Yonah preview at anandtech

I don't know if Intel is the King but for sure the Governor LOL! Other than that, I agree.

I don't feel sorry for any of the folks who run out and buy every new piece of Hardware as it hits the markets. My rig is 2.5 years old and the last thing I worry about is pissing contests. It's not like AMD and nVidia have been Saints. People ran out and bought all kinds of overpriced HW from ALL hardware makers. I know guys who paid almost a grand for their FX55's and one paid $1,100 for one of the first X2 just for bragging rites. Another paid almost as much for a P4EE, sheesh!

Now I know a lot of folks here thinks Ed just bashes AMD, but he nailed it again.

It has more to do with Video cards but can be applied to any piece hardware.

A 9600XT does not provide the same gaming experience as a 7800GT. Period.

However, that editorial would be more suited to CPUs.

Sure a 9600XT is not. But that wasn't my point. You know I've knocked Intel and AMD for pointing this overpriced crap at us. As if all of us are some 12 to 22 year old with parents footing the bill for whatever we like so we can front it off to our friends, phewww! WOW look, I have a Dual everything rig, Dual Dual Core Opterons with Dual 7800s with Dual 1GB memory sticks, Dual DVD-RW, Dual 500GB HDDs and hell, even Dual NICs.
But yo man, what you use your rig for?
Games!

The point was every time something new comes out, there's a part of this DIY croud that has to absolutely have it, runs out and buys it at all costs and as soon as possible. This keeps prices high and reinforces their (the whole industry) thinking that most of us are idiots and have money to burn. Like Oh god I got to have a $629 dollar video card.

That's the problem. It's not compatible with ANYONE's computers right now.

quite impressive considering its a early pre production chip... if they can improve on this more, conroe will indeed be something

i think this is pretty right on the dot of a production chip. iirc, yonah is in production now and will be launched in jan-feb

I agree! A few years ago you could buy a $40 1700+ and have the performance of amd's top end chip which cost about $350, now? ahahah. Same with intel. Prices are sky rocketing, no longer can you buy the cheapest and end up with excellent performance. Quite sad :(

Gone forever are those halycon days of the celery 300a

But... This Yonah looks really, really, really, nice. And running at a low FSB to begin with will give lots of room to overclock just buy buying faster rated ram...

You got it! Quite Sad but very true.

Well, my next rig is now finally waiting for it last parts. I should get them by Thursday next week. I thought about going Dothan but this little trick (pin change) pissed me off. I honestly don't feel it was done for technical reasons. So I ordered a Venice 3500+ and Asus A8N SLI. In about 6 to 8 months, I'll then go to something like an Sc-939 Opteron 175 or etc... If I wouldn't have bought a Guitar, I would have went Dual Core instead.

Don't be so negative. It might be possible that Asus or some other manufacturer decides to make a socket adapter with matching voltage and all that for i875 motherboards. If there's overwhelming demand for that kind of thing of course... :)

I dunno...
http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=51962
Paid $284 for that and it's the speed of an unreleased part (FX-60)

http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=46474
Paid $100 for that thing

http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=40685
$150 for that.

sabrewolf732 said:
lol how does 284, 100, and 150 = $40??

Well, $40/$350 = 11% of the cost.

$150 (OSA144) / $1100 (ADAFX57) = 13% of the cost.

So it's similar. Though a $40 CPU would be nice, I think AMD decided to make money with the round of CPU's, as opposed to the Athlon XP days.

...... that's no where near where cpu prices used to be. Even intel didn't have cpu's over $600. And your proportion doesn't make sense..... it just proves how much cpu prices have risen. + :rolleyes:Also, where can I get a 144 for $150?

I think Yonah did alright considering it was an Anandtech review. The price will be more important than any speed differences.

Supply and demand always rule over all else. About a year ago, I told you, "If the 3500+'s were priced nearer to $200 instead of $289, I'd buy one". It is, so I did. I said this even as others were calling me an Intel PR guy LOL! Then this purchase makes me a traitor uh?

I waited on Yonah and Cedar Mill, wasn't really interested in Presler. Again, the Pin Change just doesn't sit well with me, I hope I'm wrong as hell. Now, if this Pin Change was to Sc-775 and made it compat with i945, i955, i965(?) and i975 I would have scrapped the Athlon64 Pruchase I just made. None of these companies are Loyal to me, so I'm not loyal to them either. I needed this PC about 3 months ago, I'm pissed I waited.

I'm glad I waited on X-Fi. All 4 of my buds, near where I live, who bought HDA have sold them and replaced them with X-Fi's. Many have replaced A64s with X2's or Opterons and that's what I'll do next year.

Eclipse and I both got it for around $150. Vandi sold them for $150 plus shipping, and I believe tankguys sells them for around that, but they're constantly sold out due to their popularity.

It does make sense, at least to me, since you're still able to overclock a part to be on par with a part that's 10x its price.

And the cpu you get now for $150 is much better than the crap they sold for $40. It's faster, cooler, and does more. Like I said before, AMD wants to make a profit this time around. Besides, they're merely charging what the market can bear, which just makes sense to do. They need to compete with Intel, afterall.

You can get a 2500+ sempron on 754 and get it to around 2.4ghz, and the chip will cost you $60 and support 64bit. The options are still there if you know how to look.

so, so true.... I'm definately going the value/trailing edge route from now on.... why spend 3-5x more, when 80% of the performance can be had for so little?

So true. I always look at price/performance and right now it seems like AMD is winning that battle, but when Intel starts winning that battle, I'm back over there. And I'm not even an Intel PR guy like Donnie27 ;).

Why be loyal to a company that has no loyalty to you. Get the best CPU you can get for your money and needs...whoever makes it.

Hehehehe! AMD is in no battle with Intel. Intel is a whole system supplier while AMD is a parts supplier. I'm lucky enough to have multiple computers and don't need to the absolute best for that reason. I like my old Intel Rig and will hang on to it.

Why be loyal? I don't know, I've asked folks that for years. I also looked at Dothan for a Gamer Rig and it was my first choice.

Wait. About the compatibility about Yonah with 875 mobos. Since the Yonah actually is compatible PHYSICALLY with the mobo. I was thinking maybe the mobo manufacturers would do a simple bios update to make it compatible.

Yes, then there's Asus and the CT479 that's not compat with these. They're rendered useless for the new procs by Intel. That's sucks IMHO! Intel use to do this ONLY when they had no choice are a very good reason why! Now, be it rushed and not very well thought out plans or just plain greed, it sucks. I don't mean it just for this issue, but the others added to it. 3 i925s and still needing i945/55 then quickly dumpping them before i975. I already heard rumors on i990 and i995 sheesh!

Don't get me wrong here, I don't hate Intel or planned what I said as a bash or flame towards them. I just try to call em' as I see em'.

Intel isn't catering to us, they're catering to an OEM market. Most people buy a computer and then use it for several years before buying another. If they upgrade something, it might be a DVD burner, hard drive, maybe RAM, but rarely a processor. And then you have inexperienced guys running around pretending to be OEMs who would bend all the pins trying to get a s939 processor to fit into a s478. And then you have downright dishonest OEMs who would sell overclocked chips if it was as easy as changing an unlocked multiplier.

Now at the moment Intel may not be in the favor of enthusiasts when it comes to their hot and slow processors, but nobody can successfully accuse them of selling unreliable products. Prescotts may not be the coolest or the fastest, but they work. On the other side of the fence you have AMD, who have promised support for X2s on motherboards manufactured years earlier with just a BIOS upgrade. Then, you have users here running into a myriad of memory compatibility problems and coming here for help. My theroy is that, rather than having to support unforseen combinations and unforseen problems, Intel is changing the chipsets frequently to ensure for a stable experience. Sure, the new Yonah might work in an old motherboard, but would it be entirely stable? Would it work with all of the older memories, both DDR and DDR2?

To me it's a lot like how Apple will only allow OSX on Apple-built boxes after the release of OSX-X86. There are just so many hardware combinations out there that Apple would have to support that they'd rather provide a great experience on that limited hardware set than an OK experience on universal hardware. That and they make a pretty penny from selling hardware, too.

I would hope it's faster, cooler and perform better being that all these years have passed. It's proves that price has increased at an insane rate. The $40 tbred b has gone to a $150 opteron, the $350 2800+ has gone to a $1000 fx57. A a sempron? It's extremely hard to get a sempron to fx57 performance levels. Same thing is happening with video card, before the top of the line video card cose $299 (ti4600). For $200 you could get almost all the performance of a ti4600. 2/3 of the price. the 7800gt is 3/4 of the 7800gtx price, hell the gtx 512 is $700

Sounds like biased fan stuff to me! You're telling me all Intel Processors are hot and slow? I'd not be surprised reading this on the AMD side of the forum but here? AMD and Intel only see SUCKERS when folks run out and buy P4EE AND Athlon64 FX. Look at the frackin' prices? Name some of the stuff after a Gamer and then stick a nice fat price on it as well. They all do it.

So you don't remember the most expensive model meant for this market then uh? Drumroll please. The $1,399 1GHz Athlon classic topped them all in the last 8 years. While Intel couldn't fill the orders for 1GHz Cumine, AMD sold the 1GHz Classic and the new 1GHz TBird for $1,200 to $1,399. These stayed over 1K until Intel fully RAMPPED up the CuMine that sold for $1,100 to $1,250. Yes, the AMD processors sold more more on average hehehe! These stayed right at one thousand as the 1133MHz was recalled. Only glut and the Processor market stall (some call it a crash) saw all processors price fall. Athlons 700's cost as much as $1,000 when they launched as well. Sure there were $1,000 Pentiums. But to try and single out only Intel is the act of an AMD Fan. Those were the times when almost everyone's hardware costed more=P AMD and Intel have RAPPED the consumers every chance they're given.
