Minecraft

If you buy it, you can download a standalone version. I think the free trial is still going, too, which allows you to download the game.

Do we have a [H] server?

Nice info, but I'm in OS X, and unfortunately the linked files are only for XP and 7. :( Oh well, it is in alpha after all. Still an awesome game.

Hopefully the servers will be fixed pretty soon, then you should just get the sound/music files downloading automatically when you login via minecraft.exe. Hopefully that will be this week.

Hmm I don't have OS-X, but Google found that the resources folder in OS X should be in this location:

username/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resources/

Try putting the downloaded files there, hopefully it should work!

What is Notch planning with this game? like actual quests or something?

I was doing the free weekend thing and I think I've pretty much done everything, built a house, tunnels all over, found diamonds and all that stuff, made diamond tools, armor, red stone doors and everything over the course of what 2-3 days?

I guess building stuff is fun and I've yet to try MP...I'll wait till the game is actually in beta or something

(I know its Alpha)

There's going to be an adventure mode, but that's coming long after release iirc.

There is no ultimate goal to the game, your only limit is your own creativity.

I just understood the fact you can actually play the game right now. Just login with no nick and password and voila! but no sound for now.

It looks interesting, but not interesting enough to make me install Java. I'd rather see it as standalone.

This is my biggest gripe about this game. It looks awesome but nothing, nothing at all, is worth installing Java. May spin up a VM and put Java on that to play this once in a while as it really does look awesome (not graphically obviously but game play is king!).

This actually makes me wonder whether this could be packaged into a Linux VM using VMware ACE. There are some pretty small distros around and ACE would be the perfect tool for that.

Huh? Java is used by lots of websites, I don't know why you wouldn't have it installed..
Then again, I'm use to installing it on people's PC all day at work.

While I am not the biggest fan of Java, I have never had issues with it to warrant not having it installed.

JavaScript is used by lots of websites, Java is something entirely different. There are probably some websites who use it but they can usually be avoided.

why does people hate java so much?

Because Java is the devil. It's a bloated piece of junk that clogs up your system, annoys you with trying to push Open Office and other stuff during updates, etc.

It had it's place back in the day and still does in the mobile market but on desktops the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) ought to be a thing of the past.

---

Hope they sort the game server out soon™, I will try and create a lolnix based virtualized app for redistribution without JRE requirement.

EDIT: This fan-made trailer makes me want to have the creator's babies, if I were female that is, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaMTedT6P0I

I'll give this a try, many thanks!

Yes, I know the difference, and I was referring to Java itself.

At a professional/IT level, Java really can't be avoided. Example: ADP. Ya know, the biggest payroll company in the world, requires it for their eTime system.
It's still probably the best choice for cross-platform development.

I'm afraid I'm not creative enough for this game. I see some of the stuff posted on those Youtube videos and think there isn't a chance I could come up with stuff like that in a million years.

servers are back up for buying the game.

their stats page states that :
In the last 24 hours, 8628 people registered, and 4254 people bought the game.

thats a lot for such a small indie developper. Kudos to them!

It's being featured in a 4 part Penny-Arcade comic now, too. Notch is going to be f-ing rich before the game even comes out!

Sad thing is, I think most people would will want to buy it will already have bought it, and won't get nearly as many sales post-release.

Minecraft is only one of a handful of games that have taken the approach of "Buy me now at a low price and get Alpha/Beta access!" The other game being Natural-Selection 2. I'll be interested to see if anyone buys it after release.

I think the novelty will wear off, though it's fun and cash well spent. However, I can't really see spending dozens of hours on it, but then again I almost never finish any game (not that there is a finish).

Not only are the sites few and far between that require it, the usefuleness to exploits ratio isn't good enough to make it worthwhile. If I encounter a site that requires it then they're not worth dealing with, and I soon find other options.

Isn't this the same guy who had his Paypal account frozen and then piled up 600,000 euro in receipts over a weekend? If so, he's already rich.

i just lost an hour ... digging cave for my house.

i need to find some metal ore !

"708481 registered users, of which 182965 (25.82%) have bought the game."
182965*10*0.97=1.7mil ...., ok, so ...., this guy made 1.7 million dollars with this game ...., am I missing something (other than the taxes he will have to pay)?

It's 30% tax where he lives, and he recently hired an employee, so he won't see nearly that amount, but if he doesn't fuck up then yeah, he's set for life.

I must be doing something wrong. I have never had a java exploit and I check out a TON of porn.

You'll get one before me. :D I also don't like Java on performance grounds.

edit:

I also don't use Adobe Reader/Acrobat (Foxit), Quicktime, Windows Media Player (MPC), Catalyst Control Center (Ati Tray Tools), and various other things people will install without thinking twice. They're either too bloated, exploit ridden, or both. I like simple straight to the point functionality, just because my computer can run it doesn't mean it should. I'm not a fan of browsers with 30 different plugins/addons, and toolbars stacked on top of each other. This turns me on, whereas this turns me off. Etc. I long for the day when I can drop Flash permanently as well.

If I can get away with not installing something I will. I'm kind of crazy like that. If I have all apps closed and the task bar open, the CPU usage better reflect that and sit idle at 0% usage.

Sigh, my enjoyment of Minecraft was short lived. I get a EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) when playing, usually can't go further than a couple minutes into it. This is on Windows XP SP3, RE version: 6.0_21-b07, running on VMware Workstation. Makes me a saaaaad panda.

Try downgrading to JRE 6.0_20. I've seen 21 cause issues before.

Also...
"In the last 24 hours, 24100 people registered, and 12212 people bought the game."
Jesus... that is crazy.

In the gaming world, yes that is true.
But like I said, in the professional/IT world, Java is basically unavoidable.

how does the server-hosting work? Do you have to run it on a seperate server or computer? Me and my two friends cant host a game, if one of us does, he can join it himself, but as soon as one of us tries to connect the computer totally freezes up

Did I mention Jesus fukin Christ?!

It's just gaining momentum, now that Seananners, X, RPS, hell even Wired are doing stories on Minecrack.

IMO, his server going down and opening up a "free weekend" was prolly the best thing that ever happened to him. He's already a multi-millionaire from this game. That's just batshit insane!
I knew I should have tried harder at c++

It's coded in Java.

Notch also seems to have struck a very elemental chord with gamers in Minecraft. It seems to appeal to about everyone.

just lost another night at this game... I love diging deep... and those creepers really freaked me out 2-3 times.
