What would be the good replacement for a Ati Radeon X600 Low profile? Its an old pc I'd like to give to my parents and they have the nieces and nephew around that play games on it.
 
It has a 275W PSU, and a Pentium D, right? I wouldn't recommend pushing it too far... but the max I'd dare recommend is a HD5570, which draws 25W in real world power consumption, according to xbitlabs (which have the best way of measuring a GPU's power consumption, IMO).
 
Yeah you are on the mark spec wise but I didnt expect to supe up everything like I would a regular PC. Just want something to run the newer games with lo to mid quality if possible. also does the HD5570 come in low profile versions? Maybe I should just move the mobo to a new case?

Nevermind. Maybe I'll just sell it instead.

Yes the HD5570 is low-profile ready and is the best retail low-profile card out there.

Nice. I think Ill pick this up and turn my dell into a project machine. Just need the 4gb of ram now.
 
Theirs a lot of cards out thier that are low profile and are green video cards so to speak meaning they Dont use a lot of watts .Just get your hands on something newer and it should be all good .
ATI x600 still not a bad card btw for a older computer.
 
Yeah but its not really designed for gaming. really more for watching HD videos and the like.
 
Sadly that card has 2 gigs ram on it on a 128bit bus with memory speed at 1000mgz {slow} memory timing are probably dog slow on a card like that too but they never really talk about that . imho less ram at a faster speed grade is the way to go.No way a card that slow can use that much texture ram not in gaming anyways.

Since both the HD5570 and the GT430 have about the same amount of power consumption, and the GT430 is only a hair slower than the HD5570

any GPU choice is fine. Whatever fits your specs should work. The HIS HD5570 has a little bump on top of the HS area that may impact the card's ability to fit in your case.

The MSI GT430 is an used card (or simply returned new in box, up to chance), that, after shipping, costs the same as the new Sapphire HD5570 listed earlier in this thread.
 
Agreed they are more or less the same if they are useing the same memeory bus bit width and ram speed

but in that review you linked to the 5570 has 2000mgz ram and the 430gt has 1800mgz ram .

Chop the ram bandwidth by 50% and watch your fps do about the same :D

HIS reports only their base clock, not the effective clock, blame NewEgg for the incorrect listing. Look at their other cards. A HD5870 with only 1200MHz clock? Naww.... MSI lists the "effective clock," while HIS lists the base clock. Newegg reports all of them as "effective clock"

The HD5570's a fair bit faster than the GT430 (30% by my estimation). Once again a techpowerup chart that's completely useless has been posted.
Also, the 5570's power consumption is considerably lower than the GT430 as well, as the GT430 has a 60W TDP, versus the 39W of the HD5570.

Don't know what benchmarks you've bin looking at samuelmorris .From what i can tell after looking at a pile of different benchmarks from different sites its the same old same old from what i can tell ,their even, though the lower watts use on the ATI is nice, i like that part seeing as it should keep the card cooler.

And agreed jeremyshaw looks like neweggs numbers are all bogus,guess one should all ways double check before buying from that place with extra sources to make should the numbers add up .My self i never buy from newegg, i just find its a decent place to do price checks on pc hardware:)

Found a funny benchmark for the MSI N430GT MD1GD3/OC/LP as well, and the ram should be 2200MHz gddr5. Guess the one one newegg is slower at 2000mgz gddr5 or something.*srugs*

PAP is "protected audio path". the ati card can bitstream HD audio(Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master).

Its just hardware DRM from what i can tell and ill take a big pass on that like i all ways do, as well i don't need my video card to act as a sound card, i have a sound card for a reason even if it means using more wiring to set it up and what not with a full size audio amp and full size speakers .
And if and when need if i can ill download a patch to fix DRM problems ;)

One things for shore, it seems the ATI 5770 douse better in Direct3D11 api then the gt430 .
The gt430 really doesn't seem to like battlefield bc2 or something when run in Direct3D11.
ATI HD5770 douse seem to take the lead and the only thing that could save the gt430 at this point would be how much it costs .

imho at the end of the day its all apples vs oranges and the only thing that really maters when looking for a new video card is

"A" how much douse it cost
"B" are their known issues with the thing
"C" how much pixel crunching power do i get for "X" amount of money.

The HD5770 is triple the performance of a GT430, so I'm not surprised! It's twice the power consumption and more than twice the price. They're not remotely comparable.

Pci-e 16x only supports 75watts max btw people, after that the card needs a external power source.

after looking at some benchmarks ya that one seems to have a bit of a ege vs the 5570 , not much mind you and the 5670 seems to have a bit of a ege vs the gt430 unless were talking D3d11 then the gt430 falls flat on its face. ^^

gt430 though costs less $53 and has 2000mgz gddr5 ram vs the 1000mgz ram on the 5670.faster ram douse have its uses if you know how to tweak your game settings, for people that don't well you know.
and its not like anyone going to be running D3D11 anyways on a p4d cpu ^^ what would be the point the fps would suck so bad its not funny over all though kind of have to give ati the win for their video card line up so far.

My self though iv all ways liked the other camp better, i don't like ATI drivers\problems and the tweaking apps that are out their for the cards in question but that's just me.
Geforce 400 cards as well seem to be having problems with openGL, don't know 100% what that's all about but i think my self ill wait for the 500 lineup before changing cards most likely next fall.

Ps i all ways try and look at both camps objectively and keep an open mind even if in a way im kinda a nvidia fan boy.Imho they overclock and pimp better, ati gotten on my bad side once too often on that topic. ^_^
 
War_Zone: Bear in mind that those are AC draw figures. To work out the actual draw of the GPU you need to find the efficiency of the PSU and multiply by that. Since the PSU is not stated in the GT430 link we'll have to take a conservative guess at 80% efficiency, which means it's using 26W more when folding than at idle. Assuming an idle figure of about 20W for the GT430, that means 46W full load.
The HD5570 full stress is 38W. Amusingly Guru3D are the only review site that refuse to state which PSU they use, we'll assume a conservative 80% here too, which means an idle-load difference of 32W. Given the 5570 has a stated load TDP of 10W, this means we're looking at 42W full load, and I'm not convinced folding uses as much power as games load on graphics cards.

That makes it a hole lot harder to really get the real numbers on the watt topic for a video card.

Ya that makes sense so one would have to at this point do a full load test of the computer in question with say a 1 meg pci video card then add in the real video card to test {5570 or gt430} get some numbers watt wise off the power draw from the wall then take the difference in watts -20% in order to have a better ballpark number of whats going on the watts topic of video card "X" vs "Y".
Numbers would never be bang on, to get em 100% bang on would mean dedicated hardware to do the job or something.

But i hear you, i know were your going with this.
if a psu is 80% efficient at converting power from 120v ac to {12\5\3.3v dc} then that means its pulling in +20% from the wall for whatever its feeding to the computer.

Exactly, and PSUs vary quite considerably between tests. Several sites still use old PCP&C units which are only 81% efficient, yet others use units like the Corsair AX 1200W, which are 89% efficient (both on US voltage). Then there's US (110V mains) versus UK (230V mains) which also increases the efficiency of a PSU by up to 3, sometimes even 4%. 4% efficiency can be a good 15W difference to the readout of some graphics cards.
 
In that case the psu has to be tested first on the efficiency topic before hand and whatever the numbers are on this topic it needs to be added to the math mix so as to have as close a ballpark number as possible in order to answer the question of how many watts douse video card "X" use.
