Identifying Which NVIDIA GPUs Are Defective

ANOTHER
UPDATE:
So, got an e-mail from HP this morning saying ... "Your file has been brought to the attention of the Hewlett-Packard Customer Relations Management Department and we would like to speak with you as soon as possible to discuss a solution to your Service Order issue."

So, I called them back. They did replace the motherboard as they said they would, however the battery was dead, and that there was paint 'spilled' on the bezel around the lcd and the keyboard.

They want to charge me $746.86 fix it.
When I purchased the laptop, about 2 years ago, I paid $699 for it, and there was a $250 rebate. WTF? I could buy a new laptop for that much. Not to mention that the laptop was still functioning before I sent it off. ( I know that the battery was not working, but I thought that it might of been possibly related to an issue with the nVidia recall and prior to this fiasco, I was shopping around to find a replacement.

Furthermore, there was no "paint spilled" anywhere before I sent it off. I am aware that there was a few cosmetic scratches on the bezel, but paint? spilled?

After clarifying with the HP rep that the spilled paint was purely cosmetic, and not effecting the functionality, I asked "well, how much to just replace the battery?" His responce was, "We don't do that."

So, I told them just to send the laptop back to me with out the extra "repairs", and that I'd replace the battery on my own terms. And that is what they are doing.

I'm really nervous about the whole "paint spilled" thing. I know that there was nothing but a few scratches. when someone says "spilled" that implies quite a bit. it's not a spatter, bit, or drop; but a spill! I picture somone dumping a can of paint on it.

I really wished I had taken pictures of it right before I sent it off, but I really didn't expect this much crap from HP. Hopefully, I will get the laptop back just as I sent it off, (with the new mobo of course). I will raise hell with HP, if I get it back in any less condition.

I will update as soon as I get it back with pictures of the "spill".

Wow that SUCKS! But how else will HP, Dell and other's recoup the cost of the all the defective GPU's since NV isn't owning up to squat? Wait...that's right. They'll stick it to the little guy.

Other than having a poor battery life and inability to play any modern games, I haven't really had any problems with my HP TX2000Z(go6150). It does get pretty hot when in high performance, but I doubt it has anything to do with the integrated graphics.

My wife has a DV2700t (i think its the t, the intel one) with the 8400m, and as far as I know, there hasn't been any issues with that either.

Anyone have any issues with these two models?

Seems clear to me like they were trying to rip you off. Hard to believe a reputable company like HP would attempt to do that so outspokenly. But I suppose anything is possible in this world

A co-worker of mine just got off the phone with Apple after pestering them for the last week. He has a MacBook Pro that uses a 8600M.

It appears Apple had no clue about this issue (or so they claimed). From what he was told today because of his phone call according to Apple they immediately did research and got in contact with nVidia. They have now confirmed to my co-worker that they do have the defective GPUs.

Due to that in the last round of patches Apple quietly did a blanket patch for all MacBook Pro users for a band-aid fix like the Dell BIOS update to regulate fan speed. He's going to check tonight to see if he really has the patch or not and whether it actually lowers his temperatures. There should also be an update to the Apple support site regarding the 8x00 mobile GPUs.
