If you are looking to Windows 8 as an excuse to upgrade your present rig, forget it. Microsoft is assuring us all that if it runs Vista or Windows 7, it will run Windows 8 just fine, thank you. So whatever you told yourself, your wife/husband or girl/boyfriend to pave the way for a new set of components, you had better come up with a better excuse. :D

"Windows 8 will be able to run on a wide range of machines because it will have the same requirements or lower."

What about the excuse it wont play Crysis?

This is untrue, you must upgrade to use it. I'm hearing the minimum screen configuration is three 30" LCD's.

That's cool, I'll bite!!!

Hopefully this is because how closely it is based on Windows 7. I'm looking for a painless transition on to Widnows 8 on all my Vista/7 capable machines.

That cements my belief that there is absolutely no reason to buy it.

Well I should hope my i7 950 and two 470's would be enough to run it.

I would be extremely worried if it wasn't.

At this point, I will be very, very surprised if a new OS needs anything beyond what a $500 budget build can provide... Because that already entails 8GB Ram, Quadcore CPU and a pretty decent GPU. (HD 4670 at the least) If an OS needs more than this, uhm... well, uh... Well. They'd be doing it wrong.

Some people don't need an excuse to blow money on crap.

Then again, I have no doubt W8 will be the greatest OS ever of all time ever and those of use who don't use it are dopes and blah blah blah...

operating systems...

Don't see what the big deal is. In my experience, just about every machine that came with vista took the upgrade to 7 well, maybe needing a bump from 1gb of ram to 2gb of ram at most. I would be surprised if any machine that came with 7 couldn't handle 8 pretty easily, and I would also expect that any c2q/nehalem machine that came with vista would take to 8 fine.

I can see it now.

"Windows 8, does the same shit as Windows 7/Vista, but now has DirectX 12"

All that for $100 - $200, and comes in 5 unnecessary and confusing flavors? Microsoft might as well take the money straight from my bank account.

That's because it IS Windows 7. With yet another new user interface.

MS have not had a "new" OS out since Vista, and even thats half based on Win XP.

Yep, at least not until I need another license for a new build. Provided I don't already have a spare Vista/7 license of course.

I got my windows 7 professional for $30 along with a great many people on this site. I don't really expect to pay much more than that for 8. $30 is not even the cost of a Day 1 video game.

I'm concerned about the upgrade path options and cost.

Will MS make this a pain?

THis might be the first time I don't upgrade to the new OS ASAP. WHile I had few issues with my Vista machines, once upgraded to 8, the few issues went away and they are now (knock on wood) flawless.

Considering Windows 7 runs like a champ on my Dell Mini 9, a computer with the horsepower of a horsefly, I am not concerned.

Modern tablets, netbooks, and nettops will represent the bottom of the barrel hardware for most, and they are already much faster than the old N270 Atom processor in my Mini.

And let us not pretend that the upgrade from Vista to W7 was less than the sorry excuse of a paid service pack that OSX saw, which omitted even the most basic updates like SSD trim support and added no home theater or touchscreen or other updates to keep with the times. Vista user's legitimate complaints were that many things simply did NOT work. They didn't have printer drivers and the like because third party vendors were not updating their older software and hardware for the new OS. By the time of W7's release, this had all been worked out, and the improvements to the UI were very nice.

So likewise this can't help to be a success as it has the strong W7 performance and stability foundation, while promising a more touch friendly and further refined UI with I'm sure other layered updates.

Soooo, the point of getting Win8 is beside being on new PC builds and new PCs are?

If even half of the rumors of the included features in Windows 8 are true, I'll personally pre-order the fucking disc.

I am quite excited from everything I've read about it.

I paid $30 each for 3x copies of Win7 Home Premium, not sure where you're shopping. I also bought one copy around launch for $80, on a non-hot deal. What's confusing about the flavors exactly, they're very simple differences that are clearly laid-out on a pretty table graph for those who don't wish to read the feature list. I found WinXP to WinVista to be huge, and WinVista to Win7 to be huge in improvements (especially WinVista MC to Win7 MC). If you don't want the new OS don't buy it, but at the same time don't try to claim it doesn't do anything more nicely ;).

I thought it was too early for the lemmings to begin their march...perhaps not:

Are people here actually complaining about an OS upgrade that doesn't require newer hardware than the previous version(s)? More features, same (or lower) requirements, sounds like efficient programming to me.

Windows 7 has the same (if not lower) system requirements as Windows Vista, I didn't see anyone complaining about THAT.

I'm complaining because it's the same old OS with yet another lick of paint (Win7 service pack 3, with the updated graphics included, SP2 will be without the graphics pack, and shipped next year to Win7 users), and a touch interface, useless on 99% of PC hardware.

I'd be amazed if they put the specs up, its fat and bloated as it is, they cant get away with making it worse if they insist on making it work on a netbook or tablet.

I'll have to take W8 for a test run before I can pass any judgment. That being said, I'm in no rush to switch OS's as well.

Such as?

Microsoft haven't been exactly forthcoming with much other than "touch" and "metro" stuff. I wished theyd put something more about the underlying workings or features that 99% of people will use.

It's like you already know what Windows 8 is going to be.

Who cares, I like new OS. They always spice things up. Windows Vista was awesome compared to XP(visually and some other stuff). Windows 7 is even better. I find it much easier to use.(Finding the downloads folder is way easier, just one example)

I will easily run a donated copy of Windows 8....no problem!

MS changes a lot: blah blah blah all my programs are incompatible, lemmings will upgrade I won't!
MS changes little: blah blah blah no difference, lemmings will upgrade I won't!

Fact is, MS hasn't even begun talking about Windows 8 except to show the tablet UI, so there'a not even much to ague about. Whatever it eventually becomes, I'm sure there will be much insulting of the 'lemmings' who upgrade, however. I like what I hear from the ars technica article posted above, but that's not official so who knows, I'll reserve judgement until more is known as should others.

shhh don't feed the troll! You'll regret it!

I wonder how fast it will take for someone to rip windows 8 gui and release a "theme pack" that will get windows 7 to look like it? ;)

There already is, it's called like Omimo or something like that. Just google "Windows 8 DeviantArt theme."

I just re-installted 7, so i'm hoping 8 doesn't come out anytime soon to be honest. Also the fact that it can be a pain in the ass to find for a decent price, especially with most people on this website needing 64-bit too.

However if the only real update is that it can use Direct-X12, with a bit of a changed interface, I may wait a while until I get it..
