Geforce 256 DDR
Geforce 3
Radeon 9700 Pro
Radeon X800 Pro
Geforce 8800 GTS
Geforce GTX 460
Geforce GTX 780 Ti
Geforce GTX 980
Geforce GTX 1070

Mine is now:

- 3Dfx Voodoo 2
- Nvidia Geforce2 MX
- Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4200
- Nvidia FX 5700 (what a shit card)
- Nvidia 6600GT (AGP)
- Nvidia 8800GTS (640MB ver)
- Nvidia GTX 260 core 216
- Nvidia GTX 580
- Nvidia GTX 980 (reference)
- Nvidia GTX 1080 FTW DT
- Nvidia GTX 1080 FTW2 DT iCX ($99 ACX->iCX upgrade from EVGA)
- Nvidia GTX 1080Ti SC Black (Stepup program through EVGA)

My biggest mistake was the FX 5700, as I should have gone with ATI during that time.
Other than that, I have been pleased with NVIDIA, although I would like to own an AMD GPU sometime if they become competitive on the high-end again. My only AMD/ATI GPU has been a Mobility Radeon HD 3200 IGP on my old tablet pc.

3Dfx Voodoo 2
Geforce 2 GTS
Radeon 9500 (Softmodded to a 9700)
Geforce 8800 GTX x2 (Massive waste of money)
Radeon HD4850 (awesome card but only 512 mb)
Radeon 280x (bought new)
Radeon 290x(bought used for $50 more then what I sold the 280x for)

Waiting on Vega, will most likely buy the top model if available and its actually good. If not I will get a 1080 TI

Radeon X700 Pro (256MB of goodness; made for a great exp with Half Life 2)
Nvidia 560 Ti, then another for SLI
Nvidia 580 (replaced the 560 Ti's)
GTX 780
GTX 970
Titan X (SLI)

I was more into gaming on other people's PC's (and a few laptops + the Alienware M9700 in there at one point, still have it!), so I missed the good old Geforce 4 days.

My rig doesn't even get turned on now (have two laptops I'm on constantly for work and start-up project work), so I doubt I'll upgrade for a few years.

GeForce 9800 GTX (2009 - 2013)
Radeon R9 270 (2014 - 2016)
GeForce 1080 (2017 - current)

Planning on picking up a second 1080 or 1070 for the wife's rig. Don't really plan on upgrading either until we decide to move past 1440p / 144hz displays.

My list.
  • Voodoo 1, Orchid Righteous - Can still hear the clicks.
  • Voodoo 2, Orchid Righteous.
  • Matrox G400 - Slow in 3D, great for multi-monitor setups.
  • Nvidia Geforce 4mx - Awful, but I was a poor student.
  • ATI Radeon 9600 - Shader pipe corruption after failed unlock -> back to my shitty Geforce 4mx.
  • Nvidia Geforce 6800GT
  • Nvidia Geforce 7900GT - VRMs blew, so returned it -> back to my GT6800GT
  • ATI Radeon 3870X2 - Crossfire was awful in most games.
  • ATI Radeon 4870 - Framebuffer corruption shortly ofter warranty expired.
  • ATI Radeon 5870XT - Still going strong in an old gaming PC.
  • ATI Radeon 6850 x 2 - Unlocked in CF - Crossfire still sucked so sold them both and went back to the 5870.
  • Nvidia Geforce 670
  • Nvidia Geforce 980Ti

More than likely AMD next few months, 1070 has put me off nvidia due to drivers and gsync(tax) , I also expect more performance from an $800 card than MOSTLY doing 1080P max details
gsync/freesync is a must have now

I'm certain posterity will one day look upon this thread in awe and humility. Here follows my contribution:

2005: EVGA 7800 GTX 256MB ($459)
2006: EVGA 7900 GTX 512MB (StepUp. +1 to Buyer's Remorse mitigation.)
2009: EVGA 9800 GT 1024MB ($170... wait, seriously?)
2011: EVGA GTX 570 Classified 1280MB (Best $340 I ever spent.)
2015: ASUS GTX 970 STRIX 4GB (Second best $340 I ever spent.)
2016: ASUS GTX 1080 STRIX 8GB (Best 2x $340 I ever spent.)

I didn't set out to become an nVidia fanboy, but my initial experience with EVGA products and support was stellar, so I stuck with them. I wasn't happy with what I perceived as diminished product quality when I was shopping for a 970, so I jumped ship to ASUS. And, well, here I am.

I don't even remember them all after 20 years+, but here goes, roughly chronological with mobile cards italicized...

Matrox something or other
Voodoo 1 (or 2?)
TNT2
Geforce 256
Geforce 3 Ti
Tridant Blade 16mb
Geforce Ti4400
Geforce 5900 XT
Radeon 9700
Geforce 6800 GT (Unlocked shaders, SLI)
Geforce 6800 GTX
Geforce 7800 GTO (SLI)
Radeon x1800 XT
Radeon x1900 XTX (Crossfire)
Geforce 8800 GTX (SLI)
HD 4870 (Tri-fire)
HD 4870 X2
Geforce 9800 GT (SLI)
HD 5870 (Crossfire)

Geforce GTX 480 (Quad-SLI, the "barn burner")
Radeon 6970
Geforce GTX 485m (SLI)

HD 7870 (Crossfire)
Geforce GTX 680 (Tri-SLI)
HD 7870 (Crossfire)
Geforce GTX 680m (Tri-SLI)
Geforce GTX 780m (SLI)

RD 290x (Crossfire)
Geforce GTX 980m
RD 295x
R9 Fury (Unlocked shaders, Crossfire)
Geforce 1080 GTX

Doing the math, if I consider that's around $400 per card on average, that's a lot of $cabbage$

I'll try to remember:

AMD 3D Rage II
Nvidia Riva TNT 2
Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti 200
Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT
Nvidia GeForce GTX 295
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti
Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

Nvidia is my preference because upgrading from 3D Rage to TNT 2 was HUGE. I was a kid back then, had no clue about video cards. AMD card was such crap compared to Nvidia. I saw a huge upgrade to my video games. Then I Went with Ti 200 and saw even bigger upgrade. Then it just stuck, I've been Nvidia guy since then, although I have nothing against ATI/AMD.

I may have missed a card here or there, but this is what sticks out in my mind.

S3 Savage 3D
GeForce2 MX400
Radeon 8500

Nv msi GTX 460 - $40 LOL, didnt use long
Nv evga GTX 660 2GB - $60 in late 2016. Using until PSU upgrade for the 970.
Nv evga GTX 970 4GB - $140 in May '17. I usually don't have the best, but at least I get some screamig deals. :woot::woot::woot::woot:

Wow...mine goes way back. So I shall begin:

eVGA GeForce GTX 280 PCI-E
eVGA GeForce GTX 480 512MB PCI-E
eVGA GeForce GTX 680 SC 2GB PCI-E
eVGA GeForce GTX 980 SC 4GB PCI-E
eVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC 8GB PCI-E

There you have it. Out!

I got into PC gaming in 2010.

My progression:

ATI 5770 --> gtx 560ti --> gtx 770 --> gtx 970.

I picked up the last one from craigslist for $160, and only because the 770 started overheating. At 1080p 144hz I see absolutely no need to upgrade. Maybe next generation when the performance of the 1070 can be had for $200 or less.

Onboard/can't remember 90's
Then I was able to buy my own:
PNY Geforce FX 5200
Sapphire Radeon X1600
MSI Geforce GTX 9600
Palit Geforce GTX 570
Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1070

Just counting my cards, and not what was stuff in my parent's computers:

Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 (wished I'd have gone with the Radeon 9800)
Nvidia GeForce 6800GT
Dell Nvidia GeForce 8600M (College laptop)
Diamond ATI Radeon 5850
EVGA Nvidia GTX 970
EVGA Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti (Finally reached the top!)

Pro use case: huge jump in performance.

This is probably as far as I'll go, if I need more, I'll just rent an NVLink enabled multi-GPU system on AWS.

I love this thread. I've been doing my own retrospective for a few years now, as things have changed so fast and I wanted to remember my own progress. Here it is!

upload_2017-6-3_9-0-0.png

Seeing my friend's Riva TNT2 in like '98(?) started me on the path.

Geforce 256 SDR (died in about a year)
Geforce 2 MX
9600XT (died in a year)
9600XT (one of the few times I've bought a replacement plan) :D
9800GT - still works
GTX 470 - still works
GTX 660Ti - still works, htpc
GTX 980 SLI
GTX 1080 Ti

OEM GT520
MSI GTX470 Hawk
SLI EVGA GTX 680s
EVGA GTX 1080 Ti

I flirted briefly with Crossfire R9 290s but I went through four (none achieved States clock speeds short of overclocking) and Newegg still tried to prevent me from getting a refund.

Man Let me think...

EVGA 6600GT
BFG 8800GT x2
Asus ROG Matrix Platinum 5870
Asus ROG Matrix Platinum 7970
Gigabyte Windforce Xtreme Gaming 970
Asus Strix 1070
Asus Strix 1080
Asus Strix 1080Ti

Whats Next?

Let me see here...it was:

BFG 7600GT
BFG 8800GTS (320mb)
Asus 4870
Unbranded 5870
MSI 270 (with another Sapphire for crossfire)
Sapphire 290
MSI 290 (due to the sapphire one not working)
Currently running a Sapphire Fury

I'm not a fan of any brand, but it does seem that I've been favoring AMD...still though, that 1080ti sure looks pretty tasty...
