NY Post Blocks Website Access for iPad Users

lol @ this thread

I don't like Apple as a company and I would never buy a Mac desktop (possibly a MacBook, if they were more reasonably priced, as I love the design and feel) but the iPad is a pretty nice device. My company gave me one for free and after using it for a while, it's a pretty nice, handy device.

People get way too bent out of shape about this. Does Apple as a company have some pretty shitty policies? Yep, they definitely do. But the product itself is well designed. Give me a break.

I wish it was just this thread. It seems HardOCP finds the need to stir this crap up every single day lately. It's definitely getting old. Fine, we get it already, HardOCP is anti-Apple.

By design, it doesn't use Flash. "Can't" isn't truthful. Where does it not compete with others?

I waited for the next part before replying:

The article is about the NY Post, not the iPad itself.
You sound awfully bent on bashing when the topic isn't even about the iPad itself. Since this is the case, you might be brainwashed, stupid, and in need of feeding your unicorn. :p

If you don't dick with it, the ipad "can't" play flash, so yes, "can't" is 100% truthful. If you download this or that, or jailbreak it, then yes, it "can". Buy it from the store and don't do any of that, NO, it "can't".

This is a very, very simply concept.

The article is about the NY post blocking the ipad, so YES, it's about the ipad.

I hope you can get some therapy for that vile hatred you hold toward others that have a different opinion than you.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing about a lot of Apple users. Since I'm not the only one who bashes Apple, maybe you should do some self reflection. I know I'm an asshole. because most of the time, I'm right and no one wants to hear it, so I get labeled an asshole.

Don't care. Sorta like how everything I own is paid for, I make nothing but my disability, yet I live better than all of the people I know that make 3 to 5 times more than me. I tell them why they are broke, I tell them how to fix it, and guess what? They don't. They just like to bitch. Oh, and I'm still the asshole.

No prob...more lulz for me.

No ones told me the deal. Whats the deal? Tell me.

I've simply stated that the iPhone is technologically superior to Android phones because of it's GPU and hardware graphics acceleration capabilities. Are you trying to argue that point with me?

The only thing you can argue is weather or not the GPU makes the iPhone superior in tech. I submit yes it does. You can't argue that Android devices have hardware graphics acceleration, or powerful GPUs. Hint: They don't.

Android phones are only half a device. As I said earlier, it's like haveing a 5ghz processor with integrated video.

Do I have to repeat my last post? I'm not arguing the facts you posted. What I'm trying to convey to you is the exact point you aren't, and won't get because you've been sucked into Apples' realtiy distortion field.

Most of the mud-slinging is by the users. Steve's posts are tame and if they upset you that much, well, I'd try and just get over it :p

I don't really care what people's opinions are on what I buy. I just use whatever products appeal to me. I do think a lot of Apple users are trendwhores rather than power users, but if they have the money to blow more power to them.

Also, I don't see why there is so much hate on the iPad here because a third party decided to take advantage of the users. This isn't an Apple problem or an iPad problem, it's a business trying to take advantage of customers. This shouldn't be condoned regardless of what platform you support. If you think they won't turn on you if this proves profitable on the iOS platform, you are very wrong.

JESUS. ENOUGH ALREADY. You're right about the hardware acceleration, the Android guys were wrong, happy?

if I read the ny post (i dont) i would simply move on to a different news site. This is very stupid of them to risk losing their user base.

I'll take my phone with a more customizable OS that isn't straight out of 2007, thanks. If someone were even to concede the iPhone is technologically superior, that does not necessarily make it the best phone as a complete package, nor the best user experience.

Do I have to repeat my last post? I'm not arguing the facts you posted. What I'm trying to convey to you is the exact point you aren't, and won't get because you've been sucked into Apples' realtiy distortion field.

What if I'm not in the field, but you are?

Theres tinkering to be done on Android phones to get the most out of them. Surely you won't argue that point. Custom ROMs, etc, are the main draw for users like you. So if you are comfortable with modding your Android phone out of the box to enable a better experience, why bash the iPad?

Last I checked, Hulu was a site that didn't work on most Android phones without a user agent faker. Isn't that right? Wheres the hate on Anroid phones for Hulu's decision?

Another example of modding to do something the iPhone can: Netflix. You have to hack that app onto your phone if it isn't supported, don't you? Yes you do.

The list goes on.

The point is it goes both ways. Don't accuse me of being in a distortion field when that which you accuse me of applies to your side equally.

JESUS. ENOUGH ALREADY. You're right about the hardware acceleration, the Android guys were wrong, happy?

Actually, he's wrong. I can't nobody mentioned the fact that both Android 2.3 and Honeycomb 3.0 introduced Hardware Acceleration into the OS.

Seems he's not so right.

Last I checked, the Exynos SoC from Samsung is the single most powerful SoC on the market. Even more-so than the A5 derivative in the iPad 2. And the only OS that currently runs on it is Android.

I don't know how you CAN'T say Android devices don't have powerful GPUs. Even if you were correct that they couldn't use them (Hint: You're not correct) you'd be wholly incorrect about the weak GPU.

Another quite powerful SoC is the OMAP 4430 that's used in the Droid 3 and the Blackberry Playbook. Again, a very powerful SoC with a powerful GPU.

Look under Version history

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history#3.0_.2F_3.1_Honeycomb

More detail.

Hardware graphics not added until Honeycomb. Thats a tablet only OS. HGA will not be implemented for phones until Ice Cream Sandwich.

Looks like I'm right.

I must have been remembering back to the rumors of 2.3 including HWA.

Still, your assertion that the iPhone is the only OS with HWA is wholly incorrect. I'm not sure what your beef with Android is (seeing as you're the one who brought it up) but Symbian and WP7 both have HWA as well.

I believe WebOS and MeeGo does as well.

Exynos? Are you referring to the Galaxy S II? Cause I believe that uses a Tegra 2 GPU. I've already provided info on how that GPU stacks up.

The other GPUs you mentioned are for tablets. Android on tablets DOES have hardware graphics acceleration. As mentioned before, the HGA will only be in PHONES with the release of Ice Cream Sndwch.

Nowhere did I say the iPhone was the only phone in existence with HGA.

Nowhere did I say the iPhone was the only phone in existence with HGA.

You asserted it was with your blanket statement about how important GPU HWA was and how superior the iPhone was because of it.

I'd go so far to argue that the WP7 UI from my personal experience is even smoother than the iPhone's.

Install iCabMobile, set browser ID to opera, no block.
Wow.
That.was.hard.

No, the Exynos is the name of the SoC used in the GS II. It in fact does not use the Tegra 2.

And the OMAP 4430 is NOT a Tablet SoC. Until Kal-El hits there are not tablet specific SoCs on the market. Or did you miss the part where I said the same SoC in the Playbook was used in the Droid 3, which is most definitely a smartphone?

You may have been correct about Gingerbread not having full HWA, but it's quite foolish of you to try and say that other phones don't have dedicated GPUs or that they're somehow significantly weaker than the A5 or A4.

Once again, that is wholly incorrect.

While I think Android as an OS is awesome, I wish Google would exert a bit more quality control onto the phones that run it. I realize it is Open Source and that's great, but my Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) is a piece of shit with utterly broken GPS.

Curse not having an edit function:

Also, stop calling them GPUs. They aren't GPUs, they're SoCs.

SOC means System on a chip. That system includes the Processor (CPU), GPU, and Ram.

GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit.

So yeah, I'm talking GPU right now, one of the components of the SOC.

Youre right about the Galaxy s II not using Tegra. It uses a Mali 400 GPU. I found some benchmarks showing its performance to be roughly equal or less than Tegra. So looks like I overestimated the GPU of the GS2.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses Tegra.

The A5 GPU, The PowerVR SGX543 Dual core, has shown to be many times more powerful than tegra.

Look at this review of tablets:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4445/samsung-galaxy-tab-101-review/8

The bottom 2 benchmarks are graphics.

You realize that graphics performance is only one aspect of a tablet's overall performance, right?

It's crazy how fast these types of threads change to something completely different. At this point I've learned that the NY Post is lame, people who choose to read it on an ipad can either buy the app or change the user-agent of thier browser in a variety of ways or read another paper. I've also learned a lot about phone and tablet hardware. I'd say it's a safe bet to assume that at this point pretty much any 'news' thread with either apple or i(anything) in the title will get at least a few pages of posts, not necessarily about the thread topic though.

QFT!

Also, it's the fucking NY Post, people -- not the Times. The Post is and always has been complete garbage.

You realize that graphics performance is only one aspect of a tablet's overall performance, right?

I'd agree with the commenter ont hat review who said that GPU performance is the most important aspect of a tablet. The ability to draw and render affects user experience more then waiting 1.5 seconds vs 1.75 seconds for an app to load.

You're moving goal posts. My point is that the iproducts don't do flash out of the box. Android does. Now you're trying to tell me android needs some tinkering to get the most out of them. That is true. BUT, they DO run things (flash, for example...my arguemtn in this case) out of the box.

And you want to know how I know I'm not in the reality distortion field and you are? I have, several times, said some of you posts had facts that were true. I have no problem admitting when someone has correct points. YOU, on the other hand, have made no such acknowledgement of my points. Instead, you try to be sly (intentionally or not) and change the wording (moving the goal posts of the argument) to make it seem like you are right about the part of the debate in which you are, in fact wrong about.

Android does flash with no tinkering, out of the box.
iproducts do not.

Until you admit, with nothing less than a "yes, this a correct assessment" I will not continue this with you because you aren't being reasonable.

Now, I'm almost willing to go as far as saying that to the average user, android is more user friendly out of the box for this very issue by itself, let alone the other things android can do that you need to tinker with the iphone to get working. Think about it. Joe user picks up his new iphone and wonders why the hell he can't see any flash. Given the amount of flash on the net, that's sorta big. Now, Joe user had to dick around with it to get it to work. Joe user, typically, does not want to do that.

Joe user isn't like you or I, or the other members on [H]. Joe user want shit to work like they assume it's going to work. And Apples marketing does nothing but lead Joe user on. I mean, you can argue the fact that when the first iphone came out, Apple claimed it was "revolutionary". Yet it didn't have certain features that other phones had for years. Sure, the screen was great, but to me, Apple's marketing tactics stink. And as for why I don't like Apple zealots, it's simple. They take every word Apple feeds them and regurgitate it as gospel, and if you try to educate them, they tell you that you are wrong....like they are some sort of guru because they overpaid for an Apple product.

It's ludicrous. Like I said, if people acted like it was just another option with certain advantages and disadvantages, I don't think they'd get as much shit. But as you are proving, Most Apple people don't act reasonable. No offense.

I'd agree with the commenter ont hat review who said that GPU performance is the most important aspect of a tablet. The ability to draw and render affects user experience more then waiting 1.5 seconds vs 1.75 seconds for an app to load.

Of course YOU would, given your abundantly clear preference towards certain companies.

Eh, I'd say the most important feature for any computer, to the average user, is how fast they can check their email and surf the web. That's what 90% of people do with these things. At least in a non-work setting, which is what I would assume we are talking about here.

Apple products can't run flash. There it is. Partial solution: Skyfire browser from the App store which enables flash video.

Android products: Some can run flash. Some need further configuration out of the box. For example, on the SGS2 (the Android communities darling), you have to enable extensions before it'll run. Not something the average user will know how to do.

Do your email and browser talk to you or something? They're drawn onto the screen, you know.

The "drawing" isn't the only thing going on that determines wait time in such a scenario.

Why are you nitpicking? This is the [H] and as [H] users I would like to hope that we all know every hardware counts into making a device or computer work.

So the iPad's faster than your average Android device. So what? There's more Android choices to chose from and there'll be more still.

Quit getting such a hard on about Android losing out to iPad in speed.

Nobody is nitpicking, but if you're going to infer blatant falsehoods, I'm going to refute them. If the only thing involved with browsing the web or email was rendering, then the benchmarks already posted just a few short posts ago would show the iPad ahead by a wide margin given its superior GPU, right? Except it doesn't. Next time you want to call another user out to try and make them look foolish, you should check that you have at least some clue what you're talking about.

Come on man. You know sunspider/javascript benchmarks are a small part of the puzzle and really only tell the strength of the web browser, right? You know that.

There appears to be another benchmark on the link you provided.
