Enemy Territory Quake Wars Beta

Supposedly the higher level effects were removed from this beta...

You can see with this video that explosions have shock wave effects, maybe there are some other subtle differences too, like I don't think HDR is enabled in the beta, but it looks like it is in the video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-trDO8d1CPQ&mode=related&search=

i have to agree awesome video graphics are really good. the shockwave effects are impressive. i hope when game is finished its just like the video you posted if not better.

Two things:

1.) Regarding the resolution not being supported, did you change the aspect ratio selection? There's two drop down menus, one has resolution and the other has aspect ratio. I haven't checked personally, but I would have a hard time imagining that 1920x1080 isn't supported under the 16:9 dropdown. I know it's a silly question, but I figured you might have overlooked it.

2.) Regarding the mouse lag, do you have dual monitors by any chance? I had the same issue and I run two. Disabling the secondary monitor completely cleared up the lag in the game for me (short of server side anyway) and I jumped from about 5 fps up to 30.

And even if it isn't supported, I'm surprised he doesn't know how to edit an ini file or create a cfg file. Some of the complaints here valid but the rest are due to ignorance. "omgz, it's tHe eNd of the world, nOthing wiLL chAnge tHis game since iTs b3ta.GaMEPLaY is tOO faSt I caNNot kiLL anYone.

Yea it's not supported under widescreen only 1280 and 1600 I believe, and 1280 scales better but everything is still really blury. I wonder if the full version will support my screen? I am running dual 37" screens but why would that affect mouse movement? I'll try disabeling one next time I play. I know the Nvidia drivers took me hours to figure out how to get my second screen to even run 1080p. They have alot of issues. I do only have a 7800 GT

its called ventrilo

from my experience, in game voice chat as usually been pretty shitty. hence the reason to use an outside program. its not a big deal if they don't put it in.

Arent the majority of people going to jump into an internet game and play with strangers? How are they supposed to make use of ventrilo this way?

The only game I've played with in game VOIP are the Source games and its totally transparent and works and sounds great...

This type of game requires its own VOIP plain and simple...

I thought that the beta was interesting but hardly revolutionary. In fact, after playing it for some time, I didn't feel that it was even evolutionary. It felt like a lot of other games that I have already played. I know this is a beta and I will wait to see the finished product, but I must say that my enthusiasm is somewhat muted after playing the beta.

I hope that my initial impressions of the game are proved wrong when the finished product is released.

That's really weird that there's no option for 1920x1080, but editing a config file is probably a viable option like Sixthsense said.

Regarding the dual monitor issue, I'm not sure what's causing it, but here's the thread I found at the beta forums: http://www.forumplanet.com/QuakeWars/topic.asp?fid=28179&tid=2066306

it does NOT require it. after playing RTCW and ET for years, in both clans and by myself, you can get by just fine in pubs without voice chat

I've read there was a demo of effects to be on 8800 only ? Are these explosions what I've read about ? Hard to believe they're using SM4. Is it something else ?

Correct. It doesnt REQUIRE it...bad choice of words on my part. But there's no excuse for a team game like this to not have it built in now adays. You can most definitely "get by" with in game commands but that defeats the purpose of a game thats supposed to be team based. It makes it so much easier to let others know whats going on and makes the game more friendly as well. I dont know why you'd want to just "get by" when it cant be all that hard to incorporate it into the game. Will it stop me from playing the game if I think its cool? No but it's a feature that should be in every team game these days.

That's my argument and I'm sticking to it. Whatever they spam is less offensive and annoying to me than a bunch of retards yapping in a public server. Talk about immersion breaking.

Well it depends on the game doesn't it? In BF you can just join a different squad or get out of one all together if someone is annoying you. The bottom line is VOIP can be implemented in a way that allows you to turn it off or better yet allow you to select individuals for muting. Wouldn't you rather have the option to use it or turn it off?

Anyway, right now there's absolutely nothing you can do in QuakeWars when some dipshits spam the hissing noise for 10 minutes.

I've read there was a demo of effects to be on 8800 only ?

That's what I hear, but even people with 8800's aren't seeing them in the current beta.

Wait a sec - Isn't that the definition of a first person shooter? ROFL

Not really. In some FPS games you can go about, crouch, aim, shoot at people, have it connect, CoD/BF-style. In others, you run about madly, see an enemy, continue running about madly pissing bullets all over the shop, UT-style. I prefer the former, because I don't feel like a massive spastic child when playing it. Unfortunately, QW seems to fall into the latter category.

uh its not about killing people. its about completing objectives. if you want quake go play quake. its a team game...something i would think you'd realize since you play 2142...OH WAIT...

EDIT: its amazing to see all the haters already lol. "OMG ITS NOT BF" "OMG ITS NOT QUAKE" Duh?

It's good to see that you're putting words into my mouth, and less than coherently, too. Good work, squire.

Well QW is a twitchy-type FPS unlike the BF series. I also prefer the BF series style battles but this is just a different choice. And choice is good. :) QW is far from a "BF killer" because it's so different and the gameplay at this point is worlds different. I hope QW turns out well because I think it's got potential and could be a blast. So far I'm a little disappointed and like 1186 said my enthusiasm for this game is also "muted". Now if only EA can get those dang BF2 stats working again...

Righto, Julian. As I said, (something people seem to be overlooking in their eagerness to give it the old pontification) my objection isn't with buggy performance or a lack of polish, it's to do with the fact that had the controls been slightly more streamlined and the actual FPS portion of the gameplay a bit crisper it would have been ideal, since the idea behind the game appeals to me; dropping in engineer emplacements, attacking points in sequence, etc. The problem isn't the fact that it's "beta", it's that I wasn't expecting it to be Quake MP, and I felt disappointed, because it could have been so much more.

I have to edit a config file? Won't that just stretch the graphics like in BF2, Seems BF2 does not support it either. But WoW does, and C&C3. I might have to ditch the second 37" and go back to my good ol CRT.

I couldn't tell you as I haven't tried it myself. Though if it's any indication, the quake games have tended to have pretty good widescreen support even with edited config files. You should be alright, but again, you'd have to try it yourself to know for sure.

Either way though, at least it wouldn't render blurry even if it was stretched.

actually, it is a big deal. There are lots of people like me who don't play with one regular group. In-game voice communication is very, very old now, and for a modern, teamplay-based fps to not have it is unacceptable in my opinion.

I , along with many, were mislead by the way ID marketed QW: ET. I thought this game was going to be close to battlefield in the sense of squads and vehicles. To me, this game just feels awkward. The vehicles are there, but they feel wierd and operate like weaksauce. The run and gun gameplay is so old , it is not as fun as it used to be. I believe the main problem of the game is how ID marketed it.

Quake Wars supports most widescreen resolutions natively. The only time you need to edit the config is for the more rare resolutions or if you want to bump your FoV. A person with a 16:9 or 16:10 res will see more on the edges than someone with a 4:3.

The vehicles are there, but they feel wierd and operate like weaksauce.

Did you try with advanced vehicle controls set on? It's still not quite the same as BF but much better IMO.

I have to edit a config file? Won't that just stretch the graphics like in BF2

When you edit config files, (most of the time) you are taking a 4:3 resolution, zooming in and chopping off the top and bottom. You do not get a widescreen FOV. Only interface items such as maps, health bars and speedometers will be stretched.

In my opinion, its a crappy solution but its way better than stretching all of the graphics and a little better than leaving out 25% of your monitor for black bars. Having oval gauges instead of circles bothers me and I hate having my bumper chopped off in racing games. Is QW published by EA? I thought only EA, a few random publishers and a handful of Ubisoft games still punished widescreen users.

edit: posted before I saw J-Mag's post - "Quake Wars supports most widescreen resolutions natively."

The game was choppy as hell at 30fps. I am now at 60fps and iits a whole lot smoother. I recommend everybody unlocking the fps.
I set my max to 90fps but it stays at 60fps. Refresh is at 75hz I must not have set something up right.
Playing on an E4300@ 2.0Ghz, !Gb ram with a BFG7800GS OC @ 500/1.44.

I am pretty sure I'm running in full 1920x1080 on mine. I will look when I get home. I have a 2407FPW and set it to 16:10 and it showed up then.

It's awful. They went all hyperactive superspastic-style gameplay on it, when I was hoping that it would actually be worth playing. I don't like the "run around looking for bad guys and then just pissing whatever weapons you have at them until one of you dies" approach. Not the 2142 replacement i'd hoped for. Pretty crap, in fact.

It's good to see that you're putting words into my mouth, and less than coherently, too. Good work, squire.

who says i was putting words into your mouth? read what you said.

BF = huge maps using primarily vehicles to get around as well as mostly vehicular combat. each side seems to be equal in terms of offense and defense, i.e. "symetrical" maps. takes time to get to where the action is.

RTCW/ET series = smaller maps with use of vehicles optional or not allowed, more focused on run and gun battles and completing objectives to finish the mission. one side is defense, other is offense, not equal parts as in most BF maps. maps can be completely unbalanced and require you to mass rush the first objective (i.e. in ET, the map Battery).

as i said before...if you're looking for a game like BF, this isn't it. its not something you take your time to play like BF is. its based off quake so battles are going to be run and gun. but at the same time, you can't just do that the whole 20 mins. you have to complete objectives to win the map.

but whatever...one more player slot in a full server for me if you decide not to play :p

That used to be the case, but ever since Doom 3 patch 1.3 iirc. They added a cvar which addresses aspect ratio (fortunately carried over to Quake 4 as well). Which is seta r_aspectRatio "x" , ( x being 1 for 16:9 and 2 for 16:10. So the contents of an autoexec.cfg or qw.cfg (whatever it may be) would look like this

seta r_customHeight "1080"
seta r_customWidth "1920"
seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_aspectRatio "1"

Well looks like everything is native , even the real odd aspect ratios.http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10845

With the words "WARS" and "ENEMY TERRITORY" many are going to think its a BF2 esque game.

I'd prefer to believe most people will end up associating Quake Wars: Enemy Territory with, oh I dunno, Enemy Territory. I mean, there seems to be a subtle resemblance between the two games, but I can't quite grasp it.

I won't be buying it, that's for sure. Just not at all what I expected. Poor/jerky movement (yes, good fps), terrible sounds, bland graphics, poor vehicle physics, no VOIP, lack of any communication, minimal teamplay, too much run and gun, no strategy, etc...

I pre-ordered it prior to the open beta but I'll take my $5 deposit as a loss. Just glad an open beta was released prior to me actually buying it.

Just not my thing and just my 2 cents.

they both have guns. and snow. actually wait I don't know if quake wars has snow. if it doesn't then it needs snow, because snow in video games just makes me happy. now if it does have snow, then kudos to the devs because they haven't forgotten us, and if they havent now, I doubt they ever will. like wrath of god so eloquently put it, this is my 2 cents and im sticking to it!

go to the top mountain on the right side looking towards the sewer...you go up on the slope near the spawn point that the GDF captures. i snipe up there :)

There goes your credibility. ;)

pretty much

While the discussion is still hot. Someone point out to me where the ingame ads are in the beta. I just can't find them. :)

I have the details lowered to the point I wouldnt even be able to recognize the ads.

Well, it's my opinion. My definition of strategy and yours are obviously different. ;)

QW:ET is far from a strategic shooter IMO.

It had strategies and objectives and the formula of quake in it basically. A little bit of spice from every area ;). If you liked wolfet then you'll like this surely most likely.

Alright, I've spent 15 hours with the beta now, and I can definitely say that I absolutely love this game.

It took a lot of time to get used to, it really has to grow on you and there's so much available to you at first that it's really overwhelming and somewhat offputting. Within my first 2 hours of play all I could say was "I can't fucking believe I signed up to fileplanet for this". At around 7 hours, my thoughts were "well it's better than I thought at first, and I am having fun, but there's just too much wrong with the game to be a day one purchase". At 15 hours, right now, I'm incredibly impressed and having a GREAT time. I cannot believe what a 180 my opinion of this game has taken.

It's all the little details that really seal the deal for me, things like the "Tribes-like" skiing with the jetpack or spotting a spy by his heavy breathing, and with some polish I could see playing this game for a LONG time to come. I think I'm going to head into town and preorder it tomorrow.

Honestly, for all of you who didn't like the game at first, give it a chance, keep at it for a while. I was right there with you at first, and I came very close to quitting but I kept playing and I've ended up loving this game.

On a sidenote, it may not have a demanding graphics engine, but for me that's more of a plus when it comes to a purely multiplayer shooter. It means that even with my modest rig, I can run at 1280x1024 with everything set to high and still have 4XAA and 16XAF. Booya!

I can't get the FPS uncapping to work, and the damn game is insanely choppy at 30 FPS. Plus, the movement, the aiming, and the overall view of the game are just jerky and laggy feeling. It might just be an intrinsic feature of large scale online multiplayer games, but the netcode feels like the same piss poor stuff that put me off of the Battlefield series. The battlie is much more infantry oriented than in the Battlefield games (at least on this map) which is a plus for me. I like the XP system, that was one of my favorite features in Wolf:ET. It gives an incentive and reward for playing well and doing your class's job. It would be much better if it werent for the logistical shortcomings of the damn engine.

for those wondering how it looks, here are a couple shots...first one i managed to capture the arty just as it fired...kinda cool

image was resized btw
shot00001rw9.jpg

this is also capturing it firing but from across the map...interesting because when you look thru binocs or any scope for that matter, textures go to shit. it might be designed that way so it isn't so slow or it could be because its a beta and its a bug. who knows. there should be the plume of fire above the barrel but its not there. i have a screen from the same spot while it wasn't firing and the textures are darkened so the lighting works, just not the particles from the arty. i've also seen lighted squares around vehicle models and character models when they fire their weapons. pretty much the same distance draw bug.

shot00002cf7.jpg

Not played the beta, I will wait for the demo, but all I can say so far is that this game doesn't look like it offers anything worth paying for, I might have bought the game despite this if it was a good laugh to play but the advertising in the game sealed it for me, I just cannot support games that use this kind of advertising, we simply cannot encourage it.

I've had the beta for about a week.....

I'm kinda on the fence about it really. Sometimes I have fun, other times it's just an exercise in frustration.

The game plays smooth, but when you go to shoot someone it's like they are never where the game shows them when they are moving even the slightest bit.

Might be due to the servers for this game being unstable as all hell at this point in time. Get the network disconnect symbol, freeze in place for awhile, and all the other fun stuff like disconnecting after you got all those neat little unlocks or server crashing.. To be expected, but if the demo plays like this...then think I may have to pass on this game.

I don't know if they are going to make any of the unlocks persistent beyond a match, but I think it's going to get a bit old if you have to earn them every match. I know they said they didn't want the "new" players to be overmatched by persistent unlocks, but as it stands now the "old" players will have all the unlocks anyway rather quickly. So I don't see the point of limiting all of them to a match by match basis.

Going through the classes, probably screw up some names:

Soldier/Aggressor - Run super slow with the big guns...seems like the GDF rocket launcher is a little faster/better than Strogg. Hyperblaster/GPMG is strong.... Pretty solid class choice and I can't find any faults with them.

Medic/Technician - Medics can call in supply crates, but hardly anyone bothers. GDF side can revive people instantly, I think Strogg revive is too slow. Would rather seem the revive be on a cooldown for Strogg than have that little dial you gotta wait for all the time. Spawn Hosts are cool, but I havent seen any markings for them on the minimap. So when you're told a spawn host is created, you dunno where the hell it might be if you're not the one creating it. Medics can destroy spawn hosts fast....really fast. I think the technician is probably stronger simply because the stroyant gives both ammo and health, BUT this is also a drawback......since people will pick up the stroyant if they have spent even 1 ammo. So most the time the techs run around picking up the very stroyant they throw down for others, and most people don't pay attention to see everyone around them is nearly dead still.

Engineer/Constructor - Constructs take too long to air drop in and become active in my opinion, or on the flip side, they need to be stronger or not go "disabled" as quickly. Proximity mines are good but often times won't kill. Trip mines usually kill but are a pain in the butt to place. They either won't let you place them, or often times in the sewer doors they will go into the little door grooves instead of across the door way..making them useless. Havent played as much Engineer as Constructor, but the upgraded repair tool on constructor is awesome. Makes it a lot less painful being a constructor. Can set it to repair and walk off instead of being sniper bait.

Spec Ops/Oppressor - Fun to call down artillery. GDF side gives out ammo packs....useful if you're running around in the hills calling down artillery and taking pot shots. Strogg side has the tactical shield (awesome for stopping yourself from getting sniped), teleporter (think I've used it twice.....), etc. I think the strogg side is the neater of the two personally.

And the sniper guys, can't recall the titles they gave em. - Both have radar drops, GDF gets the third eye cam..little radar, bomb, remote cam in one unit. Strogg get the flyer drone..I prefer the flyer because the third eye cam has a charge up time to explode which makes it pretty hard to time correctly. Overall I feel these guys get cheated...I guess the disguise is supposed to make up for it. But, it's pretty easy to tell when someone's disguised by their breathing or if they are hurt and can't pick up your sides health packs. Think they need to give these guys more love.....maybe a third weapon that's not accurized. Or another ability... Even if it's one that another class has. Like give them the ability to call down supply crates or a flyer drone. I like that they get a silenced machine pistol as an upgrade, but it really needs to be default to make them be more fun to play.

Vehicles drive like crap if you ask me. I spend more time getting ran over by em than I do driving em because people can't steer them due to their horrible controls. GDF tank is about the only really useful vehicle in the game, hog is cool to ram things with...but again it's pretty hard to steer anything.

The fliers the strogg get, they are useful.....and they are the Stroggs worst enemy at the same time. Useful to get around, useful to kill vehicles, useful to blow up mines, constructed things, etc. Enemy because they will blow up friendly mines, I've been killed a ton by people going stroybomb happy and setting off proximity mines. And once the fight hits the sewets, everyone wants to hop around stroybombing. Which again takes out all the trip mines and proximity mines constructors have up....and will usually hurt if not kill teammates...and if they do kill you. You usually get finished off by them stroybombing your unconcious body. Wish they would stop spawning once the game goes into the sewers....or make it so they can't go through the shields or something. Not to mention people driving hogs, atvs and other things into the sewers.

And, overall I think the sides are decently matched. I like the Strogg layout better myself, I think the GDF have it tough on ammo in comparison to Strogg. And, I don't particularly like the map. Although I'd be interested in seeing it reversed, GDF defending and Strogg attacking. Just to see how it plays then.

I won't be buying it, that's for sure. Just not at all what I expected. Poor/jerky movement (yes, good fps),
its a beta!, ou cant judge such things based upon the beta. It has been ocnfirmed that there are things in the beta that are fixed for the final

terrible sounds
yr opinion but again beta, they have stripped it

, bland graphics
again it is stripped for the beta, this open-beta is for testing other things NOT gfx!

poor vehicle physics
ok ill give you this one the ground vehicals are hard/too responsive on default settings... so change the sensitivity

Oh please!!! anyone playing games seriously uses 3rd part VOIP since for starters the in-game one gets flooded by 13yo pre-pubecent virgins who have just learnt a swearword! the in-game VOIP is one of the first things that gets disabled by most people

, lack of any communication
Err.. there is fireteam, team, global chat. Qukcchat menu (like W:ET and what BF* has) so that is just a lie!

minimal teamplay
 have you even played the game or just bitchen?
its all about Teamplay! that is what the ET games have been abt.
Its all abt funneling people to a common-objective!

In all the years I have played Battle-field-* I have seen some teamwork or none at all. BF* is just take&hold gameplay and you can take any flag you want. In quakewars to progress certain things MUST happen thus focusing the gameplay. Even if you don't want to work as a team the fact it is centred around current objective means you will be helping those that do. Then bring in the fireteams and you see that QW is all abt teamplay.

, too much run and gun, no strategy, etc...
As stated all yr cred is GONE!

I pre-ordered it prior to the open beta but I'll take my $5 deposit as a loss. Just glad an open beta was released prior to me actually buying it.

Just not my thing and just my 2 cents.

Yr opinion but don't judge the game on the BETA sure do with the demo but not the beta, that's just not fair. This beta actually run alot better then a final build of any of the BF* games and it is a beta with bugs, bugs that have been confirmed to be fixed in final (double-sprint, prone-jutter....)
