I just haven't ever hit ATi when they've been on a good cycle, lol. I had no reason to get an x1xxx or 7xxx which was my best shot at going ATi. GTX 580 was the second best shot, but for me nVidia won this round with GPGPU and ambient occlusion (driver panel AO I have found is something I just can't live without in some games- Mass Effect 1 is a prime example).

Ahaha, yeah, those were the days. I remember i paid almost 500$ for these two cards. This was with a Pentium II 300 "SL2W8" overclocked to 450 Mhz. This sounds little but considering that the 450 MHz was three times more expensive as the 300 MHz, I was soooo proud of that setup hehe

Haha! My dad and I were playing a game called MotorHead back then. It was a racing game that was almost completely dependent on your fps for the cars to have grip. Such an absurd idea right now, but I remember all the fastest guys ran Voodoo2 SLI.

This is just the GPUs from my main rigs starting in 1992 -- lots of other video cards in my wife's computer and servers over time.

You can see that I'm a big NVIDIA fan. Nobody seems to come close with driver quality, particularly OpenGL/Linux support.

Love these threads! I have owned more video cards then I can remember on my various secondary rigs, but these stand out as the ones I used the longest.

1. Diamond Speedstar Pro on my 486-66.
2. Matrox Mystique 2MB on my P200.
3. Voodoo 3 16MB on my K6-2 350. Long live 3dfx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Geforce 2 32MB on my P3 1GHz.
5. Geforce 4 Ti4200 64MB on my 1st Athlon XP rig.
6. Radeon 9700 Pro on my 2nd Athlon XP (what an awesome card).
7. Geforce 6800GT on my 2nd Athlon XP rig.
8. Geforce 7950GT on my 1st Core 2 rig.
9. Geforce 9800GT on my 1st Core 2 rig.
10. Geforce 9600GSO on my current POS Core 2 rig.
11. Geforce GTS 250 on my current POS Core 2 rig.

As you can see, I like Nvidia.....but that 9700 is still probably one of the most impressive cards ever made! I remember being completely blown away by that card and wish I still had it for my current Athlon XP / Nforce 1 rig that is in my shop!

I've honestly been wanting to go Nvidia but the option of 6950 CF won me over.

ATi Radeon LE

ATi Radeon 1800XL (was in use until the machine died)
ATI Radeon 1950XT (still in use)
ATi Radeon 3870 (Still in use)
ATi Radeon 4870 (Still in use)

1. ISA card, do not remember specifics...
2. PCI card, do not remember specifics...
3. ATI Rage, do not remember the exact model, but I would guess is was either a Pro or 128 GL.
4. Voodoo 3 3000
5. GeForce2 MX (400, I think...)
6. GeForce4 Ti 4800
7. Radeon 9700 Pro
8. Radeon X800 XT
9. GeForce 8800 GTX
10. GeForce 460 GTX 1GB
11. GeForce 460 GTX 1GB SLI

It started, when I built my first own pc back in 1997. Can't remember if I had anything between the original GeForce and the GF4, but here goes:

nVidia Riva128
nVidia Riva128 + Voodoo 2
nVidia GeForce 256 DDR
nVidia GeForce 4 4600TI
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
nVidia 8600 GT
nVidia 8800GTX
ATI Radeon HD4890
nVidia GTX 570

Worst card: The Riva128 bar none! Direct3D was terrible in Unreal and OpenGL was crap in Quake II. Thus the Voodoo 2 came to the rescue with Glide.

Best card: The 9700 Pro. Man, you got so much improvement in performance, features and IQ in one upgrade. The most superb graphics card of all time. The 8800GTX was a positive surprise too.

Most meh: Well, I got the HD4890 as a stop gap when the 8800GTX crapped out, but it was very meh in comparision. The upgrade to the 8600 GT didn't make my jaws hit the floor either!

Soon to be owner of 6950 or 6970 Crossfire. I'm sure I forgot some somewhere.

My first few GPU's were always hand me downs. The first one I ever bought new was the 7800GT.
