Identifying Which NVIDIA GPUs Are Defective

Engadget has posted links to lists of defective NVIDIA GPUs that are currently in Dell and HP machines.

So now that HP's joined Dell in releasing information on which laptops have those defective NVIDIA GPUs, we can sort of piece together which chips are faulty -- and just as had been rumored, it looks like basically every Geforce 8600M and 8400M chip is affected.

Hmm, GeForce Go 7000 series as well?

Perhaps thats the reason why the original video card in my Inspiron 9400 went bad last year. It's a GeForce 7900GS

I hope Dell eventually offers an extended warranty like HP. The bios update will only postpone the problem. It's sad to think that my laptop will suffer an untimely death...

However I feel it's Nvidia's responsibility as well to offer Dell and HP assistance in making things right for the end user.

Thanks, Just got off the phone with hp. They are sending me a postage paid box to ship the laptop to them. They say it will be back in 7-9 business days. they will be replacing the entire mobo.

so as far as I can tell the lenovo machines are not impacted by this problem. . .has anyone heard any news AT ALL about this?

Thanks!

Holy crap! Now that the information is out, I suspect that Nvidia may have to revise their previous estimate of $150-200M upwards cause they sold a lot of these chips. I also smell a class action lawsuit (every ambulance chasing lawyer on the planet is going to want in on this one cause it is money in the bank) and I don't see a judge denying them this class status since this literally affects millions worldwide.

I will call Dell later today and let you all know what action they take.

If this effects all 8600m Mobile Graphics chips, I wonder if Velocity Micro is doing anything about it? My Velocity Micro laptop has an 8600M in it. I will call them and post back here with what they say.

Does this only affect HP/Dell? Somehow I wouldn't think so...I have a Asus G1S-A1 with the 8600M...guess I could give them a ring.

If they replace the motherboard/video, what are they replacing it with?

Does anyone know what this BIOS update does? Does it help? my laptop still works, but gets very toasty. I'm going on a weeklong trip tomorrow, and don't know if I should run the update prior to leaving. (I have a Dell XPS1530)

Thx

http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20080801VL203.html And now nvidia wants out of chipset business?

Time to sell your nvidia shares folks.

And I finally got an answer from Acer. My other halfs lappy is going back to them for "inspection"

Symptoms. It gets hot. dumps the wireless. Let it cool and u can get it back on wireless. no changes to settings or anything. If u keep playing. then it bluescreens the gfx driver. (or lately it just hard crashes.)

Great to hear it was nVidia's fault behind my 7900GS in my old E1705 breaking down conveniently after the warranty went out.

I have an inspiron 1520 with a NVIDIA 8400, i've had some driver related crashes but nothing ever major, it plays games very well. Should i look into sending it back before all hell breaks loose?

Mail your manufactuer and point out its known fault. Dell and HP are replaceing them. OEM's /should/ as its a fault.

From what I have been reading, the problems could go all the way back to the 7000 and 6000 series of GPU's as well.

They are also having problems w/their 790i m/b chipsets too, which are being pulled from the shelves.

I have to wonder if it's dependent on the type of card... I have a 7700 and it hasn't glitched on me once. It's never broken 75c even after several hours of gaming. (YAY! PORTAL!) With all the talk of replacing motherboards, I wonder if there's any consistency of the type of chip mount used for the most problem prone models. Mine is installed via an MXM card.

I dont buy prebuilt systems, so I dont have to worry about system recalls? Figured that kinda explained itself.

Well since these are LAPTOPs it's kinda hard to "build it yourself." Try reading the article first before posting.

My Inspiron 1420 has an 8400M. Unfortunately for me my warranty is already up and the BIOS band-aid will not help squat if my GPU dies. Dell hasn't said what they'll do with customers outside of warranty who are affected by this faulty hardware. nVidia isn't exactly helping out either...

And what if you build a system yourself, and a part inside has a known fault? You still have to replace it. And in the case of smaller quantity parts, you may never know it it had a known fault, so you just may be SOL, and have to pay for it yourself.

My 3 years old HP DV8000t isnt on the list, but has a 7400GO should I worry?

so far my vostro 1400 is OK but when I built my new dell I purposely skipped on the Nvidia add on graphics, Point is Nvidia is once again screwing us over...........

I have a hp DV6885SE laptop which has a 8400m GS GPU in there. I also have noticed that its heck lot louder these days.... Wonder If I should be worried. That and it not in the list in the HP website but does have the afflicted GPU.......

I wonder if this affects xps1710's with 7950GTX's?

Unfortunately, mine is out of warranty, even though i'll give dell a ring however i highly doubt i'll be able to get a hold of someone in tech support who has some decent knowledge about this.

The thing is that some of the chips have been out there and in use for a while now, so although they may be inherently failure prone, the absence of reports of actual mass failures leads me to believe that the situation isn't as dire as some would have us believe.

When this, at the time, failed to work for me, I parted and sold the laptop. :p

Point out that its known defect and (certainly over here in UK) we have a 6yr statute to chase ppl for "Good not fit for purpose" reasons. I got my money back for my nforce1 board that had defective caps.

Only by holding manufacturers responsible can we stop them trampling on us.

I have an E1705 -- 7900GS randomly cratered a few months ago out of warranty, was like a month out. I had been calling them for 6 months about issues with it, and they said it was fine. Got it fixed "under warranty" after all was said and done due to records of the problem existing prior to the warranty expiring.

UPDATE:: I got the postage paid box from hp yesterday afternoon, and sent my laptop back. The package was received at 8:40 am this morning. Hopefully I won't have to wait much longer!!

Definitely let us know if they just replaced the mobo but you still have the same defective junk. If you got a nice replacement or upgrade I may be able use that info to help push Dell to "fix" my 1420 which has that defective piece of crap GPU.

Good Luck!

Thanks, man. Unfortunately, I won't really know if they really did anything to it at all. They said that they would replace the entire motherboard, but with as many computer systems I build, take apart, and fix, I have never had much balls to take apart my laptop. lol. I guess if I have an upgraded anything, I'll know. It would be cool if they threw in some sort of upgrade. I mean, Nvidia is footing the bill for all of the repairs and all, right? Why not take advantage of it, HP?

My vostro has been getting really hot lately in high performance mode, but no video problems.

I had not had much problems with mine and all, other than the video drivers crashing occasionally, occasional hangups in BIOS, and the battery not charging well if at all, and running hot, I figured that if anything the extra heat is shortning the life of the laptop, and its free overnight shipping both ways, why not?

Actually everything I've read shows NV trying to keep this quiet and some vendors "band-aiding" the problem in order to try to sustain a longer lifetime for the chip past warranty. NV has never publicly stated how many bad GPUs there really are.

Dell hasn't made any effort to contact me about my Inspiron 1420 and warn me that my 8400M is a defective piece of crap. Sure they have a blog started about it here: http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/25/nvidia-gpu-update-for-dell-laptop-owners.aspx

But I only found the URL that due to others on forums like the [H]. Instead Dell has done NOTHING but offer a BIOS update that makes the fan turn on more often in order to try to keep the GPU cooler. That doesn't mean it won't fail. Just means they may be able to keep the GPU running until after warranty. Sure people like me will scream and yell and piss and moan about the defect until they fold but what about those people who don't know what is going on? They get screwed because only those who know about the defect have bothered going back to Dell and asking questions.

The same Inspiron 1420 laptop is STILL being sold with the 8400M (along with all the other laptops with the defect) without any proof that it isn't still the defective piece of crap. NV sure isn't talking about it other then the "$200 million we will spend on repairs/replacements."

Granted this isn't Dell's fault but they're still liable so they should either extend my warranty (which is already expired) or replace the defective part with a non-defective part of equal or better performance. HP already extended the warranty on their laptops for that defective piece of crap from NV to a few extra years free of charge.

Needless to say NV has burned me multiple times in the past and they just burnt me again. I'll never buy their hardware again if they don't make this right and Dell's current response will make me go to another vendor in the future as well when it comes time to get a new laptop.

ANOTHER
UPDATE:
So, got an e-mail from HP this morning saying ... "Your file has been brought to the attention of the Hewlett-Packard Customer Relations Management Department and we would like to speak with you as soon as possible to discuss a solution to your Service Order issue."

So, I called them back. They did replace the motherboard as they said they would, however the battery was dead, and that there was paint 'spilled' on the bezel around the lcd and the keyboard.

They want to charge me $746.86 fix it.
When I purchased the laptop, about 2 years ago, I paid $699 for it, and there was a $250 rebate. WTF? I could buy a new laptop for that much. Not to mention that the laptop was still functioning before I sent it off. ( I know that the battery was not working, but I thought that it might of been possibly related to an issue with the nVidia recall and prior to this fiasco, I was shopping around to find a replacement.

Furthermore, there was no "paint spilled" anywhere before I sent it off. I am aware that there was a few cosmetic scratches on the bezel, but paint? spilled?

After clarifying with the HP rep that the spilled paint was purely cosmetic, and not effecting the functionality, I asked "well, how much to just replace the battery?" His responce was, "We don't do that."

So, I told them just to send the laptop back to me with out the extra "repairs", and that I'd replace the battery on my own terms. And that is what they are doing.

I'm really nervous about the whole "paint spilled" thing. I know that there was nothing but a few scratches. when someone says "spilled" that implies quite a bit. it's not a spatter, bit, or drop; but a spill! I picture somone dumping a can of paint on it.

I really wished I had taken pictures of it right before I sent it off, but I really didn't expect this much crap from HP. Hopefully, I will get the laptop back just as I sent it off, (with the new mobo of course). I will raise hell with HP, if I get it back in any less condition.

I will update as soon as I get it back with pictures of the "spill".

I wanted to get a laptop with a 8600M, but after reading this I don't know if I should risk it.

It appears I am unfortunately one of the "lucky" ones with an m1330. When I send my laptop out it will be fully accompanied by pictures of the overheating.
