Yet they give Space Marine 2 a 60...

WTF PC Gamer, you used to be respected.
Easily explained without suspicion of payola.

One game has a female protagonist and one game does not.

One other explanation could be, this is 3 different reviewer does their scoring scale the same to start with (someone 3/5 is someone else 4/5.... many reviewer does not use the full scale and never rate anything 0 or 1/10, while some have more granularity)

Different taste, if you read the review, all sound perfectly reasonable.

"What have I become...."

Mainstream outlet's game reviews were a laughing stock even before they adopted political agendas. It was literally a running joke that their scale only goes from 6-10, because they don't want to burn their inside access.

And back in the magazine days, some of the biggest ads buyers were people selling games, the contrast versus the movie reviewing industry with editors making sure the newspapers always paid for a regular movie ticket and for festival paid for the plane-hostel was really big back then.

For a very long time, a giant AAA game getting a 3/10 type of score like tentpoles movies (transformer, Pearl Harbor and what not) were frequently getting was unheard off.

They were giving points for looking good and having sounds back in the days, which make sure big budget always had an high floor.

That was a very long time ago, back when they used to ship CDs with their magazine issues that included game demos and whatnot.

I had a stack of those sitting in my room at my parents house until about 2 years ago. It was like 1995 to 2000 something worth of them...and the magazines.

They can be fun to look back at them, I remember finding old one 1992-1994 type of era, and there was an article on the Black&White game, it was a dos game that looked quite different than the 2001 version we got but looked quite ahead of its time, probably too much and thus the giant development hell.

There was an article talking about the new upcoming DX and a journalist when explain what it was, pointing out to the microsoft spokeperson some form of: "wait.... does it not sound that one day I will need to install Windows to play a video game ?", for microsoft to reassure that no..no it will not have some lock-in property to it, port to amiga, mac and other would continue to be the norm.

Ranking Space Marine 2 below Gollum is actually putrid, like "not only is your opinion useless as a purchasing guide to our industry, but it is actively harmful to it"

I'm not a fan of 40K and even I want to play this game because of how much fun everyone around me is having with it.

I'm no super fan of Warhammer 40K, but I recall the first game being a fun time. I'm thinking it might be a good purchase given how the normies love it and the access media hates it. Sounds like someone gave the fans what they wanted... Unlike what they tried to do on the show that Henry Cavil ended up walking away from because they tried to make it a girl boss show.... You would think they would have learned after the Witcher...

Lot of people loved Transformer 2, theater were full of them, all transformers got good cinemascore, what does it mean for movie critics and movie reviewers that did not like it ?

Is publication that did not rate the beloved with people having giant fun in theaters Twilight movies harmful to the industry.

If people want to know opinion of gamers, a quick glance at steam tell it right away, but specially when an IP is involved, fanbase can be quite biased and pre-sold

I mean, I saw Transformers 2 in theatres and it was actual garbage. The first one was way better, none of them are examples of great, thought-provoking writing, but 2 was legitimately a terribly written sequel and the worst one in the series.

I guess the idea is take a normal, vanilla, average person with no connection or nostalgia to a franchise and the critic is supposed to tell that normie if the cost to experience the movie/game/book is money well spent.

Maybe a reviewer (even then word of mouth is free and ease of access to it nowaday as well), but that really not the role of a critic

I think you're right. But then, a Critique and a Review should not be the same thing.

Yes (and i am not sure they can "sell it" to the boss) but not having a score for example if you want to do critics..... here you read the actual written review of Warhammer, graphic are great, game play, engine, everything is fine, reviewer had a blast for 8 hours, the way the lore was ported into a video game one of the best, but find it repetitive fast and lacking after that quick rush, which would be ok for a small low priced game, but do not pass for an fully priced AAA.

A fan of the ip read that or do not mind doing that nice blast things over and over, still buy it... just look at the score maybe not (6/10 is still good, if you ever use the 0-1-2 for bad games, 5 for an average one and so on)

More that they gave LOTR Gollum a higher score. if a website has a consistent review scale that establishes a high bar for excellence, a 6/10 is above average!

if a website rates LOTR Gollum at 6/10, that tells me a 60% is a terrible, shitty score.

Right like they are actually only using a 5 point scale and 6/10 = 1/5.

I mean Gollum was so bad the game was shut down, refunds were offered, and the studio was shuttered.

I think that's why reviewers who don't actually give a number, just say the pros and cons and their recommendation, are much more popular nowadays.

PC Gamer 's website ads are awful so I avoid it. I do give them historic respect for awarding ALIEN: Isolation GOTY back in 2014 tho.

From NYT, to Fox News, to PC Gamer, to Bee Keeper Monthly, reminder to always bully journalists.
Probably not the same kind of journalism, News vs Game Reviews... News shouldn't be steeped in opinion, Game Reviews are at least partially going to be subjective and consist of opinion once you get past things like graphical quality and performance, and maybe hud interface design/usability. Gameplay, soundtrack, strorytelling, subject matter, these parts of a review will be subjective opinions.

But, has to be some woke conspiracy...

If the female protagonist doesn't have Tomb Raider Boobs (big) , or if the player character in SpaceMarine2 doesn't look like he is packing (hung), some people going to give it a dock to what review score they personally think the game should get... or maybe the spacemarine is hung so 'why only a 60% score' as a source of disagreement with the review score???
loolololol!!
It's a woke conspiracy!

All it boils down to is that
Opinions are like assholes... everybody has one.

I played my first RPG (Final Fantasy 7) back in 1997 because I saw its demo that came in a CD with a magazine and liked it. Nostalgia!

graphical quality
Which is more and more subjective, we far from the raw polycount and lighting tech of the 90s, some ultra limited Zelda game on nintendo have great graphic to some, while ultra impressive tech like Hellblade 2 have bland and empty world, with limited range, it will all be non-only subjective, but the point of it should be to have a particular person point of views, with people following reviewer for who they find their point of view interesting.

People now can see what the game graphic in a quick gameplay video look like, for the objective part there is not that much a critic could add to that, for the part they can, how well the photography, diverse are the world, how well the story is told by the color palette and so on choice, that will be highly subjective.

But, has to be some woke conspiracy...
In this case, some of the reviewers above were involved in online culture war and would not involve any conspiracy, the reviewer would have come with it on their own, without coordinating with anyone else about it.

It's not a "woke conspiracy", its just the downstream effects of baby boomer professors using universities to brainwash a generation of student loan debt slaves. Most corporations are ruined by the same mind virus through HR departments as well. Reminder to bully all HR employees.

Now if this was a Space King game rather than Warhammer it might have been reviewed better.

6/10=.6
1/5=.2
3/5=.6

A 6 on a 10 point scale is a 3 on a 5 point scale.

His point was that they don't score lower than 6,so it's effectively a "1" as they don't ever use the rest. It wasn't a math statement ;).
Or in other words, he's saying if they ever did rate a game 1/10, that's more like -4/5, because they never rate games that low.

WTF PC Gamer, you used to be respected.

I dunno, these numbers aren’t that far off base, it’s just the Space Marine 2 review that seems divorced from reality. The comments on that review only blew up because it’s an unpopular take and people feel the need to be outraged by everything anymore.

Gollum is a solid D or F title - it’s garbage but 64 fits, Outlaws is a solid C (like every other bland-fest Ubisoft title) - playable, but lazy and dull waste of IP, low 70s seems fair. The problem here is the reviewer for Space Marine 2 (apparently) doesn’t like 40k and gave a questionable opinion.

Point is, don’t let one bad review by some doofus color your opinion in it’s entirety. PCG is one of the last standing who still offer PC content in print. So long as they keep printing a magazine that holds my attention, I will overlook a lot of dumb shit like this partucular review.

Game of the Year was Baldur's Gate 3 even though it came out last year #2 was Disco Elysium for the 3rd time.

Mainstream outlet's game reviews were a laughing stock even before they adopted political agendas. It was literally a running joke that their scale only goes from 6-10, because they don't want to burn their inside access.

Same thing on Wall Street, where analysts are very reluctant to declare anything a "sell" because they'll lose inside access to the company's board of directors. Ever wonder why there are so many "hold" ratings on companies that seem to be perpetually screwing up? Now you know.

In any case, games "journalism" has been worthless for years now. There is an unbelievable amount of "elite capture" in academia that has trickled down to these companies, and most reviewers don't understand their audience and what they're looking for in the games they play. My two favourite examples were the girl who complained she had to hunt monsters in "Monster Hunter", and the guy who reviewed a PS5 and said he liked it, but then had to remind everyone, in his review, that it was hard to have fun and talk about a new console when Donald Trump is President, which was certainly helpful to me, as a Canadian, because I never purchase anything that may provide me enjoyment without consider who the President of the United States happens to be at the time.

The professionally offended recently discovered a quote from Matthew Karch stating he's tired of games that push politics and morality and just wants to make games that are just plain fun again, so now you're not allowed to like Space Marine 2 because it's "problematic" or something, and if you like it that means you're a something-ist or guilty of a something-ism. The professionally offended also control the editorial boards of games "journalism" publications, so I don't anticipate many favourable reviews, because giving one now means you're out of the cool kids club and the cancel culture mob will be on it's way.

I dunno, seems like it has generally really good reviews?
