have been sitting on these mediocre 990fx boards for months and the only news has been rumors of bad news.

I agree on this completely. However, I do think picking up a 990x in hopes that bulldozer will live up to the hype was a risk and unfortunately, it hasn't had great returns. I did not pick up a 990x and will probably get one once I see numbers.

On servers Opterons can go as low as 400MHz so I would say 500Mhz doesn't sound like a stretch.

I just keep wondering if this entire "BD is too damn slow" debacle had something to do with Dirk "Diggler" Meyer being shown the door...

I hope AMD releases the chip soon, because I'm not sure I can tolerate any more, wah wah it's going to be rubbish threads based on rumors and faked benchmarks.

Clearly it will at least compete with sandy bridge, current thubans aren't really that much slower than Intel.

I just keep wondering if this entire "BD is too damn slow" debacle had something to do with Dirk "Diggler" Meyer being shown the door...

I think that was more due to the board wanting to focus on low power processors to try and eat ARM's lunch.

If they wanted to oust Meyer over a failed CPU project, they would have done so when the Greyhound project didn't deliver.

People think it's going to be slow because AMD has been quiet (they usually keep their cards close to the chest) and it keeps getting put off (now we know that is down to supply issues).

I think it will beat current Intel offerings, maybe Ivy Bridge will be faster. But it will be a great upgrade path for me since I just have to buy the CPU and nothing else.

And that's another point. Not everyone who's waiting for Bulldozer are people building new systems. Some are just upgrading older systems.

I never post on here, (mainly due to being an AMD fanboy) although i've been visiting these forums along with a few others every chance i get. Ever since the announcment of bulldozer and how they were planning to take back the high end enthusiast crown. I've hoping for some good news, leaked benches, and any info that would help me understand how they were going to do accomplish this. and today I just read the CanardPC tidbit posted on here. This information, although very brief, is the most releaving thing i've read about bulldozer and i have to admit i feel crushed. This really is depressing... I've been so optimistic about AMD getting back in the game. Not just so i can build a good machine, but just to see the underdog get it's day. Sadly this sounds like AMD just dug their own grave, With them being unable to beat intel's current offerings, And with Ivy Bridge on the horizon, This is probably the worst news i've read about AMD for years.. I don't think i'll be wasting my time checking the CPU sections anymore, I hate to bash AMD, but i feel betrayed and deceived, This is really shitty news..
I would imagine everyone that was looking forward to building their new bulldozer desktop feels something similar... Shame on you AMD!!
I hate to say this but i guess i'll be buying the new ivy bridge line up, which sucks, I don't really like Intel (Dirty market tactics) but AMD has left me no choice :(

(sorry i don't have spell check, I'm forced to use IE7 on my military network )

I do support AMD...but I don't support sucky products just because they are the underdog company. IF BD comes out and is competitive I will consider it, but am highly doubtful at this point.

they always have pricing. They can just price these things really low. That is what probably will happen anyways if the performance really is like Canard suggests

I appreciate your viewpoint but I'm talking HIGH END. Yesterday my 2600K arrived. I bought the fastest consumer processor on the market. If that had been FX then I would have bought it. IF these figures are correct, FX8150 does not exceed 2600K in overall performance. So what chance does it have against SB-E and IB? Zero. It's over for AMD on THE HIGH END ALONE. The rest of the market I don't give a damn about as it's not what I need.

All my pieces arrived yesterday and I'm expecting my mobo and RAM today. This weekend I'm building it and I'll be posting pix of my case mods in that section. It could have been an FX but for me and me alone, AMD blew it.

I dispute that they focused on cost consciousness during their existence. It wasn't too long ago that if you wanted the fastest consumer CPU in existence it was an AMD!

It makes sense given your mobo, but that's darn near the price of a 2500K and it eats the 1090T for breakfast on damn near anything you can throw at it. So if you were starting a build from scratch, it would make no sense to go AMD. IMHO, BD was AMD's last chance to trump Intel on the high end. Once Intel hits IB and Haswell, there won't be enough money in Abu Dhabi to get them to catch up.

Has your medication kicked in yet? :)

+1

GloFo was set up as nothing more than to be Ruiz's little empire where he could suck up all that nice Arab $ while passing along insider info to Chiesi in exchange for... er... y'know! :) Once Ruiz had to run away to avoid the slammer, the place has no reason to exist, and IMHO it's gonna drag AMD down with it. I really would not at all be surprised if within a couple of years there's nothing left of AMD except... wait for it... ATI!!!!!

sounds like you are really bummed for not being able to get a bd right now ... can understand since you know what you have in front of you and what to look forward too from intel in the next few months ...
and yet from amd its a big ?

gl with the build - link some pics here so we can see.

A low-priced, large, complex CPU die with low yields and poor performance. That will make the analysts happy.

Oh, wai-

AMD is probably about to take a page from the HP playbook and spin off its CPU production and become just a video card manufacturer. This has been ridiculous. Ask anyone who waited for the Pre 3, lol.

I'm already enjoying my 2500k setup. i wish amd would have admitted they were having problems earlier, i might have waited........

The question is though if C&Q was enabled when they ran SuperPI...
I mean who would purposely downclock BD to 500Mhz to run the test?

edit: Anyone wanna downclock their Phenom2 to 500Mhz and Run SP1.5 and see how it does? My Core2Duo at 3500Mhz does 1M in 13.5 seconds.

What other choice do they have? If bulldozer performs better than Sandy Bridge, they can ask for (and get) a premium.

Why are we even debating 500 Mhz clock Super Pi ?

It's normal that screenshot shows 500 Mhz

1. Superpi works - cpu works at nominal frequency (or turbo)
2. Superpi finishes - cpu is downlocked to power saving mode
3. You take screenshot with finished superpi time.

If you wanted to show full clocks you would have to run something in backgroud to load cpu.

Just for laughs, I searched Google for very old references to Bulldozer & it's release date and found..

AMD K11 to have 8-16 cores?

Posted on Sunday, September 02 2007 @ 01:21:13 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

Rumour site FUD Zilla claims AMD's K11 processor generation may feature eight or even as much as 16 cores:
AMD K11, codenamed Bulldozer, is the chip that is scheduled for early 2009.

The above article is from over FOUR YEARS AGO! And if BD's original schedule was to be released by June, 2009 then it is over TWO YEARS OVERDUE!

I did find an article at PCPerspective from June 26, 2007 that mentions BD and Bobcat during the AMD Analyst Day..
These are completely new CPUs/platforms that we probably won't see until 2010 and later.

Still, other articles from July, 2007 mentioning a 2009 release date..

Expect AMD to introduce Fusion designs based on Bulldozer and Bobcat beginning in 2009. http://www.dailytech.com/Bulldozing+the+Competition+in+2009/article8204.htm

Following Barcelona, AMD will release the Bulldozer core in 2009. http://www.tgdaily.com/hardware-features/33097-update-1-amd-gets-more-aggressive-announces-next-gen-cpu-cores

I guess the takeaway of all this is.. if you feel that AMD has been talking about Bulldozer for a long time, you are RIGHT!

I think that was more due to the board wanting to focus on low power processors to try and eat ARM's lunch.

If they wanted to oust Meyer over a failed CPU project, they would have done so when the Greyhound project didn't deliver.

So let's see... AMD is losing on the low end and on the high end. Exactly what end is it succeeding in?

I would have bought BD in a heartbeat if it had outscored 2600K and been available. It's ridiculous that no one still has any firm idea of what this CPU will do... if anything! Thanks for the good wishes. I've already started a Worklog:

AMD does fairly well on the low end and in the OEM business, as well as low-mid server areas. They're not going to die just yet cause Bulldozer has been delayed so long.

I don't think anyone who was being realistic about Bulldozer expected it to outscore the 2600k in anything besides heavily multithreaded tasks. The realistic expectation of Bulldozer was to match the Nehalem and perhaps slightly beat it. In which case, you would have gone with the 2600k anyways.

As someone else stated earlier, AMD is really good at keeping the lid on things until they are released. The HD58xx series came as a surprise to everyone, and literally caught nVidia way off guard. They were so off, nVidia didn't have a response until half a year later. And their response wasn't even fully ready yet, with ultra high power consumption, heat, and noise that did not justify their performance.

And as anyone with common sense knows the theory of catching opponents of guard is rediculus - even if nvidia knew 3 months earlier they wouldn't be able to magically make their silicon mature over night.

True... but AMD did take the world by storm with their 5xxx series. And no one knew anything about how it would perform until the day it was released. At least, that's what I gathered from the time.

The same can be said for AMD in the CPU department. Intel released Nehalem, and AMD still doesn't have anything that can compete 3 years later. nVidia took about a year to catch up.

Here's to hoping we see Bulldozer in the next few weeks, and hoping it performs at least as well as Nehalem.

Yeah, I have zero interest in anything but the fastest available CPU. For something to be so widely ballyhooed to be a world beater (and there were many who were singing that song) and then (most likely) come in as a snorer that can't really even keep up with anything in the market now, let alone next month (SB-E) or next quarter (IB) is inexplicable in my book. Whether or not AMD survives in the low end or mid end... I couldn't care less. I have a far greater interest in turtle racing than I do that end of the CPU market. :)

How do you know that it can't keep up? Are there any official, NDA-sanctioned, final silicon reviews out there?

If you only cared about the high end, and you consider the FX line not worthy of your attention, why even comment? To comment on something that you're not paying attention to is to pay attention to it, even if you say you're not paying attention to it.

That is something I really don't understand, all of the people on here that are dead set on buying a SB or SB-E system, why do they comment in Bulldozer based threads? Most of the threads in this section have become like Kyle's Camaro ZL1 thread over in GenMay's Car subforum. The thread crapping was so bad, it made Kyle threaten to ban people from that forum for tc'ing.

If all of the AMD 'fanboys' are calling Bulldozer the 'second coming of Jesus', and you don't believe it will be, all you have to say is, "We will see when official benches come out." That's all.

So maybe AMD had a few hiccups with their new 32nm SOI LowK yields, its a new die shrink AND they have a new architecture, not having such deep pockets like intel is bound to give you some problems if things don't go just perfect. I'm still waiting for BD even if it isn't best of the best for the price/performance ratio i'm use to getting (we all know how much intel charges for top of the line).

I call BS on that until we get pics of hardware and actual screenshots from the same user, with proof in the pics that it's from the same person.

Which, of course, is impossible until NDA is lifted.

Edit: I also like how you picked out that one post instead of the entire thread. Reading through the entire thread, there is nothing official about it, and if it was even semi-accurate, the poster pointed out that Bulldozer is stock at 3.4 ghz and the 2600k is at 4.6 ghz.

i ditched AMD when the core 2 duo was released, I used to have a FX-66 on phase change at 3.4 gighertz back in 2007 and since the core 2 duo was released it blew it out of the water on air. I have a feeling i will be going with ivy myself.. Sandy-E is not a big impact vs the i2600k and my quad 2 duo 9550 at 3.61 with a gtx 570 is running great..

I USED TO BE THE BIGGEST INTEL FANBOY EVAR!! But their just not cool enough for me now.

So I'll be getting a Bulldozer eventually. Even though I LOVE INTEL. But they suck ;)

So instead of crying like a group of little anime girls who had their house robbed and lost all their little Pokemons :p I'll just get a BULLDOZER!

Honestly, as long as the IPC is at least 25% better than My Current 1090t and the overclock can average at 5.2Ghz, I'll be very happy with it, especially if it comes out within the next 2 weeks and is Priced at the Rumored $260...It won't exactly by the the shock that the original Athlon and the Athlon64, but I think it'll be like the Radeon 4870...
