NVIDIA's attempt at AFD humor is the 3dfx Voodoo 590. It's not what you'd call funny (it reads just like a normal NV press release) and it is waaay to obvious to be a "trick." I guess I just don't know what to think of this.

Somehow I'm not sure if this is a joke or if they are actually going to release this. It would probably use less power and generate less heat than the GTX 590...

Ill get some if it supposrts 7 way SLI and if they don't bring out a voodoo 690 with 4 chips on each card. :(

me too... i had 2 voodoo2's running sli 24mb ram.. that was awsome

Well they did get bought out by nvidia (because they went bankrupt) so technically nvidia could release a voodoo series, as they own all the tech/brands (I think). But 3dfx employees did give use crossfire (a few went to ati) and sli. so theres still 3dfx is still with us...

it would be more funny if they didn't always send out press releases of products that doesn't see the light of day for a long time. This is more of a "yeah ok so we're doing it again, ha".

3dfx was still my fav card in the day, wish they were around still to keep nvidia and ati on their toes...

Don't know if anyone has noticed, but its not just that press release- 3dFX has taken over the whole geforce.com website. Better, but still not very funny.

Cute way to treat the competition they murdered.

3DFX was awesome, but they basically shot themselves in the foot. They stuck with proprietary Glide for so long, and then near the end they couldn't even deliver on their new cards (Voodoo 5/6 line), which IIRC didn't even have 32-bit color capability yet.

Rebranding their entire line under 3dfx might not be such a bad idea.

I miss 3DFX and hate Nvidia....that pretty much sums up how I feel about that!

Nvidia, please stick to making noiseless yet underperforming "world's fastest" GPUs... oh, and go fuck yourselves for making (trying) to make fun of a way more inspiring (for the time) company.

Oh I thought it was real funny, this was pretty good if you as me, you guys are to sentimental. 3DFX is long gone, RIP, I do miss my 3dfx add on card that thing was awesome, I remember being wowed when I ran GL quake for the first time.

wow, that only served to make me long for days gone bye.

RIP, 3DFX you will remain in our hearts.

7 Gig of DDR 5?

I'm failing to see how it's funny ripping into an old company they own, that made one the best cards I ever owned, the Voodoo Banshee, nVidia would be up a creek if it wasn't for 3DFX's patents and designs at the time they were bought.

Haha, many people here on the forum like tasteless jokes (on real life matters) but this somehow strikes a nerve when nvidia pulls a completely appropriate prank (on the right day). I loved 3dfx too; my first "hardware accelerated" experience were from the voodoos. However, it's April 1st and (almost) anything goes. Read any of Blizzard's "press release" style April 1st jokes and it's pretty much in the same humor.

I strongly suspect that whoever did the original design weren't willing to lock themselves in a cubicle for another two years to make the rampage. Either they made their pile already, or they weren't going to be suckered again (I suspect they were suckered since it looks like they couldn't get somebody else to step up). Every single board seemed to have the same triangle and texture design, although sometimes with a bit added on.

I loved 3dfx, but understand they were a one hit wonder. What really gets my goat is that at the same time nvidia was winning largely through marketing. Sure they had 32 bits, but not if you wanted a playable framerate. Had the [H]ard review system been in place, voodoo would have been creaming TNT once they showed graphics quality at playable rates. Even worse was the gushing about the original geforce. Nvidia demos at the time used non-textured models to show the "realism advantage" their geometry processors would add. While it certainly helped to eventually get T&L in place, I rather doubt anyone actually ran games that used T&L hardware for more than 1% of the geforce256's life. Nvidia eventually had the boards to live up to the hype, but that was after 3dfx died. You wouldn't think they would want to remind anyone of those days.

The Blizzard equivalent to this would be an April Fools announcement of "Diablo II 2!" featuring the B. North employees being sodomized by Diablo wearing a Vivendi tee while he gargles gold coins.

I still have my old Voodoo3 2000 in a box somewheres. First card i ever had. Such good memories.

And I'm reminded why I hate nvidia.

Why because they successfully executed while their primary competitor at the time failed to?

3dfx going down was 3dfx's own fault. They bought STB and didn't ship anything new for a LONG time, killing their cash on hand and their cash flow nearly simultaneously. It's hard to run a business when the checks bounce.

That said, I recommended Voodoo 3s for as long as they were competitive and I had much love for my Banshee, but by the time the Voodoo 4s shipped 3dfx was behind in both tech and performance.
