I dunno, seeing how it runs even with an X2 3800+, and consumes less power at 100% load than the X2 at idle, seems pretty impressive to me. What's more important is that the mobo companies are coming out with desktop solutions for mobile cpu's, according to the beginning of the article.

ahhh, true, more desktop MBs means way more enthusiast joy....

I wonder if we'll see a new interim EE chip based on this thing before Conroe is out?

edit: I wasn't as impressed because of the drop in IPC (50% higher L2 latency... scares me) I guess intel has good reason for that tho, the power saving is worth it

edit(again): Woohoo!! I'm [H]Lite now! No more n00bie status for me now! To celebrate, i'm finally gonna buy 1gb of PC-4000 memory for my PresHott (the single stick 512mb DDR266 was just shameful)
 
im impressed with it, although its more of a "meeting expectations" impress than a "wow" impress

defiantly looking forward to upgrading to this from a 1.2ghz mobile p3-m...
 
I'm impressed as well. Compared to X2's the chip holds it's ground VERY well....
But please, for the love of Batman, overclock the damn thing and show me the benchmarks then!!!!! :eek:

That's 40%, not 50% and that 10% difference is very important. Going from 10 to 14 cycles isn't going to kill or hurt it.

Donnie, that's part of the reason that we run Premiere Elements along with the WorldBench scores that use Premiere 6.5 in our systems evaluations.

The performance numbers are much closer when you look at Intel on Elements, with the P4 with hyperthreading looking pretty rosy.

Anyways, nice chip, I'll be looking forward to a replacement of my 700m with something Yonah equipped...

id say the same reason they changed hte pinout going from coppermine to tualatin, the chip has different leads and older chipsets, which do not have dual core logic (i855 and i915 both do NOT support DC) will not support them.

with tualatin, it was lower voltage signaling that the older chipsets could not handle. with yonah, its a whole extra core, along with a lot of other changes.
 
I was like dude! Raise the FSB or find a way to give the CPU more bandwith! I heard that Merom will only have a 667 MHz FSB. Is that true? If it is, Intel is in deep trouble; the Turon (D/C) will have a 2nd memory channel to help boost performance. I would think that with Merom being a lot more efficient then the Dothan series, it would enjoy more bandwith.

while that is true, i was comparing it more to dothan than i was to anything netburst, i expected Yonah to be a dothan with a lot of tweakage and some pretty competitive performance. 'course, it is pretty damn impressive that a mobile chip is keeping up with my X2 considering the power requirements of yonah/manchester. all in all, i cant wait to get one :D

now all we need is for the i945m to support 800fsb, so when 800fsb yonah (or merom, its pin compatable... and merom is currently working on i945m test boards) comes out, we can mod our 667fsb yonah chips to 800 :p
 
Disappointed that the power draw is not lower than Dothan. :( Makes for a perfect timing though, now I can get my beloved Pentium M 1.2 GHz ULV notebook without any regrets. :D
 
Looks like a real winner for Intel. It's the same clockspeed as the X2 3800+ and manages to do relatively well against it. More than can be said for the Prescott stuff :p

I can't wait to see what Conroe will be capable of, if Yonah can do this.

Yes that's a good point. MaximumPC and others use PP-7 and it contradicts what a lot of folks think they know. Sure 6.5 is part of WB and that's fine, but maybe they should stop making blanket statements as if Elements and the almost year old PP7 isn't on the market. They don't test Games without patches. A quick trip to MaximumPC will show why they don't use it. A 3GHz P4 runs that apps as fast a AthlonFX 55.

I linked to a Site showing the difference an Intel patch made for L.A.M.E. I linked to here, and most folks said sweet and or WOW! Some guy did the same at Anandtech forums and got flamed.

I like the way you guys test more than one version of DivX. I think folks smart enough to build their own computers are smart enough to use the correct optimized software. New users do use MS stuff and that includes Movie Maker, WMP-10, WinZip and etc.....Yet, it is NOT enough to test hardware and not comment or even hide Optimized Intel software.

Neither does all 3 of the i925s.

Oh, I know exactly why Dual Core doesn't work on everything older that i945. The i945/955 and newer has a Arbitration Logic built into the Northbridge, the others don't. Yonah's is said to be built into the Processor so it shouldn't be needed. Now I could be wrong as hell. The clue I looked for was shared L2 and if the Execution Cores snoopped eachother. It is NOTHING like the two processor on one package Presler or the tied together Smithfield that need this Ar chip. Presler probaly needs it as well.

Now, if they're talking about Conroe shipping with S-775, it seems like, Yonah should have moved to it or at least the old Sc-478. Yes, if i875 can run two Xeons, it sure as hell should be able to run a dual Core Yonah. Again though, I could be wrong as hell. If I'm NOT then this sucks!

still, why would you want an older chipset with a new chip like this? you (may) forget that Yonah's stock FSB is 667, and i915m doesnt support that - Intel has also stated that the reason for hte lower battery life on the Sonoma platform is due to the higher power-consuming chipset, which the new Napa platform is going to solve, iirc, they claimed a major power cut on the chipset front.

i dont know why they did this, but im sure htey had a good reason for it... if anything that this chip just plain does not run reliably on the older chipsets and intel did not want OEM's putting them in systems together.

that same logic could be applied to i875 support the Pentium D's. the i915/i925 did not have arbitration logic at all, as far as i know. the i875's just plain did not have a new enough arbitration logic to support the D's, so why the hell should it support something even newer like yonah?

considering the i855, and i915 are on a mobile platform, there no is absolutly no reason for them to have arbitration logic built into them to support multiple processors, as it was not possible until now.

Hey, maybe you're right. It just seems like builtin obsolescence to me. But this is still Sc-479 but changed so old Sc-479 doesn't work. If this were a New socket, let's say Sc-700 for example with Notebook and Desktop boards, hell I'd cheer!

I remember reading somewhere than Intel put some of the old stuff back into production. i915 can support everything from 400 to 1066MHz if Intel wants it too. It's just a matter of sockets and clock gens. Even the official specs says 400/800 but that's to save 1066 for i925s. It is also compatible with DDR1 or 2 as well all P4s. I don't mean just Sc-478 but Sc-775 as well. FSB ratios solve ANY FSB otherwise. 4:5 or 667-800 or 5:4 667-400. Hell even a Single channel of DDR2 at 667 would do the trick.

I think it offers outstanding performance espically for notebooks.

Much more power under the hood and it will be thinner, cooler, and we will have more battery life.

its good to me.

The problem with the Pentium M architecture has been that...it has lagged behind the Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 when it comes to FP intensive applications such as...3D gaming.

Umm, according to the gaming benchmarks I've seen the Dothan equals or slightly beats an equally clocked Athlon FX and stomps any P4 EE.

In workstation apps, the Dothan tended to lag a bit b/c of it's FPU...but in gaming it did do well.

really now? i know that i865 and i875 have arbitration logic in them for support of the xeons, but last i checked, when a Pentium D was put in one of those boards (say, the DFI 875p-T) the board would boot but only one core was functional.

linkage to said board and its compatability with the D?
 
The 875p supposedly could do it, but it was never really successfully modded. DFI tried, and if they failed, it can't be done. They have the finest tweaked bios/chipset crew in the market at this moment.

No it doesn't=P Xeons has some of this built-in, Smithfield DOES'T. Smithy is two Prescotts, NOT two Xeons. There are Dual Processor enabled i875S but they have a different Arbitration Logic Chip. Intel made sure there'd be no cheap Dual Sc-478 i875's, VIA tried and failed, if the rumors are correct so did SIS.

So if Asrock of anyone else could go back add this, that's one thing. Saying it's part of the chipset and should work on others, I'm not sure.

While that may be true, there's no ETA on them AFAIK, and by the time they come out it'll be a good 3 months from now at least, plus give or take a month or two for notebook manufacturers to incorporate it in their product lines, and add another month or so for actual availability...hell, we'll be looking at a 6-7 month timeframe at the earliest. :( I can't wait that long... :eek:
 
I wonder how well these chips can overclock? I may end up skipping Yonah and jumping on Conroe when its released.

That's what I'm looking to. I'm pretty damned sure with the Yonah OCed it will spank the crap out of everything (except probably insanely clocked X2s). Especially being an opposite of a power hungry beast (Preshott), it should be able to clock far without any too far reaching power/heat ramifications.

I've never seen a Dothan overclock as high as an FX can clock though. Kind of like the old Athlon (more work per clock) vs. P4 argument (raw clock speed)...just in reverse this time :).

i think i might build one of these to use until conroe comes out, seems like a better deal then a Pentium D for a gamer like me. (M2 isnt out till spring i hear). Only question i have is this:

Ive built a few computers before but one thing is confusing me with this new DDR2 ram. Yonah has a 667 FSB, what speed of DDR2 should i buy for it? I see PC2-5300 and 5400 runs at 667? This DDR2 memory is really confusing me..im out of date on memory stuff. :confused:

By the time 64 bit is mainstream, Intel will have Merom on the barbeque. Meanwhile Yonah (32 bit) can benefit from lower power consumption (in comparison to if it was a 64 bit CPU).

Intel is the king of built-in obsolescence. They couldn't make as much money if they weren't. We've seen so many disposable chipsets and motherboards from them in the past two years, you know? I feel bad for their customer's having to run the upgrade treadmill.

I don't know if Intel is the King but for sure the Governor LOL! Other than that, I agree.

I don't feel sorry for any of the folks who run out and buy every new piece of Hardware as it hits the markets. My rig is 2.5 years old and the last thing I worry about is pissing contests. It's not like AMD and nVidia have been Saints. People ran out and bought all kinds of overpriced HW from ALL hardware makers. I know guys who paid almost a grand for their FX55's and one paid $1,100 for one of the first X2 just for bragging rites. Another paid almost as much for a P4EE, sheesh!

Now I know a lot of folks here thinks Ed just bashes AMD, but he nailed it again.

Please note that I said Asrock's "add/ing support" is NOT the same as Built-in Chipset support. I875 supports Dual Xeons, this support is not added on or Jerry-Rigged.

I saw that at the INQ too. There's not a real reason for i8xx to not support not only 8x0D but also SATA-II, ICH-7, 8GB of memory (more than AMD's 4GB) and every damned thing else. But these have to be added, the support is NOT there already as was implied.
