Its only "wrong" because some control freak said it is. If you are driving 350 mph, even though the sign says 25 mph, and you don't ruin anybodies property or kill anyone, there is nothing "wrong" about it. And spare me the "well, something COULD happen..." argument. A meteor COULD hit the earth and this whole argument would be moot. Monkeys COULD fly out of your butt.

Speed limits are simply money makers for government. If I go "too fast" near you or someone else, why must I pay a third party who is not involved at all? How does that make any sense?

Actually, if you want to get all technical.... you have to know your tire ratings and the tire ratings have to support the speed. You do tend to wear the road the faster you drive, especially speeds like those, you also increase emissions pollution greatly at those speeds.

So one could argue based on technicality that you are really harming others as they have to pay for roads and they have to pay for the pollution you produce.

You could also argue that speeding relates to 31% of all car fatalities, which means the tax payer has to be impacted as highways are closed and medical services are dispatched.

The problem is that you might be a safe driver, but the other guy is not. You might be focused and professional, the other guy might be texting and not paying attention.

The other problem is that you use the argument that nothing has happened and we might just as well say a meteorite can hit the earth... well it takes one mistake on your part or your counter part.... or it takes one simple mechanical/tire issue.... and you will become part of that statistic. Simply saying that no one gets killed speeding is a false and dangerous belief.

this is the US where most people drive at the posted speed limit and going over the posted speed threatens others because of the chance that they will not see you coming when changing lanes and etc. That is the dangerous part. While he may have the autobahn, we certainly don't here and it's done in the safety of people.

There are some laws specific to the Autobahn that make it safer for higher speeds.

Wikipedia to the rescue!

Traffic laws and enforcement
... Notable laws include the following:
...
Drivers using the left lane when the other lanes are free may be fined by autobahn police.

Overtaking on the right (undertaking) is forbidden, except in traffic jams where it may be practiced with caution. The fact that the car overtaken is illegally occupying the left-hand lane is not an acceptable excuse. In these cases the police will routinely stop and fine both drivers.

Not allowing faster cars to overtake one's own car if the traffic situation allows it (e.g. by occupying the left-hand lane for a longer period of time) may be considered coercion.
...
Fines for tailgating were increased in May 2006.
...
Tires must be approved for the vehicle's top speed. Tires for lower speeds (i.e., cheaper than high-speed tires) are only allowed if they are marked as Winter tires (M+S or M/S). In this case the driver must have a sticker in the windshield as a reminder of the maximum speed.

Simply put, cars must be capable and "driving like an idiot" is punishable.

I like the one I bolded. About two weeks ago someone nearly ran me into a concrete guard rail while I was trying to merge. There was plenty of space and I had matched my speed, then as I was merging the guy sped up to cock-block me. Not like he was getting to his destination any faster, because he had to hit brakes hard to keep from rear-ending the tractor trailer in front.

As always someone on the fucking Front Page News board misses the point. How does it feel to be so dense?

What point was that again?

I'm talking about the fact that while he's talking about safety, this is the US where most people drive at the posted speed limit and going over the posted speed threatens others because of the chance that they will not see you coming when changing lanes and etc. That is the dangerous part. While he may have the autobahn, we certainly don't here and it's done in the safety of people. High speed limits such as 80MPH may be fine as they're safer than at 60MPH but they're posted which everyone follows. Someone going over is recklessly endangering themselves and others.

What endangers people is people not using their mirrors. That is the recklessness that keep away wrecklessness.

Spoken like a true teenager.

160mph is fine at the racetrack. On a standard highway, you're going too fast to predict what other people might do. Someone makes a lane change without a thorough head-check, and suddenly, you have no time to slow down, and you're dead, when at 80mph, you might have been able to react. Add to that that the kid was 17, which in the US means 1-2 years of driving experience absolute tops (and most of that under supervision), and I guarantee you the concept of safety, reaction time, and respect for others on the road was far from the first thing on his mind.

160mph isn't "keeping safety in mind". It's double the speed limit on Montana highways, and more than that everywhere else in the US. If it was my kid, he'd be looking at loss of car, license, insurance, and grounded until the next Presidential election.

He never said 160 MPH on a road with other cars who don't expect those speeds is safe.

I hope you don't have a license, as you certainly don't deserve one.

Everyone speeds. Even you.

Someone filming their speed is not keeping saftey in mind.

If American cars had no radios, cellphone use was a serious driving infringement and we had faster speeds (like some countries), I could see getting up in arms about the "speed kills propaganda". But I can't see it NOT being a problem in America as it stands.

Filming yourself go fast to show off to your friends is probably not being safe.

That's how it is everywhere. Up to 20 miles is okay depending on how much your local law enforcements are dicks. But this kid was obviously going twice the speed limit and that's definitely not okay and is recklessly endangering anyone who was on the road at that time.. Everyone on the road expects to be within their speed limit up to +20/-5.

No, up to 20 is not everywhere or the norm as far as cops are concerned. Cops will ticket you when they want, regardless of how OK you think your speed is.

Our highway system was designed for 120+ MPH continuous travel in mind. If people got over to the right when not passing, signal when they change lanes, actually used their rearview mirrors for something besides looking at themselves, and looked into their blind spots before changing lanes it wouldn't be an issue. But instead of enforcing those rules they institute restrictive speed limits solely to give the people not paying attention more time to react.

Not sure abou tthe 120MPH thing, but everything else in this post is quoted for truth.

Don't forget recording it which is a big distraction from the road.

The friend doing the recording wasn't the distraction for the driver, it was the "He did it extra stupidly, in the dark, with passengers, and with next to no experience." that Jakalwarrior mentioned.

interesting, some actually think it’s ok to even argue about this, speeding was my middle name, my parents never allowed me to use their car, crushed the first three cars I bought, learned the lesson the hard way, now I rarely go over 60mph, still… I can’t help not sharing this

looool

So you think doing 160mph while all other cars are doing 60-70mph is safe? The only place anyone can safely do 160mph is on a race track. Speed limits are placed for a reason. Placing your own life in jeopardy is one thing - doing so for others on public roads is another.

I suspect anyone pissing and moaning about not being allowed to drive as fast as they want either: (a.) are under the age of 30, or (b.) have no kids.

A couple posts up he said exactly what he meant before. Yet you still managed to misconstrue it, regardless.

We have these laws here also. One is not supposed to stay in the left lane. But no one gives a shit... and when the police enforces it... you get people all up in arms screaming it is a police revenue generator, etc.

For some insane reason this makes sense to me.....maybe because I ride a crotch rocket.

Ok, most people seem to be giving him crap because he's defending going fast and he's from Germany where it's legal in some places to do so.

Do you know why they can do that there? The inspection program for cars (TUV) is *way* more strict than the inspection programs in the US (just look at what's on the road in rural areas.) That covers safety of the car.

To get a license in Germany, if I remember correctly, it's over $1000 USD and two years in school. That *might* lead to a better skill of driver than we have in the US (but nowhere near the skill of Norwegians.) If you're 16 years old you can take a written and a short driving test and get a license.

I'm not defending the video, even though I've done the same exact thing.

AH HA HA HA HA!!!! Inspections here in Germany are a joke. Good brakes, good lights, good to go.

As for getting a license, it's $600-$1200 to go through a school and test fees. You have to get your license in a year, from the start date of your school. If you don't, you'll have to pay to go to school again.

It's no different than going through the schools in the US, just more expensive. You don't have to be in the school for a year. Hell, not even 6 months. You just need to get your 12 hours of driving and 14 hours of theory and you can test.

If you fail, 4 more hours of driving in your school, then go back and retest. Rinse and repeat until you pass. Course the 4 hour driving lessons cost money and a retest also costs money.

Drivers in Germany have been some of the worst I've seen. I've almost been side swiped so many times, they tailgate like nobody's business, and they don't know what a signal indicator is. Hell, they don't even follow their own rule of "stay in the fucking right side lane on the autobahn if you aren't fucking passing anyone."

I am a pretty fast driver and nothing pisses me off more than these German drivers. They make me reckless as hell. The right lane will be empty and they're sitting in the left lane, causing me to go from 180 kph to 80 kph. I will pass them using the right lane (which is illegal). The law, sit in the right lane unless passing.

It's also nice when both lanes are being used by two slow drivers and it'll be another 10-15 mins before the one in the left lane fully passes the other. I will pass them using the shoulder lane (which is illegal). Why bother passing if you're only doing like 1-2 mph faster than the other person. Just slow down and go with them instead.

I picked up these kind of habits from other German drivers. They also seem to be fed up with their own countrymen's driving.

I've never been on the autobahn but have known quite a few people who have and the difference that they tell me is in the rules of the road so to speak. For example, one my buddies came back and said that you could drive as fast as you want in some sections of the autobahn because people only pass on the left side lane and then immediately move back to the right to cruise. You couldn't ever do that here in the states because you have inconsiderate people who throw their car into cruise control and sit in the left lane without any consideration for faster traffic who would like to pass.

You can't do that here in Germany either, as you have inconsiderate ppl who decide to sit in the left lane. Better yet, they'll cut you off while you're doing a high speed. Nothing like having to slam on your brakes to avoid an accident into another car.

There's also sections of the Autobahn that have an unlimited speed limit, but if you actually attempted to do 180+ kph, expect to fly off the road. Germans don't see to know how to repave the whole road after some type of construction. They just patch it here and there. Then they'll patch the patches if they do more work. Quite a few of the autobahns are nothing but patchwork.

I once saw on the History Channel's Modern Marvels a piece on the autobahn and German driving behavior and they said that cars built over there for Germans don't even have cupholders or much of a radio as they believe a car is meant to be driven and nothing else! Here in the states we have dumbasses like those kids who look at as a form of pleasure and damn near kill themselves and others on the road.

Its all in the driving mentality

Must have been a really old show. All their cars have am/fm/cd etc in them. Have been for years. No cupholders is just a non-US thing. Cars in Europe and Asia in general don't seem to have cupholders.

Damn thread is moving too fast.

You could also argue that speeding relates to 31% of all car fatalities, which means the tax payer has to be impacted as highways are closed and medical services are dispatched.

This is the same argument they use for the dog tax. Lots of dogs escape and bite people so because you own a dog that could potentially get out and bite someone you owe us (a third party not related to anyone bitten) money. Sorry, I'm not buying that logic. Until my dog actually does get out and bite someone I owe nothing. And if that does happen, I owe only the person who was harmed by my irresponsibility. Nobody owes anyone anything based on what "might" happen. That is a dangerous and stupid path of logic.

The problem is that you might be a safe driver, but the other guy is not. You might be focused and professional, the other guy might be texting and not paying attention.

Sounds like it's their problem as their lack of control on their vehicle has caused a wreck.

If you don't properly maintain your vehicle and something breaks and you harm someone, its your fault. You could be driving 20 mph on a mountain pass and have a mechanical failure which sends you off the side and on top of a car traveling on a lower road. Assigning arbitrary numbers to stretches of road to collect money is nothing but a symptom of someone with control issues.

Now, I will say, regarding private property... If a stretch of road belongs to you, and you say nobody drives on it faster than you say, well, then I'd have to go along. The property is yours. However, this does not apply to common areas that belong to all of us, in my opinion.

I love threads like this. Everyone comes on here and says that going anything over the speed limit is completely stupid, while you know that 90% of these people break the speed limit daily. It's like the threads on P2P where people get on their high horse to tout how piracy and P2P is wrong, while they have BT running in the background.

Simply put, none of those laws are enforced. Hell, you rarely even see a polizei on the Autobahn.

They also have a law that requires you to allow a gap in traffic for those merging into the Autobahn. You know, the whole zipper effect. Doesn't happen. You have to force yourself in. For me, it's usually me cutting off the ass hat and forcing him to brake. If he hits me, so be it. Law says I have the right of way and he can pay for the damages.

This argument does not work for me dude.

How can you compare a dog bite to a 160mph speeder?

Secondly, your argument fails because dogs are required to be on a leash and you don't need to register dogs. It would be stupidity, such as speeding 160mph on a public road to leave your dog off a leash, unregistered, and with no vaccinations.

You can keep bringing up some analogies but they will not work. Attacking dogs do not kill nearly as many people or other dogs as speeders... simple fact... to even compare the two is frivolous.

Sounds like it's their problem as their lack of control on their vehicle has caused a wreck.

And you are confident that you can drive in between traffic at 160mph and have full control. Let me ask you this question before I even go further... HAVE YOU EVER even gone at those speeds or greater? Most likely you have not, because you will know what type of control I am talking about.

If you don't properly maintain your vehicle and something breaks and you harm someone, its your fault. I'm curious who this someone is? The cookie monster? Kim Jong-Ill? Seriously, you make it out to be like it's some conspiracy. I would like for you to even get close to doubling the speed on some of the roads around here. For your sake I hope you have a F1 or at least a T1 to achieve such handling and conditions.

Now, I will say, regarding private property... If a stretch of road belongs to you, and you say nobody drives on it faster than you say, well, then I'd have to go along. The property is yours. However, this does not apply to common areas that belong to all of us, in my opinion.

Actually. This is where you are correct and wrong at the same time. The road belongs to all of us, correct. As such, we have ALL voted and we feel that people like you who do not give a shit for the rest of everyone else is a danger... as such, we have voted on the speed limits and we have voted on the proper forms of government to see that such limitations are inserted.

No one said speeding a little is bad, however, some people here think that it's their given right to drive 200mph through neighborhoods with kids in the street... they simply do not give a shit.

There is a limit to excessive speed.... 160mph around cars is excessive.

Whether they speed or not, doesn't mean speeding isn't reckless and dangerous. I speed every single day in my car. Those who do it, should know exactly how dangerous it is. I don't know how anyone can actually think differently.

Heh, I agree. Though I think they have their own personal levels of what constitutes "dangerous". I see people bring up 75-80 mph, presumably in a 55-65 mph zone. Everyone knows you can die at even half that speed.

Darwinism at its best... something like this happened some time ago with some kid and his brand new Nissan 350Z, speeding in a residential area, which ended with his car in cut in half by a tree...

I don't think we were talking about 10-20 over a speed limit... were talking about 160mph in a presumed 65 zone with traffic and dark conditions.

I think a lot of the people here barking that there should be no speed limits are those with craptastic cars trying to prove something. I drive a car that can exceed 180mph in no time and I do not ever desire to prove myself or prove that my car can. I don't drive the exact posted speed but I also don't drive 100mph over. I respect the flow of the traffic and under no circumstances am I going to drive like a go cart through traffic nor cut cars off or even elevate the risk situation.

I see these people every day thinking that their 4 bannger is the next Bugatti veyron and that they have some skills unfounded even in mario andrettis skill books. I guess it comes with the age of maturity, but evidently for some the level of maturity never cease to exist.

Dip shits like this are part of the reason insurance is so damn expensive,Plus no special training for that type of high speed driving.....Also not the proper place to be doing it and not at night!!!.......Little dumbass! I'm just glad no one was killed at that speed a mop would be used for the clean up.

I don't know where you live but around here, all dogs must be registered. And the leash law is another control law. If I have trained my dog properly and it behaves correctly on a leash, nobody has a right to extract money from be because of what happened to other dogs or what "might" happen. Again, if my dog does attack, than the issue is between me and my dogs victim and I hold total responsibility.

Who said anything about weaving through traffic at 160 mph? If someone thinks they can and fails, then they need to cough up money to anyone they hurt. If someone does this and does not fail, they shouldn't owe anyone because of what "could" have happened. And yes, I have driven that fast (faster actually) because my car is capable of this, however I did not weave through traffic while doing it. That is lame.

I'm curious who this someone is? The cookie monster? Kim Jong-Ill? Seriously, you make it out to be like it's some conspiracy. Government. And if someone does have an F1 car they want to drive on your local roads at those speeds, as long as they don't hurt anyone else, whos business is it?

Actually. This is where you are correct and wrong at the same time. The road belongs to all of us, correct. There is a difference between doing 10mph over and doing over 100mph over the speed.

Oh ok. So now its ok to break the law just as long as its within your personal threshold. Got it.

Street racing is fine with me, so long as you leave city limits and go out into the middle of nowhere and do it. If your city has a location that has little to zero traffic, go do it there. Block off the roads while you're at it too. That way it's less likely you'll kill someone doing it.

Just don't get pissed off at the police when they come and start handing out tickets or putting you in jail for the night. You are doing something illegal.

That's why I loved Japan. You can go up and do touge battles. The cops will actually let you do it from about the hours of midnight to 0300. After that, they will go and break it all up. They won't actually ticket/fine anyone. If there becomes an issue with accidents, they will fix the road up so that you can't drift on them or drive fast on them. Rumble strips suck.

I see what type of person you are. I'm not going to bother responding anymore to your garbage.

You are the type of person who is a do nothing but blame me type of guy. Don't use any safety or structural or security mechanisms... if it fails and kills 20 or even 100 people, its my fault.

lets not protect others from my actions and let me be wreckless and careless, but if i screw up, lock me up... too bad for the people I just killed.

great logic you got going there

Guess what, I live in Germany and speeding is really nothing here. We have Autobahn which is safe for speeding and we build cars with safety in mind.

As long as you're on the part that does not have speed limits. Which seems to shrink every year.

All cars built and sold in Europe and the USA (and elsewhere, except maybe china) are built "with safety in mind." Nice troll. I've driven the autobahn extensively and I see deathtrap clunkers in the right lane barely keeping up with the minimal speed all the time; usually pulling some beat up caper/trailer. So please, spare me your autobahn superiority act.

At 160mph all the safety in the world won't help you if you hit a concrete bridge post or cross the median and hit another car head on. If you think otherwise I suggest you go back to school and try to pass your rudimentary physics class.

Sorry you don't like freedom and don't have enough self responsibility that you can't go through life without being policed and by some strange logic, because you can't, others must also be policed.

My car is fast, but I manage not to drive it like a moron, crash, or kill anyone. I typically drive in the slow lane because I have enough self responsibility to not put others at risk. When I'm able, I put the pedal down.

I see these people every day thinking that their 4 bannger is the next Bugatti veyron and that they have some skills unfounded even in mario andrettis skill books. I guess it comes with the age of maturity, but evidently for some the level of maturity never cease to exist.

LOL. I made the mistake of driving by a movie theater just as the last "fast and furious" movie let out. OMG. The stupid. It hurt.

I'm sitting at the light in my V8 supercharged redneck sedan, my valentine one is freaking out and some punk pulls up and starts reving his fearsome civic fartcan. The ligt turns green and he takes off and "smokes" me. I proceed at a stately, legal manner in time to see Smoky pull his ass over. :D

Moral of the story: kids are fucking stupid. I was stupid at that age.

Note to self: never let boys drive dads redneck monster. They can make do with moms civic hybrid. Bwahahahahahahaha.

I think roughly the same result will happen at the 80 mph that some around here think is somehow safer.

I'll be sending you the bill for my hyperbole meter. It just exploded.

At least here in the USA driver education is not adequate to allow for free and open driving that you advocate.

Additionally our roads are frequently not safe for very high speed driving.

If these two issues were addressed I would agree with your point. But they have not been.

they probably thought it was really cool to post a video of it on youtube...and it came back and bit them on the @rse

It really depends on where it's done. I've done 145-150 before, but it was on a long flat river bottom road with nothing but recently harvested fields all around for miles. I could literally see in any direction for miles and there were no other cars in sight. Doing that kind of speed on a road with traffic is just suicidal. One person pulls out in front of you and you can kiss your ass and theirs goodbye. Oh and then posting it on youtube should earn you a tattoo or something on your forehead that labels you too stupid to breed.

Hahahaha, wow. You actually dared to pull that one.

I tell you what. If you ever managed to get to my town (if your extreme racing skills dont get you killed)... give me a buzz. I'll be more than happy to take you down to the track and school you like you have not seen.

You seem like you are one of those arrogant cocky people you always see end up in a pole because they thought that their fartcan can pull great performance and handling.

My freedom is there for me to enjoy, not for idiot drivers like you to take it away from me by ending my life.

What I don't get is people sitll continue to do that even while the threaters are stocked with cops. The cops usually stalk the theaters whenever race movies are out. It's great to get out early and then watch the fartcans squeal out only to get pulled.

lmfao. wow. keep going. If you hit a bridge at 80 that you couldn't miss at 160 I feel for you. Hell if you hit a bridge at 80 at all I feel for you. I guess this must be your drivin style.... if you can't make it at 160, then no one can make it at 80.... great logic again.

Well, 80 is safer that 160. I think the energy involved follows the inverse square rule, so 80 is way less energy than 160, but in a head on or offset collision it'd still be pretty bad, depending on the circumstances.

Additionally modern cars are way safer than those of just a decade ago:

I try not to make broad statements like "speeding is bad." I don't think it is. What I think is bad is that here in the USA our standards for driver education are very low. If you are not blind (generally speaking) can have a pulse you can get a license. The exams are a joke.

So many Americans see driving as a right (it is not, it is a privilege, IMHO) that any attempt to ratchet up the training requirements always faces tons of backlash. The elderly (just as dangerous statistically speaking as punk teenagers) have a powerful lobby. So as long as the cataract ridden WW2 veterans want to drive their Crown Vics and town cars we're screwed.

And any parent that hands their teenage kid the keys to an S4 is a fucking moron.

Then you can't see the pothole on the road, since a mirage was covering it up from your eyes. I don't think it's ever safe to do 150+ or even 100 mph. It's just in certain locations, you have a lower probability of getting into an accident. In any accident, might as well kiss your ass goodbye, unless you have a titanium rollcage, racing seats, harness, and maybe a HANS device.

Anyways, I'd probably speed on that same road too. Cept my car in the states has a limiter. Can't do over 110 mph with it. My car here in Germany doesn't have a limiter, but it tops out at 210 kph (130 mph). Just a few crazy ppl in Germany go that fast or faster, including me.

A fucking retard who drives on the left lane all the time at 80 mph while thinking that he has the right to be there just because he drove within the allowed limit (80mph) poses a bigger danger than a sensible person who wants to overtake him at 100mph but he is aware of the conditions and reacts accordingly.

Driver education is as big a joke in the states as it is in Europe or Asia. It's just requires more time outside the states. Most don't get one, as it's expensive, time consuming, and a lot of times, they can't even afford a car anyways. Europe has a pretty decent public transportation system and Asia even more so. In the US, majority of us have to have cars. There simply is little to no public transportation.

Back on topic,

QFT. This accident has "Parenting fail" written all over it...

I have nothing against youth racing and stuff, as long as they're doing it in the proper environment (dragstrip, road course, etc) and as long as they know what they're doing, I'm all for cheap thrills and whatnot.

Dunno, for some reason I always thought street racing was stupid, since I can remember...

I don't know if anyone is denying that driver awareness doesn't play a part, but if we take that out, then the higher speed is more dangerous.

The government of whatever nation isn't going to check the awareness of every single driver, ever single minute they are driving. It's simply easier to enforce a minimum/maximum speed limit.

Cause you never know when the driver doing 100 mph ends up not bothering to be aware of the conditions and react accordingly.

For me, US street racing is stupid. 15 seconds or less to race 1/4 mile. Not sure what skill you need to do that crap. Shift fast and drive in a straight line. Wow! Amazing!

I use to race, but it was timed races, as the roads didn't allow for the passing of other cars. Also our speeds tend to be below 80 mph and no one else is ever out driving the roads. Be it daytime or night time. We just did it at night though, since we can see lights off the other cars and pause for them to leave.

I'm into rally racing. It's more about driver skill than a fast car.

Dunno where you live but come to DC area and if you see anybody driving the speed limit I'll buy you lunch. You can be doing 75 in a 55 and people will STILL be leaving you in the dust.

...and a few feet from your rear bumper too. DC area driving is quite dangerous at times, and far too many impatient people get into rear ends all the time. But nothing tops driving in New York. You drive for survival at all costs!

Again with the "allowing"... Guess what, I never took any driver education classes. I took the test, paid the government bribe and off I go.

Additionally our roads are frequently not safe for very high speed driving.

I agree with you 100%. So if someone chooses to drive at a high rate of speed on those roads they are responsible for whatever the outcome is.

But the wow effect would be less :p

I dunno, a torn up car with a dead guy splattered about a smaller area is still a torn up car with a dead guy. You hit a concrete pole at 80 or 160 I'd think the outcome was the same save for the distance of flying parts and guts. Driver is still dead.
