Windows 7 or 8

If he's too busy remembering to breathe, then no. Otherwise, I don't see that as too much to ask for. It's not like the new interface requires him to blink the UTF-8 binary encoding of the characters he wishes to type, or position the mouse by using a cantilevered control attached to his chin. He has to go from opening the start menu and navigating through a tree organized by file path to opening a page with his applications on them. A significant question, though, is why would Tom Smith install Visual Studio, or why doesn't Tom Smith ever use his keyboard? Certainly you can make anything problematic if you impose enough restrictions.

The Visual Studio was suggested as it adds a lot of new tiles. It could be several other programs. Just an example.

I work with a lot of the Tom Smith types. They use their PC to get work done. Most of them even have the default icons on their desktop and never use them. When I did PC repair work, I'd find a lot of OEM icons on the desktop from people that didn't care to drag and drop them in the recycle bin. Never used... There are a lot more of those type than you think.

I know arguing with you is pointless, though. If users don't use Windows 8, they're dumb and can't figure it out....

I gave Windows 8.1 a shot for a month. I tried to like Metro, but it's just horrible. I figured it out, but hated it anyway. I installed Classic Shell and got rid of any instance of the horrible Metro. Overall it wasn't bad. But lately I've been having weird little quirks with my network and certain programs that ended up forcing me to go back to Windows 7 Ultimate. It also really bugged me that I had to use a 3rd party program to make Windows 8 even remotely usable.

It "felt" a little snappier, but now that I'm running a fresh version of Windows 7, I can't tell a difference. My last W7 install was over 2 years old. I really don't see any reason at all to install and use Windows 8. If you're like me, you'll find yourself doing everything you can to get it to look and feel like Windows 7. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" really applies in this case. Windows 7 is fast, stable, and very user friendly. I do like seeing breakthroughs and new features in each version of Windows, but I don't want a new UI forced down my throat. And that's why Windows 8 is the new Vista.

Here's hoping Windows 9 get's rid of Metro, or at least gives you the option to completely disable it altogether.

I doubt this will happen. I do see Metro getting some treatment to make it easier to use, though.

Could you point out a specific example of something that works well for you in 7 but not 8.1?

I may give it a go again when 8.1 is released. I have to do SOMETHING with my academic software key! :D

Server permissions were a big problem for me in 8.1. Constantly losing permissions which made my server folders inaccessible on Windows 8.1. Major issue. Works perfect on Windows 7. 2+ years without a single server issue until I installed Windows 8.

Dota 2 crashing. Never had a single crash on 7, multiple crashes on 8.1. Had a few other random crashes. 2+ years on Windows 7 without a single crash.

Chrome unable to properly use Java properly with 8.1. Certain websites, like my bank's and credit union's, were unusable because of a bug that causes Chrome not to be able to use Java, even though it's installed and enabled. Works perfectly on Windows 7.

All I can think of now, but major issues for me. I use server folders constantly, play Dota 2 all the time, and use my bank and credit union websites daily. These issues, paired with how horrible Metro is and the need for a 3rd party program to get rid of it, was the end of Windows 8 for me.

But, to each his own. You'll always have people who will love/hate something for different reasons. I gave it a shot at least.

Thanks for the reply with very specific info, that's refreshing around here. I've not had issues to this degree with 8.1 but I've had my share, there were definitely plenty of bugs in the preview that I've experienced but I would imagine that the RTM will be more stable. Shouldn't be long for it. The RTM should be available pretty soon, possibly as early as next week on MSDN according to Ed Bott.
