Enemy Territory Quake Wars Beta

i was a medic in the last game, and damn was there a difference in how i played. Near the end we were all in the Sewer control place and the hacker dude got taken out, but no worries i popped out my defibrillator's and we were good to go. i just cant wait to experience the real teamplaying moments, with Vent and total communication. SO much potential here.

I wish the Strogg were allowed to take positions back. Once the GDF has the EMF thing, you can't destroy it. You should be able to hack it back and drive them back into their base.

just cannot support games that use this kind of advertising, we simply cannot encourage it.

you might as well get over this now, because it's really the way games (along with everything else) is headed.

Maybe - thanks to people like you who sit back and just accept it. I certainly wont, and neither will a lot of other people, so the first thing they're going to do with ad revenue instead of giving you "extra content" is pay off the loss they expect to lose by people making a stand against it, which they will no doubt have taken into account with their sales figures.

Enjoy your ads

After putting in about 6 hours into the beta I've had enough. I'll just wait for the final demo before I pass final judgement. I can't get over the funky jerkiness of aiming and player movement. It just sucks all the fun out of it. Maybe this beta is too beta for me. LOL

The plan to put in-game ads into the retail version chaps me hide, too. Meh.

Save yer monies and buy UT3 when it comes out, or get into TF2 (hope that doesn't end up with ads) or save aside for when Crysis comes out.

All top notch games that have gone through significantly more R&D than ETQW and none of which have advertising (that we know of)

The idea that games need to generate additional revenue from ads is a complete lie, what developers/publishers need to do is stop making utter crap thats full of bugs and lacks decent content, studios doing that are going to go bust no matter what.

I've been playing the beta since it came out and find it to be a fun game. True it is more gun and run than the slow paced strategy of Americas Army, but it can can be fun and intense. I played ET, but never could figure it out. The improved interface for Quake Wars is a definate improvement for me.
I think the graphics are very good, but it may be toned downed for the beta. I'm afraid to think what it will be like in the retail version with my current setup. As for vehicles, I've driven the GDF vehicles more than the Strogg vehicles. I've always sucked at vehicles. Could never play 1942, because I sucked at it. In the beginning, I was having problems like everyone in QW, but now I'm pretty decent with them since I change the perspective whenever I drive. I don't drive in cockpit view, but rather third person so I can see the orientation of the vehicle. Its a little harder to shoot so you have to quickly change.
I'm surprised no else has mentioned the unlock weapons or abilities you get with XP. Just curious some of the unlocks others have gained ingame. The two that stick out for me were vehicle drop, but never got to use, damn server, and grenade launcher for my GDF rifle.

And, overall I think the sides are decently matched. I like the Strogg layout better myself, I think the GDF have it tough on ammo in comparison to Strogg. And, I don't particularly like the map. Although I'd be interested in seeing it reversed, GDF defending and Strogg attacking. Just to see how it plays then.

I couldn't agree more about the ammo issue. I was able to kill 1, maybe 2 people tops with the GDF medic because he only comes with 80 shots. Meanwhile, the Strogg Lacerator always comes with 160 shots plus the stroyant packs replenish your ammo as well. I was constantly running around with my pistol when I was on the GDF while I haven't even tried the lightning pistol (which, BTW, seems better than the 10 shot GDF counterpart) in real combat.

When I was an active BF2 player. I despised playing medic (res monkey) in ET:QW it doesn't feel like a chore when I decide to take on the medic class. There is actually more to do then just revive. Besides this is ID Software, same company that releases the source code for their games (engine) once they start developing a new one. Where is the gratitude?

who says i was putting words into your mouth? read what you said.

BF = huge maps using primarily vehicles to get around as well as mostly vehicular combat. each side seems to be equal in terms of offense and defense, i.e. "symetrical" maps. takes time to get to where the action is.

RTCW/ET series = smaller maps with use of vehicles optional or not allowed, more focused on run and gun battles and completing objectives to finish the mission. one side is defense, other is offense, not equal parts as in most BF maps. maps can be completely unbalanced and require you to mass rush the first objective (i.e. in ET, the map Battery).

as i said before...if you're looking for a game like BF, this isn't it. its not something you take your time to play like BF is. its based off quake so battles are going to be run and gun. but at the same time, you can't just do that the whole 20 mins. you have to complete objectives to win the map.

but whatever...one more player slot in a full server for me if you decide not to play :p

Please try reading what i've written, son. Cheers. Also, if you choose to reply to this, please consider writing coherently.

you would think calling someone 'grandson' would be even more of a satisfying insult than 'son', but it really isn't.

To be honest I don't see a problem with the netcode or hit detection. Some people complain of "lag" but the only lag I've gotten is visual. All of a sudden my FPS will drop for a little bit. And the weapons are find but the accuracy needs to be adjusted a bit.

The lag is hideously bad. It's like playing at 10fps, only your running at 40fps and can't do anything about it.

Seriously, you see a guy shoot at him and then try to aim where you think he will be the next time is position updates. It's horrible.

If they manage to fix this net code it will be a miracle.

I can still manage to play but I've seen it mentioned on the beta forum that it's using an older version of hit detection, with known bugs, that's been fixed since.

Also the game has extra code for bug testing that will be removed from the retail, so the netcode in the beta doesn't feel as tight as it will in final release.

found another bug. this has happened to me twice. i'll switch to a soldier with rocket launcher and well...i'll let the pic speak for itself. just in case you don't know where to look, its in the lower right corner...anyone else get this bug yet?

shot00005la6.jpg

and this was AFTER i died and got my rocket launcher finally. just after i blew up a cyclops that some guy kept getting out of and repairing. :p pain in the ass to take it down

And yet you're still trying to write to me. I'm not asking for impeccable grammar and whatnot, just some sort of structure. It's like reading you put down your thoughts as they occur. If you're so determined to get your point across, try and actually have one, little mate.

Cheers for your time, invalid.

On topic, I've just come out of an hour's go. I like some of the features, but unfortunately a capped FPS and nasty visuals make it quite unpleasant to play, and the unlimited sprint has been thought up by some sort of mongol. Seeing people just whizz about at lightning speed is more than a bit shitty, but the FPS part of the game is becoming smoother. I just wish the default controls weren't all over the shop, innit.

I agree but that would make it a hell of a lot harder for the GDF.

It is extraordinarily choppy and jerky compared to playing games on the Source engine or the Q3A engine. I think it's an intrinsic problem with the Doom 3/Quake 4/ET:QW engine, all of those games' multiplayers were the same kind of choppy. It's even more pronounced in this game because it's manic and has way more shit going on. Close range infantry combat (the only thing I enjoy) is just so goddamn frustrating, inconsistent and downright terrible that it virtually kills the game for me, even running at the bare minimum settings on an A64 3500+ at 2.6GHz, X1900XT and 2gb of RAM.

Noticing that you said in the multiplayer they are all bad. Seems like netcode.....if it plays a lot better on a lan game versus net game then that's probably what the problem is. Game probably doesn't handle latency very well. Probably favors the lowest ping. On the other hand, I think Battlefield 2/2142 favors the higher ping players in most cases. It's hard to keep an eye on the pings while you play, but that's just my guess on the issue. Not video related at all (barring the FPS cap versus someone whose uncapped giving them an advantage...haven't experimented with it yet).

Plus to top it off, the vehicles driving like they are tractors instead of trucks (large turn radius, not very responsive, no shocks).

Unless they fix the weird hit-detection and sluggish vehicle controls, there's not much going for the game. Albeit it's cool to watch the artillery fire and arc through the sky to it's target and not have a fog of war battlefield style, the quirks are irritating enough to offset anything I like about the game at this point.

When I regularly encounter something to the effect of:

Approach someone from behind with shotgun. Get up point blank and blast them with it. They start hopping around and I can never hit them again even though the gun is clearly pointed at them when it fires on multiple shots, and then I die.

Or

PlayerX[GDF] using assault rifle walks into the building near EMP, kills Strogg teammate who saw him coming, kills me who watched teammate die and was shooting PlayerX when I could, then kills yet another Strogg teammate before reloading. Just this one guy owning anyone he went up against unless the guy shooting him had a rocket launcher or shotgun and killed him in the first hit. This went on for rounds with this guy doing this... unfortunately I didn't think to watch his ping to see if he had a really low one compared to others...was too busy shouting "HOW IN THE HELL!".

The technician is more of a combat role than the GDF medic. The medic's priority is to revive, while the technician, since the revive isn't instant, has a priority to secure the area before reviving and making spawn hosts. The medic is not suppose to charge in all guns firing, he's supposed to hang back, giving ammo and rushing in to revive when he can.

If we had a map where GDF was defending I'm sure people would complain about the medic being overpowered because of the instant revive.

After uncapping the fps and improving the graphics with r_megadrawmethod 0 im starting to get into this game Why dont we start a [H] group i would love to see some fellow [H]'rs on the battlefield.

Remember the medic can drop a supply crate with both ammo and health, and if you get headshots, you need less shots to kill. Most classes don't spawn with full ammo, so dropping a crate just outside of spawn is worthwhile. Closer to the action is better when you can get away with it of course.

Unlike RTCW and ET, you fieldops support fire and ammo packs don't come out of the same "charge bar" so they should lay down a lot of ammo as well.

Once people figure these things out, ammo shouldn't be much of an issue.

There are currently known problems with the hit detection, which the developers are working on a patch for. For a running player, leading by about a body width seems to give best results for me. Obviously in a close strafe fights you aren't gonna be able to really lead 'em but sweeping at head level works pretty well. You also have to lead fast moving vehicles.

If you are having trouble getting over 30 fps, you can try com_unlock_timingmethod 0 or 1. The downside is your FPS will be less stable. If you want nonstandard widescreen resolutions without distortion, you can set a custom aspect ratio.

htmlcvars in the console will give you a nice html table of most of the cvars with descriptions, written to cvars.html in your game directory.

any word on the sound? I uninstalled the game b/c I kept getting headaches from it.

really like the concept of the game, but like reyalp said, the performance and hitbox bug really annoys me. Mainly the performance. If they can do better at the coding it should be a one of the best FPS of the year

Does anyone know which games that are similiar to the BF series in scope HAVEN'T had hitbox issues? maybe its just inherent to doing this type of game

But it shouldn't be an issue. There have been successful large scale FPS games in the past that haven't had hitbox issues, why does making it a team game or adding vehicles change that? Look at quake, cs, ut, tribes, etc - none of them had particularly bad hitbox issues and they supported more than 24 players if the server was set as such. Granted, they've had time to iron out issues and maybe that's just what ETQW needs, but it's not like this is id's first time making a multiplayer game. The only difference I see is poor netcode. Adding vehicles shouldn't affect the hitboxes at all, especially in infantry-only small arms combat.

Something is wrong with the weapons, they don't feel accurate and timed well. I do okay, but I ca't seem to hit things when I am right on them. it takes a while, Forget sniping. I was really hoping they would bring back some of the timings and feelings from Quake 2

I love seeing people bitch and complain about how the game sucks and what not...its a beta not a full blown release WE know there are issues as do the devs, so stop bitching already. As for VOIP...I turn it off unless I need to amused by 12 year olds cussing left and right, throwing out random racial slurs or just flat out spamming the mic with whatever hidious noise they can. At a LAN it would be a good thing, on a private server it would be a good thing but on a public server screw it. Otherwise I hated RTCW:ET but yet enjoy QW alot, once they work out the bugs im sure itll be that much better.

We are keeping in mind that's it's still beta, but also that it's not alpha. Given the engine's past issues and the current ones I am doubt full that it will ever be all better. They would have to totally re-write the net code from scratch just to get me to buy it. I had to play some CS:S because I was so frustrated at the jerkiness.

I know this was asked before, but I can't seem to find the thread. How does one enable the console in game? I know you must type something into the short-cut, but have no idea what...thanks!
