Ultimate OEM On Newegg!

so you guys are telling me to install the OS using the same CD key onto a *different* machine other than my laptop tonight, and *then* see if the call center will let me activate? :) Because I'll be glad to give it a shot tonight

No, all we said is that you used a key that had never been activated before. That key, however, was tied to a specific manufacturer and therefore couldn't be activated online. The phone support person doens't know what manufacturer your hardware was made by though, so when you told him the right answer that gave him the green light ot give you the code to activate.

to add to what has been said about OEM licenses:

I remember reading from multiple sources that Vista would include protections for OEMs to make sure that the OS copy can only be installed onto a certain type of motherboard. At least my little experiment proves this one thing wrong so far...

ooohhh, I see what you are saying now...

I always thought that somehow within that long string of numbers that you have to read to the person that somehow there was a number identifying the brand of your motherboard at least :)

I'm still going to try and transfer this license to yet *another* computer, because if I can do that, and especially within a short period of time, it should give a *giant* green light to people waiting on the OEM to see how restrictive it is

Maybe for now it'd be a green light. But remember, Vista isn't techinally launched yet (unless I missed something), and phone techs may not have been inserviced on new policies yet.

I don't think that's really practical if even possible. Those COA's are printed in quantity and shipped to the OEM's It'd be a huge slowdown in production to have to match the COA stickers to the motherboards in the case. Most likely it's the generic key that's being talked about, but those have been hard to transfer even for XP.

damn you, foiling me at every turn!

haha, just kidding.... anyway, I'm guessing that the tech's themselves wont have to be update on any new protocols or anything like that....

because: when I was activating this key, the guy that was on the line had me read the numbers to him, after that was done he said "i need to verify the key, but my computer is old and not working right now, please stay on the line while I use a new system". and it was with that "new system" that he gave me my activation with.

Yea, I know it seems really shaky, but thats what he said, and I get the feeling that the techs just punch in the keys and let the computer tell them if its good/bad, and when they feel like being nice (which is 100% of the time I've called them on XP, and now this one time with Vista), they can override and give you activation anyway.

Thats my theory anyway.... we'll see how things work out in the coming months when many many many more people try this out :)

That's the point I was trying to make...and let me to wonder why he "was sure" it used the same key as the side of the case. Thanks for typing that in much more detail than I went!
