Slap your face if you want to but the fact proves that you can go fast, you can fly high and you still can be safe at the same time as long as you have safety in mind.

I'm over 30. And its not just speeding, I don't take kindly to anyone telling me I'm "not allowed" to do something. I will do it just to spite you and prove you wrong.

your not allowed to walk into your local PD waving a gun around.....

enjoy your prison term....

Suprisingly the safest form of transportation in the world functions at a speed of around 800 km/h every day. I wonder how aeroplanes can be so fast and yet so safe?

here is a hint....they don't fly 3 feet from each other.
and most trees and telephone poles are not 30,000 feet high.

Not to mention the pilots have at least one other person there who can take control of the vehicle if something happens to the pilot that prevents him or her from operating safely, and they go through more extensive training than the most stringent car license training.

And, even at those speeds a slight "bump in the road" isn't as big a problem since they have a whole lot of time to regain any control that might have been lost.

Just because all pilots need to take an intensive training doesn't mean that a car driver can't be well trained too.

Sorry, but your ass should not be allowed to go over about 85 mph on any highway, period, no matter how good of a driver you are. It can freak out other drivers on the road who may be much, much less experienced than you. There is too much that becomes out of your control on once you go over 80.

Even when there is no one else around?

do planes have intersections to stop, go and turn at? do they fly in lanes, merge between other planes? have to watch for kids darting out from the sidewalk? that's a complete apples to oranges comparison there.

Even when there is no one else around?

people have sped on an empty road, lost control of their vehicle and ended up dead inside their vehicle that's now lying upside down in a ditch. while if you know how to handle your vehicle, nothing may happen to you, but if you're going way over the speed limit, you're still increasing the risk of losing control of your car.

Using the same logic, I guess that people shouldn't fly either.

My point wasn't that some drivers can't be well trained...but was more that if not all the vast majority of pilots are...by default. The same isn't true of drivers, so even if you are totally rad at driving...and have 1337 skillz that doesn't mean you will be fine, because the person next to you may not. It really is hard to make a comparison between cars and planes because they operate so differently. Cars generally operate in 2 dimensions; cars generally operate in much closer proximity to one another; cars don't have people that are monitoring their positions (all of them...every car on the road) to alert them there could be trouble up ahead; cars don't have co-pilots who are able to take control of the vehicle if something happens to the driver; cars (besides race cars, and even then the crew is much smaller) don't have huge crews that carefully check and maintain every single part of the vehicle before it ever embarks on a journey. It's not even fair to compare a personal car to a small one person plane (which doesn't fly anywhere near as fast as a jet) because the plane is still operating under entirely different rules.

I really. truly don't understand how you can say "if you are driving with safety in mind it is safe to drive fast". It isn't safe to drive period; driving too fast only makes it worse.

That is not what I said:
Why do some people think that speed kills? There is nothing wrong with speeding if safety is kept in mind.

Safety kept in mind: conditions are good, car is regularly maintain, familiarity with the route, road is clear and etc.

what point is that proving? planes have had accidents too, but you can't compare flying to a busy highway.

again, i don't understand. give your average person the freedom to go as fast as they want on an empty road and you'll be having more cars loosing control and rolling off the highway. how does this relate to flying?

So how do you enforce that? Whether you like it or not it is safer to drive more slowly so for safety sake speed limits are posted. You drive faster than the posted speed you are breaking the law. Now you want to create shades of grey..."it's OK for me to speed because I do it with safety kept in mind and I change my oil every 300 miles to be on the safe side..plus I know where I am going". So I am a cop tasked with keeping the roads as safe as possible for everyone and I see you blow past me at 50 mph over the speed limit. I pull you over and you say "well I am allowed to speed because I can handle it". That is absurd. So regardless of how well you think you can handle it, it isn't allowed because most people can't.

And seriously...you are going to split hairs about the exact wording? How is the intent of "driving with safety in mind" so different from "safety kept in mind?" That is just being pedantic.

so what's the argument now? all i'm trying to say is that driving faster increases the risk of an accident occuring.

So does blocking people by staying on the fast lane even when the slower lane is empty.

well i think we can all agree that those driving slower should be in the right lane.
again, what's the argument? is it ok to speed?

So perhaps you can define your terms? Under what conditions can one drive safely while speeding with safety kept in mind? When the road is empty, or at the very least empty as far as you can see? I'd hope that would mean going in both directions. Driving when your car is well maintained? Because we all know that a well maintained car never has any problems. Though none of that tells me if someone else is going to have blown a tire on the road earlier today and so there are scraps all over the road. Unless you go and drive the route slowly once to make sure there aren't any obstructions on the road I don't care how familiar you are with the route; a road is not static.

Who said anything about going as fast as you want?

If you can justify breaking the law to allow you to speed what else can you justify breaking the law to allow you to do? Steal, kill people...I mean you start doing that and where does it end? Speed limits have been established because it is a fact that an accident at a higher speed is more likely to result in a fatality than an accident at a slower speed.

It is ok to speed if you keep safety in mind. Use your head to think about safety, not just following what people tell you to do. If you are a regular track racer, driving a Supercar with ceramic disc brakes, complete with 5 point safety harness on an empty road, why should you drive as fast as allowed like an average Joe in a Ford Fiesta?

Make one copy a DVD?

I might have missed something, but as I understood it, there was no judgement (at least not yet) in that case. So the MPAA has argued that it is against the law but the law hasn't actually been set. Probably not the best analogy ;) I don't want to falsely create a slippery slope. I don't think that speeding is going to lead to murder or stealing. I just think that once you start justifying illegal actions it gets easier to justify them in the future.

Kristofff, hats off to you, your posts are well written and entertaining. On line in particular I liked so much it is now my signature quote. Thanks.

You really like to troll don't you?

I'm not going to argue your point here, you can argue schematics all day long. He was a founding father of this nation and a president... now if you want to argue what a president is and when a president title counts, that is your own damn problem.... not mine.

This thread should be looked. If you guys are looking to soapbox, pay the 5 bucks and go to genmay.

Haha you thought Franklin was a U.S. President hahahahaha... also, you meant semantics hahahaha....
