edit: I wasn't as impressed because of the drop in IPC (50% higher L2 latency... scares me) I guess intel has good reason for that tho, the power saving is worth it

while that is true, i was comparing it more to dothan than i was to anything netburst, i expected Yonah to be a dothan with a lot of tweakage and some pretty competitive performance. The performance numbers are much closer when you look at Intel on Elements, with the P4 with hyperthreading looking pretty rosy.

with tualatin, it was lower voltage signaling that the older chipsets could not handle. with yonah, its a whole extra core, along with a lot of other changes.

that same logic could be applied to i875 support the Pentium D's. the i915/i925 did not have arbitration logic at all, as far as i know. the i875's just plain did not have a new enough arbitration logic to support the D's, so why the hell should it support something even newer like yonah?Yes, if i875 can run two Xeons, it sure as hell should be able to run a dual Core Yonah.

still, why would you want an older chipset with a new chip like this? you (may) forget that Yonah's stock FSB is 667, and i915m doesnt support that - Intel has also stated that the reason for hte lower battery life on the Sonoma platform is due to the higher power-consuming chipset, which the new Napa platform is going to solve, iirc, they claimed a major power cut on the chipset front.
i dont know why they did this, but im sure htey had a good reason for it... if anything that this chip just plain does not run reliably on the older chipsets and intel did not want OEM's putting them in systems together.
The problem with the Pentium M architecture has been that...it has lagged behind the Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 when it comes to FP intensive applications such as...3D gaming.

Umm, according to the gaming benchmarks I've seen the Dothan equals or slightly beats an equally clocked Athlon FX and stomps any P4 EE.

While that may be true, there's no ETA on them AFAIK, and by the time they come out it'll be a good 3 months from now at least, plus give or take a month or two for notebook manufacturers to incorporate it in their product lines, and add another month or so for actual availability...hell, we'll be looking at a 6-7 month timeframe at the earliest.lithium726 said:im pretty sure the ULV single core yonah will spank the dothan's ass...

So if Asrock of anyone else could go back add this, that's one thing. Saying it's part of the chipset and should work on others, I'm not sure.

EDIT: also, the INQ talked about Intel restarting the 8xx series of chipsets for dual core. And a few wikky sites note that the 8xx series chipset motherboards need just a bios upgrade.
