Battlefield 3 getting nerfed

I don't know...I'm still expecting a really good game but between this thread and the "too stupid to mod" thread I find that I'm starting to get those first hints of some sinking feelings here a little bit.

Meh don't listen to all the screamers. It will be just fine.

I don't understand the controversy involving the modding. It was essentially all but official quite awhile ago that they would not really support modding. But at the same time, has BF ever had the same official modding support of the actual games associated with modding? I don't believe modding was ever remotely as associated with BF as Oblivion, SC, Quake, Half-life and etc.

There was also always a concern involving increased destruction and the much higher firepower available with adding jets back into the game. Realism and eyecandy should be placed after gameplay related to this.

Personally I was always skeptical about the amount of destruction and level of detail it could actually have. I think some people assumed it would reach the level of skyscrapers dynamically and realistically crashing down and possibly into each other in multiplayer. But in order to that the minimum system requirements (likely making GPU accelerated physics mandatory) would be much to high even for PCs. Keep in mind if you make it integral to the game play then this affects all users, and is not as simple as higher end users having more eye candy.

The level of destruction was quite impressive visually in BC2, but it wasn't actually as advanced as some people might think. A lot of it was done through "smoke and mirrors" so to speak.

I love the people who bitch about no modding....yet mods were never slightly significant in the BF series..Bitching for the sake of bitching = win!

Actually...correct me if I'm wrong, but the mod community killed BFV. There are some 1942 mods and BF2 mods still kicking.

I was into BF2 a lot like 3 years ago, and I never saw any mods. Maybe I just never noticed them, I don't know. I never heard much about them either, maybe they were just never very popular or just popular in a specific area/country.

The only popular mod I believe was "Project Reality" and even that compared to modding for other games it wasn't popular.

User content for BF is not remotely as integral to the game as say Oblivion or Starcraft, both of which receive extensive support from the developer. But keep in mind in both games a significant portion of the user base buys the game and are fans purely due to the custom user content. This has never remotely been the case with BF.

I was actually expecting mass destruction in singleplayer but turned right down in multiplayer, can't imagine how fucked up a 32 vs 32 (or even 64 vs 64) would be with mass destruction effects etc

Obviously, you're new to the BF series. Desert Combat was a mod for BF1942, and was extremely successful. It was a modern day BF game. So successful in fact, lots of people cried foul when Dice brought out BF2, because it was basically the same thing, for $50. That, and they bought the devs out who made it... then closed them down. Another class act job by Dice.

There are other examples, but that is the biggest.

edit, some info on Desert Combat; [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Combat"]Desert Combat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Weponslayoutwz0.png" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b4/Weponslayoutwz0.png/220px-Weponslayoutwz0.png"@@AMEPARAM@@en/thumb/b/b4/Weponslayoutwz0.png/220px-Weponslayoutwz0.png[/ame]

On September 1, 2004, Digital Illusions CE (DICE) bought Trauma Studios, the developers of the Desert Combat Battlefield 1942 Modification to help work on Battlefield 2.

Shortly before the release of Battlefield 2, DICE announced that the company has "decided to discontinue the New York office, Trauma Studios." DICE will no longer pay $200,000 in outstanding funds from the original deal.

FilePlanet's Best Mod of 2003
GameSpy's 2003 PC Modification of the Year
FilePlanet's Best New Mod for 2002

So as you can see, at least one mod was "slightly significat".
