Want an Xbox 360 with HDMI out? Looks like you may have to buy a new one:
http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=8301

If that's to be believed (this site doesn't usually post BS like the inquirer), Microsoft may be upgrading the video output of the X360 by either a third tier of system, adding the port to the premium, or just replacing the systems that are currently on the shelves later this year. This will give the X360 the future-proofing and necessary output format to properly use the HD video formats, of course, assuming that this is an HDMI 1.3 port like the PS3.

While this will anger many of the cutting edge early adopters with good home theatres that only have systems capable of analog output (all currently manufactured systems are not capable of digital video output), I'd say this is a direct response to Sony having 1 system with HDMI and one without.

That is, if it is true. The picture could be a test model of something, or it could be nothing at all - take it for what it is - a rumour.

bah they'll probably release a new sku with the hd-dvd and hdmi built in :(

oh wait a sec, i don't care. vga adapter works just dandy :p

Those images floating around are more or less unconfirmed, and just rumors at this point in time. However, I think most of us saw this coming around. It's really just a matter of time till Microsoft releases something with an HDMI port. Honestly, I don't think this is much of an issue, as i'm getting great high definition visuals through the component cables, and my surround sound reciever only has an optical and coaxial digital input anyway. It's only natural for a company to revise their products in order to maintain their competitiveness. Perhaps Microsoft will now have a model with HDMI, and one without in the future? I can see them doing that with the core and premium packages that currently exist.

hmmm, I have a feeling my 360 might go belly up a month or so after this is released....

If this is true I would say it almost confirms the Internal HD-dvd rumor. I don't believe it's so though because it would piss off way to many people. Also it would make Microsoft seem like a copy cat of Sony which wouldn't be good PR. Also will it be HDMI 1.3? Sony is saying they will have the first device with such technology so do you think these will come out after Christmas? If so then what's the point you lost a good amount of time to sell and people will forget about the hdmi thing by christmas 2007.So then maybe they will have 1.2 on there which would then give sony a slight edge because they are using a much better technology. I would say it would be a ballsy move on Microsoft to do this and I don't think right now they have the balls. Maybe after Gates leaves but for sure not right now.

Bill Gates isn't in charge of the Xbox team, so he would have little if any effect wether he stays or leaves.

Honestly, the difference in HDMI vs Component quality doesn't quantify MS to make it an option in the future, especially considering how few TV's support 1080P. Xbox360's hardware was never intended to run that mode in games either way. Many would argue 720p is just as good, as I can see little difference between that and 1080i on my new Samsung slimfit

I could see them placing it in the consoles with the core shrink.

Doesn't matter to me anyway. My 6 year old Sony HDTV doesn't have any of those fancy Digital connections.

Again, another reason. Only recent model TV's have HDMI' inputs. My Samsung has 2 though I honestly doubt i'll ever use more then one. The market just isn't there yet.

Bill Gates is in charge of Microsoft which is in charge of xbox team. It's his money they are messing with so he has the final word on something as dramatic like this. Hell Mtv had a special about the road for Gears of War to e3 last May and near the end it showed Bill Gates asking Cliffy B (although it seemed more like a altimatum) if Gears of War will be release in Fall. It's his product so he runs the ship and tries his best to maintain a tight schedule on game releases in better hope of keeping sales up.

It's really not that dramatic. I wouldn't expect this decision to get any further than the head of the MS home & entertainment division.

If Microsoft ever did relent and provide an Xbox with HD-DVD built in, they'd probably just kill the core system, knock $100 off the premium version and make the HD-DVD the "super-premium version" (there's no way they'd manufacture 3 versions of the console). Really, it shouldn't make Xbox 360 early adopters any angrier than a price drop by itself - it's not like people with 360s didn't know what they were getting and that there would be future revisions of the box.

As for HDMI, it's not yet a necessity even with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (though I personally wouldn't buy a player without it because I don't trust the companies to maintain their ICT moratorium), but it's inevitable that the 360 will at some point have that port. Microsoft has to make an effort to stay feature-comparable with the PS3 and adding HDMI would be a fairly cheap way to aid in that effort.

Considering there wasn't a single revision of the original XBOX, I have a hard time believing this.

again HDMI only adds audio on the cable and encyrption besides that nothing component cant do.

There are significant differences between the two consoles in this regard. For one thing, as I understand it, Microsoft obtained full rights to all the Xbox 360 internals. This means that they don't have to fight with IBM or ATI when they want to make changes. There is also the fact that the Xbox was never going to make a profit, MS knew it, and they weren't going to throw any more development money at it. The Xbox was a quick, down-and-dirty slap-together of components, green-lighted so that Microsoft could get its foot in the console-gaming door. Because they have "bigger plans" for the Xbox 360, they're less likely to be shy about making changes to the box if they think the changes are necessary.

1080p, I mean component can do 1080p but cables capapble of it will only cause thoasands of ttech support calls

Shouldn't really affect the 360 then should it. :D

I doubt they would release another version, I could see a lawsuit if they did. Some sort of bait and switch, first they say no plans for a Hdmi port or internal HD-dvd, and then they release one, so people buy a 360 and then have to buy another because they were told that a new one wasn't coming out and then it did. Seems like a big lawsuit to me if it did happen.

Doubtful, they will likely introduce it as a third SKU and drop the core, price drop the premium to $300-350 and sell the HD-DVD version for $450+

If you guys dislike it, if you kept your premium box simply return it to walmart for full refund, I do not see the problem....they don't ask for receipts

Well, the difference is HDMI gives you full digital video, which does give you a sharper image than analog outputs (like component or composite connections). Anyone who has tried DVI on a PC monitor can tell you about the difference a digital connection makes.

yeah, I can tell you from experience that it makes a very small, almost negligible difference. DVI is digital, RGB is analog, but they both look pretty much the same on my Dell 2407. For an HDTV with relatively inferior resolution, the difference in quality should be nill (assuming the same quality inputs and decoding). HDMI will add nothing to your viewing experience that you can't already get with component, it will just support more TV inputs and compete with Sony a bit more.

Your screen is only 24 inches, however.

Yeah, HDMI will also be adding the ability to play HD movies in HD a few years from now when copy protection is enforced. With component on the HD drives, you may as well be watching DVDs.

What does that have to do with anything? My HDTV maxes out at 1080i, which is inferior to the 1920x1200 ( > 1080p ) the 2407 does. If there's no discernable difference between analog and digital at 1080p, there's not gonna be one at lower resolutions for sure.

Supposedly they aren't implementing the copy protection until 2011. I doubt we'll still be gaming on Xbox 360s by then.

Hey, congradulations on your new HDTV! I guess you finally settled for the Samsung. I also see you decided to take the plunge and get an X360 as well. Life must be pretty good right now :)

As for a possible lawsuit, that would be without merit as Microsoft has the right to revise their product however they see fit. As someone earlier said, all they would need to do is drop a sku or two, and add a 3rd sku with the HDMI port. I also don't see them adding in an internal HD-DVD drive as they seem pretty set on an external unit only. That's the way it should be as it will not force consumers to pay for something they don't want(ie the PS3 strategy). I just wish Microsoft would hurry up and release details on this add-on drive, and how it will work for current X360 owners.

QFT. Heck, Microsoft could release a newer Xbox 360 with a heavily improved graphics processor and discontinue support of the old Xbox 360s and any lawsuit still wouldn't have merit.

is this what america has become lawsuits. plz should i sue old navy cause they came out with a new shirt thats better then my last one i bought?

yes i shop at old navy.

I think what he ment was it's common knowledge that 1080p real advantage dosn't really take full effect until you hit 36in screens which means you will be able to see how tight the pixels are while on a smaller screen they arn't easy to see.

Yep, you set the universal constant on picture quality.

And you're going to trust rumours in the industry? Over the prospect of a digital copy protection that defined the reason for the push to optical-based HD movies in the first place?

Do the XBOX 360's outputs even support HDCP and other copy protection schemes?

The current models are analog only. I'd assume that if they're going to invest in the necessary licensing fees per console and the actual cost of putting the digital video hardware on the console, they're doing it for HD movies... which means HDCP complience to the tee. Depending (IF in the first place) when this version of the console is released, it will either be 1.2 spec HDMI or the more likely 1.3 to match the PS3.

I see this playing out if Microsoft decides to do a redesigned Xbox360 (ala the old PS2 --> slimline PS2 change). It would make a good sales pitch if it was advertised as a full blown media center device.

(This is just rumor, speculation, etc.)

Don't worry about it; he's just frustrated because he's having to make such a stretch to slam Microsoft.

Yes, it's gotten to be such a problem that nearly every company out there actually maintains a budget just for legal matters. How about that black guy who I think lives in Oregon. I think his name is Allen Packard or something like that, and he's sueing Nike and Michael Jordan for defamation just because he happens to look like a 6 inch shorter version of the real Jordon. He's sueing for like 482 million dollars. America has become the land of frivilous lawsuits indeed.

As someone said, Microsoft has the right to do what they please, but that won't stop a bunch of a-hole attorneys into trying tin incite a lawsuit. Luckily for Microsoft, should something like that come around, they have more than enough resources to defend themselves.

+1, It would be nice and steal more PS3 Thunder.

Here is your answer right from the cat's mouth:
Sony said:
High quality HD images can be enjoyed equally with the 20GB HDD product via the AV multi port (1080p output is also possible with the TV equipped with the D5 input). Analog output from BD will be supported until 2011 and all software published until they can be enjoyed. Standardization of visual image output via home network (e.g. DLNA) is also currently under way.
If this is a rumor, blame Steve for posting it on the [H]ard|OCP front page. Thanks for playing. Bye.
