X-fi Vista Fix

You just don't get it. If you dropped the attitude, and really thought about what myself and others were saying, you'd maybe (hopefully) start to get it. No one is defending Creative. No one. What we are doing, is explaining, in detail, to you, what is to be expected during the beta testing periods of an operating system. You have unrealistic goals of what these companies should owe you for an unsupported operating system. You continue to miss the point of everyone's comments, and you continue to do nothing but flame and cop an attitude. The entire point of the testing period is for hardware and software companies and developers to test out their products with the beta OS for one simple reason...TO BE READY FOR IT'S RELEASE. What is so hard about that concept? Tell me, please, because I'd like to know.

You continue to twist this around and make it sound like I am defending Creative. No where, am I defending them, so if anyone needs o remove their head from their ass, I'd say it's the only person who can't understand what everyone else is telling them. As others have mentioned, if you do not like how the beta test periods are run, don't participate. You clearly aren't in an IT management or decision making position, so why bother even using a beta OS? If you were in a position like that, you'd clearly understand that this is to be expected during a pre-release term. It happen with 2000, it happened with XP, and it's happening again with Vista. If you don't like how this works, don't play along. Go back to XP and what for final drivers. Have you called Creative to complain? Have you left messages on their support site asking about Vista drivers? I doubt it, because it's easier for you to come here, piss everyone off, and be ignorant.

I have nothing else to say, and based on the feedback I'm getting directly, neither does anyone else regarding your viewpoints. You are either unwilling or incapable of understanding how this beta process works. You're expectations are unreasonable. If you aren't happy with the speed of the Creative driver releases, you need to direct your comments to them, or choose another sound card. You paid for a piece of hardware and support that covers supported operating systems. That's how it works. Until Vista is released, it's considered unsupported. You choose not to understand this for whatever reason, and so be it. We've said our pieces and we've tried to explain what is realistic right now and what is not. You can either continue the flaming (and continue being reported, I'm sure) or you can calmly go back and read through what myself and others have posted. Then, take some time to read through some of the other Vista threads to see how many drivers and software apps aren't working at the present time. I'm done with you and trying to explain things to you. It's up to the mods now, how they want to handle your attitude.

ClutchS, why do you keep flaming people that are just trying to help you? Your posts have been reported. Bye now.

I'm going to go ahead and leave the thread open if anyone can update on Creative releasing Vista drivers.

Until then, don't complain about your old hardware not working with a new BETA OS.
You may not want to hear it, you may not like it and you may want to have the world spoonfed to you, but no company OWES you working drivers for a beta OS that hasn't been released yet. I am sure that when Creative has Vista drivers ready for release, you'll see them released. Besides, if they released thir beta drivers, you'd only complain that they were missing features, didn't work properly, maybe insulted your mom, whatever.

If you continue be childish about the whole thing I'll just close the thread, then you can PM me about how horrible I am.

LOL.. you are hilarious.. Are you drunk? An articulate fool, how rare. Where did I say they had no drivers? The drivers they released do not work and they are from the first build way back when, read more and show your ass less. Grow up!
p.s. you had to google that? Did it not occur to you to simply look at creative? LOL

No one wants to hear a noobie run off at the mouth.

Secondly, Vista isn't done yet. Creative Labs isn't required to have perfect drivers yet. By the way, they do have drivers on their website and though they are usually running behind on staying with current builds of Vista, they are available and there are tons of threads in forums all over the net giving workarounds to most of the problems. I have tried them on my card dozens of times with various versions of Vista. I can't get them to work at all. The reason I won't cry about it is because the OS and the drivers aren't finalized or finished yet. I don't expect them to be.

Now, you do have a point though you have tried to drive it home in an inappropriate manner. Creative Labs is bad about taking care of driver issues. Their support is fairly bad and due to their almost complete monopoly in the aftermarket sound card arena, no one can challenge them to improve. They are pretty much stagnant about their drivers and even their products to a degree.

They need to be as vigilant and and release updates on a similar schedule to ATi and nVidia's. They release new drivers regularly and have new betas available all the time for people having issues. Creative could really learn a thing or two about drivers from the video card industry.

It seems every two years I run into some driver problem that hasn't been or won't get addressed in a timely manner, and I end up purchasing the latest and greatest Creative Labs sound card, because its "new" drivers don't have the same issues that I had with the older card. This has been this way for me since the original Sound Blaster Live! card days.

For the OP :

Try getting OS support for a Lexmark product. For any OS.

Edit : I have to tell why I said that. I called up checking on beta drivers for a printer at one point. They took all my info and gave me a ticket number. Then they sent me another printer...problem still isn't solved.

Well that is because Lexmark sucks. But your point is well taken. There are many companies that are worse than Creative Labs when it comes to product and driver support.

I actually had to 'hack my own' WinXP x64 drivers for my Samsung ML2010. This was AFTER it was released. Luckily there were drivers for teh ML 1740 and I was able to just 'rename' them to make them work. I believe they are on windowsupdate now...

x-fi only doesnt work with x64. x86 works just like XP.

but creative does need to pull thier head out of their asses

Thank YOU SmackDizzle!!!

I do not expect miracles from any manufacturer but to everyone complaining about concerns raised of Creatives lack of ability to keep up with everyone else thay have not released a new driver since July 12!

ZOMG! No new drivers for two months! teh 3m3rg3ncy!

http://us.creative.com/support/down...&driverlang=1033&OS=26&drivertype=0&x=31&y=21

And from this dl link you will see thay are fully aware of the lack of support,

Are you?

why then don't they fix known issues?

(a) they don't give a shit.
(b) they are working on it.
Pick one (or two).

is 2 months not enough time??

Judging by the lack of a new driver, apparently not.

what will happen once Vista is out in full? I can only hope that they have it together by then. But this has not always been the case.

We'll see. When it is released. If there are no mature drivers then, people will be more inclined to care about threads like this. And Creative will (might) too...

If people posting here about sensible concerns regarding lack of support for a given product (Creative) for any OS is a problem for you and you say give Creative more time or that we the consumer don't understand what's involved in development of drivers it's simple business sense, not magic.

Actually, business sense would say that they shouldn't give a crap about your opinion unless you have useful dev information for them. There is no revenue stream contingent on Vista support. The only value that "supporting" (to use the term loosely) these BETA drivers could possibly have is for development/testing purposes. The consumers out for a Vista "test drive" are kind of irrelevant to the process at this point in time unless their feedback helps them learn about how the drivers behave in the wild.

Do you have soem particular bug information to relay to Creative, or do you just want a bigger cupcake?

Creative continues to drag their feet and alot of peole don't appreciate this fact. The members here who claim to have explicit understanding of how HARD it is to get drivers ready and how hardware companies have no responsibilities to anyone until final release of an OS you might be correct(might) OR maybe Creative should look into hiring from ATI and Nvidia development teams! LOL if this doesn' make sense to you the so called experts on how hardware companies run than I am at a loss to explain any further...

Point 1: Creative have no reason not to take advantage of tons of useful data that we the consumers can be providing them before final release of Vista simply by having adequate drivers ready to provide full functionality of the hardware, or at least an attempt at obtaining this objective.

What useful information have you provided to Creative? (Maybe you have, I really don't know.) Do you have any reason to believe that they are ignoring the feedback they are getting other than the fact that they haven't updated their beta download quick enough for you?

Point 2: It is not wrong to ask questions like why are video card manufacturers able to support their hardware EVERY step of the way during OS development but not the sound card manufacturers (Creative).

So yo're saying that video card manufacturers have always done this for every OS release? Your sky is a nice shade of orange.

And it is certainly not a false expectation of me or many of the members here who you the Creative defenders have such contempt for to expect better software from Creative.

Well, considering how hard most of Creative's software blows... :p

Point 3: LAST ONE (I know Phew! :D) If you feel that raising these concerns is wrong why join a forum????

Not wrong, just stupid.

Someone new to computer assembly, operation reading about disappointments toward a certain manufacturer that time and time again are so slow with updated drivers may appreciate being able to make a more informed decision as to what to expect from said manufacturer before shelling out hundreds of dollars, this can not be a waste of time!

your x-fi card will not work with Vista x64 (due to driver signing), but will work in Vista x86 just as well as XP x86.
;)

Some poeple have made it work by turning the driver signing off. Or at least that is what I have read in several forum posts. But I haven't had any success with it myself.

Yeah, but they don't have a front end that works with onboard soundblaster live for XP x64, on either my 975 board or my nForce4 board with onboard SB. If I like just using right and left speakers, yeah it works, but no 5.1 for me.

This is why it concerns me that creative is dragging their feet with Vista support, because we still don't have functionality in XP x64. Creative's track record has been if it kinda works upon it's release, good enough, forget support in the future. We'll just release a new product that works with the new stuff and people will buy it because we don't have any competition. Why do you think creative's mobile audio/video support has been so good, because apple is forcing them to have a product that works and soon microsoft will be as well. Maybe Auzentech can get enough support to give creative a run for their money.

well iirc Creative didnt have Live! drivers for XP till well after it was out so the there is resion to worry

i would HOPE Creative wouldnt pull a stunt like that again but you never know

there ARE working beta drives that will give you sound but like the NV drives thay dont do much other then just make the hardware work

What drivers would make the Live produce sound under Vista? And at the risk of sounding dumb, what else would you want the drivers to do, other than make teh card produce sound?

Aside from that, it is a beta. There is zero reason to expect drivers for a beta, regardless of the amount of money that your product costs. Given that a sound card is a non-critical peripheral, who cares anyway? After all, you aren't doing production work on a beta OS anyway, are you?

I think there is reason to expect drivers from Creative during beta (and I believe you ro someone else posted a link to beta drivers). If this was early beta, I'd agree with you 100%, but this late in the game, if they didn't have beta drivers out there, that'd be trully bad news for early adopters of Vista next year. Internal betas are fine, but this late in the game, a semi-public beta gives you a diverse set of PCs to test on and in theory should root out bugs that the internal testers may not have seen.

Again, given that Creative does appear to have publicly available beta drivers (at least for newer cards) that's not an issue, but if they weren't out there, I'd be very worried, just like I'd be worried if ATI and Nvidia didn't have any beta drivers for Vista yet.

After rereading the post with links to the drivers, I am a bit surprised that the drivers don't support many of the standard features that SB's have had for years (EAX in particular), but as long as they put them out at least a month or 2 before the beta ends, they'll have enough time to find most remaining bugs and presumably fix them.

Well, as the Motherboard Editor guy pointed out, nobody wants to hear from a "NOOBIE". :D
But I did see one more post that caught my eye. In reference to Lexmark printers, see this really illustrates something I pointed out very early in this thread, I have bought some lexmark printers in my life and I suffered when it came to overall quality and drivers etc.. but this didnt really upset me, I felt that I had bought a very inexpensive (CHEAP) printer and I only held the bar so high where my expectations were concerned. And this is where I hold Creative and companies like them (high end items) to a bit of a different standard. When I pay a premium for something, and I can assure you AMD and ATI to name a couple Love Me Long Time, I expect a different level of support I expect them to go the extra mile. I once bought a brand new car for $4900 several years ago, I didnt complain it had no air conditioning, that the seats were uncomfortable, that the ride was terrible, and there was not even a radio, I understood there was a reason I paid so little, No Frills, No Extras of any sort and this seemed fair enough to me. However when I purchased a $40,000 vehichle some years later, I expected everything to be just right, I also found the dealer to be much more willing to take care of the minor issues that came up, and in fact was given many free services and I was treated wonderfully.
So this was really the gist of my thread, it was only my opinion and I do think that based on the premium that Creative charges for its sound cards, my expectations are reasonable. Not because they promised they would, No legalities, No contractual obligations, just simple business philosophy. Thats it. I wont chime in again until I'm something more than a "NOOBIE" ;) PEACE!

And nobody disagreed that it ought to be that Creative does that. However, most people just complain about a product's lack of features on an internet board instead of changing their consumption habits. If you do not like the way your car (Creative) dealer is treating you, why do you keep going back to the same place?! Oh they have a monopoly? Well, then you will have to either complain to the DOJ (anti-trust suit) or suck it up.

Creative does suck when it comes to drivers. No one denies that. However expecting full support and great drivers for a beta OS is totally unrealistic.

I think I quoted the wrong post, or misread the title next to your name. In any case, the personal insults that have been flung around this thread have no purpose and shouldn't be present or tolerated by anyone.

People shouldn't run off at the mouth or start flaming people on the internet in general. It's amazing how many tough guys there are on the internet in general.

I would disagree with what you are saying about Creative's support of their hardware on Vista. The way I look at it is that Vista is not even an offical release yet, so I don't think that they, or any other, company have an obligation to provide support for their hardware on an unsupported platform at this time.

I have a different view on their issues with current hardware and Windows XP. In that case I do think that they have an obligation to fix any problems that people are reporting in a timley manner.

Good luck with everything!

Yes, but Creative also took months to get XP x64 drivers out, even after release. Pathetic. Even then, the drivers were buggy. Why, you ask? The answer is simple, and clearly Creative has learned nothing: If you release beta drivers for beta OS', people will test them. When the OS goes gold, the drivers should be mature enough to be production-ready. (There's good reason why Nvidia and ATI are releasing beta drivers for Vista...)

Oh wait... that would make sense. Try running the scenario again in bizarro-Creative world.

Not really. If the topic at hand doesn't interest you, (complaining about Creative's lack of support), you don't have to come in here and post.

We have every right to complain.

If you don't use a Creative sound card, you are likely going to suffer performance loss when gaming. By virtue of this, we are all pretty much bound to use Creative cards, and are therefore at the mercy of whatever ridiculous policies they have. Yes, we could use onboard sound, and suffer poorer sound quality and slower framerates. How many people on this board are using Creative cards? 80%?

Once Vista is released, you have absolutely every right to complain, and I sincerely hope people do, if drivers aren't available by then. However, until Vista is a supported OS, there's nothing to complain about. That's the point we were all trying to make. The one doing all the complaining, I'm willing to bet, never bothered giving feedback to Creative.

Look, I see your point, but how can we test and report issues without any beta drivers? Creative could release beta drivers and clearly mark them as unsupported and as a test release only. Many companies do this already. (See above RE: Nvidia, ATI.)

Besides, if I don't complain about something, I'd have nothing to say. :D

No, I agree....these companies *should* be releasing something for people to try out. I have a problem with people complaining on an internet forum that something doesn't work, and they spent $$$ blah blah blah on the product, and dammit where are my drivers, etc. That's the part myself and others took issue with. I have absolutely no problem with someone downloading Vista drivers, trying them out, and reporting any issues to the company. That's an invaluable tool for the hardware makers, and is what makes this whole beta process go. The problem was that ClutchS felt like Creative owed him something for Vista, and that's just not the case. Whether Creative releases beta drivers is up to them. If they feel they are doing enough testing in-house, so be it....that's their decision. They just don't owe anything to anyone until Vista is released. Then all the arguments about spending the money for their cards and expecting support are 100% valid. If ClutchS was bitching about his X-Fi for XP64, he'd have a valid complaint, and my only comments to him would have been to make sure he's providing feedback to Creative....then the onus is on them to rectify the situation.

Hmmm... I don't know... I think this is a tough one. On one hand, taking Creative's record into account, I can see why the OP is frustrated.

I sincerely hope Creative does release drivers once the OS goes gold... Let's not forget that pretty much all new PCs will be preloaded with Vista once it is released. If Creative is under the impression that ordinary users will continue to buy their cards (often upon people like us' recommendation) when they're not supported on their new PC, then they're mistaken.

I bet the *T-shirt* is really nice. JUST KIDDING!!! (Please don't hurt me - I'm delicate!)

Install Vista RC1. Install Vista X-Fi drivers. Sound works on my system.

So what's the issue again?

well, I had alot of trouble getting x-fi to work in vista x64 rc1. I did get basic sound functionality with no control panel. I extracted the vista b2 driver using winrar. Then I browsed thru and went to the driver folder. I used the setup in there and the creative driver istallation tool. That's the only thing that worked for me. I tried normal installation and manually installing the drivers thru device manager, both didn't work. Hope this helps!

Nothing I say is MS gospel, nor do I speak for them. However, I've got a pretty major inside connection, and from what I've heard, there is churn with the audio support in Vista, and MS & Creative (as well as Creative's competitors) have been working together to try to get some really whiz-bang stuff working happily.

Run the beta for now, realize that Vista RC1 is just an RC, and that Creative's drivers are just beta drivers. If you get crash dumps, submit them as bugs fercripes-sakes. It doesn't just fall into a blackhole.

Know that this is not the product that MS or Creative will ship, but what they have as a snapshot from where they were a few weeks ago.
