Stupid, crazy, inexperienced idiots. They are SO lucky to be alive.

NO ONE expects to have a car come up on them @ TWICE the speed limit so even someone checking their mirrors/blind spot could easily pull out in front of them to pass another car. It's relative speed that makes speeding so dangerous, well, when you are going "normal" speeds (80 and under...over that obviously there are other issues). That's why there is a minimum speed on highways, too.

Did anyone even read the article? I wasn't backing up the fact that the kids was speeding but I just don't agree with the way the article is written. The article is written in a way which suggests that speeding is something wrong. I don't know whether this is true or not but I think that the driving test should be done like in Finland:

interesting, some actually think it’s ok to even argue about this, speeding was my middle name, my parents never allowed me to use their car, crushed the first three cars I bought, learned the lesson the hard way, now I rarely go over 60mph, still… I can’t help not sharing this

Why do some people think that speed kills? There is nothing wrong with speeding if safety is kept in mind.

So you think doing 160mph while all other cars are doing 60-70mph is safe? The only place anyone can safely do 160mph is on a race track. Speed limits are placed for a reason. Placing your own life in jeopardy is one thing - doing so for others on public roads is another.

I suspect anyone pissing and moaning about not being allowed to drive as fast as they want either: (a.) are under the age of 30, or (b.) have no kids.

Ok guys, ive got just the solution for you guys. Lets limit all cars to 80. Problem solved, right? Surely! why has this not been done? I dunno about you guys but I've never been over 80. It is just so unsafe.

Go ahead... we will just remove the limiters like we already do. Those kinds of rules or laws never work.

So if somebody else found the video and posted it, then they wouldn't have got the fine? I see videos of high speed runs on the internet all over the place. I go over 160mph on my streetbike at least once a month. It's mine though, and I make sure there are no cars anywhere near me (1+ miles) on a separated 3 lane highway.

Last year some kid did 160mph on his bike and recorded it, he was locked up. It was all over the news. You also have to realize that law enforcement don't sift through you tube every day.

I will be glad to report you when you post your next 160+ mph video to your local law enforcement... then we can see what happens.

Them passing a car at those speeds in the adjacent lane was really stupid. The kids in the video don't sound very bright either. Sometimes stupidity is the best method of natural selection. Sometimes they learn the hard way though. Hopefully the experience taught them a life-long lesson. Too bad most kids are unable to experience this kind of stuff in a safe environment. The only affordable way to do it is on public streets. It's sad to think that one day at the track costs more than that $1000 fine. heh

One day at the track cost more than that fine? Where do you go?!

I feel sorry for parents who value their physical objects over kids' lives. I feel they should be put to sleep themselves.

I see the stab at me for this comment. I never said anything physical should be put ahead of lives. Stupid for even thinking that, stupid for even commenting on that.

+1. Speed limits are basically speeds that enforcement believes most people (and 18 wheelers) can handle. Going over a speed limit doesn't necessarily make it dangerous. Hitting anything just right over walking speed could technically kill you anyway (like a gutter nail through the eyeball).

Not true. Semi tractor trailers (18 wheelers) are limited to even a much lower state speed.

You would know how long it takes to do corrective action during rush hour or even light congestion at 160mph. Having people travel these speeds in traffic will kill a ton of people. The problem is that not everyone looks for an open road and pays attention like you... lets face it, half the damn population is texting and driving... the last thing any of us want is for them to do 100+ during rush hours.

No, it's all of the people who don't pay attention when driving and the fucktards on their cell phones. All of the avoidable crashes vastly outnumber the high speed accidents.

Nearly all crashes are avoidable. Most happen due to conditions of the driver not yielding to slow down (rain, flat tire, not paying attention, etc). So yeah. The problem is that the fucktards you speak of are the ones who kills the better drivers or the innocent drivers.

I agree with you, but if there are no other cars around and no blind corners, then what's the harm in 160mph? If I throw myself off the highway and only injure or kill myself, then what does that matter to anybody else? My body, my possessions, none of your business. I don't need anybody else worrying about what I do to myself. :p (not trying to start an argument, but just upset how people believe they have the right to force somebody else to be "safe" to themselves)

I agree with you here. But I see people off the road on perfectly dry and sunny days on 45mph roads.

Our highway system was designed for 120+ MPH continuous travel in mind. If people got over to the right when not passing, signal when they change lanes, actually used their rearview mirrors for something besides looking at themselves, and looked into their blind spots before changing lanes it wouldn't be an issue. But instead of enforcing those rules they institute restrictive speed limits solely to give the people not paying attention more time to react.

Our highway system was not designed for 120+mph. Come drive up the I75 here in Michigan at 120+ mph and let me know if you can walk from that... if you are good enough to miss the tire sized potholes and the bumps.... you might be good enough to avoid the short 90 degree bends which are warned at 35mph.

I'm over 30. And its not just speeding, I don't take kindly to anyone telling me I'm "not allowed" to do something. I will do it just to spite you and prove you wrong.

You are NOT allowed to jump of a 100+ story building.

...common, you know you want to defy me :p

It's not that speed kills, but rather the unintended consequences of the physics of the laws of motion that want to see you stop in any way possible.

Ok, most people seem to be giving him crap because he's defending going fast and he's from Germany where it's legal in some places to do so.

Do you know why they can do that there? The inspection program for cars (TUV) is *way* more strict than the inspection programs in the US (just look at what's on the road in rural areas.) That covers safety of the car.

To get a license in Germany, if I remember correctly, it's over $1000 USD and two years in school. That *might* lead to a better skill of driver than we have in the US (but nowhere near the skill of Norwegians.) If you're 16 years old you can take a written and a short driving test and get a license.

I'm not defending the video, even though I've done the same exact thing.

I grew up driving on the highways in South Florida where the speed limit is 60 in some places and as someone said earlier, you'd be dead if you actually drove the speed limit as everyone is doing at least 75.

I've never been on the autobahn but have known quite a few people who have and the difference that they tell me is in the rules of the road so to speak. For example, one my buddies came back and said that you could drive as fast as you want in some sections of the autobahn because people only pass on the left side lane and then immediately move back to the right to cruise. You couldn't ever do that here in the states because you have inconsiderate people who throw their car into cruise control and sit in the left lane without any consideration for faster traffic who would like to pass.

I once saw on the History Channel's Modern Marvels a piece on the autobahn and German driving behavior and they said that cars built over there for Germans don't even have cupholders or much of a radio as they believe a car is meant to be driven and nothing else! Here in the states we have dumbasses like those kids who look at as a form of pleasure and damn near kill themselves and others on the road.

Its all in the driving mentality

It definitely doesn't seem like they're going 160 in that video (Not that I know what 160 looks like, but I have been 120 quite a few times in my car and it looks faster than that), but I guess it's just the crappy camera work.

Also, it sounds like they crashed because that Audi couldn't keep it's tires glued around a curve.

yea it sounds like the REAL problem is in the designs of that Audi and not the fault of the drivers ! Also what brand of tires were on the car? i think this calls for a lawsuit on the tire and car manufacturers !!;)

You're also not allowed to go to the White House and fling poo at Obama.

**waits for the video on Youtube. :D

That is a real mature attitude.

I heard Finland's are the best not Norwegians

My sister is learning to drive. If she ever went 10 over, I would kill her. I make sure to enforce the speed limit wherever she drives.

Now imagine she was doing some nighttime driving. Some idiot is driving 100+ on the highway while my sister is going 65. Whose fault would it be if she was merging to another lane (with her turn signal on) and that moron smashes into her. I couldn't even imagine if something like that happened.

Well if she didn't look out before merging in, I would blame her because turning on the turn signal doesn't automatically give you the right to merge in, you still need to make sure that there is a space for you.

True, but what if she had looked behind her and didn't see anyone. But as she is merging the guy going 100+ hits her from behind.

Story reminds me of the time that some kid was driving his brand new "very expensive, high performance" car that daddy just bought him for his 18th birthday. First time out he did 120 on the freeway, lost control and rolled it, taking out power poles and killing him in the process. I was more upset that the little shit took out the power to my house for an entire day than him losing his life.

Exactly! :D I smell a lawsuit.

Guess what, I live in Germany and speeding is really nothing here. We have Autobahn which is safe for speeding and we build cars with safety in mind.

The fact that none of them were injured pretty much means this guy is right

My bosses kid did that... parked his new Porsche inside a neighbors living room after losing control and taking out a phone poll and having it fly up through their fence and into their house. Of course the kid ran away and tried to blame it on someone stealing the car.... except it still had the keys in it... that his dad gave him. :)

Same deal when I was in school. Kid got a brand new car, wrecked it a week later while drinking and speeding.... the following week, a brand new replacement car.

This guy is right, any sane person with 20/20 vision would have been able to see a car moving at 160mph just in time to know when not to merge, at night.

Its almost as if you people weren't born with night vision goggles.

Read his question, he said 100+ and his sister is doing 65.

Totally agree but the article makes it like speeding is something wrong.

News flash... IT IS WRONG. Now what is defined as "speeding" it's going faster than the posted speed limits, not some arbitrary "if you go faster than this anywhere in the universe you're speeding". You mention the Autobahn, well other nearby countries most definitely have speed limits in certain areas.

I can imagine. I don't have a sister, but if that happened to me I'm pretty sure it would end up with me on trail for beating a guy to death, that is if he lived through the accdient.

No, not again more of these who like to get busted by recording themselves doing something illegal and uploading it to youtube. This has become popular lately.

Its only "wrong" because some control freak said it is. If you are driving 350 mph, even though the sign says 25 mph, and you don't ruin anybodies property or kill anyone, there is nothing "wrong" about it. And spare me the "well, something COULD happen..." argument. A meteor COULD hit the earth and this whole argument would be moot. Monkeys COULD fly out of your butt.

Speed limits are simply money makers for government. If I go "too fast" near you or someone else, why must I pay a third party who is not involved at all? How does that make any sense?

Dunno where you live but come to DC area and if you see anybody driving the speed limit I'll buy you lunch. You can be doing 75 in a 55 and people will STILL be leaving you in the dust.

QFT - Chicago is the same!
