Silverstone FT03... matx

Hoping Tony responds to my question soon. Gotta buy a H50 or H70 (if it fits).

Thanks for that link Tony! Looks like the H70 fits perfectly in the FT03. Got my H70 ordered. Just waiting on Amazon to get the FT03S in stock now.

I don't think a self-contained water cooler like the Corsair H50 or H70 will necessarily perform better (for cooling and noise) than a high-end cooler inside the FT03, but it will fit. A guy in China has already installed one:

I was thinking the same. I'm keeping my Mega for this case since it maybe a little warmer inside than usual, thus the H50/70 may not perform as well but we could be wrong.
Decided to go smaller Tony and this case came right in time. Waiting on Amazon to ship mine out also. Great showing at CES Tony! :)

I ordered mine on Friday. I guess I'm the only person in the world who likes silver. I've been waiting for this case since I saw pictures of it from computex. It will replace my SG01 whose front panel recently died. I'm going to be putting a core i7 975k w/ Megahalems Rev. B in it. along with my new GTX 570 and Asus Xonar Essence card. I've purchased sound dampening material that I plan to install in it and hopefully I'll have a near silent case when I'm done.

I was a little worried about HDD heat so I ordered a Caviar Green to go in it instead of the Caviar Black I was planning to get for my new PC.

I should be putting it together this coming weekend. I can't wait to work with such a unique case.

I've been thinking about buying a WD Green also to cut down on heat.
This may force me to buy an SSD eariler than I wanted to, but I'm still holding out for the new Intel SSDs.

I don't know that I would pair a corsair H50 or H70 with the FT03. It's optimized for air cooling.

I think if this case does well, we can probably expect a mini itx version of it. I probably wouldn't be interested in it because I want to have 2 expansion slots so I can hook up my awesome new soundcard, but I think a lot of people here would be.

Rather than spend $70 for a slot-loading DVD drive with no way to pop the disk out outside of software, I got a cheap external DVD player for this case.

Hopefully slot-loading slim drives will become more plentiful and cheaper. I'd love to put a slim slot-loading blu-ray drive in if it were at or under $100.

I sometimes eject the disc by clicking on the drive in Windows, will this drive do the same?

Exactly. But the problem is that good luck when you try to open it not in windows :D:D Which means that you will have to do it manually (I bet there will be an opening to put a something to push it) when into the bios, or installing windows itself...

Does anyone else notice the CPU intake vent is right above the PSU exhaust vent?
Warm air being recycled back into the case.

Ok I IM'ed the dude on QQ, the Chinese messaging program...he said he'll tell me later because he hasn't installed the drives yet. I'll post when he gets back to me.

If it's "optimized" for air cooling though, an H70 would conceivably be an even better option though. Large heatsinks, while great for dissipating heat from a processor, essentially serve as an obstacle for the movement of air (some air goes through/ gets pulled through via the heatsink fan, some has to flow around, etc.).

The H70's block though is very low profile, which means that air flow is essentially unimpeded as it moves from bottom to top.

Considering the similarities between the FT02 and FT03 design(the latter is just a miniature version), the H50/H70 is not gonna be an inferior cooling solution.

The only similarity between FT02 and FT03 is that they turn the MB 90 degrees so venting on top. FT03 doesn't have the strong intake and fans blowing straight upwards like in the FT02.

SS might have advertises that FT03 is a matx version of the FT02, but it is not. Just doesn't have the great design and air flow of the FT02

SS didn't advertise anything about the FT03 being a FT02. That's my observation as a FT02 owner and someone who's been all over this case since its debut.

They're blatantly similar, and if you think their designs are born from different star systems because one has a fan 20mm smaller and doesn't have the 8 or 10 drive bays, you're just nitpicking for the hell of it.

Here's a rundown on how their airflow designs are pretty much from the same pen:
1. Intake fan blows straight to CPU and exhausts right out
2. GPU intake fan does exactly the same
3. Hell, the FT03 might have an edge cuz' the CPU intake is angled at the CPU instead of having ram blocking is airflow. My NB in the FT02 gets very little love from the the game-changing, design-altering 140mm fans; that seems like it's going to change much more for the better in the FT03.

Simple as that. Fans don't make it a new case study in design; they're plenty similar.

Sure, giving a SG line matx case with a FT title has nothing to do with advertising.

FT02 is great because it has the straight un-blocked upward air flow. Look at FT03, compromises everywhere. Those intake fans don't just "20mm" smaller, when you look at the actual intake it much smaller than the fan diameter. Also the fans blow at an angle, not straight up to the exaust.

Ok, I admit FT03 is simmilar to FT02 in "Design" than other cases. But the compromises it makes violates the design what makes FT02 great

What compromises? The basic premise of the FT03's thermal "features" / characteristics are the same. Of course there are little differences though. One is a full size ATX case with lots of room to spare. The other is a mATX case they had to make sacrifices with to keep smaller.

@catcherintherye: thanks, its going to be interesting to see wether the system SST created works or not (aka having the drives in touch with the case to passively dissipate the heat).

That "whatever language" is Chinese, whatever that is.

I thought so, but as as I don't have a clue how to differenciate non-romanian languages (or based on non romanian characters) I didn't want to call it something that It wasn't (like japanese being chinese and so on).

I think Silverstone should be commended for putting out such a unique case, especially after the way people trashed it when it was first revealed. When I first saw the case I was really excited about it, but a lot of people can't wrap their heads around something different. I hope this case does well for Silverstone, because if it doesn't they probably won't do another case like it.

So you expect SFF cases to perform exactly like their towered counterparts 3x its size? And if it doesn't it's deemed as "inferior" design?

Great commentary there.

And I'll take angled airflow any day: since I need to repeat myself, the rest of my components (like the 85c-90c NB) don't get any airflow from top to bottom design in the FT02. It's not all about pointing a fan at a CPU HSF.

Go count the number of RV01 and RV02 haters. If the sentiment was really an indication of most people's perceptions, SS would have shelved their plans long ago. The crying and whining of the few will drown out the silent approvals of many.

Agreed. For me, FT03 is a "love me or hate me". There is just no middle point between, because the design is radically different than everything else you can find on the market. So, either you love it or you don't, and I think that it will be succesful exactly because of that, because its sooo different from all the other offers from the market.

Time well tell, thats the only thing we know for certain :D

EDIT: MSRP for Europe is supposed to be 152€. Damn it, this exchange ratio is plain hilarious ¬¬

Its not 20mm difference its 60mm, and in terms of fan area the difference between 120mm and 180mm is huge, combined that with the reduction from 3x intakes down to 2x and its an insane difference. This pic (drawn to scale) should put it in perspective.

ft02vsft03.jpg

On top of that the 120mm fans are angled so the intake area is around 50%-60% of the fan area, which will give a drop in static pressure.

I do think FT03 is an innovative design, which may have decent cooling for its size (I eagerly await seeing performance data from a range of different set-ups). That said, expecting similar performance to the FT02 is ridiculous. Likewise expecting the same Heatsink\Radiator comparisons (H50\H70 vs Tower heatsinks) from FT02 to apply to FT03 is crazy. Even the SS rep is saying it may not perform well compared to air.

IMO the layout would have been better if Silverstone mounted the PSU like they did in the FT02 and made the case wider and shorter, with a single 180mm fan at the bottom.

He never said it "may not perform well compared to air", he actually said that it simply may not perform better, i.e. parity would exist between the two.

If you think about it from a fluid dynamics standpoint, the low-profile of the H50/H70 allows unimpeded airflow from bottom to top, so at *worst* you'd probably see parity. At best, the H50/H70's low profile allows for a faster removal of hot air from the system, allowing for a slight temperature reduction.

The H50 rad is lower profile, but has much higher fin density compared to most tower heatsinks. I would expect the airflow impedence to be similar

The H50's radiator also accommodates two fans on both sides though, so in a push-pull configuration, the greater fin density should be of less concern (essentially the same reason why dual-fan heatsinks will often outperform single-fan heatsinks of roughly same design, all other factors being equal).

If someone was only using a single fan on the H50 (which I admittedly have seen pictures and videos of before), then I could potentially see it being a slight issue. Ultimately though, it's still highly doubtful the H50 would result in a decrease in performance that's noticeable. If anything, it'd simply likely be a waste of someone's money since equal performance from a cheaper air cooling solution could be had.

well, to really screw with you, Japanese has three written charactor forms, one of them being traditional chinese (complex form). Taiwan (silverstone's home :)) uses Traditional.

Don't tell that to the Japanese! NOTHING from Japan originated from China!!

blahblahblah fan

So you also think just because they use different fans and have different amounts of airflow that the FT02 and FT03 are so universally different in design?
Ok.

And if they made the FT02 into anything but the trash can it's right now, I wouldn't be buying one. Guess you should present a proposal for FT04... (right after they give the FT03 a one piece side panel...)

I think you are mixing concept and design.

FT02 & FT03 shares the same concept, but in reality, their design were different.

Unless you think FT03 is a perfect case with no improvement can be made, of course there will be a FT04, or SUGO something, as it should be

No point to argue on this further. Let's wait for the real performance number, I personaly interested in the silver FT03 and DaBox 100. Getting a new case and Silver Arrow / HR-02 next month for my old i7 1366 GTX570 setup, planning to OC.

I should have some pics later tonight. I won't be putting much in it until the weekend though. I can give some quick impressions... I was surprised with how much plastic was in the case. The brackets that allow you to attach 3.5" HDDs are both black plastic, as is the SSD bracket. Attaching the SSD to the bracket was very difficult to get on. I first tried screwing my SSD from the side, but I found I had to screw it in from the bottom, it just didn't work otherwise. Once I did that it was very easy.

I was planning on installing a large amount of acoustic foam in the case, but after opening it up and really looking around I found that there wasn't much room for it. I also decided against putting acoustic foam on the HDD side because of potential heat issues. The manual had a lot of information in it. The part that jumped out at me the most was that you can't secure the top cover on if you have a standard DVI->VGA adapter that comes with most video cards. I happen to still have a CRT 19" monitor (which as of this week is finally dying) so I won't be able to use that top until I get it replaced.

Even though I was surprised by all the plastic inside the case, it feels like a much more considered and refined case than my SG01, though perhaps a bit more fragile.
