Preordered mine at best buy, dying in wait for it.

Gonna be my first Android phone, so what's out there that I NEED to know about?

Hopefully the battery on the Droid X will last longer than the EVO. I'm waiting to find out before I order one. Those 4.3" screens look great but coming from a Blackberry the battery life on these new smarthphones is a tough pill to swallow.

I'd love to save some money by switching away from AT&T. I have the Droid X and the Galaxy S line of phones in my sights. I just can't put down money for a phone until it's released. Had my preorder gone through for the Iphone 4 I'd be unhappy and locked in a contract, same deal with the Evo.

Supposedly the x gets much better battery then the evo, a tester at HowardForums said he got over 9 1/2 talk time

Damage Control rom gives you a lot of battery life back but you'll have to root your Evo for that.

I would if I wasn't working in Canada. Can't use a foreign ESN on the two CDMA providers up here. It'll be six months or more before a NAM GSM version comes out (if it comes out at all).

Think about how you used the Blackberry. Screen was probably off 95% of the time, you didn't surf much because it was painful and slow, you didn't run many apps because there weren't many worth running, etc. You basically talked, texted and emailed on it, and maybe used it for an MP3 player.

Going from a Bold 9000 to a Milestone (GSM Droid), I had a bit of battery shock too, but once I got over the new and shiny and screen never off for long phase, I was able to get a full and productive day out of the phone. It's even better now that I'm able to under-volt it. I'm also careful to use WiFi instead of the 3g radio whenever possible, keep GPS turned off it I don't need it, reduce the update frequency on shit like Facebook or Twitter, and make sure all my non-Exchange email is coming in through Gmail, so it's battery-saving push instead of battery-eating pull.

The Droid X should be even better, it's a more efficient 45nm vs 65nm CPU, with the same GPU and the same amount of pixels to push (though with a bigger backlight). All with a larger battery and better battery management software. Clock speed should be a non-issue, since it's dynamic anyway, clocking down to 250mhz at idle, and only bursts up to full speed for short periods of time, which has always proven to be more energy efficient than slow-but-steady fixed speed computing.

All that said, a good Android device begs to be used more than a feature-phone or email appliance like the BB, and will eat through battery faster as a consequence. Price you pay for all that functionality.

I was seriously debating the Droid X but it's a little to long for me and the Incredible is getting 720p capture..etc..in a software update..so Incredible it is..hopefully this week.

I'm coming from a BB Tour so I guess i'll experience your shock too. What you said about how you use a BB is quite true, I'm exhausted of having a smartphone thats a pure pain to use.

Btw, what apps and stuff have you been using? any advice on easy transitioning from a BB?

Not much to prep for, just the usual stuff when moving to a new phone, exporting contacts and calendar stuff. Which can be pretty easy if you use Google tools to push all that stuff up to the Google cloud first.

And you'll probably not like the email apps on Android at first. Google has a ways to go to match BB's email. That said, it doesn't suck, it's just not as excellent as the Blackberry implementation.

I surf a lot, use maps a fair bit, read a shitload of books, use the Exchange calendar and email like a fiend, draft Word documents on it, watch movies (really!), etc. And every once in a while I'll actually call or text somebody. :)

I was on the road for 24 days back in May/June, and left my laptops and netbooks at home, just used my Milestone, and got by more than fine.

I will be grabbing an X at release. I think I will go woth a 1 year contract this time around.

Since my "new every two" is up in early August I figure I'll wait until then and see what's available. The X looks a little big, the Incredible has the reported problematic battery life, and the Samsung one just gives me a feeling they aren't going to support it. Gah.

I'd LOVE to get a Droid X, but I haven't owned my Motorola Droid for even a year. Paying retail price for the Droid X would kill me. I'm very happy with my Droid but moving from a BB Bold 9000 was a small adjustment. The biggest adjustment was typing. The pull out keyboard on the Droid sucks (compared to my old BB Bold), but I'm used to it. Typing on the virtual keyboard sucks so I use the peck and hunt method most of the time. :)
I don't use corporate/exchange email so the issues noted above aren't an issue. I'm happy with the gmail client. Beyond that learn as you go and have fun.

Looking forward to switching from my iPhone 3g, (my contract is up) and picking up a Droid X...

I'll be dumping Apple and AT&T for a Droid X. I like the Iphone, but Apple's crap coupled with AT&T's horrible service is just too much. I also like the idea of Android being open source. Opens up a whole realm of possibilities. Iphones are so locked down it's ridiculous.

I'm surprised to see two people leaving iphone and getting an android phone, Seems nutty to me, but more power to you. AT&T is a certainly plenty of reason to leave.

On the Android forums there a couple people with iPhone 4's leaving it for the Droid X.

I might be getting my Droid X end of this week. :D

+1 for getting rid of the 3GS and will be going for a Droid X. My kids like my iphone because of the games and such, but they'll just have to get over it.

I'd love one but I'm going to wait and see if the Droid X can be rooted and flashed with custom roms/kernels. Supposedly Moto is going ot use encrypted boot loaders on the Droid X and Droid 2 which means flashing custom roms/kernels is more or less impossible.

Im just looking for something different. AT&ts service has been good, just no 3g here where I live. (but I have wifi almost everywhere I go) I was going to give my upgrade to my old lady and just take her 3gs. But her 3gs is 1 week old enough that it cant be jail broken with OS4...(not yet anyway)....That, and then I saw the Droid X, and I REALLY like it.

I think you underestimate the power of the community.

TMobile is cheaper yet, if that's an option.

I'd reconsider the Galaxy S devices, as well. I can't find the chart I used, but IIRC, the Galaxy devices still one-up it in the GPU department.

Nothing beats BB for business. You can get over that right now...

That said, the battery shock is a shock. I see it, as long as it can get through the day, to where I can charge it when I go to bed: I can care less how long it lasts. The Evo, depending how you use it, may not make it through the day. Droid X, Galaxy, etc... They should all do you fine (iPhone comparable... IIRC the Galaxy devices even spank the iPhone).

Yea, the Samsung worries me as well.
However... Custom ROMs and rooted in the first week? Seems promising that the custom community will be able to maintain these devices even without Samsung. IDK. I'm worried about it myself, but it's such a sweet phone that I don't think I can keep away from it. We know 2.2 will be coming. The question is how easy 3.0 will be to stick on it.
You also seem to forget that Samsung is releasing this device on all four major carriers... They're pushing it hard. I'd say, more than any other device, they'll probably support this one the most.

You also fail to understand the actual meaning of an encrypted bootloader.

And here,

The MIlestone (EU version of Droid) has a digitally encrypted bootloader and still has not been even close to being cracked. Without a MAJOR leak from Moto, it's virtually impossible to flash custom roms/kernels.

Samsung's drivers were supposedly encrypted, too... But it turns out they aren't now. IDK, I'm not a dev so I really have no idea, just what I've heard. This may be one of those same things. Plus, my info is going off the international Galaxy S. I'd assume the US ones like the Vibrant will be the same way, but who knows.

The drivers are a bit different than the bootloader, see here, post #8 it's talked about a bit more in the thread as well

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7016355&styleid=15

Samsung actually released the drivers open source but they still have certain things encrypted hence it would be hard to port over Froyo right away to the Galaxy.

Moto's situation is far worse since you'd be unable to flash anything to it (recovery, etc) Like I said, take a look at the Milestone, same hardware as Droid and stuff but has an encrypted bootloader. It's not even close to being cracked. Sucks to be Milestone owners :(

Ideally, someone at Moto would leak the required files but it'd have to be a leak from only a few top engineers and that could cost them their job :( as Moto has specifically stated that they would being to lock down every phone they make starting from the Droid X onward.

Time with tell. Still even if customs kernels are not available with Froyo and JIT the X will see be a nice device. Admittedly the [H] always want more though

"It's either compiled or encrypted"..... Hmmm
I'd take my chances with that versus the encrypted boot loader then, LOL...
Sad fact is either you can buy an older hardware generation (Aria, Droid, etc) and have freedom or you can buy the newer stuff like the Galaxy S, Droid X, lose freedom but have more power.

I think I'm going to buy the Galaxy S regardless. I'm hoping by the time Gingerbread (3.0) rolls around, the Samsung drivers will be figured out.

Just root won't net you the speed increases to 2.2, or 3.0... unless there's something I haven't discovered yet.

Root at least would allow you certain freedoms such as removing useless garbage apps such as the Amazon MP3 app at least :D

People are saying that you can overclock, remove bloatware and wifi tether for free with root access but you wouldn't be able to load custom ROMs. I'd be fine with that. It would be nice to be able to do themes, but Moto's stock theme is pretty good IMO.

edit: We also don't know what motivated Moto to release the droid 1 unencrypted. Maybe it was Verizon. Maybe they're trying to distance themselves from the stone age when they used to lock down devices like crazy. We'll see when the real hackers get their hands on these things.

Maybe this will all be a non-issue. The droid X is more like the droid 1 than it is like the milestone (CDMA, US carrier... etc). We'll see.

Friend and his wife bought the new iPhone 4 and they ended up being very disappointed. We are all 3 going to Verizon the morning of the 15th to get the Droid X.

The iPhone is great but the very tiny scree really hampers games, web, etc. Sure, you can do it but it's a lot of eye strain and it's nothing you can really dive into for any length of time. I've owned an iPod Touch 8gig Gen2 for two years and I just cannot use that small screen.

More or less a gimmic really to me. Seems cool, but, can you really use it? Kinda .. sorta I guess for a short period of time and with eye strain

I just had a friend who got the iPhone 4 and he ended up returning it to go back to his blackberry cause of the horrible email. I told him to go get the Droid X.

I have the Incredible on order, but I'm heading to a Verizon store to play with the Droid X on the 15th to see what I think. My salesperson told me if I like the Droid X better, just bring my unopened Incredible in when I get it and I can exchange it. I'm looking forward to seeing which I prefer.

It comes out in a week, but I still can't decide what to do. I wish the Galaxy S phones were available at the same time so I could do a side-by-side comparison.

Differences between the Droid X and Fascinate...
GPU on the Droid X is worse than the iPhone's. Droid X is capable of 14m triangles/sec... Galaxy is 90m/sec.

Droid X has 8GB of internal memory I think, the Fascinate won't have the 16GB on board that its GSM counterparts will, just 1GB.

Might be more of a preference thing but the Droid X doesn't have the Super AMOLED.

Galaxy S is the only mobile device at this point (here, anyway) supporting Bluetooth 3.0

5MP camera on the Galaxy, 8MP on Droid X (As we see with the iPhone, MP isn't everything... The iPhone's 5MP camera looks better than the Evo's 8MP IMO)

Droid X is physically bigger in every dimension. It's also much heavier, 158g vs 119g on the Galaxy.

Battery life will be similar. They both use newer RAM and 45nm processors... I'll give the battery edge to the Galaxy because it's display is smaller and also Super AMOLED will draw less than LCD.

So take your pick :D
Galaxy is a better size, weight, and graphically, IMO. Between the two I'd go for the Galaxy (biggest reason being the GPU) but they're both great devices.

Yea but the fascinate is boring and ugly looking. I mean, thats up to preference but yea.

I've never been a fan of Samsung or LG phone design.

The skin also tries way too hard to look like the iphone and basically just ends up looking like a feature phone. You'll probably be able to remove it but who knows.

Only relevant if you don't use a case, really.
