Intel 34nm SSD will have a 60% reduction in price!

What was the price on each drive at Newegg? (It now just shows as Deactivated.)

The 80GB was at $215 or $225 IIRC... Seems it sold out in a matter of hours, the 160GB lasted more like a day and was at $440-ish or thereabouts.

Newegg doesn't do preorders. They just change their button to a greyed out "auto-notify", like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233085

I'm not sure why they actually took it down. Maybe all the traffic was getting hard on their servers.

This is hardly the first time they de-activate an item when it goes out of stock even if it's new, they do it all the time (I see it a lot w/some video card models). I've no clue why they do it, maybe it has to do with their servers and auto-notify getting hammered, maybe they just don't have an ETA on the next shipment, or maybe it's got something to do with the defect/recall that someone else already linked.

Just an FYI if you're looking to get one ASAP.

ProVantage shows 50 of the 80GB in stock as I type this for $234.91 each.

I dont see any 160GB models in stock there right now.

Not the best of Reseller Ratings, but not the worst either.

Personally I'd rather go through NewEgg, but who knows when they'll see stock again.

I'd like to have one by the time the Win7 RTM hits TechNet for download, but not sure what I want to do at this point.

I think im gonna hold off for now.

***Public Service Announcement***

Intel has informed me of a bug in the X25-M G2 shipping firmware. This bug is specific to setting a hard drive password in your BIOS. If you have set a BIOS HDD password, then subsequently change or disable that password, the SSD may become inoperable. Intel is correcting the issue in firmware and will be posting a fix shortly. In summary:

* DO NOT set a BIOS HDD password on an X25-M G2.
* If you already have, DO NOT CHANGE OR DISABLE the BIOS HDD password.

It will be safe to do either of the above once the X25-M G2 is flashed to a newer firmware to be released by Intel shortly. Firmware, when available, can be reached by this not-yet-live link.

***End Public Service Announcement***

Heard about this, but who seriously uses the HDD BIOS password function (and doesn't use unsecured, Bitlocker, truecrypt, etc etc). Responsible of Intel to recall and fix though.

In fact brings to mind the Pentium FPU bug which affected 1 out of every 10^15 float calculations or something. That one also had almost negligible impact but resulted in massive publicity and recall of all the affected chips also.

I doubt this issue really affects many people except for a few laptop users who have hard drive passwords due to corporate/government policy.

I think I just hit steady state performance:

"Steady state":

Subjectively the system is a tiny bit slower (unnoticeable really, e.g word taking 0.5 instead of 0.3 seconds to launch). That may also be because of the antivirus I installed though.

What about the 340GB size SSD? Engadget said they'll be having it. And what about the "whisper" size 500GB, any truth on that?

340GB ? 80 * 2 = 160, 80 * 4 = 320. If Intel makes any other models, you can be sure it will be in steps in 80GB, so neither 340 or 500GB model is coming anytime soon.

JimHsu, Hmm, seems the only major difference was the 4k writes almost being halfed. How much of the drive's capacity are you using. Wonder if trim would fix this once implemented...

34.5 GB free out of 74.5 GB

I did do some massive shuffling of files from storage to SSD and back (was setting up a version control system)

Yes, TRIM will fix it. Note the random write # is almost exactly what Anand is getting, and I suspect this problem will be completely fixed w/ TRIM. G2 (as PCPER reports) is optimized for combining random writes (hence a 40% improvement from 20 something MB/s for G1) at the expense of some fragmentation.

This pic should make it obvious:

Don't get me wrong though, the drive is still as fast as ever. When you're talking order of magnitude differences from hard drives, it is all pretty meaningless.

Those who are talking about large Intel SSDs have apparently missed the last couple of pages. Intel has stated they're not releasing their larger SSDs (Stated "300GB") until Q2 2010.

A solid performance, esp. with the random writes. Those controller optimizations certainly show up in the massive 4K 64 thread read performance.

Here is a Vertex for comparison:

Thanks Jimhsu. Goes to show just how different the intel G2's priorities are... a great SSD for some but not all, depending on need...

"Not all" as in hardcore video encoding guys? Maybe, but I don't know any hardcore video encoding guys.

Wow, I got the rolleyes - so mature. It's like I pissed in y'all's Cheerios or something.

I should have said "most" instead of "some." And yes, the priorities ARE the normal desktop user.

I was more noticing how drastically different the G2's overall emphasis is over, say, the Vertex.

I'm using a G1 at work and will be ordering 5 G2's for my team as soon as they come in stock, in case you thought I was bashing them or something. Defensive posts...

Yea it really just depends on what is important.

I mean for my main workstation the OCZ summits/vertexes are my choice because im doing large sequential writes, and I can really benefit from the higher speed writes which the Intel's just dont have.

Im not really sure why people got upset about that?
I mean since when is a HDD/SSD a one size fits all solution?

After buying an OCZ Apex at launch and using it for a few months, I'm ready to see what a REAL SSD is like. I guess I'll just have to wait patiently for these intel drives to come back in stock.

It's funny that I paid $220 for my 60gb apex in January and now I can buy a top-of-the-line 80gb SSD for just $10 more. This technology really is advancing at an incredible speed...and I love it! :D

Anyone wanna buy a 60gb apex? ;)

Sequential writes can be an issue for some. It's unfortunate because the writes are basically inline with a 5400RPM hard drive. If you use hibernate on a constant basis then it's definitely a handicap.

Sounds to me like your SSD has reached its Apex.

Yeah, I had 2 Gskill Titans, which are the Apex's, and I very quickly realized they weren't going to cut it. I knew I was taking a risk with the JMicron crap, but wanted to get into SSDs so bad, I couldn't wait. Luckily I offloaded them very quickly. It's actually been very fun to see the technology progress. I can't imagine what intel's G4 or G5 Drives will be like. All I know is I desperately hope for fierce competition!

For those of you who have received your Intel drives, did they come with 2.5" to 3.5" adapters?

Well the good news is that everyone seems to like these.
The bad news is that they are now out of stock, or costs 25% more than MSRP

I doubt anyone is going to bundle those automatically, but most vendors selling the SSDs should have it as an option. I do recall that I got lucky back when I ordered my Gen 1 80GB Intel that I found it with an effectively free bay adapter (the adapter was $20, but $20 off then bought with the SSD).

Just to confirm: I got my G2 160GB X25-M from Newegg earlier today - it didn't come with any sort of 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter.

EDIT: Amusingly enough, I apparently got the exact SSD that Newegg took pictures of. The S/N itself is blurred out, but the barcodes match up - the only reason I bothered to look was I noticed the box had already been opened, and was thus suspicious. It's not every day you get to slide an internationally recognized model into your laptop... :D

No, but it did come with a little black plastic bracket to slightly increase the thickness of the drive for some applications.

Oh yeah, it also came with an "SSD's Rock!" sticker (seriously :D ).

Screenshots or it didn't happen ;)

Just kidding, of course, but a pic would be fun to see. I didn't have a chance to look at the drives we did get in before they were all shipped out to customers.

Yes, true... But only those labeled as kit - i bought a Kingston X25-M without the adaptor. Torqx can be bought only with kit.

The Kingston V series can only be bought as a bundle as well, what's your point?

Mine was, if you want the Intel drive bundled with an adaptor, Kingston will probably have a solution for you in the coming weeks.

Bundled with the Kingston drives too. Kingston rebrands the intels for their M and E series so I imagine when they switch the M series bundles over to the G2 Intels, you'll be able to get it with an adaptor.

The obligatory "My SSD Rocks" sticker (apologies for the crappy mobile cam... didn't feel like getting the SLR):

LOL, I got mine in tonight and it came with the sticker as well :D... I'm going to put it on my case I think :p.
